What does it mean when someone gives you their letterman jacket?
A letter jacket is a baseball-styled jacket traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United States to represent school and team pride as well as to display personal awards earned in athletics, academics or activities.
Black Letterman Jacket With White Detailing
In sports or activities in the United States, a letterman is a high school or college student who has achieved a specified level of participation or achievement on a varsity team.
Overview [ edit ]
Traditional print with embroidered mascot
The term comes from the practice of bestowing on each of these participants a “letter” of cloth, usually the school’s initial or initials, for display on a “letter sweater” or “letter jacket” used for the display of such an award are provided. In some cases, the sweater or jacket itself may also be awarded, particularly for the initial award to a specific individual. To distinguish “Lettermen” from other team participants, schools today often set a minimum attendance level for a team’s events or a minimum level of achievement for a letter to be awarded. A common threshold in American football and basketball is attendance at a set level, often half, of all quarters in a season. For individual sports such as tennis and golf, the caption threshold is typically attendance at half or sometimes two-thirds of all games played. Often, other members of the team who do not meet the requirements for a letter receive a certificate of attendance or other award that is considered of lesser value than a letter.
Some schools continue to base the awarding of letters on performance, in team sports that require a specified number of touchdowns, catches, points, steals, baskets, or tackles, depending on the position and sport. In individual sports, letters are often determined according to qualification for state championships or tournaments. Other schools award letters on a more subjective basis, with the head coach, usually with input from other coaches and sometimes team leaders from students who have already written letters, and award letters for significant improvements as well as significant achievements on or off the field. Character, commitment and teamwork are much more important than simply playing enough or meeting another time or performance requirement. Sometimes academic performance can also be an element of the lesson in grammar schools. This philosophy focuses more on developing and rewarding a well-rounded and well-balanced player, while other methods focus solely on athletic performance and field wins. This term is not gender specific; A qualified competitor in women’s basketball or other women’s sports is properly referred to as a letterman, as is a qualified female competitor on a co-educational sports team. An athlete who is awarded a letter (or letters in multiple sports) is said to have “written” when receiving his letter.
In recent years, some schools have expanded the concept of the letterman beyond sports, providing letters for performing arts performances, academics, or other school activities.

A letter jacket is a baseball-style jacket traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United States to represent school and team pride, as well as to display personal distinctions, in athletics, in college or acquired from activities. Brief jackets are also known as “letterman jackets”, “varsity jackets” and “baseball jackets” in reference to their American origins.
Appearance and style[edit]
The body (i.e. torso) is usually made of boiled wool and the sleeves of leather with ties at the wrists and waistband. Letter jackets are usually made in the school colours, with the body of the jacket being the school’s primary color and the sleeves being the secondary colour, although sometimes the colors of the jacket can be customized to some extent by the student. There could be instances where a student could change the color enough that it doesn’t differ too much from the school colors. They usually have a banded collar for men, or a buttoned-top hood (which unbuttons into a flared collar) for women.
Decorations[ edit ]
The Letter Jacket derives its name from the varsity letter chenille patch on the left chest, which is almost always the first letter or initials of the high school or college the jacket is from. The letter itself can also be customized to reflect the sport or activity in question (e.g. cross-country skiing – a symbol or character in the middle of the letter).
The owner’s name usually appears either in chenille (to match the letter) or embroidered on the jacket itself. The owner’s senior year usually appears in matching chenille. Placement of name and year of graduation depends on school traditions. The year is usually sewn on the right sleeve or just above the right pocket. The school logo and symbols representing the student’s activities can also be ironed onto the jacket.
Lettermen who play on a championship team often receive a large patch commemorating their championship worn on the back of the jacket.
Lettermen who compete in a sport that awards medals often sew the medals onto their jackets to indicate their achievements.
history [edit]
Varsity jackets trace their roots to lettered sweaters first introduced by the Harvard University baseball team in 1865.[1] The letter was usually fairly large and centered (if the sweater was a sweater); Stripes on one sleeve indicated the number of letters won, with a star indicating a team captain.
Traditions[ edit ]
Letter jackets are almost never bought before a student has earned a letter. In schools that only award varsity letters, this is usually the practice in a student’s junior or senior year. Recently, many student-athletes have received letters during their sophomore and sometimes freshman years, resulting in a jacket being needed much sooner. Despite this, the actual jacket is usually not bought until the second year. In schools where junior varsity letters are issued, the jacket may be purchased by junior varsity letter recipients, although the letter will be placed just above the left pocket, leaving room for a future varsity letter.
Some schools may provide letter jackets to mail carriers at an awards ceremony, but more often the school only provides the letter. Some schools will run fundraisers or other programs to provide jackets for students who cannot afford them.
Although this is usually the case, the removal of the letter from the envelope after completion is not recorded as a protocol. Many graduates keep the letter on their jackets after graduation as a symbol of achievement and school pride and commitment, particularly among college writers.

