What does adjusting a hop up do?

Adjusting the hop up on an airsoft rifle changes the amount of backspin on the BBs that you shoot out of it. When you have insufficient hop up, your BBs will drop too soon, resulting in a short range for your airsoft rifle.

Hop-up (airsoft)

Adjusting the hop-up on an airsoft gun changes the amount of backspin on the BBs you shoot from it. If you don’t have enough hop-up, your BBs will fall too soon, resulting in short range for your airsoft rifle. On the other hand, if the hop-up is too high, your BBs will curve drastically and you won’t be able to shoot accurately. Try setting your airsoft gun’s jump somewhere in the middle for the best range and accuracy.

What is AEG bucking?

About Airsoft Electric Gun (AEG) Hop Up Buckings and Nubs

In an adjustable hop up unit, an arm is holding the nub in place and the arm pushes the nub to the bucking. This pressure combined with the friction of the rubber of the hop up bucking give the backspin effect.

Hop-up (airsoft)

About Airsoft Electric Gun (AEG) Hop Up Buckings and Nubs

There are two components in a hop-up assembly that interact directly with the BB when it is fired to create the hop-up effect. These components are the hop-up bucking and the pimple. In an adjustable hop-up unit, one arm holds the nub in place and the arm pushes the nub to buck. This pressure combined with the friction of the rubber of the hop-up bucking gives the backspin effect. By default, most hop-up pimples have a simple cylinder shape and are made of rubber or plastic. This provides enough pressure on the bucking while allowing a little flex to not prematurely wear and damage the bucking as it does its job. A good BB should have a shape that allows for accurate shots and allows for a responsive and consistent hop-up. Quality bucking and a clean, quality inner barrel work with quality BBs to give you the best accuracy.

Questions and answers:

What does adjustable hop up mean in airsoft?

High Operation Power Up or “Hop-Up” in short, is the back spinning of an airsoft BB to increase range and accuracy through a phenomenon called Magnus effect. In airsoft the term Hop-Up also usually refers to the device that creates the backs spin off BBs.

Hop-up (airsoft)

Airsoft Hop Up Customization

High Operation Power Up, or “Hop-Up” for short, is turning back an airsoft BB to increase range and accuracy through a phenomenon called the Magnus Effect. In airsoft, the term hop-up also usually refers to the device that creates the backs spin-off BBs. Its primary function is to increase and decrease the pressure applied to one side (top) of your BB when chambered, which creates backspin when fired, creating a vertical force that pulls the BB up and the effective range elevated. Having the right hop-up setting on your airsoft gun will maximize its effectiveness.

Airsoft Hop-Up Adjustment Steps:

You need a large safe open area at least 50 feet away and a torso-sized target. When you’re sure, fire 2-3 shots at your target and see where the BBs fly. If you are BBs, do exactly as shown in Figure A (go down). You have to turn up your hop-up. Look at your gun’s hop-up device and try to find an arrow with the word “Up” on it. Twist it so your BBs go up.

If your BBs go up like in Diagram B, you need to rotate your hop-up down. It should be chosen opposite the arrow that says “up”.

Repeat 3 and 4 while properly aiming at your target and tweak your setup by dialing your hop-up unit as little as possible.

You’ve got it right when your BBs go up very slightly and then maintain their line, then go down slightly almost like a straight line and hit your target. This is the best setting for your hop-up. If your aim is too close, you won’t see the effect of your hop-up and you’ll need to aim at a greater distance.

Note that unlike real firearms, airsoft guns do not have a rifled barrel and therefore cannot achieve pinpoint accuracy with every shot. Other factors such as BB weight and wind can greatly affect the trajectory of your BB.

What is a gel Blaster hop up?

A hop-up applies backspin to the ball, as it is coming out of the barrel. Essentially, instead of the gel travelling a certain distance and then falling to the ground in an arc shaped trajectory, the backspin enables the pellet to fly further on a straighter flight patch.

Hop-up (airsoft)

It’s rare to go to a game day and not see people tinkering with their hop-ups at the end of their guns between rounds. Hop-ups come in many shapes and materials. Ask any player what their favorite brand is, and they’ll give you a variety of names/manufacturers and places to shop from.

However, if you don’t know what a hop-up is – or – what it does, you might be spending your hard-earned coin on a product that might not be suitable or work with your kind of gel blaster.

