What is the foam that barbers use?
Red Alert Retention foam for barbers by barbers is a super versatile leave in conditioning formula with foaming action. It’s a wave pattern definer, helps with blending and sculpt Afros. Even after shampoo, it snaps the waves back to natural form.
Is foam good for wavy hair?
Hair mousse is a hair styling foam with a light, airy texture that enhances your natural wave pattern for a bit of volume throughout your hair. Many people with wavy or fine hair prefer a lighter hair mousse or foam to a heavier hair gel or cream that could weigh down strands and cause the scalp to look greasy faster.
What mousse is good for waves?
Moroccanoil’s beach wave mousse gives you long lasting beach texture in a bottle. It also creates waves with an effortlessly windswept look with flexible hold, while UV absorbers protect hair from sun damage and maintain color vibrancy.

Is foam and mousse the same?
As for the difference between foams and mousses? It all comes down to consistency. Both types of products are similar, except foams are usually more lightweight than mousses which tend to have a texture closer to whipped cream.

If you have curly hair, you know that mousses and mousses can either give you the best hair day of your life or the worst. The key? Find the right formula that works for your specific hair type.
Modern versions are here to debunk the mindset that mousses should be a thing of the past. Many formulas are now made with moisturizing ingredients like sunflower oil and wheat protein, which are a vast improvement over the originals.
What is the difference between foams and mousses? Consistency matters. Both types of products are similar, except that mousses are usually lighter than mousses, which tend to have a texture more akin to whipped cream.
“It’s important to first identify your curl type and then figure out which products are for you,” says hairstylist Irinel de León. “This is so important because you may be using a product that’s either too light or too heavy for your curls, which could either cause frizz, leave buildup, or make your strands limp.”
To smooth and define curls with a mousse, start by rubbing the mousse into towel-dried hair from root to tip. Comb through to remove any tangles, tilt your head upside down and scrunch in the product with your fingers. Then flip your head and either use a diffuser to blow dry your hair or let it air dry and go.
In addition to your curl type and hair texture, your environment can help determine the best product for you. “The climate you live in directly affects your hair,” adds de León. “Moisture, for example, is moisture in the air, so your strands absorb that moisture and expand in width, leading to frizz.”
Mousses and mousses can help by adding moisture and hold to your hair while leaving it soft to the touch. Check out the best formulas for each type of curls, according to hair stylists, ahead of time.
Is there a product to make straight hair wavy?
Bumble and bumble Surf Spray
There’s a reason this classic formula is still popular years later: it actually works. It’s gritty texture lends waves and movement even on limp strands.

