Photo by Alexandra DeFurio. Aidan is a 12-year-old girl who lives with her father half the time. Her parents are divorced and her father wanted his daughter to stay home in his new bachelor home. He wanted her to feel “understood” and validated as a girl entering her teenage years. The space is therefore sophisticated, but still young and innocent. It may have ‘grown up’ attributes like chic English paisley wallpaper by Osborne and Little and a cheeky ‘Like Forever’ poster, but it’s still comfortable enough to lounge on the flokati rug or snuggle up in the revamped vintage chair hang. Aidan was very involved in providing the design inspiration for the space. She had asked for a ‘beach feel’ and as design professionals know, the creative process takes the evolution of ideas and many are either discarded or improved upon. It was our job as designers to introduce Aidan to a world beyond Pottery Barn Kids. We incorporated her love of the ocean with a bespoke Benjamin Moore mixed paint color in a beautiful turquoise blue. The turquoise color is reflected in the tufted buttons on the custom headboard and the moldings surrounding the linen Roman shades on the window. Aidan wanted a meeting place for her friends. We provided additional seating by adding a remodeled vintage chair outfitted with a pinpoint “Love” cushion by Jonathan Adler and a shabby chic Moroccan stool. West Elm’s desk from the Parson’s collection gives a grown-up feel together with the Saarinen Tulip Chair. It’s easier for Aidan to do her homework when she’s feeling organized and clutter-free. Organization was a big factor in redesigning the space. We had to deal with memorabilia that would-be teenagers collect by the truckload. A custom corkboard above the desk is a great place to pin party invites and notes from friends. Room and Board’s Moda small dresser also stores books, magazines and makeup, which are kept in baskets from the Container Store. Aidan loves her room. It’s bright and cheerful, but also cheeky and fun. It has a hint of sass and a “beach” feel to it. This space will grow with her until she goes to college and then comes back as a guest. Thanks to her father, who wanted her to feel special, she is able to spend half her time in a space that reflects who she is.
