Do the legs
The table legs are designed for heavy-duty support. They are tapered from top to bottom. Each leg consists of two 1,4 boards butted together. Begin by cutting the leg fronts (F) and leg sides (G) from 1.4 inch oak. Before cutting the front and side leg tapers, draw precise cutting lines. First, establish a top and bottom of each. Mark a point on the bottom of the front legs, 1⁄2″ from a long edge, and then draw a mark 31⁄2″ down from the top edges of the front legs at the same long edge. With the skirt on a flat surface, place the liner assembly inside the skirt (Photo 2 ) and attach the liner assembly to the filler blocks with glue and #6 ´ 2″ wood screws.
When cutting leg tapers with a circular saw, use a straight edge guide and plywood stop blocks.
Position the liner assembly inside the skirt assembly so that it rests against the filler blocks.
Holding the legs in place, drill 3⁄8 inch diameter holes through the skirt, legs, and liner for carriage bolts at all corners.
Cut a notch from the top of the leg fronts to the lock bolt hole to ease in removing and installing the legs.
Attach the legs
The legs slide into the slots in the corners of the frame and are secured with carriage bolts. Begin by slipping the wide ends of the legs into the gaps at each corner of the skirt frame. They should fit snugly and their tops should be flush with the top of the apron. Mark the outsides of the skirt sides for carriage bolt holes. Center the holes 31⁄4″ from the side ends of the skirt. Hold the legs and drill a 3⁄8″ diameter hole. Hole through the skirt, legs and liner at each corner. Remove the legs. At the top of the front legs, use a jigsaw to extend the handles all the way to the top of the front legs. These notches allow you to remove the legs for storage without having to remove the carriage bolts. Insert the legs and slide the carriage bolts through the holes. Slide washers onto the bolts and install wing nuts to secure the legs. If a leg or two doesn’t fit exactly, try swapping them out – you might find a better fit.
Make the main bodice
The main board is used as a gaming table and as a base for the poker table top. Begin by cutting the main top (H), main studs (I), and short studs (O). Sand the pieces smooth and apply self-adhesive birch veneer edge tape to all four edges of the main panel. Cut and sand the excess edge tape. Draw reference lines on one side of the main top, 21⁄4 inches from each edge. Center the main studs and short studs on the main top with their outside edges on the reference lines. Attach the studs, making sure the main studs are on opposite sides. Test fit the main hood on the apron. If the main deck doesn’t fit, realign the cleats. Attach the main deck to the liner by threading 21⁄2″ countersunk screws through the main braces and into the liner and filler blocks.
Do the poker top
The poker table is a large octagonal tabletop with ledges to hold poker ships. Cleats are attached to the underside of the poker shell to allow it to be centered over the main shell. To cut the poker top (J), start with a 48-inch square piece of plywood. Marking out the octagonal cut lines requires a bit of basic geometry. First draw reference lines between opposite corners and locate the center of the workpiece. Mark the centers of the edges on each of the four sides. Draw lines across the poker top, connecting the midpoints of opposite edges. Next, construct a homemade stick compass by drilling a centered screw hole in one end of a 1´2″ piece of scrap. (The scrap piece must be at least 25″ long.) Drill another centered hole for a pencil, 24″ from the end first hole removed. Thread a screw through the first hole and into the top center of the poker. Insert a pencil into the remaining hole and turn the stick compass to draw a 48″ diameter circle on the top of the poker. Draw along a ruler cut lines connecting the points where the reference lines intersect the circle cut lines along the pencil with a circular saw and sand the poker top to smooth any rough edges or saw marks to trim the poker casing (N) Make sure it fits the sides of the poker top, use an electric miter to cut ing box or a backsaw and a miter box a 221⁄2° outside bevel on one end of a poker trim piece Note: 221⁄2° is commonly marked on miter box, circular saw and radial arm saw After cutting this bevel, position the poker trim on one edge From Mark the trim where the next point touches it, then cut another bevel that slopes in the opposite direction from the bevel at the other end. Attach the trim piece to the poker top with glue and 11⁄4″ brads and continue cutting and measuring the poker trim to fit the table. Fill any brad holes with wood putty and sand the edges smooth when dry.
Attach the main top to the liner by threading screws through the main lugs and short lugs into the liner and filler blocks.
Carefully draw the cutting lines for the poker plate using a ruler and a homemade bar compass.
Mark the trim pieces to match the edges of the poker table and cut to length with a 221⁄2° bevel.

