You can do a lot more than filling up your car at a gas station. You can inflate a low tire, drive it through the automatic car wash and vacuum it out. You can even wash your car’s windshield with this liquid-soaked wiper – for free! But is it a good idea to use a free gas station wiper to wash the windows, or could that damage the car?

The reason gas stations have a squeegee on every pump

In the early 20th century, when you couldn’t legally pump your own gas, an attendant would come to your car and pump the gas for you. They would also check the car to make sure it was fine to drive – the fluids were filled, the battery was sufficiently charged and the tires inflated. They also had a wiper at their side to clean the windshield, which was important at the time because the many dirt roads were dusty. Also, earlier cars didn’t have washer fluid dispensers.

Once people were allowed to fuel themselves, those extra maintenance checks stopped too. The duties of the attendant were now in the hands of the customer – and that included cleaning the windows. Therefore, the self-service stations left a handy cleaning tool next to the pump for customers to use: the wiper. To date, almost all gas stations have this device.

Is It Safe to Use a Community Mop to Rinse Dirt?

The blue solution in the container is an alcohol-based glass cleaner, probably diluted with a little water. After several people have wiped bugs, mud, oil, and gas off their vehicle with the wiper and dunked it back in the tub, that liquid is more dirt than cleaning fluid.

When the tank is almost empty, a gas station attendant (sometimes) pours more cleaner into the trough, which mixes with the dirt that has accumulated on the bottom. These pools are essentially never washed out, so any dirt that falls in – bits of gravel, tiny twigs, metal particles – stays there until it attaches to the sponge of the cleaning wand.

That means wiping a baton soaked in dirt and tiny abrasives across your car can cause lots of micro-scratches that crack into the glass – and the clear coat if you use it on the rest of the body. Also, all the dirt dries, leaving streaks that can make the surface dirtier than before.

If you need to wash the windows or wing mirrors while driving to see something, a better alternative is to spend a few dollars and buy a car-safe window cleaner from the grocery store. If you absolutely don’t want to spend any money, take some paper towels from the toilet and soak them in water from the tap. It’s much better for your car than using that caustic wiper.
