Craft beer is one of my absolute favorite things, so of course I love to visit breweries and see the beer where it’s brewed. It seems that no matter where we are in the US we are close to a brewery as there are over 5,000 breweries in the US. In fact, one of my favorite breweries is in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska, in a quaint small town of 2,000 people. Which isn’t too surprising since each state has several breweries producing craft beer.

One of the best things about craft beer is visiting the places where the hop froth is created.

Whether it’s a weekend activity with friends or a date night with your significant other, visiting a brewery is fun and educational. Depending on which state you are in and what laws are in place, breweries often serve food, have food trucks on site, or allow you to bring your own snacks and meals. And many places are dog-friendly, so you can bring your favorite dog(s).

Craft breweries each have their own personality, which is expressed through their venue and location. Some are no-frills establishments with little more than a few tables and chairs by the tanks. Others, like Stone Brewing World Bistro and Garden in Escondido, California, are more grandiose and include a restaurant and gardens to stroll through or play outdoor games or just sit and relax. Most craft breweries fall somewhere between these extremes, using their taprooms to showcase their inspiration and individuality.

When it comes to what to wear in a brewery, almost anything goes. Breweries are a frequent destination for bike and running clubs, and many breweries host yoga classes, so it’s typical to see people wearing their workout gear while enjoying a refreshing brew. And breweries are a popular spot to grab an after-work drink or catch up with a study group. So you will see every type of clothing you can imagine.

So what do you wear to a brewery if you want to look cute and stylish?

Comfort is the main thing. Serious. I can’t stress this enough.

Wear cute sneakers. This gives you the versatility of being able to stand when there’s no seating, play games outside, and even take a tour to see the brewing process (closed-toe shoes are often a requirement). If you’re most comfortable in sandals or flip-flops, be sure to wear them.

I know skirts are comfy, cute and comfy, but trust me, wear pants or shorts instead because many breweries have communal tables with benches or picnic tables or low lounge chairs. Getting in and out is much easier and potentially less embarrassing when wearing pants.

Carrying a shoulder bag or backpack is helpful for freeing your hands to carry your drinks or play games without having to figure out where to store your bag. Choose a bag that’s roomy enough to carry a water bottle so you can stay hydrated while you sip. However, a brewery is probably not the place to bring your favorite bag if you’re worried about spilling something on it.

If you swipe right enough times, you’ll eventually land on an IRL date. That means you need a place to go, and if you’re smart, decide where that date takes place. Ditch the dinner nobody wants to sit through and do something you really enjoy. Go to a brewery.

Full Disclosure: I’ve been in a relationship for more than eight years and haven’t had a first date since high school. Don’t write me off just yet. During this time, my girlfriend and I have been a sounding board for numerous relationships. We’ve helped friends on first dates, watched relationships grow, and then attended weddings. We’ve also seen people start a relationship and then watch that relationship crumble and fall apart. I’m not necessarily saying a brewery would have been a better first date proving ground to prevent the latter, but I’m not saying that either.

To make sure I wasn’t wrong, I asked the VinePair office and a few friends. I got a resounding yes: breweries are less awkward, have less pressure and, as one friend put it, “it’s easier to escape quickly when things are awkward.”

Even the people who don’t normally like beer said they’d prefer a brewery to the same old restaurant date they went back and forth with. It’s more exciting (and less expensive) than sitting at a table for two trying to balance eye contact attractively and talking about your favorite movie while trying to hide how weird you look while eating.

Unless you’re one of those people who date for the free meal. Then you should stick to restaurants.

Tiger Beer saves real tiger cubs (and adult tigers too)

In the list of the most adorable baby animals, baby tigers are in the top five, right next to baby hippos. But people are working the hardest to make sure there are no more tiger cubs left in the wild; Fewer than 4,000 remain, according to USA Today.