Whats the difference between a letterman jacket and a varsity jacket?
In simple terms, a jacket becomes a letterman jacket when it is worn by a high school senior and it also becomes a varsity jacket when worn by a college-level athlete.
Black Letterman Jacket With White Detailing
Or is it the Letterman jacket? Or maybe the baseball jacket? Wait, don’t these all look the same?
Exactly. Because of the common look of these jackets, most people (even in the fashion industry) use these terms interchangeably.
Here is a small chart to illustrate the differences and similarities between varsity jackets, letterman jackets and baseball jackets.
Basic Varsity Jackets Letterman Jackets Baseball Jackets Originally Worn by College Athletic Teams High School Seniors Baseball Players Sleeves Leather Sleeves Leather Sleeves Cotton Sleeves Collar Ribbed Collar Ribbed Collar Spread Collar Length Regular Regular Shortened Graphic Team Name on Back Alphabet on Front Team Name on Back
Note: There is a small caveat here. The jackets that are actually worn to play baseball don’t have spread collars, but baseball jackets that are made for fashion and styling purposes do. So don’t come at me with pitchforks.
In this article, I will go over these key differences between the three types of jackets and recommend which ones to choose based on your unique use case.
Are letterman jackets and varsity jackets the same thing?
While letterman jackets and varsity jackets may differ in their prints, their structure and silhouette are essentially the same.
Okay, I know there is a lot of confusion in the fashion world on this subject, so let me explain better.
Simply put, a jacket becomes a letterman jacket when worn by a high school senior and a collegiate jacket when worn by a collegiate athlete.
But the jacket design is the same in both cases, albeit with different prints (one has a letter on the front, one has the name of a sports club on the back).
Even if you are buying a varsity jacket for fashion purposes rather than obtaining it from your school or university, there is practically no difference between a varsity jacket and a letterman jacket.
Some stores will use one name while others will use a different nickname.
What is a baseball jacket?
A baseball jacket is a short jacket with a spread or ribbed collar that also has a button closure.
There are two other categories of baseball jackets:
Real Sports Jackets – These are meant to be worn on the pitch. They usually have ribbed collars. Fashion Jackets – These are lifestyle jackets that are not meant to be worn for sports. They tend to have spread collars.
Baseball jackets are often referred to as the younger cousins of varsity jackets because of the similarity between the two.
These jackets are typically worn in casual situations and are often paired with jeans and cargo pants.
As of 2021, they’ve enjoyed a resurgence in popularity as big stars and influencers rock them.
What are baseball jackets made of?
While most baseball jackets are made entirely of wool, some are made from a combination of wool and leather.
In a combination, the sleeve area is usually leather and the body is lambswool or merino wool.
However, for most jackets, there is no distinction made between the material of the sleeves and the material of the body, as both are made from some type of high-quality wool.
Which one should you get?
If you’re buying a jacket for fashion purposes, I recommend choosing a baseball jacket over a letterman or varsity jacket.
There are two main reasons for this.
First, baseball jackets are much less mainstream than varsity jackets, which means wearing them will make you stand out a lot more, especially in the current fashion trend of aesthetic style that everyone and their mother wear varsity jacket.
The second reason is the spread collar of a baseball jacket.
In my experience, Unis’ ribbed collars make layering very difficult, especially if you’re venturing out of streetwear with your outfit.
The spread collar eliminates this problem and makes layering much easier. A buttoned shirt might look weird under a varsity jacket, but the same shirt will look great under a baseball jacket.
Closing remarks
In this article, I’ve tried to clear up any confusion regarding college jackets, letterman jackets, and baseball jackets.
The fact is, all three are currently enjoying major resurgences due to the rise of aesthetic fashion for men. So hop on and stock up on a Pinterest-worthy outfit.
Here is a brief synopsis of the article.
Varsity jackets and letterman jackets are structurally the same. The only major difference is that one is worn by college athletes and one by high school seniors.
Baseball jackets, on the other hand, are very different from the two due to their signature spread collar and cropped length.
Can you put your own patches on your letterman jacket?
There are many different methods of securing your patches to your letterman jacket. The best way is the traditional needle and thread, but there are no-sew options such as specialty fabric glue.

