5) Remove after 24 hours and strain the fermented rice water into your favorite container or spray bottle. Rice water has a higher pH than our hair, so dilute the fermented rice water with plain water before using.

Side note: Due to the fermentation process, fermented rice water has a pungent odor. This is normal but try adding your favorite essential oils like lavender, tea tree, lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint to counteract the odor and get the added hair benefits.

Rice water is surprisingly beneficial for hair as it contains an impressive array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids – the building blocks of protein. If you are struggling with hair growth, protein moisture balance, limp, lifeless locks that don’t last through wash day, this post will really help! Here’s my modified rice water rinse routine and my amazing results!

Rice water is an effective DIY protein treatment thanks to amino acids – the building blocks of protein. It strengthens the hair, adds shine and smoothes the cuticle, reduces surface friction and detangles.

Benefits of Rice Water for Hair

There are so many benefits to using rice water for hair, it begs the question why not use it?! Here are some of the amazing benefits, but it takes time, patience, and persistence to see long-term improvements in hair. If you want to get the best results from using rice water, you need to do it consistently (weekly) for at least 4-6 weeks, sometimes longer.

Tik Tok trend or scientifically proven?

The many benefits of rice water aren’t just a “TikTok trend.” Rice water rinses are thousands of years old and backed by numerous studies. According to the International Journal of Science, rice water extracts are effective in maintaining hair health. Another proven benefit is its ability to improve hair’s elasticity and reduce surface friction, as demonstrated in this study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Chemists.

Inositol is the key nutrient in rice water that strengthens and repairs hair and increases hair elasticity, creating a more defined curl pattern. Inositol remains in the hair shaft after rinsing, providing lasting hair protection.

Rinse rice water

Most people do a rice water rinse, using the creamy, cloudy rice water to repeatedly rinse through their hair. Often use fermented rice water, which is stronger, and two bowls. One to pour the rice water onto your hair, the other to catch the rice water so you can repeat when needed. If you decide to use this method, make sure you use a good conditioner.

If you leave the conditioner in your hair for any length of time, longer than just rinsing, you will need to apply a deep conditioner for at least 20 to 30 minutes. There are 3 options: boil, soak and ferment, I cook my rice. There are potential side effects of fermenting due to potential bacteria. But it’s said to be the most powerful of the three methods, and will produce the most dramatic or noticeable results. If you choose to ferment your rice, I wouldn’t recommend adding it to a deep conditioner.

My modified rice water rinse

I do things a little differently. The first time I did the rice water rinse and left it on my hair for 30 minutes, I didn’t condition it long enough afterwards and my hair felt pretty dry. Now I add a dab of one of my favorite deep conditioners, Hairfinity’s Restorative Amino Mask, and leave the modified mask on my hair for 45 minutes – 1 hour with my Curl Maven Heat Cap.

Top tip: This DIY protein, strengthening and repairing treatment is perfect if you suffer from over-moisturized hair. Hair is limp, lifeless and cannot hold a curl very long after wash day. Or Hygral Fatigue, hair feels quite soft and mushy or gummy, and excessive shedding can occur.

My modified rice water method works best when you mix it with a conditioner or deep conditioner that already contains protein. Hairfinity is getting harder and harder to find, so stock up if you can. But I’ve listed some of my other favorite conditioners and masks that work well with my modified rice water treatment.

How to save and store your rice water

The following ratio is enough for a large treatment of modified rice water, suitable for thick or long hair. Or two treatments for short to medium length or fine hair. You can store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week, either with or without the conditioner mixed in. Alternatively, you can make a large batch and freeze it in an ice cube tray. Then, the night before, simply take out two cubes and mix with your chosen deep conditioner once thawed! Brilliant time-saving method for those who are very busy but want all the benefits of rice water for hair growth, length, strength, shine and scalp issues!

Top Tip: The sun breaks down protein in hair, so weekly rinses with rice water during the summer months can really help maintain shiny, healthy, hydrated, frizz-free definition that will make a curl last longer!

Using a measuring cup, use half a liter of rice (organic, jasmine or basmati…) and rinse – however I think the starch from the rice gives the hair some additional benefits.

Add essential oils if you like, e.g. B. Rosemary, which is excellent for hair growth.

