Taking part in a NERF war probably sounds like a lot of fun, right? Well it is. Unfortunately, unless you live in a big city where wars rage on a regular basis, you’ll probably have to make things work yourself. But to do this successfully, you need to invest some time in planning.

Should you appoint yourself as lead NERF war planner, you must realize that you hold yourself accountable for every aspect of the NERF war. That means: place, time, date, food, water, toilets, garbage, rides, parents and rules. In addition, you must ensure that all of this information is shared with all participants. And that takes more than just an email or two.

So, do you feel up to the challenge? If you’re ready to organize the most talked about NERF war in your area, wait. Don’t tell anyone yet. Instead, follow these steps to plan out the important details ahead of time so when you renew the invite, you’re all set and ready to ask any inevitable questions.

Choose a location

Start with the most basic question first. Where will your war take place?

An ideal location has 3 requirements: coverage, lack of crowds, and availability of amenities. You also need to make sure you pick a spot where players can duck and hide from oncoming bullets. Nobody likes to play in wide areas! Likewise, you want your location to be as empty as possible. Choosing a place that’s teeming with young children and parents isn’t an ideal match. If there are no water fountains, restrooms, or places to grab a quick bite, attendees will be slandered as feeling uncomfortable and grumpy.

While no place will be perfect, any place with some variation on these three factors will work great.

For location inspiration, drive past your local elementary and middle schools to explore the countryside. Also check out the less popular parks in the area. Whatever you do, don’t choose a busy park as your playing field. This will only anger the parents of both the players and the little kids who might accidentally step over your NERF warriors.

Regardless of your first choice of locale, always make sure you have a backup location. Ideally, it’s somewhere within walking distance of your original location. Why? Because sometimes, despite the best of intentions, the field of your choice isn’t available or you get kicked out.

Choose a date and time

Once you have your sights set on a location, the next step is to set the date and time. How you do this will depend on how many people you anticipate participating in your NERF war and how well you know the people.

If you know several of the people planning to attend well, ask them about options for dates and times that work for them. Once you have a handful of options, you can send them out to the group as a whole and vote on what time works best for most people. You can easily set up a SurveyMonkey or Doodle survey to track people’s input.

While deciding when to start the event, you should also consider how long the war will last. That can be difficult. If this is your first foray into campaign management for a NERF war, you should probably make the event last 4-6 hours. If you don’t know many of the participants or are unsure of the number of participants, do four hours.

After hosting your first NERF war, you can readjust your times. For example, if you ended up with a bigger turnout than expected and everyone left the game screaming for more, then add two more hours next time. However, never make your NERF Wars longer than eight hours. This could put players at risk of fatigue or burnout.

Feed the troops

Of course, when hosting such a lavish event, you need to have a lunchtime schedule. While a lunch break isn’t always necessary, it’s better to schedule one. This allows you to keep the spirit and energy of the team, resulting in better gameplay.

One way to organize lunch is that everyone has to bring their own. If you go this route, make sure it is communicated clearly. If not, children could be suffering from more than just a rumbling in their stomachs.

Another solution is to schedule a lunch break where either the food is delivered or you can walk to a nearby restaurant and sit down for a quick meal. However, make sure the restaurant is within walking distance as many parents are not keen on letting their kids ride with unfamiliar drivers.

Clarification of the house rules

It’s also vitally important that you define the rules of the game long before anyone steps onto the field. The house rules are entirely at your discretion, but there are also two main methods of play that are accepted.

West Coast Rules: Each soldier has five hit points. If a soldier is hit, they lose a point and must count down from 20 while holding their weapon before being allowed back into play. During the countdown, soldiers can pick up ammo and walk around, but are not allowed to shoot or be hit during this time. A soldier must count down the last five numbers out loud and announce when he/she will be back. Soldiers leave the game permanently when it’s down to zero hitpoints.

East Coast Rules: Each player has ten hit points and loses one point for each hit. There is no 20-second invulnerability period where the same West Coast rules apply. Soldiers leave the game as soon as they run out of hit points.

You can change the rules as needed to suit the game you want to play. Just try to make everything self-explanatory and easy to remember. It also recommends making eye protection mandatory for every player.