01 of 05 Bumble and bumble Surf Spray Courtesy Buy Now Before Bumble and bumble bottled this spray, beach waves were only possible with a sandy side. There’s a reason this classic formula is still popular years later: it actually works. Its grainy texture adds wave and movement to even limp strands. Enriched with moisturizing Kelp Extract and Seaweed, spritzing on Surf Spray never leaves hair dry and brittle. In other words, life is always a beach.
02 of 05 Ouai Wave Spray Courtesy Buy Now This spray makes hair look and smell better than on the beach. Its rice protein-enriched formula really did an ouai (pun intended) by activating those natural waves you didn’t know you had and enhancing texture that’s long-lasting and doesn’t weigh hair down. Bonus points for the brand’s addictive signature scent with notes of Italian lemon, amber and musk – we really can’t get enough.
03 of 05 Verb Sea Spray Courtesy Buy Now Verb’s turquoise spray may look like it’s literally bottled seawater, but we doubt the actual product would have the same effect on our hair. Spritz this natural sea salt-infused spray onto damp, towel-dried hair and set in a few sectioned buns until air-dried to slightly enhance texture on flat strands. Even better, if you’re planning on actually hitting the nearest beach, it contains sunflower seed extract, which protects hair from UV rays.
04 of 05 Hairstory Undressed Courtesy Buy Now If your hair’s natural texture always looks like you’ve just had a straight blowout, you know that it takes a little more than a few spritzes of wave spray to get any kind of movement in your strands reach. Stubbornly straight hair should try spraying on Hairstory’s Undressed, which can be applied in layers without leaving hair feeling heavy or product residue. What sets this spray apart from the rest is that with just a few sprays and scrunch, a wavy texture forms instantly. While Undressed may sound magical, Hairstory is actually Bumble and Bumble founder Michael Gordon’s new hair project, so we really shouldn’t have expected less from the creator of the original surf spray.
How do you define 2a waves?
Type 2a hair is in the wavy hair spectrum falling between curly and straight strands. This hair type is overall the most manageable and low maintenance, but is the thinnest in body. However, you want to ensure that you do not weigh it down with heavy hair products.
8 Best Wave Foams For Natural Waves at All Price Points
Hair type 2 is classified as a wavy texture that falls between the spectrum of curly and straight hair. Type 2 can range from looser loops to coarser and thicker S waves that are slightly tighter in wave structure and curls. Type 2 hair tends to get more wavy the further down it goes from the roots. Type 2 hair is divided into three separate categories: 2a, 2c and 2b. To break it down simply, type 2a has light waves, 2b has soft waves, and 2c has defined waves.
Knowing where your hair fits into this spectrum of categories is important because you will be able to choose the right products and conditioners that work for you. Curly and wavy hair can be tricky as it makes it harder to define what type of wave or curl you have.
What is type 2a hair?
Hair type 2a has the loosest S-shape of the three types of wavy styles. Type 2a hair is on the wavy hair spectrum, which falls between curly and straight strands. This hair type is the most manageable and easy to maintain overall, but has the thinnest body. However, you want to make sure you don’t weigh it down with heavy hair products.
You definitely want to avoid the fluffy and limp style and texture that 2a hair can be inherently prone to. Type 2a hair works best slightly shorter to add volume and extra texture to your natural waves. A shorter hairstyle also creates the illusion of a fuller, thicker set of curls.
So what should I use on these wild waves?
I know firsthand what bedhead waves can look like, and they’re not exactly “effortless”. The easiest way to accentuate your natural waves while keeping the natural vibe is to use the right styling tools. A simple heat protectant spray followed by a flick of a magic wand can add that missing touch to your locks. A 1.5 inch curling iron is the perfect tool when you want to add even more curl to your waves. The messier the curl, the more your natural wave will show through. Styling tools are a great addition to 2a hair because of the uneven bends and curls overall.
The biggest mistake you can make with Type 2a hair is weighing it down with products to drain your natural wave structure and body. Finding the right products for your hair to enhance its natural volume is crucial. The most important products to keep in your shower are clean shampoo and conditioner with frizz-free volume quality. A light definition gel can also be a great addition to your hair regimen to tame frizz and prevent extra weight.
Of all hair types, one thing is certain, curly or wavy hair can be unpredictable, so it’s important to know your type and the products that work best for your hair.