So first up – what is a hop-up and what does it do? A hop-up imparts backspin to the ball when it comes off course. Instead of the gel traveling a certain distance and then falling to the ground in an arcuate trajectory, backspin essentially allows the pellet to continue flying in a straight flight path. This happens due to the influence of three factors:

The Magnus effect occurs when air moves transversely (transverse) to the axis of rotation over a rotating spherical or cylindrical object. One side counteracts airflow, which “slows down” airflow and causes higher pressure air buildup. Since the other side of the ball is spinning in the same direction as the air, and neither has any effect, skin resistance will accelerate it and relieve pressure. Which leads us to…

Bernoulli’s principle. Part of this principle states that restrictions cause things to flow faster and faster fluids have lower pressures. (A good example of this is placing your finger over the end of the hose. The water pressure increases due to the restriction, causing the flowing water to pass the restriction more quickly.)

Finally, the Coanda effect, which is the tendency of a liquid to be attracted to a nearby surface and thereby follow a curved surface. This is important because the gel bead is spherical.

The tongue in a gel ball hop up acts as the bucking found in airsoft hop ups. Here’s a good example of how it works:

The combination of the “narrowing” of the cylinder combined with the changing pressure creates a pressure differential across the spherical pellet which in turn exerts a force on it.

How do you use this to your advantage? Adjusting your hop-up for peak performance takes patience and a bit of precision. It’s certainly not something you’ll want to customize on the fly if you can avoid it, and especially if it’s your first time trying to set it.

We recommend playing around with the hops at home to get an idea of what your weapon is capable of and finding the sweet spot for a low, flat trajectory, as that’s your goal.

Adjustments to your hop-up can produce three different outcomes: too much, too little, just right. Here’s what to expect from the three and how to identify them.

Too Much Hop – The purpose of backspin is to counteract gravity, but too much backspin will cause your gel to travel in a relatively straight path and then fly up when the backspin takes effect. This results in a strange, almost vertical trajectory.

Not Enough Bounce – As you start applying backspin, you should notice your gel range increasing and moving along a suspended trajectory. If you don’t apply backspin, the path that the gel moves is just a short arc, starting on the barrel and slowly down to the ground.

Spot on – It’s worth testing both the too much and too little end of the spectrum to get a feel for how your blaster will fire with each one, so you’ll know what to look for when you’re hitting the sweet spot have found. When testing adding maximum backspin, pay attention to when the gel starts to move up. This should be the point where the backspin effect kicks in and keeps the gel in the air. A flat trajectory that gently lifts to a floating trajectory is the end goal and will provide the best results for range and accuracy.

There are almost no situations where a hop-up would be a disadvantage, more range and accuracy is a dream come true for most players, but achieving it is not easy and requires some finesse.

With a basic understanding of the forces and physics involved, and a little experience, you’ll find it easy to tune your hop-ups for maximum performance!

See you on the field!

What does Hopup mean in airsoft?

If you’ve been airsofting before, you’ve probably heard of a “hop-up”. The hop-up is a small, adjustable part of the airsoft gun which dramatically increases an airsoft gun’s range.

Hop-up (airsoft)

If you’ve done airsoft before, you’ve probably heard of a “hop-up.” The hop-up is a small, adjustable part of the airsoft gun that dramatically increases the range of an airsoft gun.

How does a hop-up improve range?

When the BB is fired with a blast of compressed air from the airsoft gun, a small and grippy rubber pad rubs against the top of the BB. This has the effect of adding backspin to the BB.

Imagine kicking a soccer ball that someone’s foot is firmly on, this would induce a backspin and is the same principle.

The ball’s backspin as it flies through the air gives it its increased range by providing additional lift.

How does spin add lift?

This is where it gets a little more technical. It’s not enough for us to know that the “spin” moves the ball, we need to know how it happens and why.

The cause is the so-called Magnus effect. The Magnus Effect causes a spinning sphere to appear to defy physics. It may seem complicated, but it’s actually a simple and understandable physical phenomenon.

That’s how it works.

Liquids and gases have “friction”. This is exactly why water sticks to a vertical surface. The air surrounding the BB exhibits a similar effect, wanting to “cling” to the BB as it travels along its surface.

