The following article is an excerpt from Shukr: An Inspirational Dua and Gratitude Journal for Women by Gabrielle Deonath, available today!

This diary was created especially for you – the modern Muslim woman. While a number of gratitude or prayer journals are available for women of other faiths, few of these books are aimed directly at Muslimah.

As women, we are often overwhelmed with responsibilities and commitments in various areas of our lives, especially our careers and personal relationships. I feel this pressure in my own life, even as a single woman in my twenties. Although I have no home to run or children to care for, I still feel like there are not enough hours in the day to take care of myself the way I should – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. When I have to choose how to practice self-care, I’ve often put my faith at the bottom of the to-do list. The more women I speak to, the more I realize how common this problem is for many of us of all adult ages.

Shukr aims to help you prioritize your relationship with Allah (SWT) by giving you space to reflect on hadiths, duas and ayas from the Quran in small morsels that fit into your busy schedule. This journal is divided into six sections that focus on issues relevant to our daily lives: Faith and Worship, Relationships, Growth and Success, Health, Community, and Reflections

My personal relationship with Islam and Allah is constantly evolving. It has ebbed and flowed at various stages of my life, but I am grateful that something keeps drawing me back to Allah (SWT), affirming my iman and continuing to keep faith at the center of my life.

I don’t know about you, but I feel so much gratitude at this moment. I hope reading a small part of my story inspires you to reflect on the divine ways that Allah (SWT) has drawn you towards in your life and I hope it inspires you to shukr in the depths of your heart as you begin to feel this diary. If you take away anything from this diary experience, I hope it is this: If you seek Allah (SWT), He will be there.

8 Tips for Making Dua, by Shukr

When you make dua it is your one on one time with Allah (SWT) to ask for whatever you want and to speak from your heart. To increase the likelihood that your prayers will be accepted, consider the following eight tips:

1. Say your duas out loud.

Don’t recite your prayers too loudly or too quietly, but find a way in between. [Qur’an, 17:110]

2. Start praising Allah (SWT).

Amr bin Malik Al-Janbi narrated that he heard Fadalah bin ‘Ubaid say: “The Prophet (saww) said: ‘If any of you make salat, then let him start expressing his gratitude to Allah and praising Him…'” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

3. Send prayers to the Prophet (SAW).

“…Then let him send salat to the Prophet (SAW), then let him supplicate for it whatever he wants.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

4. Mention the Attributes of Allah (SWT) using the Ninety-Nine Names in a manner related to your Duas.

Allah has the most beautiful names. So invoke Him through them.” [Qur’an, 7:180]

5. Ask for forgiveness.

Under the authority of Anas (RA) who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say: “Allah Almighty said: ‘O son of Adam, as long as you call on Me and ask Me, I will forgive you for what You did and I won’t mind. O son of Adam, if your sins reached the clouds of heaven and you asked my forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to me with sins almost as big as the earth and then face me and not ascribe me a partner, I would bring you forgiveness almost as big as them.’” [40 Hadith Qudsi ]

6. Mention good deeds you have done for Allah (SWT).

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar narrated: The Prophet (saw) said: While three men were walking, it started to rain and they took shelter in a cave in a mountain. A large stone rolled down from the mountain and closed the entrance to the cave. They said to each other: “Remember good deeds that you did only for the sake of Allah and invoke Allah referring to those deeds so that He may remove this stone from you.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]

7. Make dua for others.

Abu Dharr narrated that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: “There is no believing servant who supplicates for his brother behind his back (in his absence) lest the angels say: ‘The same be for you.'” [Sahih muslim ]

8. Do dua often and not only in times of need.

Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Whoever wishes Allah to answer him in distress and sorrow, let him pray abundantly when he feels well. [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

Best dua to solve any problem

What are the Rabbana Duas?

There are forty revealed duas in the Qur’an that begin with the Arabic word Rabbana (رَبَّنَا) which means “Our Lord”. The verse then proceeds to ask Allah (swt) for something, forgiveness, wealth, success, prosperity, protection, security, victory etc. Collectively these are known as the 40 Rabbana Duas of the Quran and have some of the best Quranic Duas that a person can learn, memorize and recite.

Some of these du’as also have a powerful backstory. We’ll try to include a little synopsis and give you a little context on when/where/why they were revealed. Perhaps you are already familiar with some of those famous prophetic duas recited by the Prophets at times when everything seemed against them and they were at the height of adversity.

We include transcription and translation into English for each du’a to help you pronounce and understand the meaning of the Rabbana duas.

40 Rabbana Duas

Prophetic Du’a for protection recited by Prophet Dawud (as): Dawud (as) was a smaller, younger man and on paper it did not appear that he would prefer to win a fight against Jalut (Goliath). But we are told: “And Allah granted him dominion and wisdom and imparted to him the knowledge of whatever He willed.” (2:251)

It shows humility in your character, protects you from boasting or becoming proud. Constant repentance is a trait that shows your complete trust in Allah (swt) for all things.

Allah (swt) answers in the following verse: “I will send it down to you; but whoever of you disbelieves after that I will give a punishment which I will not give to anyone in the worlds.”

Intellectually we may know that the fate of those who do wrong will not be a pleasant one, but in our daily lives we may be blind to this reality as it plays out inch by inch. Only when the end is shown do we recognize the error in our judgement. Unfortunately, by then it will be too late. This du’a asks Allah to protect us from falling victim to this fate.

Our Lord has covered all things with knowledge.” Then he recited the above Rabbana du’a.