Learn about the basic steps to achieve a luscious head of curls and what to avoid to ensure your curls are activated.
How to enable curls: a summary
Many people have a natural curl pattern and don’t even know it! When curls are activated, they are vibrant, bouncy and full of life. A head full of curls is within everyone’s reach if they just follow a few key steps:
Wash hair with a sulfate-free shampoo. Use a conditioner that defines curls. Apply a leave-in conditioner. Comb the hair with your fingers. Allow hair to air dry Use a diffuser Don’t touch!
Hair is very individual and each routine should optimize your curls based on your preferences and needs. Between shampoo products and drying techniques, there are several options to choose from.
How to activate curls 8 easy ways
Whether you choose to wash together or shampoo, mist or air dry, there is one step you can take to promote maximum curl and fullness. Some steps come in handy when you are in a hurry to get out the door.
Other steps are more helpful for those with wavy hair where flatness is a risk. These steps activate and bring to life wavy bohemian curls, curly lively curls and every curl pattern in between.
1. Wash hair with a sulfate-free shampoo
Your hair should be clean to start the curl activation process. Dry locks aren’t bouncy or full of life, so those with curly hair should avoid sulfate in shampoo. Other ingredients to watch out for are alcohol and silicones.
Alcohol is a drying ingredient; use it sparingly. Silicone causes a film layer to form on the hair, resulting in dull hair with build-up. Wash your hair with sulfate-free shampoo, paying special attention to the scalp and hair roots.
Some people with curly hair swear by shampoo. Instead, these people use conditioner to wash their hair—this is called co-washing.
You can even buy co-wash conditioners that have the purpose of washing and conditioning the hair at the same time. Because curly hair is conditioned multiple times to maintain moisture levels, much more buildup occurs.
Whether you use conventional shampooing or co-washing, you should rinse your hair of the buildup that builds up over time. After scrubbing your scalp with a co-wash or shampoo, you can move on to the next step.
2. Use Curl Defining Conditioner
Conditioner is the most important step of the curl activation routine as conditioner adds moisture to the hair. The liveliest curls are those with moisture and moisture. Since your hair is freshly clean, it can absorb the moisturizing properties of your conditioner.
Specially formulated curl conditioners seal cuticles, locking in moisture and preventing unwanted frizz. Leave the conditioner in your hair for a few minutes in the shower while continuing your morning routine.
You can leave the conditioner in your hair overnight and add it to braids for deep conditioning. Rinsing your hair in the morning will add extra moisture to it.
Read on: How to take good care of your hair
3. Apply leave-in conditioner
Apply a light, water-based leave-in conditioner when you get out of the shower. One of the first ingredients on the leave-in conditioner bottle should be water.
Water-based leave-in conditioners can penetrate the hair cuticle more easily than silicone-based leave-in conditioners.
A leave-in conditioner protects your hair from heat and sun damage while ensuring your hair stays moisturized. Leave-in conditioner also gives your hair a “slip” for the detangling process; this prevents breakage and tearing.
When it comes to curly hair, there is no such thing as too much moisture. Leave-in conditioner makes your hair more manageable as you comb through section by section.
4. Comb hair with fingers
For best results, do not use a brush or comb on curly hair. If you must use a wide-toothed comb, do so sparingly, starting at the ends and working your way down to the roots. Finger combing is an important step in the repertoire of every curly-haired girl.
Brushes and combs can disrupt the curl pattern, causing frizz and breakage. Separate your hair into sections and run your fingers through your luscious locks. You can spray your hair with water during the combing process if the hair dries out.
Never detangle curly hair when dry; This is a recipe for hair breakage. It’s important to detangle your hair completely to allow the curl pattern to flourish.
5. Scrunch it up
The scrunch step is especially important for those with wavy and loose curls that are less defined. Flip your finger combed hair and separate the curls. Water weighs down wavy hair and crunching counteracts this smoothing effect.
Separating the curls before air drying allows them to shape and dry in definition rather than in one big clump. Apply a curl-defining lotion or cream while you scrunch your curls.
Curling your hair means grabbing your hair by the ends and forming a claw-like shape with your hands as you grip the curls section by section. Repeat the scrunch process from the ends of your hair to the root. As a bonus, the scrunching prevents the crunchy curl effect from occurring.
6. Allow hair to air dry
Blow drying is another no-no for curly hair; The technique causes frizz and disrupts the curl pattern. Allow hair to air dry for as long as possible. Some curly hair lovers wait until the hair is 80 percent dry before completing the look.
As a rule of thumb, the more time you devote to air drying, the better. Air drying reveals natural curl patterns. Using special methods, you can remove excess moisture from the hair. Terry towels cause friction, and friction causes frizz.
You can pat your hair dry with a microfiber towel. If you don’t have a microfiber cloth, a cotton t-shirt will do. Allow the hair to air dry to allow the natural curl pattern to form.
7. Use a diffuser
Once hair is 90 percent dry, you can use a hair diffuser. A diffuser is an attachment on the hair dryer that disperses and slows down the air coming out of the heater. For best results, you should set your blow dryer on a cool and low setting.
A diffuser is not necessary, but can be helpful for those in a hurry. A diffuser is also a useful tool for those with wavy hair trying to maintain a curl pattern. Use the diffuser at the root of the hair to complete the curly look.
8. Don’t touch!
This step is probably the most difficult of all. It can be tempting to play with your hair, but it’s important to keep your hands off it. Once you’ve detangled your hair and put products in it, keep your hands away. Hands in hair cause friction and frizz.
Unnecessarily touched hair can also displace the oils from the leave-in conditioner and curl cream. Ditto for admirers who inevitably beg to touch your tresses. People enjoying your hair can do it remotely without touching it!
Frequently asked questions about curl activation
People with curly hair know that maintaining curls is a lot of work, but comes with great rewards. There are many things to consider to keep your hair in top condition.
From the first step of moisturizing to the last step of grooming, answers to questions will keep curls looking stylish:
How do you bring out natural curls after the shower?
Be careful how you dry your hair to bring out natural curls after you shower. Air drying is the best way to bring out natural curls and create curl patterns.
If you are in a hurry, choose your hair drying methods wisely, not all hair drying methods are created equal.
Do not rub your hair with a terry towel. Instead, use a microfiber cloth or a cotton t-shirt. Press the towel against the hair follicles and twist to maintain the curls.
How do you keep your curly hair moisturized?
To keep curly hair moisturized, be sure to use a leave-in conditioner. Curly hair lovers swear by the leave-in, oil, cream (LOC) method.
The LOC method refers to the order in which products should be worked into the hair to ensure maximum moisture: leave-in conditioner first, then a light oil, and finally cream.
Clean hair once a week with co-wash or shampoo to remove build-up and residue from leave-in conditioners. Use a leave-in conditioner every morning to give thirsty hair the moisture it needs.
How can you restore the natural curl pattern to heat damaged hair?
If your heat-damaged hair has lost its curl, it’s time to take a break from applying heat to your hair. Heat dries out the hair and causes the hair to lose its curl pattern. Your hair has memory, which means you can train your curls to be bouncy.
Consistently straightening the hair will remove the curl pattern as the hair adjusts to being straight. To restore the natural curl pattern, use protein and deep conditioning treatments. When your hair is rehydrated, restore the curl pattern.
How can you enhance natural curls overnight?
Overnight is a great time to enhance curls. Many people don’t realize that sleeping on the wrong material can cause frizzy hair and disrupt the curl pattern.
Treat yourself to a silk or satin pillowcase if you can afford one, and cover your hair with a protective cap while you sleep. When you toss and turn in your sleep, you create friction between your hair and the bed. this causes frizz!
How should you sleep with curly hair?
Anyone with curly hair knows that if you sleep with a frizzy mess, you wake up with your hair unsecured. Securing hair while you sleep can promote bouncy, moisturized locks the next day.
Experiment with different types of braids; A French braid is a popular bedtime hairstyle that maintains and protects curl patterns. Put your hair in a protective hairstyle and drape a scarf, bonnet, or t-shirt over your hair to prevent frizz.
So how do you activate curls?
The first step in activating curls and maintaining the curly pattern is to moisturize the hair. The next thing to think about is to pay attention to the tools you use with curly hair; say no to blow dryers, terry towels and brushes.
Instead, use hair styling products and methods that encourage curling, like microfiber towels and finger curling.
When you choose methods and products that promote healthy curls, you don’t have to worry about flyaway curls and frizz. A combination of conditioning and moisturizing is key to activating curls.
Does mousse damage your hair?
They can, because of varying amounts of alcohol in the formulas (an integral part of the mousse`s formula that aids quick drying), cause drying of the hair ends. Depending upon how much mousse is used or abused, it can damage fine, colored or permed hair with overuse.

