Best Grab Adhesive For Skirting? The 57 New Answer

In 45 years in the trade, DIY Doctor has used pretty much every grip glue that has come onto the market besides Gorilla Glue grip glue. We have used Gripfill, Pink Grip, Sticks Like Sh*t, No More Nails, Stixall, No Nonsense and many epoxies. This Heavy Duty Grab Adhesive from Gorilla Glue reigns supreme as an exceptionally strong, versatile adhesive. It’s tough, all-purpose, as you’ll see, and very, very strong.

Who are Gorilla Glue?

Gorilla is an American company that is just over 10 years old and is based in Cincinnati.

Their original glue was used for mending furniture, but it didn’t take long for consumers to realize that Gorilla Glue was one of the most versatile and strongest glues on the market.

DIY Doctor is aware of this and has been using Gorilla Glues and Gorilla Tapes for some time, but was delighted when Gorilla sent us some of their new Heavy Duty Grab Adhesives to try out. As always, we took it with us directly on site.

After speaking to Gorilla and looking at their website, we decided to put their claims to the test. The product page on their adhesive claims the Gorilla Grab Adhesive:

There is only one thing, and that is to use it in all these circumstances.

The first thing to do, however, is to issue a word of warning. As good as Gorilla Grab Adhesive is (and it is very good indeed), the surface you’re sticking things to needs to be a very solid surface.

For example, if you stick something on a plastered wall and the plaster in that wall is loose, then the plaster will fall with whatever you suck on it.

This is not the fault of the adhesive and if you are in doubt about any of the surfaces you wish to apply Gorilla Grab Adhesive to please also use a few screws to ensure everything stays in place.

Prepare Gorilla Grab Adhesive for use

Regular caulk guns will work with Gorilla Grab Adhesive

Gorilla Grab Glue comes in a 290ml tube, ideal for use with a 310ml mastic or caulk gun around the home.

As with any tube glue, sealant or mastic, the end of the tube should be cut off and pushed into the gun.

A tight-fitting nozzle cap is supplied with each tube to prevent air from entering the nozzle after use.

This prevents both the sealant from dripping out and the ingress of air to cure the adhesive. When you use the tube next time, the glue can be as fresh as the first time.

One of the things that immediately struck us about Gorilla Grab Adhesive is the smoothness with which it flows from the tube.

Many of the other adhesives like Pink Grip or Gripfill can be a little clumpy if not heated on a heater first. Another thing is that Gorilla Grab is a gap-filling adhesive, not just a stick-one adhesive.

No wall, in any house, anywhere, is completely flat. Gluing frames, panels, baseboards and picture rails to the wall almost always leaves a gap, no matter how small, between the back of the workpiece and the wall.

This is not a problem with Gorilla, as the gaps can be filled on the go. Not only that, but if you’re not a world-class carpenter and your miter gaps are a little bigger than you’d like, you can fill them in too!

Applying the adhesive in a wavy pattern to the back of the work piece provides greater opacity than applying it in a straight line.

We pressed the (in this case saddle pad and skirting board) against the wall and instead of just applying straight pressure to the piece, we wiggled it side to side a little. Then we let go.

The bezel we used was a piece of 6″ x 1″ wood (150mm x 25mm) so it wasn’t lightweight, but the grip adhesive held it in place without sliding down the wall long enough to put on getting a few security screws in… That’s a good grip by anyone’s standards!

Then we attached a skirting board using the same method and filled in all the gaps between the skirting board and the fascia and the walls. Gorilla Grab scores so well as a putty because it flows just as easily as most decorators do joints and fill gaps well.

Then we took Gorilla Grab Kleber back to its roots in Cincinnati and attached some blinds with it. As you can see, the stretching of the blinds hinges had forced these window blinds to break their nicely mortised joints.

We opened the joints a little wider, wedged the gorilla in, clamped the blinds overnight and by morning it would have taken hopscotch to break the bond we had created.

This is a really good thing and the tighter you can clamp the workpiece pieces together, the better the grip glue will work.