That’s why Tiger Beer, the Singapore-based brewery operated by Heineken Asia Pacific, is taking steps to protect its namesake. Tiger Beer and the World Wildlife Fund are collaborating in a campaign called 3890Tigers. The project will run for six years to try to bring the tiger population to 6,000 by 2022.

Tiger Beer donated $1 million and also makes limited edition cans. That might not sound like a big deal, but Tiger Beer hasn’t changed its design in 84 years. Please give me the tiger.

Fake Budweiser looks even grosser than I thought

On May 5, Chinese officials blew up a fake Budweiser plant that was producing 600,000 cans of Budweiser a month. Now there is video of the operation and it is worrying.

People throw cans into a clear tub filled with dark, frothy liquid. Then women dip cans into the liquid with their bare hands and place them on a conveyor belt. This isn’t the high-tech, fancy operation that wine counterfeiters use. This is just disgusting and disturbing.

Still, I firmly believe it doesn’t knock until you try it. And I haven’t tasted a fake Budweiser (as far as I know). So maybe I should set my judgment aside for just a second. Who knows? Hands can add a certain je ne sais quoi to a beer that is notoriously tasteless.

The best first date outfit is one that makes you feel like your best self. Although it sounds cliche, behavioral science proves that looking good makes you feel good. This connection between what we wear and how we feel is known as the theory of clothed perception.

In a 2012 study, researchers at Northwestern University found that clothing can alter a wearer’s psychological state and improve performance. One test group was instructed to wear white lab coats worn by physicians (a garment associated with intelligence and diligence), while the other group wore plain clothing while performing a series of attentional tasks. Those who wore lab coats performed better on the tests, made fewer mistakes, and showed improved attention spans.

By applying this theory to your date night outfits, you could potentially influence your date’s subconscious as well as your own. Wearing items that are symbolically associated with success and sex appeal — like the little black dress or a well-tailored suit jacket — can help you feel more confident when flirting.

When in doubt, wear red or black

According to color psychologists, red and black are the best colors for the first date. Wearing the two romantic colors especially if you are a woman can make you appear more attractive and desirable on your date. While there are obvious unconscious connections to red roses, lace lingerie, and romantic occasions like Valentine’s Day, scientists have found the connection runs deeper than these cultural contexts.

In 2008, two University of Rochester psychologists observed: “The color red makes men more infatuated with women. And men are unaware of the role color plays in their attraction.” An even more intriguing discovery was that men are willing to spend more on a date if the woman wears red.

Similarly, a 2018 study of over 600 participants on a British reality dating show called First Dates found that black is the most popular color for a first date, regardless of gender or sexual preference. Although it’s considered a “safer” color choice than red, it has still helped wearers look more fashionable and attractive.

Avoid wearing orange and brown

In a survey of 1,000 people by UK wholesaler Buy T-Shirts Online, participants were asked to match colors to personality traits of the wearer. Orange and brown were least associated with confidence, intelligence, and sexuality — three of the most desirable qualities on a first date. Not surprisingly, black and red received the most associations with these positive traits.

In the same color association study, only 2% of women and 8% of men said they would wear brown on a first date, and only 2% of women and 6% of men thought orange was a good first date color. So why were orange and brown the most disliked first date outfits?

Once again, it comes down to color psychology. Orange is a color used to attract people’s attention. It’s used on warning signs, construction cones, and safety gear, so wearing orange on a first date can send subconscious signals that you’re being shallow, attention-grabbing, and even arrogant. Brown has the opposite effect. While it’s perfectly fine to wear brown accessories (preferably a pair of dressy leather loafers or your favorite handbag), wearing too much brown can make you seem boring and overly serious.

“If you’re wearing a glamorous look, you should know that you look very attractive,” said Nancy Etcoff, a professor of psychology at Harvard University, one of the lead researchers on the study. But over time, “confidence can wane. So if you find yourself in a situation where you need to be a trusted source, you might want to take a different look.”

What not to wear to the pub