Choose a style of NERF War

Make sure you choose a style of NERF War at the beginning and that everyone understands what they are going to play. Because the rules vary between games, players need to be aware of which rules they must follow.

However, they are not assigned to a specific game. After each fight you can change the style to keep things fresh.

The big reveal

Once you are ready to announce your war, you should do so 3-4 weeks in advance. People need to be able to get it on their calendars early so they can make a firm commitment to attend.

Hosting a successful NERF war, however, requires more than just sending out a few emails. If nothing else, you’ll have to work hard to recruit players. Ask your friends to ask their friends, post on forums and Reddit, put up physical flyers at the local university and go to Instagram and Facebook and start posting. Make sure you spread the hype. If you don’t do this, your results will not be what you hoped for.

The big day has arrived and it’s time to play with some NERF guns! You might think that now that everything is organized, your work is done. Nothing is further from the truth.

As a host, you must also transform yourself into a leader. You must become a NERF warrior. Ultimately, it will be you who decides which fighting style to play. You determine the lunch break. It will be you who divides the teams. They determine how much fun the players have.

To ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible, you must not lose control of the war.

A natural look helps, of course. But the right attitude is the key to a successful NERF war. You want to make sure everyone is having fun. As the leader, you set the tone, so when you’re having a good time, so are they.

After each fight, you’ll want to regroup the teams. To keep things even, try to randomize the selection process. Make sure each team has a relatively even spread of weapon types and player skills. After a few battles, it will be easier to determine the skill level and make team building much faster.

Randomizing the teams keeps the game light-hearted. You don’t want the most successful team to win every time. This will only serve to frustrate the other NERF fighters. However, if people really want to form solid teams, let them. Just make sure you keep the teams for the duration of the war and that the competition doesn’t get too hot.

Also, try to measure player enthusiasm. Did you like the style of the final battle? If not, toggle it.

Nerf targets, bases and battlefield

To prepare for your nerf gun party, you need to create your bases, battlefields, and DIY nerf targets. This is the most time-consuming part, so make sure you start doing it before the day of the party.

You’ll be amazed at how you can turn your backyard or basement into a nerf war with these easy DIY party ideas. Plus, you’ll save money by making these bases and targets at home.

Goal #1 – Use pool noodles – I bought pool noodles and cut them to about 8 inches.

Goal #2 – Get some empty Pringles cans and wrap them in colored paper to stick on the can.

Craft Bases & Battlefield Ideas

For a nerf war you need a battlefield and bases. It gives the kids a place to hide and shoot. Plus, it just seems cooler, especially if you have an open yard or basement.

The first step is to collect large empty crates of all shapes and sizes. Ask your friends and neighbors to save some for you. Or ask your local Costco or grocery store about it.

Next, head to your local hardware store or Amazon for camouflage, orange, brown, and green spray paint. Take the crates to the grass or anywhere you can get paint and spray paint the crates by mixing the colors to look like camouflage.

In the final step, tape a group of crates together and spray paint team #1 or team #2 with the orange spray paint. I used large rocks in our garden to anchor the boxes to the ground to keep them from falling over.

At the first party we bought the Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster for all the kids. The Strongarm is a good starter nerf gun that all kids can use and is reasonably priced. (see below)

At the second party we decided that all the kids had their own Nerf guns that they would rather use, so we just let the kids bring their own.

To buy or not to buy is a decision you must make based on your guest list.

I’ve noticed on a few reviews that people said the tips were harder, but we didn’t notice the difference between the Nerf gun brand and the generic brand.

Nerf Party Decorations

Nerf colors are blue and orange so I would use those colors to decorate for the party.

Use orange, blue, or camouflage tablecloths to cover your party table, your dinner table, and the place where the kids eat their pizza.

To save money, we like to buy cheap dollar tree party decorations and usually buy our tablecloths there.

For plates and napkins, you can use plain orange plates or buy Nerf Party Plate Sets.

Finally, hang some orange and blue streamers to complement the decorations. You can even tape some Nerf Bullets to the streamers.

Party Setup & Schedule

At the party entrance, set up a table with all the child’s favors. I used an orange tablecloth and orange streamers to make it festive.

On the table, place the nail apron filled with 10-20 bullets, goggles and a nerf gun if included.