They will praise Allah (swt) and thank him endlessly for being forgiving and thankful. We are imperfect, we will do wrong and yet Allah (swt) will forgive us and appreciate our efforts to accomplish the few deeds we have done in our life. Little because we can never do enough to truly earn the rewards in Paradise. In this Du'a it refers to Allah as Al-Ghafoor and Ash-Shakur, two of His rightful names and attributes. Rabbana Dua No. 34 «رلّ ششنَا وَسِعْure كُلّ ششْءٍ ر رمةًةً وَلْمًا ففاغْفِرْ لِلّذِینِا Seitenوووِا Seitenوووِا Seitenووِا تَا تَا تَا تَا تَا تَا تَا تَا تَا تَا Rabbanaa wasi'ta kulla shai'ir rahmatanw wa 'ilman faghfir lillazeena taaboo wattaba'oo sabeelaka wa qihim 'azaabal Jaheem "Our Lord, You have embraced all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your path and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire." - 40:7 - Recommended use: Allah's (swt) knowledge and mercy know no bounds, they are infinite. The du'a ends by asking for protection on Judgment Day and asking to receive His mercy, which would be the best of gifts. Those who "preceded us in the faith" refer to those who embraced Islam before the migration from Mecca to Yathrib. Those who came after were all those who had embraced Islam after migration. This du'a is a reminder that we are one ummah and we should not hold grudges or hatred towards one another. Furthermore, it is also a prayer of remembrance that this life is only temporary. The final destination is when we return to Allah (swt). Rabbana Dua #39 رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِیزُ الْحَكِیمُ Rabbana laa taj’alnaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo waghfir lanaa rabbanaaa innaka antal azeezul hakeem “Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelievers and forgive us, our Lord. To not make us “objects of torment” meaning if the disbelievers won, they would falsely assume what they followed was correct. They would question how Allah (swt) would allow his believers to lose. The du’a then continues referring to Allah (swt) as azeezul hakeem meaning the most powerful and wise. Rabbana Dua #40 رَبَّنَآ أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَآ ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِیرٌ Rabbanaaa atmim lanaa nooranaa waghfir lana innaka ‘alaa kulli shai’in qadeer “Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.” – 66:8 – Recommended use: Another beautiful du’a asking for Jannah. We learn in Surah Al-Hadid verse 12 how on the day of judgment the believing men and women will have a light illuminating from their right hands. They will be told “a good tiding for you today.” The hypocrites will find themselves stumbling in darkness. This du’a asks Allah (swt) to perfect or to complete our light on that day and to forgive us our sins. Indeed, Allah (swt) is competent and powerful over all things.

Which dua for success?

Dua For Success and Victory

My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sin, answer my supplication, clearly establish my evidence, guide my heart, make true my tongue and draw out malice in my breast.

Best dua to solve any problem

Before going into duas and asking Allah for success, it is helpful to know what you are asking for. It helps to be specific.

So before you proceed to answer the following question, take a second: what is success for you?

Everyone has their own idea of “making it,” so it will be different for everyone, but really take a second to try and define what success means to you.

Most people find this difficult to answer because they haven’t really thought about it. How can you ask for help or move toward something that you haven’t clearly defined?

It’s like a boat setting off on a journey with no destination marked on a map. It will just float wherever the tide takes it.

Success is not just wealth or fame, these answers are superficial and the view society has drawn. What about creative freedom, the ability to work toward a worthwhile goal or aspiration, or enjoying time with your family?

An abstract topic like success cannot be properly defined, it is variable to the person and the core values that are important to that person. For one person, having loads of money is his vision of success, and that may not be attractive to you.

The point I am trying to make is that whatever you want in life you need to ask yourself why that goal if you are clear and then develop a plan for how to achieve it then do the necessary work perform and achieve sacrifice becomes easier.

Once you have figured out what you want, be it success in business or success on an exam, make all the necessary preparations, don’t let ignorance be the cause of your failure. Next, ask Allah for help because nothing can happen without His will. Trust the process, be patient and consistent. Whether you end up building the next billion dollar company or passing the exam with flying colors is not in your hands. That much is up to Allah.

All we can do is work and make dua for our success, that’s it.

How can I send salawat to prophet?

O Allaah, send Your salaah (grace, honour and mercy) upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent Your salaah upon the family of Ibraaheem, and send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibraaheem.

Best dua to solve any problem

Sending blessings to the Prophet ﷺ is one of the greatest acts of worship encouraged in Islam and it is one of the most beneficial supplications for a person in this world and in the hereafter and it is one of the prerequisites for love, worship and respect for the Prophet ﷺ and gives him his rights. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Allah sends His greeting (mercies, honors, blessings, mercy) to the Prophet and also to His angels (asks Allah to bless him and forgive him). Oh you, who believe! Send your greeting (ask Allah to bless him) and (you should) salute (salute) him with the Islamic manner of salutation (greeting, i.e. As¬Salâmu ‘Alaikum)”

[al-Ahzaab 33:56].

The Prophet ﷺ also urged us to do this, explaining that it brings multiple rewards and that it is a means of obtaining forgiveness of sins and meeting one’s needs. He ﷺ said: “Whoever blesses me once, Allah will send him tenfold blessings and blot out ten misdeeds from him and raise him by ten degrees in status.” Narrated by an-Nasaa’i (1297); classified as saheeh by al-Albaani in Sahih Sunan an-Nasaa’i.

The virtue of blessing the Prophet ﷺ does not only benefit the Prophet ﷺ; rather, it also benefits the one who blesses it. The virtue mentioned in the hadiths quoted above and in other hadiths benefits the one who sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.

