Origin and name[edit]

The game was originally believed to have evolved from the original beer pong, played with paddles[10] which is widely believed to have originated in the fraternities of Dartmouth College in the US in the 1950s and 1960s where it has since become part of the social culture of the campus. The original version resembled a real table tennis game with a net and one or more mugs of beer on each side of the table.[11] Eventually, a paddleless version was invented and the names Beer Pong and Beirut were adopted in some areas of the United States sometime in the 1980s. In some places, Beer Pong refers to the version of the game with racquets and Beirut to the version without.[14]

Bucknell University’s student-run newspaper, The Bucknellian, claims that members of the Delta Ypsilon fraternity in Bucknell invented “throw pong,” a game very similar to beer pong, in the 1970s[9][15]. and that “Throw Pong” was then introduced at Lehigh University by fraternity brothers who attended Bucknell, and this led to the creation of the version of Beer Pong played today.

The origin of the name “Beirut” is disputed. A 2004 op-ed in The Daily Princetonian, Princeton University’s student newspaper, suggested that the name may have been coined at Bucknell or Lehigh University at the time of the Lebanese Civil War. Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, was the scene of much fighting during the war, particularly from grenade launchers.[16]

Team[edit]

Beer Pong is usually played with two teams of two to four players each. Each team begins the game by standing behind their cup racks at either end of the table.[1]

Although the game is typically played on either a ping pong table or a collapsible banquet table, enthusiasts can create a personalized table for use by friends and visitors. Generally this is a sheet of plywood cut to size, sometimes painted with sports, school or fraternity symbols and coated with a liquid-resistant coating.[17][18][19] Some companies sell tables, including portable and inflatable tables.[20] However, the game can be played on any flat surface.

The most commonly used cups are disposable 530 ml (18 US fl oz) plastic cups (like red Solo cups) with ridge lines to accurately measure the amount of beer to be poured into the cup. On each side of the table, teams build equilateral triangles with a point of convergence centered on the other team.[1] Games typically use ten cups.[1] Each team also usually has a separate cup of water that is used to rinse the ball down.

An inexpensive 3.2–5% ABV pale lager or beer is sometimes preferred because of the large quantities consumed over the course of multiple games. Sometimes, as per house rules, mugs of other spirits are used during play. For non-drinkers, the game can be played without beer, as is the case at Utah State University, where alcohol is not allowed on campus. Root beer is used instead.[22] For reasons of hygiene, the game can also be played with water cups, from which the players do not drink, but from a separate cup of beer or alcohol.

Traditionally, the game of beer pong was played with countless variations of rule sets. In recent years, organizations like the World Series of Beer Pong have established “official” rules. Typically, players adhere to uniform “house rules”, which are often consistent within a university or region of the country (e.g. “West Coast rules”) or may differ from house to house.[23] Number of cups, hopping, decanting, amount of alcohol, ranged shots to shoot from, etc. can all vary. All house rules should be posted or explained orally before the start of the game and should be understood by both teams.

The order of play varies – both players from one team can shoot, followed by both players from the other team, or players from opposite teams can switch back and forth.[24] A crafted cup must be drunk immediately and removed from the game. Some rule sets allow for “re-racking” (also known as “reforming”, “reordering”, “consolidating”, and other names), which is a rearranging of a team’s remaining cups after some have been removed. The formations, number of cups, when to rearrange, and so on, depend on the rule set. For example, a team with three cups remaining can ask the other team to “retrofit” the cups into a single triangle formation.

Standard house rules allow players to “finger” the ball or blow it out of the cup as the ball spins around the inside rim. Another common house rule states that if a team takes both shots during their turn, a “rollback” occurs, allowing each player on that team to shoot again. In the rules of the World Series of Beer Pong, only one ball “rollback” occurs, resulting in a maximum of three cups that can be made per round.

Before shooting, teams are allowed to dip the ping-pong balls in cups of water to wash the balls off. However, research has shown that the washing cups can still contain bacteria such as E. coli.[27][28] As a result, players can fill the mugs with water instead of beer, and keep a separate beer on the side for drinking.

Shooting techniques[edit]

The most common throwing technique is the archery shot, in which one grabs the ping-pong ball with the tips of the thumb and forefinger, holds the arm at an angle with the ball up, and then throws with a gentle elbow motion, keeping the upper arm parallel to the table.[23 ]

Some players throw in a “fastball” style, which uses more of a hard chopping motion to send the ball in a more direct line toward the intended target cup. A fastball shot can be beneficial when house rules dictate that a knocked over cup be removed from the table. In this case, a fastball can clear multiple cups if thrown hard enough.

A bounce shot is performed by throwing the ball toward the cups. If the other team has an opportunity to swipe a rebound ball, a rebound ball may be worth more than a cup, depending on house rules.[23]

Win the game[edit]

If a team makes their last trophy, the other team loses unless they can make all of their remaining trophies; this is called refutation or redemption.[29] If the losing team is able to hit their redemption shots, the game is forced into overtime, where three cups are used instead of the normal ten cups.

Another “house rule” may be established before or during the game in the midst of a shutout. A shutout in beer pong occurs when one team makes all ten of their cups and the opposing team makes none of their cups. If there is a shutout, the losing team must do what the two teams have decided, such as: E.g. strip driving (naked lap) or drinking a large amount of beer.

There are also other ways to end the game, depending on the “House Rules”. Mugs accidentally left on the shelf after being made are known as death/killing mugs. These mugs will immediately end the game if crafted again.