Party Favor without Nerf Guns

If you want to distinguish the teams, you can cut bandanas lengthwise and tie them to the child’s arms. Pick two colors, one for each team, and place them on their nail apron.

Get the party started with Nerf Targets

As the kids come in and settle down, have them start shooting at the targets. I tried to do three stations so that the queue at each station is not too long and to give them variety.

Nerf Gun Party Targets

After the Nerf stations, we took a short break for pizza before starting the Nerf games.

Tip: Try to have a tarp or something similar behind the targets so you don’t run after the bullets if they miss.

Record flag nerf game

To give the Nerf War a little structure, we played the Capture the Flag game. Hide two different colored cloths or flags while the kids eat pizza.

Divide the children into two teams. Each team is looking for a specific color flag. Make sure you show the kids what the flag looks like before hiding it.

Bandanas I cut and used for the Capture the Flag game.

When the game starts, the children use their bases as cover. If they run out to look for the flag, the other team can shoot at the kids looking for it.

If a contestant is hit, they must return to their base and start over. I’ve also set up boxes with more bullets in two places as refill stations.

Whichever team finds the other team’s flag first wins the game.

Depending on how long the game lasts, you can play it again or take a cake break while you hide the flags for the next round.

We usually invite parents who also want to play to come pick us up a little earlier and join in. The kids love it when the parents play and it’s great for the parents too.

If your kids love to play Fortnite, turn nerf party into Fortnite birthday party theme with just few adjustments.

When the party is over and all the boxes aren’t destroyed, we usually keep a few for the kids to play with later.

You will also find that the children will reuse the goals as well. Once the kids find out how much fun this is, all their friends will come over and want to play it again.

Fully automatic Nerf blasters are the ones with the muscles and intimidating looks designed not only to win battles, but to have tons of fun, too.

Nerf machine guns aren’t always the most handy blasters, and they also need batteries to work, but as a Nerf fan, you need at least one of these flywheel-powered blasters with an acceleration trigger in your arsenal.

In this article, I’m going to share with you the seven best fully automatic Nerf guns you can buy today.

Top 7 Fully Automatic Nerf Guns:

What is a fully automatic Nerf Gun?

Also referred to as motorized or machine-powered nerf guns, fully automatic nerf guns are battery-powered blasters that can continuously fire ammo simply by holding the trigger.

The internal system, a battery-powered flywheel, takes care of the actual shot as long as you hold the trigger.

The flywheel must be activated before you can start firing, which is usually done with a separate acceleration trigger or a simple on/off button.

As you can imagine, the performance of a fully automatic Nerf gun depends heavily on the efficiency of this internal flywheel system.

One way to judge the performance of a fully automatic Nerf blaster is to look at how many rounds it can fire in a second. And Nerf has come a long way in this regard.

If a blaster could hit 2 or 3 darts per second back then, that would be phenomenal. However, expectations are much higher these days, and that’s mostly because of the Rival series.

If you’ve read my list of the best Nerf Rival guns, you know that blasters in this series are all about performance.

For example, the Rival Nemesis can fire 5 rounds per second, and the Rival Prometheus tops that at a staggering 8 rounds per second. Wow!

Okay, if those blasters can fire that fast, don’t you run out of ammo just as quickly?

Yes, and that leads to another criterion to look for when buying a new fully automatic Nerf gun: shooting performance.

You will find that most fully automatic Nerf blasters come with a large magazine. This is important, otherwise you’d be done taking photos in seconds.

But there is a huge difference between a 20-round capacity and a 200-round capacity. The Prometheus, for example, holds 200 high-impact rounds, which is great. But at 8 laps per second, that’s almost a necessity.

The Nemesis holds 100 rounds, which is also very generous, and will let you fire for about a minute before needing to reload.

The biggest disadvantage of Nerf machine guns is that they require batteries. Not only that, they usually consume a lot of battery power.

Because of this, it’s important to not only consider how many batteries you’ll need, but also to make sure you’re getting high-quality batteries that can last you a long time.

It’s also good to point out that the Prometheus, for example, comes with a rechargeable battery that’s not only lighter than a set of traditional batteries, but also much more efficient.

What about semi-automatic?

Note that there are also semi-automatic Nerf guns, which are very different from fully automatic blasters.

A semi-automatic Nerf pistol can only fire once when pulling the trigger. It doesn’t continue to fire like fully automatic blasters.