She applies a moisturizer and leaves it on for three minutes. She rinses her hair, adds a protein-enriched finisher and combs through.

Before turning on the blow dryer, she runs a dab of styling gel or a handful of mousse (depending on the look she wants) through her hair. When she’s done, she keeps it all in place with a vegetable protein hairspray.
With the five products she uses on her hair, Stanton estimates that her bi-monthly hair cosmetics bill is $50 or more — and that adds up to $150 or more if she gets her hair colored and cut.

She has what is known in the industry as “expensive hair.”
From time to time it goes uphill. spacecraft. Prices. The skirts. Hair. Especially hair. Defy gravity like one of the Flying Wallendas.
Hair stays up for now, rippled into punk spikes, mini wings, duck tails, rooster combs, lazy bows and flying fluff.
To keep it flying in style, the hair has also taken on a masochistic slant. Whip it, hit it, treat it roughly. But not as rough as the 60’s Tease Torture or the 50’s Lackhelm.
Instead, the hair should look unapproachable but feel silky. Mousse, the hottest product to hit the hair care market since Home Permanent came out, adds body, texture, shine and hold.
Charlene Stanton’s hair is in good shape because her hairstylist took the time to explain every product he sold her. But for the larger segment of mousse users, hair care products are lacking.
Mousse is abused by women who get their hair cut at a salon and then use an over-the-counter product to try to achieve the same effect that the stylist achieved with the professional version.
There is a possibility that the client will use the mousse alone and not in conjunction with moisturizers or conditioners that are designed to replace the moisture in the hair that the alcohol in the mousse removes.