Health effects[edit]

The game may have several associated health risks. As with any activity that involves alcohol, beer pong can result in players becoming intoxicated or even so intoxicated that they experience alcohol poisoning. Some authors have mentioned that beer pong contributes to “runaway” college drinking.[30][31]

The supposed cleaning effect of the water “dunk” cup can be offset by bacteria in the cups.[27][28] During the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of young people in Denmark are said to have contracted the virus by playing a version of the game in which they held the ping-pong balls in their mouths and spat them into the cups.[32]

Some municipalities and states have attempted to ban beer pong either in bars or in general, believing it promotes binge drinking (see Health Effects above). In Oxford, Ohio, where Miami University is located, the city government tried to ban outdoor gambling.[34] In Arlington, Virginia[1] and Champaign-Urbana, Illinois[35] bar owners have been told to stop playing the game in their establishments. In the fall of 2007, Georgetown University officially banned all beer pong paraphernalia such as custom-built tables and possession of many ping-pong balls.

Time Magazine published an article titled “The War Against Beer Pong” on July 31, 2008, which identified legal restrictions and bans on the game in college and elsewhere.

In many states, players put water in cups to legally hold organized beer pong tournaments in bars. Some examples of this can be found in Michigan, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Tournaments and leagues[edit]

Beer pong tournaments are held in the United States at local, regional, and national levels.

The World Series of Beer Pong (WSOBP) is the largest beer pong tournament in the world. WSOBP IV, held in January 2009 at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, had a $50,000 grand prize and over 800 participants from the US and Canada.[38] WSOBP V, held in January 2010, had over 1,000 participants including teams from Ireland, Scotland, Germany and Japan. The World Beer Pong Tour has stops in various cities and also has cash prizes.[39]

A more common organization of beer pong games are leagues that operate on a local or regional level. Usually a group of pong enthusiasts form teams (partnerships) and play each other weekly. Sometimes the leagues have websites, leaderboards and statistics,[40] while others were founded by college students for the purpose of intra-campus competition, such as at the University of California, Santa Barbara with the “Isla Vista Beer Pong League”,[41] and at New York University.[42]

The Wall Street Journal, Time and other media outlets have reported an increase in stores selling beer pong paraphernalia such as tables, mats, mugs or clothing.[2][43] Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong[44] is a documentary that follows a number of competitive players as they prepare for WSOBP II and eventually compete for the $20,000 grand prize. This documentary, directed by Dan Lindsay, premiered on June 13, 2008 at the CineVegas Film Festival. Rick Reilly wrote an entire column on the World Series of Beer Pong IV for ESPN The Magazine.[45]

The Associated Press cited the game and other drinking games as a factor in college student deaths.[46]

Time Magazine recently ran an article on the popularity of beer pong[43] and posted a video on its website.[47] In both cases, players claimed beer pong was more of a sport than a game – similar to billiards and darts.

The game was a recurring segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, with host Fallon playing against celebrity female guests including Betty White, Serena Williams, Anna Kournikova, Charlize Theron and Jessica Alba.

The Colbert report included a section on the CDC study hoax.[49][50]

A sequel to the 2000 comedy Road Trip, Road Trip: Beer Pong starred the game prominently. Agnes Scott College, where most of the film was shot, asked to be uncredited after student complaints.[51]

Bud pong[edit]

Bud Pong was the branded version of Beer Pong which, according to brewer Anheuser-Busch, involved drinking water, not Budweiser or any other beer. In the summer of 2005, the company began marketing “Bud Pong” kits to its distributors. Francine I. Katz, vice president of communications and consumer affairs, said in The New York Times that bud pong was not intended for underage drinkers because promotions took place in bars and not on campus. And it didn’t encourage binge drinking, she said, because official rules dictate that water should be used, not beer.[53]

The New York Times quoted a bartender at a club near Clemson University as saying she’s worked at several bud pong events and “never seen anyone play with water. It’s always beer. It’s just like any other beer pong.”[53]

Some have expressed disbelief at Anheuser-Busch’s public statements. Henry Wechsler, director of the College Alcohol Study at the Harvard School of Public Health, said: “Why would alcohol companies sponsor games involving drinking water? with water is about as likely as a teenager using the rolling paper he bought at the supermarket to smoke tobacco.”[54]

However, playing with water has become increasingly common on college campuses due to cost-saving effects. Instead of drinking the beer from a glass every time a player sinks a shot, the player simply takes a shot or sip of their own drink every time the opposing team scores. This is usually done when there isn’t enough beer to accommodate a large number of games during the party.

In July 2008, JV Games Inc. released a downloadable video game for the Wii console called Frat Party Games: Beer Pong. The ESRB rated it as suitable for ages 13 and up, but after this was questioned by the Connecticut Attorney General, the game was renamed Frat Party Games: Pong Toss and all references to alcohol were removed.

Whether you are a current fraternity, aspiring fraternity, recovering fraternity, a romantic relationship with a fraternity, a parent of a fraternity, or a friend or foe of a fraternity, or are otherwise acquainted with a fraternity, you likely have some familiarity with a few beer-soaked drinking games. Chances are that one of these drinking games will involve beer mugs, ping pong balls, and drunk people trying to get the ping pong balls into the beer mugs. But is the game Beer Pong or Beirut? Did the fraternity stars who poured beers and banged their chests and declared themselves champions actually use the right term?

As with many things that involve large amounts of alcohol, the answer is hazy. The first beer pong games were played in Dartmouth in the early 1950’s when people played table tennis and left their beer mugs on the table; Someone decided that aiming the ball at the cups would be a good idea, and a drinking game was born. But as the game spread across the United States, in areas unfamiliar with the original Dartmouth version, people started dropping the name “Beirut” – calling it “Beer Pong” instead. Some might still use the name Beirut — and if they do, you’ll know what game it’s about — but when you hear the term “beer pong,” it could mean one of two things.