Now you get the idea! This stuff is really versatile. It really didn’t matter what type of surface we applied it to, it stuck quickly. So much so that we ended up putting it through not one, but three ultimate tests.

We’ve used it to patch a 100 year old clay roof tile, a shower screen that spends most of its life underwater and finally we’ve used it to glue battens to a wall to hold a countertop……No screws!

We had plastered the wall ourselves so we knew it was solid and that really is a massive test of any adhesive. It has done brilliantly where, it must be said, many of its competitors have failed miserably.

Doctor’s Opinion on Gorilla Grab Adhesive

To be honest there is nothing else to say. Our side test, the pictures and the video say it all. This is a really strong adhesive that will live up to every single one of your needs and if that weren’t unusual enough in itself, surpass it!

We used it for many more things that we just couldn’t get into the video. Plastic flower pots were put together to form a garden ornament, bricks and blocks were put together just to see if we could.

A saucer was taped back together in a water-filled dishwashing bowl and we got so excited we even taped the door of our Health and Safety Officers’ office just for fun…..Please don’t do this at home!

All in all, suffice it to say that our workshop has now been given a shelf on the sealant shelf especially for Gorilla Grab Adhesive. top marks.

Shopping for adhesives can be a challenge. Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails are some of the most recommended options, but you still want to make sure you’re getting the best glue that best suits your project. So Gorilla Glue vs. Liquid Nails: Which sticks better?

Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive bonds wood better than Liquid Nails HD Construction Adhesive. But a newer variant from Liquid Nails, the Fuze It Max, had better results in a peel strength test that included Gorilla Glue as part of the sample. Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails are somewhat similar in that they each have options in the same category.

These two types of glue have different grades. There are varieties for outdoor construction and others suitable for indoor projects.

In this article, we will learn the difference between Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails. We’ll look at how some similar variants perform under the same circumstances and which one is right for your building or DIY project.

Which surfaces do you glue?

Each of these brands has products for specific purposes. Before deciding on one, you should consider the nature of your project. In construction projects you bond everything from concrete to metals and floors to wood.

Gorilla Glue prides itself on its ability to bond dissimilar materials. That means if you’re looking forward to gluing wood to metal or concrete to concrete, you need Gorilla Glue structural adhesive.

Liquid Nails has construction adhesive that has been specially strengthened to bond two dissimilar objects. The new release Liquid Nails Fuze it Max showed impressive adhesion to wood, wood-to-metal and concrete.

If your project primarily used wood, focus on Gorilla Glue. However, if you want to bond different types of materials – say wood to metal or wood to concrete – Liquid Nails should be on your checklist.

Unlike other construction jobs that need to cure for weeks before you can move on to the next phase, fast drying time is a plus for any brand of adhesive. It would help if you use an adhesive that cures quickly when first applied and takes minimal time to cure well enough for a long-term bond.

Gorilla Glue has a range of products that dry in as little as 5 minutes. Gorilla Epoxy Glue is recommended for interior work that requires higher bond strength. The epoxy is a 2x formula, meaning it combines epoxy resin and hardener. This is one of the strongest combinations you can find in an adhesive.

However, if you compare a polyurethane variant of Gorilla Glue to a similar variant of Liquid Nails, Liquid Nails will cure in less time. Liquid Nails Fuze it Max cures in 15 minutes compared to 30 minutes for Gorilla Glue. It takes you around 24 hours to achieve a firm hold with either adhesive, even on materials like concrete, as this video shows.

For the best result for Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails on a concrete-on-concrete-like surface, bond the surfaces to allow air and moisture to cure the glue. Note that if you can’t get Liquid Nails Fuze It Max, get Liquid Nails LN-700.

The lap shear test measures an adhesive’s ability to withstand stress when a force from above causes one object to detach from the other. Suppose you glued a cinder block to a board. A strong glue would require more force to slide across the board after the glue has set.

It is the load per unit width required to separate two joined materials.

We measure bond strength using two metrics.