Mousse appeared in the hair care departments of supermarkets and drugstores about a year and a half ago with the Freehold Mousse from L’Oreal.
Joyce Blackburn, product manager at Freehold, says, “It immediately became a $100 million category with about 60 different brands,” in which Freehold owns about 50 percent. (However, the concept of mousse was not new to the company. Professional European stylists used a mousse-like product from L’Oreal 10 years ago.)
It took L’Oreal five years to develop the commercial mousse. Technically, the France-based company “married” two polymer molecules that were once thought to be incompatible. The result is that the mousse holds the hair in place but leaves it soft to the touch.
So the question is, which came first, anti-gravity curls or the mousse and related products like modeling lotions and lighter styling gels?
San Francisco salon owner Diego Demolos says, “The hairstyles had to come first. Once created, they needed something to support them. Products are not what define a hairstyle, rather the need for the product is created by the style. All we had in the beginning was hairspray and heavier gels like Dep, and women didn’t want to wear them because they left such a terrible residue in their hair.”
Briton Oliver Creasey agrees: “The haircuts have always been there. Now the chemicals have caught up. Our business is hair cutting and I think products were put out because we needed them. My father was a barber who used sugar and water to hold hair. The 50s in particular were a killer for hair. We used to have to use almost pure alcohol to remove hairspray.”
advertisement
Foams, gels and the like do not require denatured alcohol to be removed.
They can cause dehydration of the ends of the hair due to different amounts of alcohol in the formulas (an essential part of the mousse formula that helps to dry quickly). Depending on how much mousse is used or abused, excessive use can damage fine, colored or permed hair.
Does mousse curl your hair?
Hair mousse will help keep frizz at bay and give the appearance of more defined curls. Win! A common foe to curls is frizz because of the naturally curved structure of strands. The bend in your hair makes it harder for moisture to travel from root to tip.

What does hair mousse do for curly hair?
curly curls? Hair mousse helps keep frizz at bay and gives the look of more defined curls. Win!
A common enemy of curls is frizz due to the naturally curved strand structure. The bend in your hair makes it harder for moisture to travel from root to tip. And dry curls are like a frizz magnet. While hair mousse can act as a frizz barrier, it’s also a good idea to arm yourself with an intensely moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that’s designed to do so are that they penetrate deep into the hair strands.
Another top tip for curls that are prone to frizz is to work a little curly hair leave-in conditioner into the strands before applying hair mousse.
Once you’ve cleansed and conditioned (we recommend Aussie Calm the Frizz Collection), add mousse to your styling routine for extra frizz protection that lasts into the night. A dual-action hair mousse that conditions and holds, like Aussie Turn Up The Curl Mousse with Australian Wild Cherry Bark Extract, not only holds strands in place for an enviable style that lasts into the night, but leaves strands free and free of crunches -fluent.

How to make waves with styling gel and mousse
People who hang out on the beach tend to have wavy hair because of being in the salt water and the sun. Beachy waves are a fun and easy curl style that looks very natural. Luckily, you can get the look without heat on your hair by just using hair gel and mousse.
What is the difference between hair gel and mousse?
Mousse is often used to add volume to your hair. It’s a lightweight product that doesn’t weigh hair down. It often looks like foam and is usually white or off-white in color.
Hair gel is a styling product that has a thicker consistency than mousse and is often clear in color. It is heavier than mousse and gives a shinier and stronger hold. It works very well when applied to wet hair.
When I use mousse in my hair, I really like using Australian products. I find his products are lightweight and don’t weigh my hair down. They are also very affordable and you get a lot for the price. For this tutorial I used Aussie Real Volume styling mousse.
Towel dry your hair with TheKatsMeow
Step 1: Wash hair and towel dry
To get wavy hair with gel and mousse, the first step is to wash your hair. Shampoo and condition your hair as per your normal hair routine.
Once you’ve washed and rinsed your hair, gently comb out any tangles you might have. It is important to be very careful when combing wet hair; When your hair is wet it is very delicate and prone to breakage and split ends. Be very careful when combing your wet hair so you don’t cause any damage.
Next, towel dry your hair. Take the towel in both hands and grab several strands of hair in your hands. Use the towel to gently squeeze the excess water out of your hair.
Scrunch in your hair TheKatsMeow
Step 2: Gel your hair
Take your hair gel bottle and squirt some gel into your palm. Rub your hands together so both hands have gel on them, then start scrunch sections of your hair. Continue kneading or balling your hands with the hair in them.
Start taking the ends of your hair and run your hair towards your scalp. When you reach your scalp, scrunch up your hair. Try to do this for all of your hair to make sure you get the hair gel all over.
Put 3 buns in your hair to make it wavy. TheKatsMeow
Step 3: Put your hair in a bun
If you have naturally curly or wavy hair you can skip this step, but many people have straight hair and need a little extra help with their waves.
Divide your hair into three parts: the back and both sides. Twist your hair into a bun with each section. Do this by gathering your hair as if making a ponytail. Make sure you gather your hair halfway up your head and that it’s not gathered too low; The higher the hair is gathered, the higher the bun will be and the more wavy the hair will be.
Hold the hair with one hand and with the other hand start twisting your ponytail and then wrap parts of it around the ponytail. Keep twisting it and then wrap it around your ponytail until you get to the end of your ponytail. Take the end section and tuck it under the bun.
Secure the bun with hair ties or a hair tie. Repeat this step for each section until you have three separate knots in your hair.
Step 4: Apply hairspray
Apply hairspray to your tied back hair. Make sure you get all of your hair and that you focus mainly on the buns. Allow the hairspray to dry before removing the buns or touching your hair.
Scrunch the hair near your scalp TheKatsMeow
Step 5: Mousse your hair
The next step is to lather your hair. Once the hairspray has dried, you can loosen the buns and let your hair fall freely. Remove the hair ties and untie the buns. Do not comb your hair with a brush as this will remove the waves you have created. Instead, you can run your fingers through your hair and gently loosen the curls, undoing any knots or tangles.
Take a small amount of mousse in your hand, apply it to both hands and start to scrunch the hair with the mousse around your scalp. With the mousse left on your hands, you can begin to scrunch your hair the same way you did the gel when your hair was wet. If your hair is still wet, you can blow dry it gently or let it dry naturally.
Voila! Now you have beach style hair waves with gel and mousse.