Knowing the right places to put the different types of patches will help your letterman jacket show off your achievements and academic passions in style. Even if you earn more, there will be a designated spot for it, and you’ll finish with a neatly arranged letterman jacket.

THE PROUD HISTORY OF LETTERMAN JACKETS
Letterman jackets have become a cultural symbol, embraced by celebrities, to professional athletes, to everyday students who wear their school’s letters as a badge of honor.
It’s the ultimate in American clothing, with a history spanning decades and countless memories across generations associated with the letterman jackets for high school or college. But while it’s ingrained in our culture, how did the Letterman jacket gain such popularity?
To trace its origins we would have to go back to the mid-19th century in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1865, members of the Harvard University athletic team wore the first version of the Letterman jacket, donned the now-iconic “H” patches on their sweaters, and started a trend that’s still going strong nearly two centuries later.
The college letterman jackets worn by Harvard athletic teams became a point of pride, as only the best athletes could keep and wear theirs after the season and most others had to return theirs. So it’s not surprising that the exclusivity of Letterman jackets made them highly sought after, which helped them grow in popularity over the years.
However, the modern take on men’s and women’s letter jackets was not designed until the first half of the 20th century, when more and more schools adopted the design with their own initials and colors.
After all, the college letterman jacket has become a huge part of pop culture over the last few decades, with celebrities sporting it and the public following soon after.
THE MOST VERSATILE LETTERMAN JACKET
While the rich history and popularity alone are good reasons to wear letterman jackets, it’s important to note that a large part of their popularity is due to how practical these jackets are.
Made from premium materials, they’re incredibly comfortable while protecting against the elements. The design is versatile and blends seamlessly into countless styles and looks across all ages. The universal design of the Letterman jacket options for boys and girls at Jostens means you can create custom items to suit your needs and the school you’re celebrating.
A keepsake that will last a lifetime
A Letterman jacket makes a great keepsake for someone you care about. If you have a loved one or friend who is graduating high school or college, giving them a letterman jacket featuring the school colors and mascot that they will cherish forever can be a memorable gift.

Why are they called letterman jackets?
Letterman jackets derive their name from the “letter” patch sewn on the chest of the jacket (usually on the left side). The letters are initials denoting the varsity team to which the wearer belongs.

Varsity jackets are so cool that they have become essential for men, especially for a casual look. It’s now perfectly acceptable to wear a varsity jacket outside of college. However, if you decide to go for a letterman, make sure that particular “letter” or initials don’t represent anything that you don’t associate with.
Are Letterman jackets warm or cool?
Initially, Letterman jackets were made from boiled wool, so they were warm. Cotton is the most commonly used fabric these days, so it’s a breathable option for the warmer seasons. But leather elements such as the sleeves also cut a fine figure in winter. In short, the material decides whether the jacket is warm or cool.