When the BB is fired with no spin (i.e. the hop-up is off), the air “sticks” evenly across the entire BB surface. The BB is propelled forward by the gun and pulled down by gravity. The air that passes the BB just slides behind it and fills the gap it leaves.

When you apply backspin you induce a phenomenon known as Magnus affect. The spin creates a difference in surface speed between the top and bottom of the BB. The top of the BB rotates with the air so there is less friction and more airspeed. The bottom of the BB rotates against the air, so there is more friction and less airspeed.

That means the air from the top of the BB is moving faster, with more energy, thus filling the low pressure area behind the BB faster than the air below.

Every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction.

Throwing air down throws the BB up.

This is how lift is generated.

how do you control it

Because spin is transferred to the BB through a friction pad (called a hop-up rubber), you can control the amount of spin (and therefore the amount of lift) by increasing or decreasing the amount of friction you transfer. It does this by changing the amount the hop-up rubber protrudes into the barrel.

This can also be improved by swapping out your hop-up rubber for one made of a grippier material. Firing a BB at very high fps or with a very heavy BB can cause it to slip past the hop-up rubber without gaining much spin. So this can be beneficial when you can’t lift those heavier BBs.

Ultimate Guide to Airsoft Hop-Ups [Illustrated]

How does it work?

Hop Up is an essential part in any airsoft replica. This is because BBs are very light and as they travel they quickly lose a lot of speed after leaving the barrel. To improve the range of your replica, when hop-up bucking, nudge the top of the BB to create backspin that behaves like a glider. Essentially, it “bounces” the pellet. It’s all about aerodynamics! Too much backspin and the BB will fly up. Not enough, it will fall.

The rubber is at the beginning of the barrel, which has special cutouts for bucking and pimples. This allows the bouncy arm to push the nub down onto the bucking and into the inner barrel and connect to the BB.

Different platforms have different ways of accessing the hop-up; To access the hop-up adjustment on most AEGs, you must pull back on the charging handle to open the dust cover and reveal the hop-up adjustment dial. This is a standard hop-up adjustment location for all M4 and M16 airsoft replicas.

How do you set up your hop-up?

There are many types of hop ups based on the type and interior of the replica. There are various designs that have been invented to provide different levels of customization or ease of assembly. For example, most budget-friendly AEGs have a standard hop-up system that allows the player to adjust the amount of hop pressed on BB using a wheel behind the screw in the dust cover.

However, there is a better and more precise rotary version of the hop-up system that allows for more precise tuning. The dial has a larger diameter, which means it takes more turns to make a significant difference, allowing for much better precision.

If you’re wondering how to set up the replica to have its optimal range, there’s only one way to do it. You need to find an open and most importantly safe place to test your weapon. Ideally you can do this before the game on the airsoft pitch. I’d recommend firing a good ten to twenty shots to warm up the hop gum (yes, that’s one thing!). The ideal path for BB should be straight with a tiny upward curve. A perfectly set BB will fall off after bouncing in the last 10 yards.

Hop-Up Rubber/Bucking and Nub

Most players know that the hop-up rubber and pimple setup is much more important when it comes to improving accuracy and distance. For quick clarification:

Hop-up Rubber – This is a rubber bucket that is deployed at the end of the run. It serves 3 purposes:

Holds the hop up unit together with the barrel.

Provides jump onto the BB by contacting it through the bulge inside.

Creates an air seal due to the lips leaning against the air nozzle.

There are softer and harder versions that vary in durability and some performance. Softer usually means better grip, but won’t last as long. Also, cheap quality buckings freeze in cold weather and provide less friction.

Hop-up nub is what pushes on the bucking to allow for backspin. This part is also very important as it allows for compression when a bb is going through. If it were made of plastic or some other hard surface the BBS wouldn’t be able to get through as easily and it would wear down the bucking quickly. Many people modify the original pimples to have a specific shape or more surface area to better hop the pellet, which we will cover in the flat hop section. In general, most pimples come in bucked packaging – check this when purchasing.

Degrees of Hop Up

There are variations of Hop Up in their thickness and softness of rubber material. This is very similar to car tire compounds. You can decide if you want a softer bounce that has better traction and more impact on the BBs, or if you want a harder and more reliable version with longer durability.