Different variations of Liquid Nails will give you different shear test and peel strength results. In a wood to wood shear strength experiment, Liquid Nails HD had a shear strength of 336 lbs. Liquid Nails Fuze It lived up to its promise of 3x the strength, showing 1178 lbs of pure strength.

In a separate experiment pitting Gorilla Glue against Liquid Nails, Gorilla Glue performed better than Liquid Nails HD. Liquid Nails HD could withstand 441 lb while Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive held 846 lb.

Based on these results, we can infer Gorilla Glue bindings better than Liquid Nails Heavy Duty. However, Liquid Nails Fuze performs better than both.

While selecting the strongest adhesive is a personal call, you can always review tests that determine bond strength. This review included Liquid Nails Fuze It, Liquid Nails Extreme Heavy Duty, Liquid Nails Ultra Quik Grip, Liquid Nails Heavy Duty, and Gorilla Glue Heavy Duty. The weight held in the wood-wood bond and the PVC-wood bond was measured.

These were the results:

These results paint a different picture. Three variants of Liquid Nails outperformed Gorilla Glue in wood-to-wood and wood-to-PVC bond strength. Only the Ultra Quik Grip variant recorded a lower score.

Are there better alternatives for PVC-wood bonding?

Most Gorilla Glue variants are not the best option for gluing PVC to wood.

You can use Gorilla Glue as a temporary fix if you don’t intend to put heavy loads on it.

However, if you’re looking for a long-term solution, you can use construction glue and try these two hacks:

Sand down the PVC with fine-grit sandpaper

Increase the surface of the PVC

Sanding down the PVC creates a smoother surface that is almost the same as the wood surface and gives better results. Given the nature and shapes of most PVCs, increasing the surface area could be a difficult task. After all, in most projects, PVC is primarily about pipes.

In such a situation, it is best to purchase a stronger adhesive. Gorilla Glue has a 2 part adhesive that is perfect for gluing PVC to wood.

For interior projects where you are using PVC on wood, Gorilla Glue will outperform Epoxy Liquid Nails. It should be small tasks.

What’s the Strongest Construction Glue: Gorilla Glue or Liquid Nails?

Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails can both be the strongest adhesives depending on the surfaces you will be using them on.

You need the strongest glue you can get, whether you’re working on construction or fixing a few things around the house. Gorilla Glue and Liquid Nails have special types of glue that are suitable for all types of surfaces.

These are the surfaces you can use adhesives on.

Gorilla Glue vs. Liquid Nails: What sticks plastic better?

Gorilla Glue has a range of products that work on plastic. However, they come with a warning. It will not work with polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) plastics. PP plastics are plastics found in food packaging. On the other hand, PE plastics are used in grocery bags and plastic wrap or some trash cans.

Since most variants of Gorilla Glue are made of polyurethane, they will not work with these plastics. If you insist on using Gorilla Glue to attach your plastics, Gorilla Glue Epoxy is a good choice. It is suitable for applications with minimal contact with water.

Liquid Nails has a special product that guarantees excellent results on plastic. It’s waterproof. You can use it to bond plastics that come into close contact with water. LN-207 adhesive is moisture resistant and has quick adhesion.

The Liquid Nails come in a larger pack. Nevertheless, epoxy adhesives outperform polyurethane adhesives in terms of bond strength.

If you are looking for a stronger adhesive for your plastics, Gorilla Glue Epoxy offers better value and superior bond strength.

Gorilla Glue vs. Liquid Nails: Which Glues Tiles Better?

Tiles are primarily laid in areas with heavy foot traffic or high moisture levels. In most cases, the tiles break and need to be repaired. Technically you CAN use glue to attach tiles.

According to this Gorilla Glue guide, you’ll find a range of glues that can fix tiles. However, you would need to use the adhesive in areas with little foot traffic and the tiles will not receive too much external pressure. Suppose a kitchen tile has come loose on the wall. You can use Gorilla Glue to reattach the broken piece.