2. Electricity: Schedule annual safety and operational audits for wiring, hot water tanks, air conditioning, and ventilation systems.
3. Tools and Equipment: Tools and equipment should be strategically placed so that items are kept safe when not in use, but still accessible when needed. All tools and equipment should be in good working order, never put yourself or your customer at risk of faulty or broken equipment.
4. Equipment and Facilities: Keep all hydraulic chairs, headrests, washchairs, heat lamps, and lighting fixtures in good working order.
5. Ventilation: Proper ventilation and air circulation are extremely important in a modern shop or salon. Vapors from chemical applications and nail care products require sophisticated filter units that clean and detoxify the air. After installation, air filters should be changed or cleaned regularly.
6. Attire: Attire should look comfortable and professional. Clothing that is too loose can get in the way of your performance just as easily as tight clothing can limit it. Shoes should have non-slip rubber soles with good grip.
7. Children: Children must not be left unattended. Do not let children play, climb, or twirl on hydraulic chairs. Do not allow children to roam freely within the store with access to work areas, storage areas, etc. When cutting a child’s hair, try to anticipate their sudden movements. NEVER trust a young child to keep their head still while you approach their head area with scissors or other tools. Holding her head gently but firmly, holding the hair between your fingers at a low level, trim the hair on the inside of your palm, thus placing the barrier of your fingers between the tool and the child’s face.
8. Adult Clients: As hairdressers, many of the things we do to ensure the comfort of our clients also fall into the safety precautions category. Proper masking procedures and chemical application methods ensure the safety and comfort of the customer in terms of avoiding skin irritation, burns, wet or dirty clothing, etc. Using good manners and observing common courtesies also helps gain a reputation as a safety conscious individual courteous hairdresser.
9. Exits: Exits should be well signposted and identifiable. Check with your local building control authority for codes and requirements. Employees should know where exits are and how to get out of the building quickly in the event of a fire or other emergency.
10. Fire extinguishers: Fire extinguishers should be placed where they are easily accessible. All employees should be instructed in the use of fire extinguishers. It is a legal requirement to regularly inspect fire extinguishers. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations and state and local regulations.
11. Chemicals: Obtain a safety data sheet from your suppliers and keep a notebook of safety data sheets. Never mix cleaning products – especially bleach and ammonia. Each solution should be properly labelled, including spray bottles containing water or other substances not found in the original packaging.