Top 7 Fully Automatic Nerf Guns

Here we go, my favorite seven fully automatic Nerf machine guns. Blasters that are tough, intimidating, powerful and a lot of fun to play battles with.

1. Nerf rival Nemesis MXVII-10K

Let’s start with the Nerf Rival Nemesis, which also tops my list of the best Nerf guns of all time. Like so many other nerfers out there, I’m a huge fan of the Nemesis for a variety of reasons.

The Nemesis was first released in 2017 and was quite a revolutionary Nerf blaster at the time. With incredible power, huge magazine, full auto and great ergonomics, the Nemesis quickly established itself as a fan favorite.

The greatest thing about the Nemesis is its magazine, which is not your normal Nerf magazine. It’s a hopper system that allows you to quickly toss in the Rival high-impact rounds, and the hopper pushes the rounds in front of the blaster so they can be fired.

Operating the Nemesis is quite a unique experience, and I haven’t met a Nerf enthusiast who doesn’t like this blaster. The Nemesis is comfortable in your arms, and with such a large magazine and great performance, it’s still the best full-auto Nerf gun in my books.

2. Nerf rival Prometheus MXVIII-20K

The Prometheus is another Rival blaster that literally outperforms every other Nerf blaster out there. The Prometheus is a little over the top, but it’s so much fun. It’s also a blaster that isn’t for everyone.

Just like the Nemesis, the Prometheus features a funnel-style magazine that’s both convenient and efficient. But if you thought the Nemesis had a high firing capacity, the Prometheus doubles that with a capacity of 200 high-impact shells.

It also outperforms the Nemesis when it comes to rounds per second. With a fully loaded magazine, the Prometheus can fire at 8 rounds per second, which is just incredible.

As you can see, the Prometheus needs to be held with both arms at the hip, which is different from other Nerf blasters. But that’s actually quite ergonomic, especially since this fully automatic blaster is not that heavy.

3. Nerf Ultra selection

The relatively new Nerf Select is a fully automatic, flywheel-driven, magazine-powered blaster in the Ultra series. While the Ultra series hasn’t been the most successful so far, the Ultra Select is one of the better blasters in this line.

Ultra Blasters shoot Ultra darts, but the Nerf Ultra Select comes with 10 Ultra darts and 10 AccuStrike Ultra darts. The newer AccuStrike Ultra darts are designed to be more accurate than the original Ultra darts. In terms of performance, shot speed and distance with the Ultra Select are fairly reasonable, if by no means outstanding.

The biggest disadvantage of the Ultra Select is the low shooting capacity of only 10 darts (per clip), especially when compared to the Nemesis and Prometheus. However, the Select comes with two sets of magazines and darts, and both magazines attach to the blaster at the same time. Loading the magazines and switching between them during use is a simple process.

4. Nerf N-Strike Mega Mastodon

The N-Strike Mega Mastodon is a fully automatic flywheel powered blaster equipped with an integrated dart drum that can hold 24 darts. This blaster is one of the greatest Nerf guns ever made and for that reason alone it deserves to be part of your collection.

The Mastodon requires six D batteries to operate, and those batteries make this weapon noticeably heavier. The 24-dart firing capacity is generous, but not as generous as some of the other full-auto Nerf guns on this list. Apart from that, the Mastodon is one of the most powerful mega blasters and is just plain fun to shoot with.

As you can see in the picture above, you have to hold the mastodon using the handle at the top of the hip, which adds a bit to the fun factor. Overall the Mastodon is a fantastic blaster that works well and looks great.

5. Nerf rival Perses MXIX-5000

The third Rival blaster in this list is the Perses, a compact flywheel and conveyor belt blaster with a firing capacity of 50 high impact rounds. The Perses also has a handy funnel system that works very well with no jams or glitches.

The Perses has a compact, comfortable and lightweight design that is refreshing compared to the Nemesis and Prometheus. It also works very well with a smooth and fast firing mechanism.

Like other Rival series blasters, the Perses’ technical setup includes a primary trigger, trigger lock and acceleration trigger. Combined with the funnel, this gives a very decent rate of fire and shot speed.

If you’re looking for a powerful fully automatic Nerf blaster that isn’t as bulky as some of the others, the Perses is an excellent choice.