Durood and its meaning.

I

“Allaahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala Aali Muhammad kama salayta ‘ala Ibrahim wa ‘ala aali Ibraaheem innaka hameedun majeed,

Allahumma baarik ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala Aali Muhammad kama baarakta ‘ala Ibrahim wa ala aali Ibraaheem innaka hameedun majeed.

O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.

O Allah! Send your blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, just as you sent your blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for you are the most praiseworthy, the most glorious.’

(Sahih Bukhari)

I

I

“Allaahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala Aali Muhammad kama salayta ‘ala aali Ibraaheem, wa baarik ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad kama baarakta ‘ala aali Ibraaheem innaka hameedun majeed

O Allah send prayers on Muhammad and on Muhammad’s family as You sent prayers on Ibrahim’s family and send blessings on Muhammad and on Muhammad’s family as You sent blessings on Ibrahim’s family, You are verily worthy of praise, full of glory.

(Bukhari & Muslim)

“Salli ‘ala Muhammad (send prayers to Muhammad).” The prayers of Allah to Muhammad mean that He praises him before the higher assembly, i.e. before the angels who are close to Him.

“Wa ala aali Muhammad (and upon the family of Muhammad)” means and send blessings upon the family of Muhammad. It has been said that Muhammad’s family are his followers who follow his religion; or it was said that the family of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) were his believing relatives.

“Kama salayta ‘ala Ibrahim (when You sent prayers on Ibrahim’s family).” Some of the scholars said what this means: Just as You previously bestowed Your bounty on the family of Ibraahim, then bestow Your bounty on Muhammad and His family.

“Baarik ‘ala Muhammad wa ‘ala aali Muhammad, means to send down blessings. Blessing means a lot of good things on a continuous and ongoing basis.

“Kama baarakta ‘ala aali Ibraaheem (when You sent blessings on the family of Ibraaheem)”, i.e. O Lord, You have bestowed Your favor on the family of Ibraaheem and blessed them, so send blessings on the family of Muhammad.

“Innaka hameedun majeed (You are truly worthy of praise, full of glory). Hameed means praiseworthy and praiseworthy, praising his slaves and close friends who obey his commands, and praiseworthy, to be praised for his attributes of perfection and great blessings.

Majeed means possessor of majesty. Majesty means greatness and perfect power.

Another Sahih Durood

O Allah, send Your salah (mercy, honor and mercy) on Muhammad and on his wives and descendants as You sent Your salah on the family of Ibrahim, and send Your blessings on Muhammad and on his wives and descendants as You send Your blessings sent blessings to Ibrahim’s family. You are truly Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.”

(Bukhari & Muslim)

It is better to vary the phrases used, to switch between the versions narrated, to recite sometimes one and sometimes the other, in order to follow Sunnah and Sharia, and so that reciting one version does not lead to neglecting another becomes what is also proved, and because there are many other advantages to it which are not obtained by always reciting one and not the other.

But we should point out that it is not mandatory to combine and mix these phrases to make a combination of all in one; rather, it contradicts the Sunna, as has been pointed out by a number of scholars.

Shortening Durood

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar stated in Fath al-Baari (11/166) that the majority of scholars think that any formulation that serves the purpose of sending blessings upon him is acceptable, but in prayer one should refer to the Keep wording that has been narrated and do not omit any part of it to be sure to follow the Sunnah and what is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ.

For example, as part of Morning & Evening, we read a smaller version:-

مُحَمَّدٍ

Allahumma salli wa sallim ‘alaa Nabiyyina Muhammadin.

O Allah, we ask for your peace and blessings on our Prophet Muhammad.

dua

The Prophet ﷺ said, “When any of you pray, let him begin to praise Allah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, then let him ask for whatever he pleases.” (Tirmidhi, from al-Albaani classed as saheeh).

‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “Du’aa’ is suspended between heaven and earth and none of it will be recorded until you have blessed your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on him ).” (Tirmidhi, Ibn Katheer said: Its isnad is Jayyid. Classified as Hasan by al-Albaani).

This hadith indicates that it is mustahabb to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ when he makes du’a.

Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allaah, I want to send you more blessings (before offering the prayer); How much of my request should I spend on this? He ﷺ said: “Whatever you want.” I said: A quarter? He ﷺ said: “Whatever you want, but if you do more, it will be better for you.” I said: Half? He ﷺ said: “Whatever you want, but if you do more, it will be better for you.” I said: Two thirds? He ﷺ said: “Whatever you want, but if you do more, it will be better for you.” I said: Should I make all my prayers for it? He ﷺ said: “Then your worries are done and your sins forgiven.” (Tirmidhi classified as Hasan by al-Albaani).

What this hadith means is to encourage people to send many blessings and peace to the Prophet ﷺ because of the great reward.

You should understand that the hadith does not mean that a person should not offer any du’aa for himself at all and only send blessings to the Prophet ﷺ. This is in contrast to his own practice and teaching of different du’a’s in different situations, such as the du’a’s during prayer, those recited in the morning and afternoon, istikhaarah and so on. One should offer much du’a’ of all kinds, in prayer and otherwise, whether that du’a’ is unconnected with any time or situation or connected with a time or situation. The Companions and those who came after them did not give up offering Du’a’, in prayer or otherwise, asking for whatever good they needed in this world and the Hereafter, and were content with that, only to send a lot of blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.