A varsity letter (or monogram) is an award given in the United States for excellence in school activity. A varsity letter means its winner was a qualified varsity team member, awarded after meeting a certain standard.
Description[edit]
University letter, awarded in the arts (lyre) and science (lamp)
The award letter is usually created in the colors and initials that represent the school the recipient attends. The letter patch is mainly made of chenille and felt materials. Standard sizes range from 4 inches (102mm) to 8 inches (203mm). While 4 inches (102 mm) and 5 inches (127 mm) usually denote junior varsity successes, 6 inches (152 mm) to 8 inches (203 mm) would denote full (senior) varsity. The type of stitching used to create the chenille look is called a moss stitch, while the border stitching is called a chain stitch.
history [edit]
With the advent of organized sport, there was a need for uniforms. There was an additional need for markings, which was satisfied through the use of emblems or letters.
In 1865, the Harvard baseball team added an Old English “H.” The “H” was embroidered on the gray flannel shirt. The football team began using the “H” in 1875. For 25 years following the introduction of the letter in 1865, it was customary for the team captain to allow certain players attending the most important games (Yale or Princeton) to keep the ‘H’ jerseys as a distinction. If a player did not play in an important game, the player had to return the shirt at the end of the season. The awarding of the “H” jersey may have been the birth of the university letter as a distinction. First used regularly by the “Nine” (baseball) of 1891, the Letterman sweater was black with a small crimson “H” on the left chest.
It is not known when the letter sweater came to high schools. The earliest known example of an alphabet jumper in a high school is in the 1911 yearbook of Phoenix Union High School, Arizona Territory. Neck sweater with the letter “P” on the left side.
The sweater appears to be the home of the award letter from the 1890s through the 1930s. Another accolade in the 1920s and 1930s was a stadium-style ceiling presented as an award. In the 1930s, the letter price first appeared on jackets with leather sleeves and wool bodies. The jackets of the 1930s differed in design from today’s modern jackets.[1]
Variations and application[edit]
As a decorative item of clothing, the varsity letter has a multitude of variations and no school is given a fixed standard as to what it should look like.
Chenille letters come in many different shapes and forms. Some institutions use Old English or script style, two or three letter monogram, 3D shading, chenille border, or the traditional straight block style. Students usually only receive one actual letter, but can win the award several times. These additional designations are indicated by the addition of embroidered sports insignia, sculpted metal insert pins or bars attached to the letter. Some schools may embroider non-sporting letters with their award title, e.g. B. “Academics” or “Arts”.
Two-letter monogram with embroidered academic inlay
Three letter monogram
Letter with chenille border, embroidered mascot and sporty inserts
Letter with 3D shading
Traditional print with embroidered mascot
The chenille letter is traditionally placed on the left chest of the varsity jacket, which is also sometimes adorned with championship chenille patches showcasing the team or individual accomplishments. School mascot patches are also commonly used.
During the 1980s and again in the 2010s, varsity jackets were adopted into hip-hop fashion, with companies like Avirex, Phat Farm, and Rocawear making their own variations.[2]

What does it mean when a guy gives a girl his jacket?
Cue #5: If you’re cold, he’ll lend you his jacket. Not only does this show his willingness to make you comfortable, it also sends signals to other guys that you’re off limits. Lending you a jacket also means that he has to stay and reclaim the jacket when you leave, giving him a reason to stay close.

Each person has different likes and dislikes, so it can be difficult to figure out if your date feels a vibe between you. Some guys show interest more readily than others, and you may be left wondering how the date really went. His body language can communicate his interest without him realizing it, so use these clues to decipher your date.
Clue #1: He will focus his entire torso on the woman he is interested in. Another related position is that he points his feet at you. It’s possible that he’ll mimic your actions, like crossing his legs or leaning to one side, which also shows interest.

Hint #2: The guy will make constant eye contact for more than 5 seconds, moving his eyes back and forth from you to what’s in front of him. If you notice him staring at you, then looking away and looking back, then he’s interested.
Hint #3: He offers you physical support, e.g. B. a hand when climbing stairs or getting out of the car. He could also guide you by putting his hand on your back. Random intentional touches from him indicate that he is trying to get closer to you.
Keyword 4: The guy will sit next to you or stand next to you. If you can find him in your personal space, then he likes to be around you. Another indicator is whether the guy is leaning towards you while he’s talking to you or listening to you. Men don’t usually align their bodies with a person, but will if they’re interested.
Keyword 5: If you’re cold, he lends you his jacket. Not only does this show his willingness to make you comfortable, it also sends signals to other guys that you’re off limits. Lending you a jacket also means he has to stay and get the jacket back when you leave, giving him a reason to stick around.