6. Nerf N-Strike Elite Titan CS-50

We now head into N-Strike Elite territory. The N-Strike Elite series is still a fantastic range of blasters despite the rise of other popular series in recent years.

The Nerf N-Strike Elite Titan CS-50 is an absolute beast of a machine that, in my humble opinion, deserves a spot on this list of the best Nerf full-auto guns.

The Titan CS-50 is a very large blaster, similar to the Prometheus I included above. At 50 darts, the CS-50 has a smaller firing capacity than the Prometheus, but it’s actually the largest non-hopper nerf mag out there.

To operate the Titan CS-50 you need 4 type D batteries. These batteries can be inserted at the back, which creates a good weight balance. Another cool part of the Titan CS-50 is the super-long barrel, which rotates as you fire.

7. Nerf N-Strike Elite Infinus

The last model in this list is another N-Strike Elite blaster. Released in 2018, the Infinus is a superb looking machine gun that comes equipped with a generous 30 dart drum.

What sets the N-Strike Elite Infinus apart is the hopper on top of the blaster, which allows you to load darts without having to remove and reload the actual drum. You can do all of this while operating the blaster, making it a cool feature.

Also note that you can replace the 30-dart magazine with any other N-Strike Elite magazine if you prefer. The Infinus requires 4 D batteries to operate, which you must insert into the supply on the back of the blaster.

Overall, the N-Strike Elite Infinus is a super sturdy, high quality, ergonomic blaster that performs well. If you’re looking for a non-Rival fully automatic Nerf gun, the Infinus is a great choice that won’t disappoint.

We all know that lists like this are always a bit subjective as everyone has different opinions, which is totally fine. But I think most of you would agree with the top 7 above.

In a NERF war, there’s nothing more satisfying than nabbing an enemy at long range. For most blasters, this is like trying to take down a tiger with a pocket knife – possible, but highly unlikely! For these truly impressive sniper feats, you need a really good long-range NERF gun that can accurately fire darts from more than a few yards away.

What do we mean by a long range NERF gun?

The majority of NERF guns don’t fire as far as these blasters – some reach a whopping 120 feet on average! You no longer have a reason not to take out your enemy in one fell swoop with a single shot.

So we dug deep to unearth the cannons that shoot arrows the farthest and most accurately. The following weapons appear in this rating because they are tried and tested. In addition, they are the latest editions of previous NERF guns with a few small improvements.

NERF N-Strike Elite Centurion Blaster

This blaster makes it to the top of the best long range NERF gun because darts fired from its barrel travel a mega distance. Imagine taking out your opponent about 100 feet away! If he uses a futile blaster, there’s no way his arrows can reach you. This is the ultimate speed record breaker when it comes to NERF guns.

It comes with six mega darts that are not usually compatible with ordinary NERF guns. You also get a mega dart clip, a detachable tripod stand and instructional material. Loading the darts in the clip is a walk in the park

Its length is equal! It measures 29.5 inches in length, 14 inches in height, and 3.5 inches in width, making it one of the largest NERF guns in history. It also weighs 3.8 kilograms. The Long Ranger is recommended for children aged eight and over. Finally, younger children may not be able to handle the weight of the Super Blaster.

NERF N-Strike Elite Sonic Ice Centurion Blaster

NERF released a new skin of the Centurion about a year later under the Sonic ICE sub-series. It’s rumored to perform slightly better than the original red version (above), but I can’t say I’ve noticed any significant differences. A few friends have commented that the Sonic ICE version makes a few different sounds when it fires, but I can’t say anything particularly stands out. Get both and make your own comparison!

NERF N-Strike Rhino fire blaster

Just like its Centurion counterpart, the Rhino Fire shoots its arrows up to 100 feet away. Another reason this blaster made it onto this list of the best long range NERF guns is that it’s a double-barreled attack blaster. In addition, thanks to the motorized firing mechanism, you will be considered the king of the battle. It holds 25 darts in each of its double barrels. This gives you an incredible firepower of 50 darts.

When you are on the go, just detach the tripod stand and run with more ease. When your target is in sight, stop and put the tripod back in place, then line up a steady shot. If you thought the Elite Centurion blaster was long, this one is longer! It measures a whopping 33.8 inches in length, 15.9 inches in height, and 6 inches in width.

