Mold thrives on damp surfaces, so it’s no surprise that washing machine rubber seals are a common victim. If you don’t remove the mold in time, it can lead to an odor that could affect your clothes during the washing cycle.

So how do you get mold from washing machine rubber? Check out the helpful tips below.

How to remove mold from the rubber seal of a washing machine

1. Pre-clean with a cotton pad, cloth or clean towel

The first step is to pre-clean the rubber seal. This is an essential step as it makes the cleaning products applied later more effective. Dampen the towel or rag with soapy water and gently start cleaning the rubber seal. Be sure to reach every corner below and beyond.

Rinse the towel every time it looks dirty. Also remember to change the soapy water if the seal is too dirty.

Your main goal in this step should be to remove all but the most stubborn of stains.

2. Thoroughly clean the soap dispenser

Mold often grows on solidified soap between the cavities of your machine. Your next step should be to remove this soap with a carpet or cloth soaked in soapy water. You may consider removing the soap dispenser entirely for easier cleaning.

Some dispensers cannot be detached, making it difficult to reach the right corners. In this case you can use a pipe or bottle cleaner. Make sure the dispenser dries before reattaching, or leave the machine open to ensure it dries for non-detachable ones.

3. Spray the mold with mold remover

Spray bottle mold removers make mold removal easier. Like pipe and bottle cleaners, spray bottles work best in areas you might not be able to reach with your hands.

Aim for the areas with the most mold to ensure it breaks away from the surface.

Don’t worry if the mold doesn’t come off right away. You can leave the sprayed cleaning agents on for a while before the mold and dirt dissolve.

Use a cloth to wipe the mold off the rubber seal when you’re done spraying.

4. Run a normal wash cycle

Go ahead and run an empty machine wash. This step is critical to mold removal and therefore requires hot water to be effective.

You should set your device to the hottest settings to get the desired results. Adding cleaning agents also improves the effect.

You should add 1 cup of bleach and a similar amount of baking soda (aka baking soda).

It is safe to combine bleach with baking soda provided you follow normal safety procedures when handling bleach. However, do not combine bleach with other chemicals as this can be dangerous.

If you don’t have bleach, try a residue-killing washing machine cleaner along with 1/2 cup of dish soap.

Run the wash for a few minutes and repeat if the odor and dirt persist.

5. Wipe the rubber with a clean, soft cloth

After the wash cycle is over, you need to wipe off any remaining mold. You will need a soft cloth for this step.

It is advisable to wipe the mold off with the fabric while the machine is still hot. The mold is soft and doesn’t require too much force to remove.

It is best to use fresh water to wipe the rubber. Rinse and wipe it for the last time. Make sure you leave the machine dry and open after this step.

6. Clean the rubber seal frequently

If you don’t give mold its preferred habitat, it won’t grow. It is best to ensure that the rubber is always clean and that there is no accumulation of soap or dirt.

It’s a good idea to clean your washing machine’s rubber seal at least once a month. You can also do an empty machine wash every month if the whole process feels overwhelming.

Remember to use the right amount of bleach and hot water during these routine cleanings.

You should also be careful not to over-clean the seal. Rubber seals eventually wear out, and intensive cleaning could cause this to happen more quickly.

Why should I clean the seal?

Washing machines use vast amounts of water, so it’s no surprise that every surface inside a washing machine is a breeding ground for mold.

Without regular cleaning, this can accumulate and become a serious problem. The rubber seal is often overlooked as part of a regular cleaning schedule, but if this area is left untreated it can become less hygienic and contribute to unpleasant odors.

Even with regular drum interior cleaning and service cycles, care must be taken to access the hard-to-reach places on the inside of the seal.

How often should I clean the rubber seal?

Every time you do a service wash! Most washing machine manufacturers recommend that you give your machine a service wash once a month, especially if the machine is used heavily or for particularly dirty clothes.

Beyond this regular cleaning, try to periodically inspect the seal for visible signs of mold growth. If you unload the machine and notice dirt on the surface of the seal, this is a key indication that you should take the time to clean the seal as soon as possible to prevent mold from forming.

If you’ve ever accidentally washed a tissue, you may have found it clumped up in the rubber grommet folds – always check this area after washing to make sure there aren’t any undissolved wash tabs stuck. These can cause some of the bad odors in a washing machine.

Cleaning the seal during a service wash

If you wash the machine regularly, add a cup of baking soda inside the drum and around the gasket. Also, add a cup of bleach and baking soda to the detergent drawer.

If you don’t have bleach on hand, you can use 2 cups of vinegar, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1/4 cup of water instead.

Let the machine idle for a few cycles and use the highest possible temperature setting, ideally 90 degrees. This is especially important if you operate the machine at lower, more economical temperatures during normal use.

There is no set number for the recommended number of maintenance washes. If the machine is visibly dirty or you have performed a service wash for the first time, you may find that it needs to be run many times to get the best results.

Look inside the drum after each cycle and if it still smells or you can see visible black spots on the surface, run the cycle one more time. After you’re satisfied that the service washes have done their job, you can tackle those hard-to-reach spots on the inside of the seal.

Mix a few drops of dish soap with some warm water and wipe the seal off with the mixture and a clean cloth.