Intercession of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ said: “If you hear the muezzin, say what he says, then send blessings to me, because whoever blesses me, Allah will send blessings tenfold.” Then ask Allah to grant me al-Waselah because it is a level in paradise that only one of the servants of Allah will reach and I hope that I will be that one. Whoever asks al-waselah for me, he will be permitted to intercede.” Narrated by Muslim

Dua after Adhan

O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and prayer to be performed, grant Muhammad the privilege and also the eminence and raise him to the glorified position which You have promised. Verily, you never break your promise

MEANING OF SENDING BLESSINGS

Kaab Ibn Ujrah (radhi Allaahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ said: “Come closer to the Mimbar” and we approached the Mimbar. When He ﷺ climbed the first step of the Mimbar, He ﷺ said “Aameen”, When He ﷺ climbed the second step, He ﷺ said “Aameen”, When He ﷺ climbed the third step, He ﷺ said “Aameen”. came down, we said: “O Rasool Allah ﷺ, we heard something from you today that we have never heard before.” He ﷺ said: When I climbed the first step, the angel Jibrail (alaihi as-salam) appeared in front of me and said:

“Annihilation for him who found the blessed month of Ramdhan and let it pass without attaining forgiveness,” to which I said “Aameen.”

When I went up the second step, he said: “Destruction for the one before whom your name is, and then he does not make dua for Allah’s blessings on me (saying for example: “Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam”).” I replied : “Aameen”.

As I ascended the third step, he said, “Annihilation to him in whose lifetime his parents, or any of them, reach old age and (because he does not serve them) is not permitted to enter Jannah.” I said, “Aameen.” . (Hakim, Baihaqi)

Note In this hadith it seems that Jibraeel (alaihi as-salam) uttered three curses, after which Rasulullah ﷺ said Aameen each time. In al-Durr al-Mansur it is narrated that Jibraeel (alaihi as-salam) advised Rasulullah ﷺ to say Aameen. Being an angel of such high rank, Jibraeel will certainly accept these curses. May Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) in His infinite mercy grant us His help and protect us from these three dangers.

Benefits of sending Salaat to the Prophet ﷺ

Imam Ibnul-Qayyim-rahimahullah in his book Jalaa ul-Afhaam fee Fadlis-Salaati was-Salaam ‘alaa khayril anaam (صلى الله عليه و سلم) mentions benefits derived from sending Salaat to Allah’s Messenger:

Obeying the command of Allah, the Perfect and Exalted. [i.e. in Aayah 65 by Suratul-Ahzaab]. Agreeing with Him – He the Perfect – in sending Salaat upon him, although the two kinds of Salaat are different. So our prayer for him is a supplication and a request, whereas the prayer of Allah Most High for him is glorifying and exalting…. Agreement with the angels in it. The receiving of ten Salawat [[plural of Salaat]] from Allah by the person who sends Salaat to him once. That it will be raised by ten levels. That he wrote ten good deeds for himself. That ten sins are blotted out of him. That if he puts that first, it is to be hoped that his plea will be answered. Thus it causes supplication to ascend to the Lord of creation, while before it hovered between heaven and earth. It is a means of obtaining his (صلى الله عليه و سلم) intercession, if accompanied by a request for alwaseelah (a unique station in Paradise) for him, or even when alone… It is a means of forgiveness from sins. It is one thing for Allah to satisfy the servant in everything that concerns him. It is a means for the person to draw near to him on the Day of Resurrection (صلى الله عليه و سلم)… It is a cause for the fulfillment of your needs. It is a cause for Allah to send Salaat upon the person and for the Salah of His angels upon him. It is a purification (zakat) and purification for the person. It is a reason for the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) to respond to the one who sends Salaat and Salaam upon him. It is a good thing for the assembly and for not becoming a source of regret for its people on the Day of Resurrection. It repels the description of being a miser from the person if they send Salaat on them whenever he (صلى الله عليه و سلم) is mentioned. He is saved from being asked to have his nose split into dust because he gave it up when he (صلى الله عليه و سلم) was mentioned. It puts its companion on the path to Paradise, and it causes the one who leaves it to be mistaken about it. It protects from the stench of a gathering where Allah and His Messenger are not mentioned, and where Allah Most High is not praised and glorified, and where His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم) is not sent with the salah. It is a means of completing the speech begun with the praise of Allah and prayer for His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم). It removes the servant from rudeness. It is a reason for Allah – the Perfect – to give benevolent praise to the one who sends Salaat upon him by praising him to the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth. This is because the one who sends him Salaat is asking Allah to praise His Messenger and to honor and ennoble him. So the reward corresponds to the type of deed, so whoever sends Salaat must in turn receive some form of it. It is a cause of blessing for the one who sends Salaat in himself, in his deeds and in his life and the means of his welfare. This is because the one who sends Salaat supplicates his Lord that He should bless him and his true followers; and this request is heard; and the reward depends on the fact. It is a means of gaining the mercy of Allah, since mercy is either the meaning of salaat – according to some; or it is in some other way something required of her and required of her – as the saying goes. So the one who sends him Salaat must surely receive mercy. It is a means of maintaining and increasing and multiplying one’s love for the Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم); and this is one of the essential foundations of Iman, without which it will not be complete; for the more a servant mentions the one he loves, and remembers him in his heart, and remembers his good qualities, and the things that inspire love for him, then his love for him will increase, and the longing after him will increase, and this will overcome his whole heart. But if he turns away from mentioning him and thinking of him and his good qualities in his heart, then the love for him in his heart will diminish. Thus there is nothing more pleasing to the lover than to see the one he loves, and nothing pleases his heart more than mentioning him and thinking of him and his good qualities. So when this becomes strong in his heart, then his tongue will praise and praise him… This Salaat upon him (صلى الله عليه و سلم) is a cause of him loving that person. So because it is a reason for the one who sends Salaat on him to increase in love for him, it is also a reason for him to love the one who sends Salaat on him (صلى الله عليه و سلم). It is a means for the person’s guidance and for his heart to have life… That sending Salaat upon him fulfills the least part of his right… That there is remembrance of Allah and gratitude to Him and acknowledgment of His favours His servants include sending him. So the one who sends the greeting to him (صلى الله عليه و سلم) includes in his greeting to him the remembrance of Allah and the remembrance of His Messenger… This greeting to him from the person is the supplication (du’aa) and the you of the person. aa to his master.

Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him until the Day of Judgment, as long as night and day follow one another. Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him as long as righteous people remember him.

May Allah help us all to make the best of acts of obedience and protect us from the evil within our own selves, for He is the most bountiful, the most generous.

Do you have to pray to make dua?

Others find it appropriate to offer dua at any point during prayer, including opening or closing prayer with it, but either way each of the five daily salah provide a perfect opportunity to make dua. It is always required to perform wudu (ritual washing) and face qibla (toward the Kaaba in Mecca) during salah.

How to make Dua

How often do you want to make a heartfelt dua but struggle to convey your words to Allah? Or do you feel like you’re at a loss for words even when you make a general dua? Well, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide on how to make your duas more effective. We have highlighted both the etiquette and actions of dua which will help bring more substance and purpose when asking or speaking to Allah (swt) in general.

“And if my servants ask you about me, then I am certainly very near; I hear the supplicant’s prayer when he calls upon Me, so they should heed My call and believe in Me so that they may walk on the right path.” [2:186]

Etiquette of your Dua:

1. Start with Salawat on the Prophet Saw (Allahummasalli…)

The Prophet (saws) said: “Every Dua is withheld until you send blessings to the Prophet.”

2. Use Allah’s beautiful names to invoke Him. B. Al-Rahman, Al-Raheem, Al-Khaliq

3. Praise Allah as He deserves

4. Face the Qibla

‘Umar (ra) narrated: “…then the Prophet (saw) turned to look at the Qibla, then stretched out his hands and started shouting to his Lord.”

5. Raise your hands to the position where you will make dua

6. Trust that your dua will be accepted and Allah will respond in one way or another

Ibn al-Jawzi (r.) said. “I think part of the test is when a believer pleads and doesn’t get an answer, and he repeats the dua for a long time and sees no sign of an answer. He should realize that this is a test and needs patience.”

7. Ask often – don’t lose hope. Remember, Allah’s kingdom is vast, so don’t limit yourself when asking anything of Him.

8. Be firm in your request – i.e. do not say “Allah forgive me if you wish it”, but ask Allah for exactly what you want.

Content of your dua:

1. Ask Allah for exactly what you want. Talk to Allah as if you were having a conversation with Him. Describe to him what’s on your mind. tell him how you feel Be very precise in your dua.

2. When making dua for all Muslims around the world, don’t just end it with “Allah help all Muslims”. Better be specific, describe to Allah what is going on. Ask Him specifically for those in Rohingya, in Syria, in Gaza, etc. For that, you need to be aware of what is happening with our brothers and sisters around the world. Do your research, stay alert and dua them all.

3. Sometimes when making dua we run out of things to say so we say “ameen” and finish our dua quickly. However, don’t give up when you face this stillness in your dua, stay as you are, you will eventually come up with many more things to dua for.

4. Finally, end your Dua by saluting the Prophet (saw).

We hope you find this guide useful as it will help you structure your dua more efficiently. We pray that Allah (swt) will accept your duas and grant you what is best for you. Please use this guide on the blessed days of Hijjah so that you can get the maximum benefit from it on those blessed days.

Islamic prayer of invocation, supplication or request

In Islam, duʿāʾ (Arabic: دعاء IPA: [duˈʕæːʔ], plural: ʾadʿiyah أدعية [ʔædˈʕijæ]) is a prayer of invocation, supplication or supplication,[1][2] even asking for help or support from God.

Role in Islam[edit]

Muslims consider this a profound act of worship. Muhammad is reported to have said, “Dua is itself worship.”[3][4]

There is a special emphasis in Muslim spirituality on Du’a, and early Muslims took great care to record the supplications of Muhammad and his family and pass them on to succeeding generations, collected in individual volumes to be memorized and taught. Collections such as Kitab al-Adhkar by al-Nawawi and al-Hisn al-Hasin by Shams al-Din al-Jazari exemplify this literary trend and gained significant circulation among Muslim followers. I am very interested in learning how Muhammad supplicated to God . [citation required]

Du’a literature, however, is not limited to prophetic supplications; Many later Muslim scholars and sages composed their own supplications, often in elaborately rhyming prose, which were recited by their students. [Citation needed] Popular du’as included Muhammad al-Jazuli’s Dala’il al-Khayrat, which at its height was spreading throughout the Muslim world, and Abul Hasan ash-Shadhili’s Hizb al-Bahr, which was also widely spread . [citation needed] Du’a literature reaches its most lyrical form in the munajat, or “whispered intimate prayers” like those of Ibn Ata Allah. Among the Shia schools, the Al-Sahifa records al-Sajjadiyya Du’as attributed to Ali and his grandson Ali ibn Husayn Zayn al-Abidin.

Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah visited to inquire (of his health) a person among the Muslims who had become weak like a chicken. Allah’s Messenger said: Did you ask for anything or plead with Him about it? he said yes I used to utter (these words): Punish me earlier in this world what You will impose on me in the Hereafter. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger said: Hallowed be Allah, you have neither the power nor the patience to take upon yourself (the burden of His punishment). Why didn’t you say: O Allah, give us good in the world and good in the hereafter and save us from the torment of fire. He (the Holy Prophet) made this supplication (for him) and he was fine. Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, Sahih Muslim[5]

Narrated Anas:

Allah’s Apostle said: “None of you should desire death because of some calamity that has befallen him, and if he cannot but desire death, then he should say: ‘O Allah! Let me live while life is better for me, and take my life when death is better for me.’ ” Muhammad al-Bukhari, Sahih al-Bukhari[6]

Types and Categories[ edit ]

Dua is essentially an expression of the submission of faith to God and one’s neediness.[7]

Type I: Du’ā al-mas’alah ( دُعَاءُ الْمَسْأَلَة du’ā’u ‘l-mas’alah) or the ‘du’a of asking’. This type of du’a is asking for the fulfillment of a need or for a harm to be removed from him/her. An example would be when a person asks, “Oh God! Give me good in this world and good in the life to come!” [citation needed]

Type II: Du’ā al-‘ibadah (دُعَاءُ الْعِبَادَة du’ā’u ‘l-‘ibādah) or the ‘Du’a of worship’. This type of du’a includes every single act of worship. Examples would be when a Muslim prays or gives zakat or fasts. [citation required]

salad [edit]

The salat is the obligatory prayer recited five times a day as described in the Qur’an: “And perform regular prayers at the two ends of the day and at nightfall: For the good things remove the bad ones: Be this the word of remembrance to those who remember (their Lord): “[Quran 11:114] Salat is generally read in Arabic; However, Imam Abu Hanifah, after whom the Hanafi school is named, proclaimed that the prayer could be said unconditionally in any language. However, his two disciples who founded the school: Abu Yusuf and Muhammad al-Shaybani, disagreed, believing that prayers could only be performed in languages other than Arabic if the supplicant could not speak Arabic. Some traditions state that Abu Hanifa later agreed with them and changed his decision; however, there was never any evidence of this.[8] The Hanbali theologian Ibn Taymiyah issued a fatwa proclaiming the same thing.[9] Until the 1950s, Ismailis from India and Pakistan performed prayer in the language of the local Jama’at Khana.[10]

Common duas[edit]

A person who recites from إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ‎ (“At the Creation of the Heavens and the Earth”) in Surah Al Imran to the end of the Surah will receive the reward of Salad for the whole night.[11] A person recites Surah Ya Sin early in the morning, then his need for the day will be fulfilled.[12] Abdullah bin Masood narrated that Muhammad declared that the person who recites the last two ayats of Surah Al-Baqara to the end, these two ayats will be enough for him, i.e. God will protect him from all evil and all tricks.[ 13] When you go to sleep, perform wudu, dust the bed three times, lie on your right side, put your right hand under your head or cheeks and recite the following dua three times: Allah, I die and I live”) [14] A person who recites thrice أأعُوذُ بِاللّ attitude السّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِ(Q the last three ayat of Surah Al-Hashr, then God delegates 70,000 ayat to him to the evening, mercifulness (malā) to send to him (malā). dies that day he will die a martyr and if he recites these in the evening then God delegates 70,000 angels to send him mercy until morning and if he dies that night he will die a martyr.[15] A Muslim servants recited «بِ بِاللّ attitude« رَبّاً وَالْإِسْلَامِ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّ نَبِيّyamah. Struction فَمِنْكَ َ َ َكَ فَ فَ افَ وَلْحَمْدُ ا ا الشُّكْرُ (“O god, whatever favour has come to me or to any of thy creatures in the morning, it comes from thee alone, if you don’t have a partner, be praise and thanks”) in the morning he pleased (blessed, glorified) God for his morning blessings, and when he did this in the night, he thanked God for his night graces.[17] When a person writes three ayat of Surah Ar-Rum recites and misses her normal recitation of the day, she is still rewarded for it. This also applies to the night. If a person retires to bed on his side and recites Surah Al-Fatiha and Surah Al-Ikhlas, he is immune to everything but death. Reciting Ayat-ul Kursi will result in the reciter being protected by the angels throughout the night and Satan will not approach him.[18] When a person enters his bed (to sleep), an angel and a shaitan surround him. The Shaitan whispers “your awakening will end in evil” and the angel says “end in good”. Someone sleeps after dhikr, the angels will protect him all night. Engaging in dhikr and then sleeping is encouraged to gain the protection of the angels. A man dreamed of Muhammad several times. Each time he asked Muhammad for advice on how to keep his faith. Muhammad told him to recite the following every day:

In the name of Allah the Compassionate the Merciful O Allah! O Allah! O Allah! The security, the security, the security from the disappearance of faith. O the Eternally Known! O the eternally pleasing one and o the leader of the lost, you alone we worship and from you (only) we seek help. May Allah’s blessings be upon His best creation Muhammad and all his (pure) descendants. Book of 101 Duas (Requests)[19]

Zayn al-‘Abidin’s Dua[edit]

Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-‘Abidin conveyed his understanding of the relationship between man and God through the prayers and supplications he offered to God during his extended nightly vigils at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (Prophet’s Mosque) in Medina. These prayers and supplications were written down and then circulated by his sons and subsequent generations. Among them is the Al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya known as the Psalms of the House of Muhammad.