Outlining techniques are commonly referred to as detailing or finishing techniques. They are the final step of any haircut or facial hair design service.
Detailing techniques focus on removing stray hairs that do not fit within the desired outline of the design. While the main purpose of the detailing is to outline and refine the haircut, including the facial and neck hair, remember to pay attention to the eyebrows and ear hair as well.
Scissors, trimmers and razors can all be used at different stages of the outline service. In this chapter we will focus on using scissors and trimmers. See Chapter 4 for more details on the razor technique.
outline
Before contouring, carefully inspect the nape area, sides of the neck and behind the ears for skin abnormalities such as blemishes, birthmarks and other skin growths. Provided there are no communicable skin diseases, open wounds and/or skin irritations, it is safe to perform the outlining service. Once you have determined that the service can be performed safely, remember to exercise caution when working near birthmarks and other raised skin lesions.
Sketch with scissors
To detail the finished design with scissors, comb the hair beyond the desired outline and then use the scissors to remove any hair that is outside of the desired outline. The shear over comb technique can be used to blend the newly created contour into the beard or haircut if needed.
Video: contouring with scissors
Note: This video has no sound.
Follow these guidelines when detailing with scissors for a safe and comfortable experience for the client:
Position the scissors so that they move against the natural fall of the hair
When working around the ears, the non-cutting hand should be used to gently push the ear forward or down to allow more room to trim around the area safely.
Pay attention to wrinkles or folds in the skin to avoid nicking/cutting the customer
Contour with trimmer
Contouring neck or facial hair with a trimmer/outliner requires the use of a trimmer in good condition, which means the trimmer blades must be reasonably sharp, free of debris and disinfected according to local standards.
The trimmer is typically used when contouring without a guard. In addition to the trimmers, a trimming or styling comb can be used to help create straight lines and/or angles in the contour. Alternatively, curved lines, such as around the ears, are generally done with a freehand technique. Once an outline is established, the scissors/trimmer over comb technique is often used to blend the newly established outline into the beard or haircut.
Follow these guidelines when detailing with trimmers for a safe and comfortable client experience:
Rotate the trimmer so the teeth are toward the skin to set the initial outline of your design. Carefully cut along the desired outline to create the guide.
Once the guideline is established, turn the trimmer over so the stationary blade is resting on the skin. Using light pressure, move the trimmer up towards the guideline.
When working around the ears, position the trimmer so that the outside edge is used to trim against the hair’s natural fall. The non-cutting hand should be used to gently push the ear forward or down to allow more room around the area to trim safely.
When contouring the nape, remember to work with the shape of the natural hairline whenever possible to encourage a more natural look during the growth phase.
Additional considerations: eyebrows and ears
eyebrows
In addition to contouring, your client may need eyebrow trimming or shaping and/or removing stray hairs on the ears. Cleaning these areas for the client will give them a much more polished final look.
The three most common ways to trim eyebrows are:
Trimmer over comb
shear-over-comb
Freehand trimming with scissors
Consult with the customer to determine if you need to eliminate length, density, or both.
How to perform an eyebrow correction service:
Project the eyebrow hairs with a comb and trim off the excess length with a trimmer or scissors.
Shape the top brow line by combing the brow hairs upwards and then use scissors to trim the excess hair just above the brow creating the desired shape.
Be extremely careful when trimming the eyebrows, working in this area with a slow, steady hand. Always instruct the client to close their eyes during the treatment so that the hair that is cut off does not fall into their eyes.
ears
The trimmer/outliner is used to gently remove stray and unwanted hair from the top, sides and earlobes. The hair on the inner ear should be removed with a gentle touch to avoid damaging the inner ear. Using a T-blade trimmer is preferable when working in tight spaces.

Why do barbers use shears?
Long-Bladed Barbering Scissors
Barbering techniques, such as scissor over the comb, require the scissor to cover a greater surface area of hair to cut it all off with one snip. The long blades on a scissor will ensure that the cutting line is even and not crooked.