It also weighs 6 kilos. Due to its enormous dimensions, only children over the age of 8 should use it.

NERF N-Strike Long Strike CS-6 dart blaster

At 3 feet long, this is perhaps the longest NERF blaster in its class ever made.

This long size will give you a long range shot that will surprise your opponents. Because it can hold two quick-load clips, you never have to worry about running out of ammo. Make the most of the flip-up visor and tactical rails to effectively pelt your enemies.

The air-powered blaster comes with a barrel extension so you can target objects at long range. It is among the best long range NERF guns. It measures 24 inches in length, 12.5 inches in height and 4 inches in width. Weighing 4 pounds, it is recommended for children three years and older.

NERF Vortex PRACTICE Blaster

Use the 10 disc blaster to blast your opponents out of battle for the champion of NERF wars. It has a removable shoulder stock and a tactical rail, accessories for which are sold separately. Add to that the 10 discs, a magazine and building instructions, which makes it easily one of the best long-range NERF guns.

It works through pump action and is recommended for ages eight and up. As a precaution, do not modify the lenses on this Long Ranger. Never aim for your opponent’s eyes or face unless they are wearing a sturdy mask. It measures 18.6 inches in length, 11.3 inches in height and 3.6 inches in width.

In his latest video, he said he became interested in the inner workings of a Nerf gun when he realized the blaster only fires one dart at a time, no matter which barrel is loaded.

HOW A NERF BLASTER FIRES When the handle on the toy’s base is pulled, a plunger moves with it, which compresses a spring between the plunger and the base to lock the plunger in place. When a user pulls the trigger, the spring is released, pushing the piston up to shoot compressed air into the dart cylinder. The plunger then automatically returns to its original position for re-cocking. Springs in the barrels push the valve forward when there is no dart in the chamber. If it contains an arrow, the valve is pressed against the spring. The position of the valve defines the path that the compressed air can take. Air enters at the bottom, but when a barrel is empty an O-ring valve prevents air from entering as a bullet cannot be fired. advertisement

The process is described in a patent as “cascading a blast of compressed air” to blast the kegs one at a time.

Hammack explained that when the handle at the base of the toy is pulled – to “cock” the gun – a plunger moves along, compressing a spring between the plunger and the base to lock the plunger in place.

When a user pulls the trigger, the spring is released, pushing the piston up to shoot compressed air down the arrow barrel, which ejects the arrow.

The plunger then automatically returns to its original position for re-cocking.

Why the gun can fire one sponge dart at a time, Hammack says, is because each barrel has a spring-loaded valve.

“This spring pushes the valve forward when there is no dart in the chamber. If it contains an arrow, the valve will be pushed against the spring,” he says.

The position of the valve defines the path that the compressed air can take.

Air enters at the bottom, but when a barrel is empty an O-ring valve prevents air from entering as a bullet cannot be fired.

As the piston moves up, it forces compressed air into the barrel, which ejects the dart (see illustration). Hammack studied the weapon’s engineering because he wanted to know how it fired arrow after arrow

With the path blocked off, the air enters the second valve and is forced down the barrel to fire an arrow.

Once this is done the valve will spring forward creating a path to the third valve.

“This only directs the air to the first loaded barrel, even if the darts are randomly loaded,” says Hammack.

Each cylinder has a spring loaded valve (diagram is shown above). It pushes the spring forward when there is no arrow in the barrel. If it contains an arrow, the valve is retracted. The position of the valves determines the path the air takes when the piston moves inward

The air enters at the bottom of the mechanism. An “O-ring” on the first empty barrel means that no air is entering the chamber, so the air goes to the second valve as the valve is pulled back, forcing air into the barrel and firing the dart (see image above).

He points out that once users understand the mechanism, they can beat it.

“When you partially insert the first and second darts, the valves are half open, allowing air to flow into the first and second barrels and of course the third barrel.

“This splits a single blast into three weaker streams.

“When I pull the trigger, all three arrows fire at the same time – although they don’t go very far,” he explains.

The expert says the blaster is “the epitome of good engineering”.

Once the mechanism is understood, it can be hit by a part loading two darts into the gun. This means when the trigger is pulled, air rushes into all three barrels (shown), firing three darts at once