Add some Act + Acre Cold Pressed Stem Cell Serum to taste. The anti-aging complex supports the reduction of hair loss, dryness and hair loss.

All of the conditioners, deep conditioners and hair masks I use for this modified rice water treatment already contain proteins/amino acids. They’re just not very high on the ingredients list, so they’re not considered a strong or potent protein treatment. When I add the thick rice water gloop I get much more noticeable improvements and results. I advise you to do your own test with both the rice water rinse alone. And your usual deep conditioner alone before attempting to mix the two.

method

If you’re just doing a rice water rinse, don’t let the rice get sticky or the consistency will be too thick. This method is for my modified rice water treatment.

Bring the rice to a boil, stirring, until you have a cloudy, creamy, thick water consistency. This takes about 20 minutes on medium heat. The rice should absorb almost all of the water.

Once the rice has absorbed most of the water and appears almost sticky. Remove from the pot and gently squeeze in a colander to scoop out the thick, creamy, sticky water. NB: you only want the thick, creamy, watery gloop to go through the sieve – NOT the rice!!! Otherwise you’ll have pieces of rice in your hair. I usually have to scrape the rice water “gloop” from the bottom of the colander into a bowl underneath.

Add either a teaspoon or tablespoon of your favorite conditioner or deep conditioner and mix to create a creamy hair mask consistency that you can apply to hair.

The ratio of rice water gloop to deep care depends on how strong you want the rice water treatment.

Clean or condition your hair as usual and apply your modified rice water rinse mask to your hair, working from the ends up. Bring it to the top and massage into the scalp if you want to promote hair growth and/or have scalp problems. Such as dry, itchy, scaly, irritated, sensitive, greasy or oily scalp.

If you are new to protein treatments or are hesitant, leave on for 10-15 minutes first. Gradually build up to leave on for 20-30 minutes but never more than an hour.

For best results, use a Curl Maven Thermal Heat Cap.

If your hair is particularly dry or damaged, do not rinse out the treatment completely.

Rinse out with lukewarm water until milky water runs from the ends of the hair, then style as usual.

Don’t use rice water more than once a week, and don’t use it as a leave-in spray. Too much rice water, used too often, or left in hair for too long can cause damage.

I’m a single mom of two, I don’t have time for a full day of washing, including multiple rice water rinses, a deep conditioning and then my usual styling routine! So by doing this modified rice water treatment I save time and get the maximum results from so many benefits of both the rice water and the deep conditioner.

Results of my rice water routine

I’ve been making this rice water as a hair treatment for years and this has worked best for my hair in my experience. It’s soft yet strong. I have hydrated curls and frizz-free definition that lasts day after day. Instead of my curls falling off and becoming limp and lifeless within hours of my wash day.

How often can you do a rice water rinse?

If your hair is overly moisturized or your locks become flat, limp and lifeless within hours of wash day. I recommend you do this. modified rice water treatment weekly for at least 4-6 weeks. Continue longer if you feel your hair is still soft and fluffy and not holding any curls. Once the tips feel dry, reduce to once every two weeks and then gradually to once a month after clearing. Continue/repeat when hair feels soft, fluffy, limp and lifeless again. Or you may have scalp problems that flare up again because rice water for hair has so many benefits for the scalp too!

Low porosity hair may only need to do this rice water treatment once a month. But high porosity hair, which tends to always be a bit softer and moisturized, will benefit from a rinse with rice water once a week. Especially in the summer months as the sun breaks down the protein in the hair. Protein gives hair the strength and structure to not only define waves and curls, but to hold them there.

You must do this more than once to see the benefits and long lasting results! Building protein in hair is like taking an iron supplement. Don’t take an iron pill and expect instant and long-lasting results! You need to take this pill every day for at least 2 weeks before you start feeling any benefits. It is the same with rice water for the hair.

Extra strong protein boost!

If your hair is extremely moisturized, you may be suffering from moisture fatigue. Where your hair feels so soft and fluffy, it feels almost rubbery or mushy, a bit like cotton candy. You may experience excessive hair loss and your locks barely last a few hours after wash day. Then give the modified rice water treatment an extra powerful protein boost by adding some Aphogee Two Step Protein Treatment Step 1. Start by adding a teaspoon to the modified rice water treatment.