Types of barber scissors
Through decades of experience and extensive knowledge of the hair industry, Scissor Tech has understood exactly what type of barber scissors are required for a barber. Don’t be fooled by clever marketing with our guide to the must-have hairdressing tools in your kit!
Short-edged scissors
When choosing professional hairdressing scissors, it is important to consider the length of the blades. Short-edged scissors can easily be used by barbers with smaller hands as they are lighter and offer better control, reducing hand fatigue.
All cutters with 4 to 5.5 inch blades are excellent for most hair techniques. This 2018 Matsui Matte Black Aichei Mountain Offset Scissors is only 5.5 inches long, making them the perfect tool for women’s hair cutting techniques like trimming and detailing haircuts.
Hairdressing scissors with a long blade
Hairdressing techniques, such as over-the-comb shearing, require the scissors to cover a larger surface area of hair in order to snip it all off in one snip. The long blades of a pair of scissors ensure that the cutting line is even and not crooked. We recommend barber scissors that are about 6 to 7 inches long for blunt cutting techniques that require straight cutting lines.
Wide-tooth thinner scissors
Thinner scissors with a small number of teeth are a must in your equipment. These types of thinners are designed to thin out clumps of hair. The thinning scissors’ small number of teeth means a higher percentage of hair is cut with each cut. This will save you time and effort when dealing with clients who have thick or coarse hair.
Scissors for blending/texturing
Sometimes when you’re thinning hair with regular clippers, it’s easy to go overboard and end up cutting more than you originally intended. To prevent this, you need to add a lot of teeth thinner to your kit. The large number of teeth on the texturizing scissors will slowly thin the hair without lifting too much at once. This gives you better control and precision when texturizing fine hair.
Pivoting scissors
Long hours in the salon can put a lot of pressure and tension on your wrist and hands. Adding a pair of rotating scissors to your collection can be a great solution to relieving pain in your precious hands. Regular barber scissors will pinch your thumb in a single position and it can become painful after a while. Swivel scissors are equipped with a rotating thumb ring that offers flexibility in handling and control. They also adapt to your natural hand movements thanks to the pivoting thumb ring. This relieves pain and provides more comfort when cutting hair.
Now that you know what type of hairdressing scissors you need in your set, browse through the above products and the rest of our premium selection in store to add to your own scissor collection. All the different types of hairdressing scissors that we offer are designed to make you a great hairdresser!

The 12 Best Mousses and Foams for Curly Hair

When it comes to adding volume and body to curls, there are many hair styling tools and products for curly hair that we can use. But there’s one thing we need to talk about in particular, especially if you’re looking to add definition to your curls: hair mousse.
Hair Mousse is a hair styling mousse with a light, airy texture that enhances your natural wave pattern and adds a little volume to your hair. Many people with wavy or fine hair prefer a lighter hair mousse or foam over a heavier hair gel or cream, which can weigh down the strands and make the scalp appear greasy more easily.
According to famous hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor, hair mousse adds body and definition to curly hair while keeping hair frizz-free. “Mousse is a multi-purpose hair product that you shouldn’t hesitate to use, especially if you’re looking to add texture, definition and longevity to your style,” says Taylor. It is suitable for all hair types but is particularly helpful for fine hair as it adds volume to normally limp hair. New York City-based hairstylist Alan David notes that mousse creates a protective barrier between your hair cuticle and natural elements.

How to use hair mousse
The best way to apply mousse or foam is pretty simple. After shampooing with curly hair shampoo and conditioner, Taylor says mousse is typically applied to towel-dried hair for better definition and hold. You can still apply mousse to dry hair, but she explains that it should mostly be saved for touch-ups. For type 3 or 4 curly hair, she recommends detangling first and spritzing on a leave-in conditioner for a moisture boost before applying mousse.
Next, you should be sure not to use too much mousse. Taylor explains that too much product will cause curls, twists, and waves to crunch. She says all you need is just a golf-sized amount of mousse to work into your hair. (You should also make sure not to flatten the airiness of the foam). After cutting off the hair, she suggests slowly working your way through each one. Gently scrunch the product towards your scalp, starting at the nape of your neck – or mid-shaft if you have curly hair – to get that volume. Then knead the ends of the hair towards the scalp. When you are done, continue with the next section of hair until you are done.
The final step is what Taylor calls “rake through.” Then, use your fingers to lightly comb the mousse through your hair to distribute it evenly. You can also use a wide-toothed comb or Denman brush if you have naturally curly hair to ensure the curls are detangled and smooth. Then take your hair dryer with a diffuser attachment, turn your head over and dry it off.
How to find the best mousse or mousse for your curly hair
According to Taylor, the first step to choosing the right hair mousse or mousse is knowing what you want your final look to be. She explains that mousse is suitable for a variety of hairstyles: some are designed to make curls look straight, others are formulated to make curls look textured.
She also advises taking a look at the ingredients and avoiding harmful chemicals that could make your tresses drier or more prone to breakage, like alcohol. Instead, look for nourishing ingredients like shea butter and monoi oil to keep curls strong and healthy.
