How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

Before we dive into the details, let’s start with the golden rule for choosing how much RAM you need for your Minecraft server.

You don’t need how much RAM someone tells you you need. You need how much RAM is required for a smooth gaming experience.

For most gamers fooling around with a bunch of friends, 1GB of RAM is more than enough for their Minecraft server – especially when optimizing their server experience.

But if you’re looking for information on how much RAM a Minecraft server needs, the answers you get can feel a little all over the map. Many of the results you find are recommendations from Minecraft server host providers. Hosting plans scale costs based on factors like RAM, processing power, and storage space that the plan offers.

So there is some bias in recommending buying a larger hosting package. Not only does the provider make a little more money, but there’s a good chance you won’t file support tickets or need additional help if the server is oversized for your needs.

“How much RAM do I need for my Minecraft server?” is a question like “How big is my vehicle?” in that you can’t answer the question effectively without considering how the server (or vehicle) will be used . So a blanket statement “Everyone should have 4GB of RAM for their Minecraft server” is about as useful as “Everyone needs a transporter”.

Redstone, entities and chunk loading

In addition to simply rendering what the player sees in-game, the server must constantly calculate and recalculate everything in-game. Sheep roaming around, villagers going through their little NPC routines, generating mobs, and so on.

Even things like crop growth cycles and the effect of redstone circuits and in-game creations play into the load on the server.

If you and your friends want to build massive redstone creations like iron golem farms, gold farms or other resource-intensive projects, you may need more RAM.

game mods

Minecraft modding is a big part of the Minecraft experience for many players, and mods can place significant demands on the server.

While small mods that just change things like what the villagers sell or the behavior of the itinerant merchant aren’t very demanding, mods that change gameplay mechanics, add extra dimensions, and otherwise make major changes or additions to the game increase the amount of RAM you need.

Of course, popular mega mod packs like Better Minecraft, which routinely include over 150 game-enhancing and modifying mods, require more RAM than a simple server.

Consider upgrading your server software, not your hardware

Your conclusion after reading the previous paragraphs might be, “OK, so I need more RAM!” But before you pay your Minecraft host for the next level or upgrade your hardware, there’s a really easy and free way to boost performance of the Minecraft server.

For years, Mojang has offered free access to the Minecraft server platform. You pay for the game, but the server needed to host the game is free. Each new public release has an updated server.jar file, which you can find on the official website.

While that’s generous, the official server is poorly optimized. So poorly optimized, in fact, that throwing more and more RAM at the problem usually doesn’t improve performance. At least not in a cheap and sensible way.

Instead of paying more for a beefier hosting package or upgrading your home hardware to increase performance with the vanilla server, we recommend using a heavily optimized fork of the Minecraft server like PaperMC.

Not only is PaperMC so well optimized that it will blow your mind, but the optimizations translate directly to reduced RAM requirements. (And since PaperMC is a fork of the Spigot project, you can easily use the plethora of Spigot-compatible Bukkit plugins.)

For example, I recently kicked up a server to play with a handful of friends and family around the world. I chose to run the plain vanilla server straight from Mojang, knowing the performance issues, just to test it and confirm things hadn’t changed. Even with only 3-4 players, the performance was abysmal. Gradually increasing my RAM allocation from 1GB upwards to higher and higher numbers had minimal impact on performance.

There were delays no matter what we did. Blocks were often not broken (or placed correctly) and my friends often got stuck behind “invisible” blocks that had been visually removed by their client but remained as a physical barrier on the server side. Suffice to say it wasn’t a very fun experience.

However, when I replaced the vanilla server with the highly optimized PaperMC server, I was able to reduce my RAM allocation back down to 1GB while adding a few dozen mods and plugins, all with perfectly smooth performance. Setup is as straightforward and easy as the regular Minecraft server.

Whether you’re paying for a host or hosting yourself at home, we really can’t stress what an upgrade from the vanilla server software to PaperMC is.

Don’t allocate too much RAM to your Minecraft server

Finally, a little word of warning about not allocating too much RAM to your Minecraft server. While increasing RAM is required as you add many players and increasingly complex mods, there comes a point where ROI diminishes.

Keeping the RAM allocation for your server close to what your players and mods/plugins require will actually help your server run better. Allocating 16GB of RAM to a server that doesn’t really need it will just run the Java that powers the server more inefficiently.

We don’t need to delve into a discourse on Java, but the key detail here is a concept called “garbage collection,” the process by which Java programs automatically manage their memory usage.

If you have under-allocated RAM to your Minecraft server, the garbage collection process will often run to keep RAM available for use. This will affect performance and your server will not run smoothly. On the other hand, allocating too much RAM can cause the garbage collector to run less often, but when it does, the load on the server will be heavier.

In short, let the actual gaming experience guide your customizations. Start with 1GB and play. Is everything running smoothly and is it fun to play? Great, keep it at 1GB. Add some mods, some more friends or both and the server starts to lag? Allocate more RAM (or buy a larger hosting plan) to accommodate the new demand on the server.