You’ll have to rely on the support of the piece underneath the broken tile, and you’ll have to hold it in place for up to 24 hours to fully cure. The best options in this scenario would be the Gorilla Glue Epoxy and the Gorilla Glue Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive. The epoxy is waterproof, while the Heavy Duty Structural Adhesive is waterproof and approved for indoor work.

Liquid Nails work on tiles. However, it’s not the product you want to use for a large project. Liquid Nails has a wider range of construction adhesives – all around the alley for interior projects. So a broken tile would be the ideal project. The main disadvantages of using Liquid are:

It is expensive to use on a large scale.

The cured adhesive will tear again in high traffic areas

As it is non-porous it would take too long to cure properly.

If you want to attach some tiles to a kitchen wall or in a room with minimal foot traffic, choose Liquid Nails Fuze It Adhesive. The Fuze It is a current version with improvements. It’s best for outdoor projects and should give you a strong bond if used in tile.

But, given the price, stick to small projects only.

In the tile category, epoxy performs better than construction adhesive. This is how Gorilla Glue Epoxy sticks tiles better than Liquid Nails Fuze it Construction Adhesive.

Gorilla Glue vs. Liquid Nails: Which glues glass better?

Glass valuables tend to break throughout the home. Sometimes it’s a valuable piece that you wouldn’t throw away for a bit of chipping.

Gorilla Glue has super glue and epoxy glue that might work with glass on glass. However, you would need to attach a piece that gets a lot of movement. It would need to be protected from extreme weather changes to reduce the likelihood of cracking.

On the other hand, Liquid Nails recognized its inefficiencies in earlier variations of its adhesives and made Fuze It. Fuze It is also said to work on glass. Although polyurethane adhesives do not submerge well in water, you can apply Liquid Nails Fuze It to areas where the bonded material may come into contact with water.

Does this make Liquid Nails a suitable adhesive for glass? You can use it to install glass on walls or reattach large pieces of broken glass. Best of all, once cured, you can sand or wipe away the excess and paint over the surface to give your glass a new look.

You may get a stronger bond with Gorilla Glue Epoxy, but Liquid Nails Fuze It will bond larger pieces of glass. Liquid Nails bond glass better than Gorilla Glue.

Put an adhesive in your tool bag, whether you’re handling a big construction project or making DIY tops. Choose which adhesive is right for you based on the scope of your project and the expected result.

We recommend you go for Liquid Fuze It for your outdoor projects and have a backup Gorilla Glue for indoor works.

16.3 tons (2013)

At 16.3 tons, the bar for the world record was quite high. Instead of using a structural adhesive, however, they melted the high-performance plastic PEEK and allowed it to cool between the steel cylinders that hold the plastic material. They explained it as the principle of hot melt.

The first world record almost failed, because the attempt to keep a 3.9-ton pickup in the air with all-purpose glue was over after just one minute. The attachment gave way and the pickup truck fell to the ground. But on the second try they succeeded.

Past Records

According to Guinness World Records™, the world record for the heaviest weight lifted with glue (not commercially available) is one of the most broken records.

17.5 tons (2019)

On July 12, 2019, DELO lifted a 3-axle truck into the air. The 220 t mobile crane used for lifting stretched its arm 40 meters up. Additional concrete slabs increased the empty weight of the truck from 13 tons to a total of 17.5 tons. The world record was improved by a factor of 4 in just twelve years.

The glue

The strongest adhesive in the world is called DELO MONOPOX VE403728. This is a modified version of the high temperature resistant DELO MONOPOX HT2860. This epoxy forms a very dense network during heat curing. Among other things, a special filler was used to modify the resin properties to achieve the extreme strength required for the world record. This made it possible to lift a weight of 17.5 tons with just 3 grams of adhesive.

New plaster on a refurbishment project which blends in with the existing plaster so not the flattest surface to attach and realized a little too late that in places the plaster hadn’t dried out as fully as I thought (my mistake). Anyhow, it handled the extra goo thickness needed to fill in the dips and appears to have bonded well, so fingers crossed it stays fine when the plaster dries. Would use again for decorative fixings but preferably on fully dried out surfaces!
