This investigative documentary looks behind the shiny facade of luxury fashion. Shot with a hidden camera, it shows the brutal conditions in Chinese fur farms and the exploitation of migrants in Italian tanneries.
Fine handcrafted bags by Gucci, Prada and Max Mara in the windows of luxury fashion boutiques are objects of passionate desire. Luxury labels generate over 70 percent of their sales with leather products. But hardly anyone knows the reality of their production. The big fashion brands adhere to a modern code of conduct that also applies to their direct suppliers. But who controls the subcontractors? The film looks behind the beautiful displays to see where the raw material comes from: tanneries in Italy, where migrants work in miserable and unsafe working conditions to produce the leather for luxury handbags; and behind the scenes of the Chinese fur industry, where the animals are kept in appalling hygienic conditions and slaughtered in a cruel manner.

With their beautiful storefronts and finely crafted goods, brands like Gucci, Max Mara, Louis Vuitton and Prada are considered the pinnacle of luxury, conjuring up images of master craftsmen finely crafting each item. But – as this study shows – behind the glamorous exterior, all that glitters is not gold.
In the world of luxury goods, leather means record-breaking profits. For brands like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, over 70% of their profits come from leather goods. But where does this luxurious leather come from? Most of the raw material is tanned in a small region in Tuscany, where the heavy, difficult labor is outsourced to immigrants. Temperatures in the factories can reach 45°C and workers – many on temporary contracts – are often exploited and abused. We hear of workers who have been seriously injured at work and then attacked for daring to complain.
Then there’s fur, the other iconic luxury material. Today, most fur comes from China, where 70 million animals are killed for their fur every year. Here animals have no rights or protection and the conditions on the farms are appalling. We managed to gain access to one of these farms and what we found was a miles away from the luxurious image the brands are promoting.
Animal suffering, miserable hygiene conditions… discoveries that get your blood pumping. From haute couture at Paris Fashion Week to Chinese and Italian backroom boutiques, we explore the hidden side of luxury.
