The game was originally believed to have evolved from the original beer pong, played with paddles[10] which is widely believed to have originated in the fraternities of Dartmouth College in the US in the 1950s and 1960s where it has since become part of the social culture of the campus. Bud pong[edit]

Bud Pong was the branded version of Beer Pong which, according to brewer Anheuser-Busch, involved drinking water, not Budweiser or any other beer. In the summer of 2005, the company began marketing “Bud Pong” kits to its distributors. Francine I. Katz, vice president of communications and consumer affairs, said in The New York Times that bud pong was not intended for underage drinkers because promotions took place in bars and not on campus. And it didn’t encourage binge drinking, she said, because official rules dictate that water should be used, not beer.[53]

The New York Times quoted a bartender at a club near Clemson University as saying she’s worked at several bud pong events and “never seen anyone play with water. It’s always beer. It’s just like any other beer pong.”[53]

Whether you are a current fraternity, aspiring fraternity, recovering fraternity, a romantic relationship with a fraternity, a parent of a fraternity, or a friend or foe of a fraternity, or are otherwise acquainted with a fraternity, you likely have some familiarity with a few beer-soaked drinking games. Chances are that one of these drinking games will involve beer mugs, ping pong balls, and drunk people trying to get the ping pong balls into the beer mugs. But is the game Beer Pong or Beirut? Did the fraternity stars who poured beers and banged their chests and declared themselves champions actually use the right term?

As with many things that involve large amounts of alcohol, the answer is hazy. The first beer pong games were played in Dartmouth in the early 1950’s when people played table tennis and left their beer mugs on the table; Someone decided that aiming the ball at the cups would be a good idea, and a drinking game was born. If a player lands a ball in one of their opponent’s cups, a member of the other team must drink the beer in that cup. If both players shoot, each may throw the ball again. If a player throws the ball on the table before it lands in one of the other team’s cups, two cups are discarded instead of one, but the other team can knock the ball away once it touches the table. If you wish, you can play in such a way that teams leave their cleared cups on the table until the end of the shooting round, instead of immediately drinking beer from them. In this variant, if both players shoot into the same cup, the opposing team removes three cups and the shooting team gets the balls back. After the first team has a turn, it is the second team’s turn and the game goes back and forth. Start your beer pong game

One player from each team is selected to make a first toss to determine which team starts first in the actual game.

Turns

Each beer pong team shoots twice per turn; each player shoots once. When both players take their shot, “returns” are awarded and that team gets another turn.

*There’s a catch: the defending (non-shooting) team can block a ricocheted ball as soon as it touches the table, while thrown shots are undefendable.

Sinking cups

A beer pong cup is “potted” as soon as the ball touches the contents of the cup. Any sunken cup must be removed from the table immediately and the defending team is responsible for drinking its contents. Team members take turns drinking.

Warning: Watch out for your cups that have been sunk but not drained. If the opposing team sinks a ball into the cup you’re drinking from, it’s game over.

If a cup is pocketed and the next player shoots and hits the same cup, the game also ends. Accidentally knocked over cups count as pocketed.

Reracking & Formations

A team is allowed to request a “re-rack” at the end of a round to maintain compact form.

Each team gets two Re-Racks per game that can be used almost anytime*. The standard beer pong rule is to take one re-rack with 6 cups remaining and the other with 2 or 3 cups remaining. Note: If playing beer pong with 6 cups each, one re-rack is allowed per team per game.

If a team eliminates the opposing team’s last beer pong cup, they still haven’t won. The defending team has a “redemption round” in which each player takes a turn. Redemption rounds are shot until you miss. If the defending team sinks the remaining cups in the payback round, overtime is forced. Over time

Should the game be forced into overtime, each team sets up three mugs in a triangle and fills them with beer. The team that hit the last cup to force overtime shoots first. Overtime is played like a normal game (with no re-racks), and double or triple overtime may be required before a team wins.

Table tennis tables come in all shapes and sizes. Well maybe not as they are all rectangular and the vast majority of tables are the same dimensions. There is a standard size defined by the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) that all manufacturers adhere to. Of course there are exceptions and some manufacturers offer smaller tables that don’t meet specific criteria.

Dimensions

The ITTF regulations define the standard dimensions of the playing surface. Finally, the playing surface directly affects gameplay, while other components such as the frame and legs support the table and provide structural integrity. The playing surface does not include the vertical sides of the table top, only the horizontal plane.

The playing surface (also called the top surface) must be rectangular and have the following dimensions:

Length: 2.74 meters or 9 feet

Width: 1.525 meters or 5 feet

Height: 76 cm or 2.5 feet from the ground

Have you ever seen a referee measuring the height of the net before a competitive game? They don’t do this out of curiosity, there are precise standards that must be met to ensure a fair and consistent gaming environment.

The correct net height is 15.25 cm or 6 inches and it is imperative that the entire length of the net is at this height. This is accomplished by maintaining sufficient tension in the cord that runs through the top of the net and is attached to the support posts at each end. The posts must be 6 inches high and also extend 6 inches beyond the sides of the table. The base of the net must be as close to the playing surface as possible.

ITTF approved tables are typically 22mm and 25mm thick and have a support structure under the table to ensure a consistent bounce.

What does ITTF-approved mean?

When a table is ITTF approved it means that it has passed all ITTF tests and received the required certification to be used in ITTF approved events. This is a rigorous approval process that takes into account the factors previously discussed.

However, not all standard size tables (regulation) are ITTF approved. In fact, relatively few tables have this certification due to the additional regulations and cost of certification. Most tables in homes and offices are not, and do not need to be, ITTF approved. ITTF approval is a requirement for using a table in international competitions, but is not required outside of these events. Certain tables, like the JOOLA Tour 2500, would likely pass the ITTF conformance test. However, most manufacturers do not seek this certification unless a table is intended for international competition. Certification comes with additional costs, both to obtain and to maintain the designation.

The Network Gathering

The ITTF states that a net assembly consists of a net, a suspension system, net posts and the clamps or other attachment method for attaching the net system to the table.

The top edge of the net must be hung at a height of 15.25 cm (6 inches) along its entire length. The bottom of the net must be as close to the playing surface as possible. The sides of the net must be fully attached to the net posts from top to bottom with no gaps. Also, the net and posts extend 6 inches beyond the edge of the playing surface on each side.
