Slips on stone floors injure countless people every year, but choosing a better floor isn’t easy. In the most comprehensive study of its kind, the researchers therefore wanted to find out which floor coverings are the most slippery. The team tested 81 types of commercial paving stones – from 13 different rock families – and seven different surface finishes (hammered, flamed, brushed, sawn, honed, polished and sandblasted) in both wet and dry conditions. The results showed, unsurprisingly, that rocks are more slippery when wet. However, unlike previous studies, the researchers found that smoothness was not always determined by the roughness of the stone’s surface. Instead, the composition of the stone plays an important role, the team reports this month in the Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. The more quartz in the stone, the less slippery it was. For example, bottom rocks from Micha Shale, which have some of the highest quartz grades the team has tested, were also among the least slippery in general. But there were a few exceptions. For example, travertine — a form of limestone deposited by hot springs — has a low quartz content but makes up for it with its high porosity, which can add roughness to more uniform surfaces. A similar effect can be observed with sandstone. In contrast, granite has a high quartz content but is very slippery when wet because the other minerals that normally make up the rock are easily eroded during the grinding process. The composition of the stone is most important when it comes to so-called polished surfaces, popular for their appearance and resistance to wear, and on the cusp between being too slippery (as with the smoother polished surface) and always safe (such as the rougher ones sawn and sandblasted surfaces) when wet. To be safe, the team says that quartz-rich stones other than granite are generally good choices, but double-check that certain stone-finish pairings work well together.

While the natural aspect of granite countertops can be great for an earthy element, it also means homeowners need to keep maintenance in mind. Granite countertops are strong and durable as long as they are sealed year after year.

If homeowners are careless in their maintenance, the porous granite can soak up oils, sap and wine that are impossible to remove. Bacteria can also take root in granite if it is not properly sealed. The more Americans use their kitchens, the greater the likelihood that accidents will happen. And many homeowners prefer not to be bothered with maintenance, reports Realtor.com.

“Maintenance-free finishes are one of the top customer requests for kitchen and bathroom remodels,” Young Huh, a New York City-based interior designer, told Realtor.com. “You want a surface that captures the drama of natural stone without constant sealing and maintenance.”

And although a heavy pot or pan is strong, granite can crack and chip because every slab has its flaws and imperfections. Sealed granite will never be as strong as its more popular counterpart, quartz.

The well-known properties of granite make the material easy to recognize. In addition, the stone has been the choice for years and offers a long service life, which means that granite countertops are very common. If a homeowner wants to have an outstanding kitchen, this common material may not be the way to go.

When it comes to kitchen design for 2021 and beyond, more and more homeowners and designers are opting for “lighter” colors. The NKBA’s 2021 Design Trends Report found that 58% of designers are using lighter finishes for kitchen worktops and backsplashes. Granite’s organic nature gives it thick, dense dark veins that make a statement of their own and work well for dark countertops, but lighter hues will exhibit granite’s darker speckles.

“I’m not a big fan of granite countertops as they have a bit too much visual movement for me, and I think they can overpower a kitchen,” Amy Sklar, an LA-based interior designer, told Real Simple. “Quartz stone tends to have more regular and delicate patterns throughout, which I think look cleaner and accentuate the lines of the kitchen.”

Many homeowners are now choosing different materials for countertops for their kitchen islands as well, but granite countertops also find no place here. Houzz’s 2021 Kitchen Trends survey found that most homeowners are choosing either block or wood panel island countertops.