Low degrees are soft, they move 50-60 degrees

Medium is about 65-70/75 degrees.

And hard are 75-80 degrees and higher.

Another aspect to look at is the temperature response of the hop-up buckings. Thickness makes a difference, mainly whether or not the bucking will partially freeze in cold weather. However, softer buckings heat up faster during play from friction with fired BBS; partly because some companies use compound-specific material to perform better in cold weather. With these, you don’t have to dial lower judder just to counteract weather issues.

When purchasing any of the above products, check the description of the product to see what types of replicas they are compatible with. In general, there are two types of inner barrel cuts, categorized into “AEG” and “Sniper & PᎥstol”. So just make sure you don’t buy a sniper bucking for an M4.

Advanced – Hop Types

Airsofters have taken it upon themselves to modify the way Hop-Up nudges the BB. There are several types of hop-up modifications that give better results when installation is costly through trial and error. Make sure you have enough free time when setting up an R-HOP and be patient, there is no hurry.

There are many instructional videos that walk you through the process of modifying a hop, although the results of these mods are based on the crafter’s skill. After all, a variety of new hops are constantly being invented, but we will focus on the most effective ones and list only the others.

Flat Hop – This mod is easy to edit but doesn’t offer much difference compared to the standard hop. It focuses on creating more flat space on top of the BB, allowing for less wobble and more bouncing contact when the BB shoots through.

Here are our recommended flat pimples:

R Hop – This particular mod is difficult, but if done correctly, it offers much more consistent, accurate, and longer shots. Rather than pressing the BB flat on top, the patch of rubber under the bucking provides a “pad” around the BB top, allowing for a much more precise bounce and accuracy.

Regarding the nub, we recommend using a flat nub or preferably a concave(s) nub/patch like:

Maple Leaf Omega Nub – (See Price On Amazon)

In general, the effectiveness of R Hop depends heavily on one’s skill and patience. Many airsofters can attest that you never get the R-hop right the first time; However, it’s worth trying or paying for a trusted technician to do it for you.

Alternatively, you can snag a ready-tuned kit on Ebay with all the necessary parts for an R-Hop installation:

R-Hop Ready Set – (See price on Ebay)

Custom Hops – As mentioned earlier, there are many more custom hop up modifications such as: ER Hop, G Hop or Shop. When looking for alternative configurations to the ones we tested ourselves, I found a new hop mod every time I clicked a new link. In general, however, all of these had mixed reviews, so we recommend starting your hop-up mod journey with either Flat Hop or R Hop; then, if necessary, experiment with others. The majority of players will confirm sticking with R Hop as it offers the best contact with the BB and gives the best results.

last words

So there it is! Now you have the basic knowledge of the essential part of each airsoft gun and the variety of its configurations. In terms of replica accuracy and range, this is by far the most important component – it is responsible for the two factors that ensure your replica performs well at various airsoft locations! Remember that buckings, just like any other rubber, will wear down with heavy use. If your replica shoots astray, be sure to check the condition of the hop-up unit and its internals before delving into the gearing.

Hop-up (airsoft)

Soft airgun projectile rotation via “hop-up” mechanism

Hop-up[1] is the backspin applied to airsoft bullets and BBs to increase their range through the Magnus effect.

Hop-up devices apply backspin to the projectile, reducing the air pressure on its top. This causes the plastic pellet to fall less over a given distance than without the spin applied, extending the weapon’s effective range without increasing velocity.

On airsoft guns, this is usually implemented as a ledge (referred to as bucking) in the projectile’s path on the top of the barrel. The bucking temporarily impedes the top of the projectile, giving it backspin that can exceed 1,000 rpm. This is usually adjustable, allowing the effect to be tailored to suit the weight or speed of the projectile and each player’s preference.

The main cause of the lift is the Magnus Effect. On its surface is a layer of non-moving air (the boundary layer). With a spinning ball, this layer is thrown off at an angle. Newton’s Laws state that in order for air to be propelled in one direction, the ball must be moving in the opposite direction. According to the Magnus explanation, the rotating ball would throw air down and backwards, giving lift. The boundary layers on the top and bottom separate unevenly, creating a wake that lies lower than the center of the sphere and appears like a downward comet tail. This can be verified in wind tunnels and is well documented in fluid dynamics textbooks.