Do high school students still wear letterman jackets?
Over the past 20 or so years, students who wear letterman jackets have dwindled to almost zero. Back in the 80’s nearly every student on a varsity team wore a jacket. Today, they are no longer in the book store.

Bill Holand, Class of ’71, wears his Letterman jacket while working at the De Smet carnival.
In the last 20 years, the number of college students wearing Letterman jackets has dropped to almost zero. In the ’80s, almost every student on a college team wore a jacket. It is no longer available in bookstores. So what happened?
“The bookstore stopped stocking the Letterman jackets because people stopped buying them,” said bookstore director Matt Mohan. “One of the reasons is that they’re really expensive.”
College swimmer Aidan King, one of the very few kids at school who still wears the letterman, says he loves his jacket.
“I like the way they look and I think they have that authentic high school vibe,” King said. “It’s just a sign of the dedication I put into my sport.”
JV football coach and Class of 1982 graduate Pat Littleton believes there is a shortage of mail carriers, partly due to students no longer wearing jackets. He also blames a diminished pride in high school athletics.
“Back when you were out in the community, you wore your jacket and people knew you went to a certain school,” Littleton said. “You were proud of that.”
Senior varsity hockey player Josh Abel said he loves the look of the old Lettermans.
“I would definitely wear a Letterman jacket,” said Abel. “I think the throwback looks really cool, makes it look like it’s 80’s. I think the girls would love it.”
Senior varsity footballer Teddy Delker sees a different side. To him, Lettermans are obsolete.
“Not my style. I’m more of a quarter-zip guy,” Delker said. “I think they’ve gone out of style.”
Senior varsity hockey player Ryan Brickhouse says he’d like the Lettermans back, but with a twist.
“Personally, I would wear a letter jacket if it gave it a contemporary twist,” Brickhouse said. “I don’t want to wear the same jacket my parents wore.”
62% of the school said they would buy a Letterman jacket. Since they are no longer available in bookstores, Mohan wants to be able to sell them online.
“I think they’re great. When I was a student here, all the athletes wore them,” Mohan said. “So we could set something up so kids who want one could order a Letterman, and we could facilitate that ordering through the bookstore.”
What do you wear under a letterman jacket?
Remember that the letterman jacket is casual by default, so balance it out with smart trousers underneath to avoid looking sloppy in the office. Choose a design in cool, monochrome colours, add a button-down shirt underneath and pair with charcoal grey or navy chinos.

What is a varsity jacket?
Also known as a letterman, baseball or letter jacket, this effortlessly cool outerwear essential is sportier than the bomber jacket but dressier than the track jacket. Traditional designs feature two or more contrasting colors with a collarless wool button-through body and leather sleeves.
A brief history of the varsity jacket
The varsity jacket was first donned by young athletes in 1865, when the coach of the Harvard University baseball team decided to reward his key players by emblazoned with a giant letter “H” on their wool sweaters. Later dubbed the “Letterman,” this wearable status symbol was later adopted by the university soccer team. The Letterman soon became the sweater seen on campuses across America, with schools and colleges proudly branding both their top athletes, male and female, with their prestigious initials.
In the early 1900s, these exclusive sweaters received an upgrade when the Letterman sweater was joined by the more expensive Letterman jacket. Both items of clothing made of wool were very popular in monastery circles in the first half of the 20th century. By the 1950s, the varsity or letterman jacket had also become a fashion must-have off campus, popularized by several icons of the era including James Dean and Elvis Presley.

