Typically, headboards are about the same width as your bed frame, which is typically 2 to 5 inches larger than your mattress, but they can go much wider. Below we talk about the different headboard sizes and how they can affect the look of your bed.

Standard headboard dimensions according to bed size

Most headboards are designed to fit standard bed frame sizes and mattress sizes. The average headboard is anywhere from exactly the same width as the bed frame to about 3 inches wider, and it’s usually between 14 and 33 inches higher than the top of the mattress.

Since mattresses average about 16 to 25 inches high, this means that the top of a standard headboard can be anywhere from 30 to 58 inches off the floor.

The overall height of the headboard also depends on the size of the bed. The longer and wider the bed, the higher the headboard needs to be to look appropriate. For example, a double bed headboard might be just 20 inches higher than the mattress and still be fine, but a 20 inch king bed headboard might look way too short because the bed is twice as wide and 5 inches longer .

How to install:

Hold the headboard against the wall and decide how high you want to mount it.

Use a pencil to mark the points where you want the bottom and top edges of your headboard to be.

Measure the distance between the hooks on the back of the headboard and place the tape below the marked top edge to identify at least two secure points for hanging your headboard. Make sure these points are on studs (supports behind the wall). Use a stud finder to identify studs that are 16 or 24 inches apart along the wall.

Drill holes into these mounting points on the studs to install the fasteners included with your headboard. If your headboard does not come with fasteners, purchase French clamps or Z-clips from any hardware store and screw them into the mounting points. These fasteners are used to attach heavy items such as cabinets, headboards or artwork to the wall.

Once the fasteners are in place on the wall, you can assemble the headboard.

After assembling the headboard, slide your platform bed against the wall so that the frame and headboard appear as one.

Attached to the bed frame

Most standard sized headboards such as twin, full, queen or king sizes can be fitted to bed frames. Some frames include headboards, but if you are purchasing your headboard separately, check the width to ensure the mounting holes on either side line up on your frame for a secure fit.

Your headboard should be the width of your frame or 3 to 4 inches wider. For this reason you cannot really mix sizes, so for example a double headboard should be used with a double platform bed.

Frame-mounted headboards are used on all types of beds such as pedestal beds, four-poster beds, sleigh beds or bunk beds.

How to install:

Locate the holes on the back of your bed and line them up with the mounting holes in the legs (struts) of the headboard. Some frames have screws screwed into the holes, while others may have stickers on the fabric cover to help you identify the holes.

Place the headboard against the bed to align with the holes on the bed frame.

Once you line up the holes you will need someone to hold it up for you while you slide the screws through the mounting holes.

Then slide a washer onto the bolt and thread a nut onto it until it is just finger tight. Repeat the same process on the other leg.

Make sure the headboard is centered. When you are happy with the look, use a wrench or pliers to tighten the screws and secure the headboard to the frame.

Freestanding headboards are thick so there is no need to mount them to the wall or bed frame. Due to the thick struts, they can be positioned between the wall and the bed frame by themselves. Typically, freestanding headboards include bookshelves or storage space and are 10 to 12 inches thick. They do not have pre-drilled holes and do not include mounting hardware, but they can be attached to a wall or bed frame bracket.

How to install:

Remove your bed to position the freestanding headboard, then slide the bed against the headboard to make it appear as one unit.

I hate that! Well, that was the situation with this beautiful antique headboard I found on Craigslist. I was looking for a large antique headboard for my daughter’s room and this fitted the bill perfectly; plus it was cheap to sell! Unfortunately it was for a larger mattress than the one I had. But where there’s a will there’s a way and I figured out how to pair a full size headboard with a twin mattress.

1. Camouflage the sides:

The first thing I did was add a bit of fabric (lace in this case) like a little canopy to camouflage the sides of the headboard. This step isn’t strictly necessary, but it fits the style of this room…

BTW, the top of the canopy is a small, white shelf I bought from Hobby Lobby.

2. Hide the gaps:

This step is really required to make the larger headboard work with the smaller mattress. I added a bit of fabric to hide the gaps between the mattress and the legs of the headboard. I folded two small panels of fabric and cut them to size, leaving some extra for seam allowances. Then I sewed the tops with my sewing machine and attached each to the sides of the bed with Velcro. Finally, I used temporary hem tape (no ironing required!) to hem them. I attached the fabric just below the top edge of the mattress tier….

None of the fabrics match, but they all match…

Since we didn’t use the footboard and side rails that came with the headboard, I decided to purchase a metal bed frame that doesn’t require a box spring. Plus, this rack is really handy because it’s high enough to fit a ton of plastic tubs under your bed. That way all the ugly plastic toys can hide and the cute things can fill their bookshelves 🙂

*Update: A reader asked a very good question about how the headboard and frame attach. The headboard attaches to the wall with a sturdy French cleat like this one. The freestanding metal bed frame is not connected to the headboard at all. It is simply pressed next to it. We had no trouble moving around and the whole setup worked really well.

Once the bedside table was placed on one side of the bed and a storage basket (similar basket, here) on the other, the difference in size between headboard and mattress didn’t seem so noticeable….

By the way, the fabric I used to camouflage the headboard was a leftover from the closet fabric….

No, it doesn’t fit perfectly. But for my facility, perfection is not the goal anyway! And one day, when my daughter is a little older, she probably won’t need the extra floor space to play. Then we can swap out the twin for a full size mattress and also attach the footboard and side rails.

Bonus Tip:

I was considering using this headboard with a toddler sized side-to-side mattress, like a daybed. But my daughter stayed in her crib until she was over three years old, and by then I figured she was ready for a twin mattress anyway. But if you have a younger child who would stay in a toddler bed for a while, you could use a full-size headboard with the crib or toddler mattress; Also, you would only need to put up one side rail for safety 🙂

You may have a really nice headboard that goes with your room decor, or even a headboard that you love so much that when shopping for a new bed you have trouble finding something that comes close. The question you are now asking yourself is: will my headboard fit in a new bed?

The short answer to this question is yes, but there are a few things you need to consider. The first thing to consider is what size bed was my existing headboard made for? In the UK beds are generally made in five widths. These are Single (135cm), Small Single (75cm), Three Quarter (120cm), Double (135cm), King Size (150cm) and Super King Size (180cm) with a rarer sixth option, the Three foot six (about 105 cm) is. . If your headboard is currently on a bed of one of these sizes and the bed you are considering purchasing is the same, chances are your headboard will fit. Most of the sizing issues are related to European bed sizes such as you can buy from a famous European flat pack furniture store.

If you have a bed frame (a bed that works as one unit with connected side rails, footboard and slatted bases) you will not be able to use the headboard of your new bed. Unless you have a third party specialist see if they can customize it to suit your needs.

How is the headboard attached to the bed?

Headboards are usually attached to the bed by special screws (supplied with the bed, not the headboard) that are secured through an attachment point, such as a bolt. B. a hole, a slot or a strut on the headboard, are guided into a screw in the bed. These fittings should already be recognizable on your existing bed; their position on your new bed is usually marked with a sticker.