Be sure to also remove the inside and underside of the seal – the inside is notorious for collecting dirt and bacteria and can block door drain holes.

Clean the seal with white wine vinegar

If the rubber seal just needs touching up, or a service wash didn’t remove all the dirt, you can clean the seal with household vinegar. You’ll need white vinegar for this trick, and we’re going for a combo of cotton balls and buds.

For the large areas of the rubber gasket, dampen the cotton balls (or pads) in white vinegar and wipe or scrub away the mold.

For particularly stubborn mold, let the white vinegar sit for a few minutes before wiping it away.

Use a cotton swab for the hard-to-reach areas of the seal. Using your fingers, pull the fold of the seal forward and use a cotton swab dipped in vinegar to remove the mold and debris caught in between.

Be prepared before you start – you will most likely need a couple of cotton swabs to clean the entire gasket.

Mold and dirt can collect anywhere, so make sure you clean the inside of the gasket all the way around.

The bottom of the seal might have worse buildup, but that doesn’t mean the top is sanitized and can be left to its own devices.

Once you’ve cleaned the entire gasket, you’ll need to flush away the vinegar and residue. The easiest way to do this is to empty the washing machine on a hot temperature.

Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent mold from building up on the inside of the gasket.

Leave the machine door open when not in use. After completing a cycle, leave the door open to allow air to circulate and surfaces to dry naturally. Remove the laundry as soon as the cycle is finished. When water is allowed to pool and stagnate in the machine, it creates the perfect environment for bacteria. To prevent this, simply remove the laundry as soon as possible! After a cycle, use a clean cloth to dry the surfaces around the door, rubber seal and glass to remove any residue or detergent left behind.

One reason for mold growth on many washing machines is the washing temperature.

Many people run most washing machine cycles at 40 degrees or less, which might be friendlier to the environment, but it doesn’t clean the inside of the machine very well.

Regular washing at temperatures below 40 degrees can leave detergent residues that encourage mold and dirt to form.

To get around this, try washing the odd cycle at a higher temperature. For example, my household washes clothes on 30, but we wash towels or linens on a higher temperature to clean the inside of the machine.

However, one of the main disadvantages is that they can stink of mold and mildew. At first it would just be unsightly black spots on the front loader’s rubber seal (seal). But soon the whole washing machine starts to stink and even your washed laundry. In our comparison, we found that this problem is more common in Bosch and IFB washing machines. That’s because their seals fold in a way that allows detergent and residue to settle inside. Comparatively, LG is better in this aspect.

But regardless of which brand you choose, if you are careful enough and follow a few basic tips, you will be able to eliminate mold from your washing machine. Let’s get into that first.

Tips to avoid mold in your washing machine

As with anything else, prevention is better than cure. As you know, mold is a living organism. They need moisture, food, and a dingy environment to thrive. Cut these off and mold can no longer survive. Let’s explore how to do that.

Make sure not to add too much detergent when washing the clothes. The excess detergent residue settles on the seal and becomes fodder for mould.

When not in use, leave the door of front-loading washing machines open. The air flow allows the excess moisture to evaporate.

Place a clean towel next to your washing machine and wipe the seal after each wash. If this is not possible, at least wipe it down every week.

Do not leave wet clothes in the washing machine for a long time. Use the time delay feature to get your clothes ready on time.

If possible, place your washing machine in a location with adequate ventilation.

How do I remove mold from the rubber seal of a front loading washing machine?

If you find mold on the rubber seal of your front loading washing machine, act immediately. Otherwise, it will spread everywhere and make it difficult to clean. Here is the step-by-step guide on how to remove mold from a front loader seal.

Time needed: 13 hours. How to remove mold from front loading washing machine? Wipe the seal. The first step is to wipe down the gasket to remove mold, hair and such residue from the gasket. Use a clean cloth and wash separately so you don’t transfer the mold to other items. Alternatively, use paper towels to clean so you can dispose of them. Make a paste of baking soda and bleach We don’t give an exact amount of baking soda to use as it depends on the extent of mold growth. Take baking soda in a bowl and add just enough bleach to make a paste.

Use baking soda and not baking powder. Ideally, use Clorox bleach instead of Ala. Clorox contains 7% sodium hypochlorite while Ala contains only 4%. Therefore, Clorox gives better results compared to Ala. Apply paste Use a toothbrush to apply the paste thoroughly to the affected areas of the rubber seal. Apply liberally to completely cover the area. Leave it overnight or for 12 hours. Wipe Wipe the paste off the rubber seal with a damp cloth. Bleach almost eradicated the mold in that time. Run the Washing Machine on Bleach Pour a quarter cup of bleach into the drum and run the washing machine on its hottest cycle. Mold not only grows in the rubber seal, but also in the tub that surrounds the drum. Do not put bleach in the detergent dispenser as the washing machine will only absorb it into the drum at the final stage. This would not adequately disinfect the drum.

Precautions

Bleach, while effective, can damage the rubber seal. So don’t use this method all the time. Instead, opt for methods to prevent mold.

As previously mentioned, use baking soda, not baking soda. Also, opt for Clorox Bleach instead of Ala. If you use other brands, make sure it has a sodium hypochlorite concentration of at least 7%. Also, NEVER mix bleach with vinegar or acid as it will release chlorine fumes which are harmful if inhaled.