By the 1980s, you didn’t have to be an American athlete to rock the varsity jacket. Hailed as a fashion staple on both sides of the Atlantic, the letterman peaked when Michael Jackson donned an iconic red design for his infamous Thriller video.
How are varsity jackets styled by male celebrities today?
The classic varsity jacket remains a cult favorite among celebrities today, with contemporary artists such as Jay-Z, Kayne West, Drake, P. Diddy, Justin Bieber and Zac Efron all recently pictured in rocking varsity styles.
This season, however, the all-American uniform worn by high school football players and their cheerleading pals got a stylish makeover. For 2020, the versatile varsity jacket has a little less bulk and a little more structure, with flattering cuts and a range of stylishly muted pastel colors to choose from. From sporty to preppy, retro to classic, here are our top picks for layering with this season’s coolest jacket.
How to wear a boys varsity jacket
Go for a slim fit
The fact that you no longer have to be a well-trained athlete to work with the varsity jacket proves that today’s designs are not quite as clunky or overtly macho as they used to be. Modern letterman jackets offer a more subtle, tailored and flattering silhouette that pairs easily with a wider range of pants and bottoms. Smaller men should still opt for a minimalist, slim-fitting design that doesn’t add disproportionate bulk to the top half. Balance with tapered or slim-fitting trousers, but add some punch with graphic stripes on the shoulders, cuffs or neckline.
For a simpler approach, choose a monochromatic piece
If you’re new to the varsity trend, there’s no need to dive right in with a flashy red Michael Jackson number. Stick to simple black and white designs for an understated jacket that won’t overwhelm the rest of your wardrobe and can take you from day to night without a thought. For a casual yet stylish combo, layer your white varsity jacket over a plain gray or black t-shirt, add a pair of distressed jeans and finish off the look with some classic canvas kicks. Or, for a slimmer, streamlined silhouette, keep your t-shirt and jeans black and choose a varsity jacket with a black body and white or cream sleeves.
Try a pastel varsity jacket to freshen up your look
Pastel tones are ubiquitous this season. And with a college jacket in peach pink or dusty lavender you can easily combine two trends in one outfit. Soft and highly wearable, these tones will add a touch of contemporary color to your wardrobe and ensure your varsity jacket remains the main attraction of your outfit without overpowering it. Layer it over a neutral-toned tee and team it with your favorite pair of distressed jeans.
Team it with denim and hi-top sneakers
Modern college jackets in light shades of grey, white, cream and pastel go well with all shades of denim and create a simple but stylish look. These contemporary takes on the Letterman classic have a softer and more relaxed vibe that’s best suited to daywear. Pair with high-top sneakers in similar tones for a casual outfit that will become your go-to for game day, dinner or drinks in the pub.
Team it with a shirt, tapered trousers and brogues
Keep it casual but classy with a solid or neutral toned varsity jacket and wear a crisp button-down top over it paired with tapered pants underneath. Dress up your ensemble even more by throwing a pair of classic brogues into the mix, and you have an outfit that’s chic enough for the office but not too corporate to take to those after-work drinks.
What to wear with a college jacket?
casual
A white t-shirt
Tight black jeans
chinos
High sneakers
The varsity jacket and navy blue denim combo is a classic combination that has stood the test of time. For a relaxed look that’s right on trend this season, ditch the primary colors and choose a design in softer pastel combinations like teal and white, peach and cream, or lavender and grey. Team it up with skinny black jeans or casual chinos and opt for simple, sporty footwear like high tops, Converse or your favorite pair of sneakers.
street fashion
A graphic t-shirt
Black jeans
A leather basketball cap
A metallic belt
High Top Trainers
The varsity jacket lends itself perfectly to the cool, urban aesthetic of modern streetwear. Opt for sporty designs that evoke ’80s nostalgia and pair them with relaxed or slim fit black jeans. If you want to add a little extra edge, consider a varsity jacket design that features eye-catching primary color embroidery at the left chest, wrists, or waist. Layer it over a graphic tee and pair with a leather baseball cap, metallic belt or high-top sneakers for a sporty street look.
smart casual
A button down shirt
Dark gray or navy blue chinos
Golden accessories
aviator glasses
Chelsea boots or monk strap shoes
Add some flair to your after-work outfit by throwing a two-tone varsity blazer over a shirt and tie. Remember that the letterman jacket is casual by default, so balance it with a pair of smart pants underneath to avoid looking sloppy in the office. Choose a design in cool solid colors, wear a button-down shirt underneath and pair it with charcoal or navy chinos. Dress it up with gold accessories, aviator sunglasses and either sleek Chelsea boots, leather double monks or a pair of white canvas low tops.
Take Home Message
The far-reaching appeal of the Letterman jacket has endured for a staggering 150 years. This fashion favorite owes much of its popularity to its ability to suit a variety of outfits and occasions, pairing well with both casual separates and dressy work pieces. Dress it up or down to create classic, urban or even slightly quirky looks this season. Whether your look is sporty, retro or dressy, the versatile varsity is once again the jacket to be seen in.
Can you wear varsity jacket in summer?
Summer. Although most men stray from wearing jackets in warm summer months, the varsity jacket can make an impressively stylish statement when paired with typical summer clothing, like shorts and tee shirts.