All praise is due to Allah who treats me with kindness as if I had no sin. Thus is my Lord most praised by me of all, and most worthy of my praise. O Allah! I find the ways of desire to You wide open, And the rivers of hope to You great and flowing, And I count on Your bounty (in times of need) to those who wished You freely accessible, And the gates of prayer to those who are unequal, widely ajar, and I know that for those who question you, you are in the position of answer, and for those who are in despair, you are in an attitude of salvation. An excerpt from the Dua of Abu Hamza al-Thumali by Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-‘Abidin[20]

The requirements[ edit ]

In Islam there are nine prerequisites that must be present for a du’a to be accepted.

sincerity [edit]

Rules were established in Islam to commemorate Allah. All Muslims follow these rules. It is necessary to be pure to remember God in Islam.[21] Every Muslim must pray five times, Allah is remembered through prayers. In Islam, a Muslim prays to God alone.

patience [edit]

In Islam it is said that one reason for rejecting du’a is to be hasty in du’a. The kind of haste that is forbidden in Islam is when a person leaves Du’a thinking that God will not respond to it. In Islam, Muslims are instructed not to give up du’a because they do not see an immediate response.

Purity[ edit ]

In Islam, for a person’s du’a to be accepted by God, it must be for something pure and sane.

Good intentions[edit]

In Islam, it is imperative that a person making du’a have the best of intentions whatever he or she requests. An example would be when someone asks for an increase in wealth, should they intend to use that increase in wealth to spend more on the poor and their relatives.

Attentive heart[ edit ]

A Muslim is instructed to make Du’a with an attentive heart. A Muslim should be aware of what he is saying and should believe in his or her heart that their du’a will be answered by God.

food [edit]

In the Koran it says in Sura Al-Baqara verse 200:

When you have fulfilled your holy rites, praise Allah as you praised your forefathers “before Islam” or even more passionately. Some say: “Our Lord! Grant us “Thy gifts” in this world, but they will have no share in the Hereafter. Koran, Sura 2 (Al-Baqara), Aya 200[22]

Mohammed is said to have said over and over again:

“O people! God is al-Tayyib (pure), and He only accepts what is pure! God commanded the Messengers, for He said: ‘O Messengers! He also said, “O you who believe! Eat of the pure and good food that we have given you.” Then Prophet Hazrat Muhammad mentioned a traveler on a long journey who is disheveled and dusty and stretches out his hands to the sky and says, “O my Lord! O my Lord!” unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he is fed unlawfully; how can it be answered?”[23]

The above hadith describes a man who made his money by cheating other people. His money was unclean, so whatever he bought with his money became unclean. His clothing, drink, and food were all bought with this money, which was considered unclean, so his clothing, drink, and food were all considered unclean. According to the above hadith, in Islam, a person’s du’a is not accepted by God if he earns illicit money.

The hadith also emphasizes that according to Islam, anyone who eats unclean foods such as pork will reject his or her du’a from God.

In Islam, there is no specific time of day to which du’a making is restricted. When something more important than du’a comes up in Islam, that takes precedence. What is more important than du’a is defined by the Quran and Sunnah. Some examples are the call to prayer. In Islam, when the adhan is called, one has to respond to it. Another example is when a person du’a and their parents call them for help, then the response to their parents takes precedence over the du’a. This means that a person must stop making du’a when he or she hears the adhan or the parents calling him or her to respond. In Islam, the rights of parents are great and are strongly emphasized in the Qur’an and Hadith.

Why duas are not answered[edit]

There are various reasons why du’as, supplications and invocations are not accepted.

Authentic or confirmed reasons[ edit ]

impatience [edit]

God rejects supplications when the worshiper is hasty or impatient.

It was asked: “O Messenger of God? … What does it mean to be hasty?” Prophet Muhammad replied: “A worshiper says: ‘I have prayed and prayed and I do not yet see it being accepted; so he gives up hope of being answered and leaves Du’a’.[24]

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (Radiallahu Anhu) that the Messenger of Allah said: “(The Dua) of each of you will be answered as long as he does not hastily seek an answer and does not say: ‘I have prayed but I have not Answer received.’” Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5981; Muslim, 2735[25][26]

“A person’s dua will continue to be answered unless he prays for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.[25]

Change yourself first[edit]

This aspect is explained in the following verse:

Allah does not change the lot of a people unless they change what is in their hearts. Koran, Sura 13 (Ar-Ra’d), Aya 11[27]

Praise God[edit]

A reported hadith relates as follows:

The Messenger of Allah heard someone praying after his prayer without praising Allah and praying for the Prophet without Allah. Regarding him, the Messenger of Allah said: “This man was in a hurry.” Then he called him and said: “If any of you has performed salat (prayer) and wants to pray, he should first praise Allah and then glorify Him at the beginning, and then he should pray to Allah for me. Then he can pray for whatever he likes.””[28]

When the Worshiper Thinks Dua is Unanswered[edit]

Mohammed is said to have said:

“Make du’a to God in a state of certainty that your du’a will be answered, and know that God does not answer a du’a that comes from a neglectful, unobservant heart.” Hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim from Abu Hurairah[26]

If one does not think positively about God, invocations may go unanswered. Mohammed said:

“Allah, exalted be He, says: ‘I am as My servant thinks I am.'” Narrated by al-Bukhari, 7405; Muslim, 4675[25]

Sinful or haram income and food[ edit ]

Muhammad mentioned a person who travels far, whose hair is disheveled and covered with dust.