Since 1865, the college jacket has been a tireless symbol of sportsmanship, athleticism and energetic youth. While it continues to serve as a badge of honor for school-age youth, the varsity jacket has shifted into mainstream menswear. You may not have worn a letterman since high school, but it might be time for you to go old school and pair this updated jacket with a variety of modern ensembles. Of course, you should keep in mind that while the varsity jacket is stylistically versatile, it has an athletic and varsity look exclusively; it is never suitable for business professionals or business casual.
Summer
Although most men go without jackets during the warm summer months, the varsity jacket can make an impressively stylish statement when paired with typical summer wear like shorts and t-shirts. For example, designer Micah Cohen’s Summer and Spring 2013 collections featured varsity jackets paired with colorful plunging tank tops, dark shorts and slip-on shoes. The men’s magazine FHM recommends polo shirts, chino shorts and espadrilles for an uncomplicated casual look.
spring
Spring weather can be unpredictable in many parts of the United States; Luckily, this allows you to pair your varsity jacket with a variety of weather-appropriate outfits. On warm days, slip into a pair of khaki or tan corduroy shorts, boat shoes and a colorful t-shirt for a modern yet comfortable look. Cool days call for a little more warmth. Prepare for casual with a vintage polo or your favorite plaid shirt, slouchy trousers and penny loafers.
autumn
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to wear your varsity jacket as the fall days grow shorter and the weather gets cooler. Use your varsity jacket to inject a little spirit into an otherwise drab outfit by wearing it with a button-up oxford, khaki pants and a pair of lace-up shoes. Swap out the khakis and trainers for a pair of chinos and colorful suede driving shoes to shake up your style routine.

What side does the letter go on a letterman jacket?
A well laid out jacket should have: The letter on the left breast, just beneath the clavicle. Numbers on the left arm just beneath the shoulder. Scholar’s patches on the right arm beneath the shoulder.

Placing the letters
There are several patches that can be worn on a Letterman jacket. There’s the school letter itself, your number if you play a particular sport, and any scholar’s badges your school might give you. Your name or the name of your school can also decorate the jacket.
Before sewing, take the time to place the letters and patches correctly. A well-tailored jacket should have:
The letter on the left chest, just below the collarbone
Numbers on the left arm just below the shoulder
Scholar’s patches on the right arm below the shoulder
Names or words on the back, centered and moving in an arc from one side to the next
If your patches are iron-on, heat them before sewing to keep them in place. If they are not sensitive to heat, use pins to hold them securely in place as you sew. After pinning or ironing the letter, be sure to step back from work and look at the jacket from a couple of feet away. This will ensure your letter is evenly laid out before you start sewing.
Is it hard to get a letterman jacket?
It is very easy to get a letterman jacket with your own varsity team patches, varsity letter and logos. Design and get varsity sports team jacket starting from $70.

Do colleges give out letterman jackets?
Most schools require that you participate on a varsity sports team, such as football, basketball, baseball or soccer, to obtain a letterman jacket. Often the coach has discretion over who will receive a letterman jacket.

fulfillment of the requirements
Most schools require you to participate on a collegiate sports team such as football, basketball, baseball, or soccer to get a Letterman jacket. It is often at the discretion of the coach who gets a letterman jacket. You may need to finish the season in good shape and have played in a certain number of varsity games or competitions throughout the year. For example, a high school baseball player would earn a letterman jacket by attending at least half of all scheduled baseball games. Some schools require a minimum GPA to play on a varsity team or wear an equivalent letterman jacket. All requirements vary by school. Typically, student athletes are only given a letterman jacket throughout their high school careers. However, medallions or bars can be added for additional activities.

Practical and beautiful I love the jacket. Ever since I was a teenager (now 67) I’ve wanted a varsity jacket. The jacket is of very good quality and I like the roomy fit that allows you to wear a sweater or sweatshirt underneath. The classic black is very practical and can be worn with both jeans and business casual. Give it a try, I can’t imagine you’d be sorry.
Perfect We bought a jacket from another seller 5 years ago. Went back to this vendor to purchase another and this vendor let us down. FJackets was able to provide an exact duplicate of the Letterman jacket we requested. If you are interested they can make the same jacket. Thank you FJackets!
so cool!! I love this letterman jacket! It just arrived today. It looks good, feels good and fits well. PLUS, it’s made in the USA, so it’s of superb quality and workmanship. I definitely recommend this clothing store.
My husband will love it in the size I ordered Run in the small side as well. My husband wears a medium and the large fits better. Thank god I ordered a medium and a large (obviously sent the medium back). Otherwise very nice jacket.
Great product and customer service I bought last minute but they delivered it to me 1 day earlier than expected! My husband loved it! He is happy with the jacket and is considering getting another one in a different colour. Thanks very much!
Ordered high quality jacket 2XL expecting it to run small. Not so. These are American sizes. I contacted the manufacturer and spoke to a very nice agent who asked me to return it to him for XL and a perfect fit of the jacket. Also extremely well done.
My first school jacket arrived yesterday. Removed it from the box. tried on. LOVE IT!!! I mean LOOOOVVVVEEEE!!! Now I have to get a new zip-up hoodie to go with it. Come fall, I’m sooooo ready for you now!! THANKS VERY MUCH!!!
Excellent quality Although I had to return the first one I ordered as it was a bit too big on the arms for my husband, the one size smaller fitted perfectly. I thought he would like the roomier fit but he preferred the slim fit. Excellent quality.
15/10 I would buy again anytime. please do it!! This is the best letterman jacket I have ever owned. Not too warm, not too cold, nice arms, strong stitching, durable. Ordered from Canada took some time to get there but honestly it was 1000% worth it. This replaces a jacket I’ve had for over 20 years and it will certainly last just as long. Wonderful purchase. Also perfect fit! broad shoulders, clips in easily, looks good overall. Will wear it every day.
Excellent Jacket This is a great varsity jacket. Lightweight but durable and of excellent quality. This jacket is perfect. I love it! Consider a second purchase in a different color.
A little too expensive This Letterman jacket is exactly what you would expect it to be. Sleeves and warm wool It’s a good weight but I have to say I thought they were a bit gFJacketsy with the price! Oh, and the delivery of this item was slower than most.
I highly recommend this jacket. The fit was excellent. Was disappointed with other products, this one was very different. Nice quality and great fit. Nice customer service, arrived very quickly, size of the jacket is very good.
Good quality true to size. Quality is good, the material is nice and soft. The pockets could be a bit deeper. The only downside is that the jacket tends to ride up when you close it. Overall I gave it an A+
Fits well The jacket fits well. Honestly I only give 3 stars because they are not a soft material. Not exactly rough either… but a bit stiff. I still wear it. That fits well. I just expected more comfort.
Great fit will be worn for a long time. Bought XXL a few years ago, I’m between XL and XXL so I’ve read that the jacket runs a bit big. My old jacket was a bit big, long, 6 feet. 240 pounds so I just went for XL and it fits great not too heavy just right. As a veteran, I always try to buy American made shoes and I was not disappointed with this purchase.
Gift for my husband Its amazing quality, he loved it, very modern look, thanks for the fast shipping too
Excellent varsity jacket Fits great, very warm and excellent varsity jacket. I have an XXL and it’s perfect.
Perfect jacket for team love, love, love this jacket. It’s well made, fits well in all the sizes I’ve had to buy and I’ve never had a compliment from any of my choir members.
Nice jacket! Great experience, shipping on time.