“He raises his hands and prays, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ but his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothing is unlawful, and his food is unlawful. How, then, can his supplication be accepted?”[ 29]

A similar version in the hadith narrated by Ahmad, Muslim and al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah as mentioned in sahih al-Jami #2744.

“A person’s dua will continue to be answered unless he prays for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.[25]

Asking for something sinful[edit]

Abu Huraira reports that Muhammad said:

“A person’s dua will continue to be answered as long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim[25]

A dua for something that is haram cannot be made and will not be fulfilled. Muslims cannot demand what is forbidden in Islam. Such duas would definitely not be answered.

Severing the ties of kinship[edit]

“A person’s dua will continue to be answered unless he prays for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.[25]

Mohammed said:

“A slave’s supplication will continue to be granted so long as he does not ask for a sinful cause, or for something that would break the bonds of kinship, and he does not become impatient.”[29]

Make dua conditional[edit]

Mohammed said:

“Let none of you say: ‘O Allah, forgive me if you will, oh Allah, have mercy on me if you will.’ Let him be resolute in this matter, knowing that no one can force Allah to do anything.” Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim[25][29]

In Shia Islam[edit]

An Iranian Shia Muslim woman praying and making du’a in Laylat al-Qadr

Prayer or Du’a has an important place in Shia, as described by Muhammad as a weapon of the believer. Du’a is in a sense considered a feature of the Shi’a community. Performing Du’a in Shia has a special ritual. For this reason there are many books written on the conditions of prayer among the Shia. Most of the Ad’ayieh were transmitted from the household of Muhammad and then from many books in which we can observe teachings of Muhammad and his household according to the Shia. Shi’a leaders always invited their followers to recite du’a. For example, Ali, due to his leadership in monotheism, contemplated with the theme of du’a.[30][31] Shia believe that dua is possible in terms of philosophy as well as other religions. Some philosophers like Avicenna but refer to the meaning and possibility but reality of Dua. He says if you have heard that someone has been healed by the mystic or a problem has been solved by Bua, then do not suddenly deny it without thinking, for that can be a wisdom and a mystery. Mystic is certainly someone who has a connection to transphysics. Therefore, none of the Islamic sages denied the affection of Dua.

All in all, we have three attitudes regarding Dua. Among the believers there are three groups on Dua. One group is so radical that they believe that dua plays no role in a believer’s life. The second group believes that at least some of Dua have affection, but many of them do not have affection. The third group has a moderate attitude towards Dua. They believe that dua is a condition and that there are preparations for the fulfillment of dua.[32] According to Mutahhari, dua is both premise and conclusion, both means and end. Mutahhari knows Dua as a disposition and innate desire in man.[33]

Other optional labels[ edit ]

There are various other optional techniques and etiquettes in the Qur’an and Sunnah for du’a. Listed here are some limited and only a fraction of the Du’a labels that scholars have found in relation to the Qur’an and the Sunna.

Raise your hands[edit]

Raising hands is a recommended option. There are many ahaadeeth that describe Muhammad raising his hands during du’a. Some hadiths describe that under dire circumstances he raised his hands at or above his head. Many scholars agree that, except in times of exceptional need, Muhammad did not raise his hands above his head. In all other conditions, it is customary to raise your hands to shoulder level with your palms together.

However, scholars agree that there are two authentic ways of raising the hands: if the palms are not facing the sky in drastic conditions while the backs of the hands are facing the ground, the du’a can be “recited”. One must also make sure to face the qibla (direction of prayer) while making du’a.

The second way that scholars have agreed upon is to show the palms to the face; again one must face the qibla, but this time the back of the hand should also face the qibla.

Evidence of facing the qibla during du’a is found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

Abdullah ibn Zayd narrated:

‘The Prophet left (Madinah) for this prayer, looking for rain. So he made a du’a and asked for rain, then he faced the Qibla and turned his cloak inside out’ Sahih al-Bukhari #6343, Muslim No. 894 and others

Facing the Qibla[edit]

The Qibla is the direction Muslims face while performing salat.

There are also Sahih Hadith narrating that it is forbidden to raise one’s eyes to heaven in prayer.

Abu Huraira reported:

People should avoid raising their eyes to heaven while supplication in prayer, otherwise their eyes may be torn away.[34]

Wipe face[ edit ]

Once the du’a is complete, it is customary for the supplicant to wipe their face with their hands, and this action signals the end of the du’a.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas:

The Prophet said: …

Beseech Allah with your palms; do not pray with your back up. When you have finished praying, wipe your faces with it. Abu Dawud, Sunan Abu Dawud[35]

Narrated by Yazid ibn Sa’id al-Kindi:

When the Prophet (to Allah) made supplications, he raised his hands and wiped his face with his hands. Abu Dawud, Sunan Abu Dawud[36]

Best dua to solve any problem

This is the best dua to recite when a problem arises. This dua was recited by Hazrat Younus alaihi salam in the belly of the fish. Allah accepted his prayer.

Sa’ad ibn Waqas (RadhiAllahu Anhu) narrated that the Prophet SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “The supplication of the Companion of the Fish (Prophet Yunus) was in the belly of the fish: مِنَ الظّالِمِيْنَ

“La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minadh-dhalimin”.

(There is no god but Thee, Thou art far exalted and above all weakness, and indeed I was the culprit)’.

If any Muslim asks with these words, his request will be accepted.”

In another account we read: “I know words that will cause Allah to remove one’s distress. These are the words (of supplication) of my brother Yunus, peace be upon him.”