Attach the trays
Trays are attached to each edge of the octagonal poker board to hold poker chips. Cut sheet metal and sheet metal paneling (M). In order for the trays to fit the underside of the poker deck, the inside corners are cut off at a 45° angle on one long edge of each tray. At each end of one long edge, draw cutting lines forming a triangle with 2-inch sides and use an electric miter box or circular saw to cut the corners. Use glue and 11⁄4 inch brads to attach the tray liner to the long rectangular edge of each tray so the bottoms are flush. Turn the poker upside down. Use glue and #6 ´ 11⁄4″ wood screws to attach the trays to the poker plate on each straight edge. The trays should extend 31⁄2″ past the top edges of the poker, so use a 1´ 4 piece as Spacers between the tray liner and the top edges of the poker when you put the pieces together. Cut the poker cleats (K) to size and position them on the top center lines of the poker. (The poker clamps hold the poker plate in place while it sits on the main plate.) Center the poker plates on the lines and make sure their inside edges are 161⁄8 inches from the center of the table. Attach the poker plates with glue and #6´11⁄4″ wood screws.
Apply the finishing touches
Set all nail heads and fill all nail holes with undyed stainable wood putty. Glue 3⁄8″ diameter oak dowels into all screw countersinks, then sand down to level. Finish sanding all surfaces and apply finish of choice. We used three coats of tung oil.

How to build a poker table in 18 steps
Step 1: Mark the plywood gaming table
On the underside of the table, measure and mark the sides 14 inches from each corner. Using a ruler, draw a line to connect the two marks at each corner.
Step 2: Cut out the gaming table and the plywood top
Using a circular saw, cut the lines to trim off the corners of the table to create an octagon. Lay the ½-inch plywood for the lid, best side down, on your work surface. Put the table on the lid; Position it so the uncut sides are facing the corners of the lid. Draw the outline of the table on the lid. Remove the table, place a ¾ inch board on the edge along the outside of each marked line, and trace a second set of lines. This outer ring represents the size the lid needs to be to cover the table once its 1×4 skirt is in place. Using a circular saw, cut just outside the outer ring; Leave the line to create a slightly larger surface than the table.
Step 3: Miter the edge pieces
Lay a length of 1×2 flat on the gaming table, flush with its edge. Mark the length of the side on the edge of the 1×2. Miter the piece at opposite 22½ degree angles so the long edge matches the length of the side of the table. Clamp the piece on the table. Mark and miter the remaining pieces. To keep the 1×2 pieces organized, number each side of the table and the bottom of the corresponding piece.
Step 4: Install the outside edge
Apply glue to the bottom and ends of the 1x2s. Using a pneumatic nail gun and 1-inch nails, nail through the underside of the table and into each piece to hold it in place.
Step 5: Cut and Install the Coaster Blocks
Miter one end of each ½ x 6 trivet at a 22½ degree angle. Use a combination square to mark the center point, drawing lines at a 45-degree angle from the corners of the just-cut end of each piece.
Attach the coaster block to a scrap block with two clamps. Center the hole saw on the crosshairs of your two 45 degree marks. Use 150 grit sandpaper to smooth the inside edges of the circular cutout. Repeat this process to create a total of eight coasters.
Place the coasters on the game table inside the 1×2 edge pieces so that the angled ends align with a miter joint and all point in the same direction. Nail the trivet down from the underside of the table with 1 inch nails. Hold the nail gun at a slight angle to prevent parts of the nail protruding through the coaster piece.
Step 6: Install the inside edge
Lay a length of 1×2 flat on the table inside the ring of coaster blocks so the edge of the 1×2 is against the top edge of a coaster block. Mark the distance between the angled ends of two coasters. Miter the ends of the 1×2 at opposite 22½ degree angles. Lay the piece in place and mark the remaining pieces until all the pieces of the inner ring are sized. Apply glue to the bottom and ends of each piece, insert and nail through the bottom of the table to secure. To position the nail gun under the table, cut a 1×2 scrap piece to the distance that the inner ring will sit from the table edge and nail it to a second perpendicular block to create a T-shaped spacer. Hook the T to the edge of the table with the stem underneath and position the nail gun on the end of the stem.
Step 7: Attach the apron
Miter saw cut ¼ inch spacers from a scrap block and place them on the outer ring of 1x2s. Position a 1×4 against the edge of the table with the top edge flush with the standoffs to create a ¼ inch lip. Mark the corners of the table at the top edge of the 1×3. Using a miter saw, bevel the ends of each piece at a 22½ degree angle. Attach the pieces to the edges of the table using wood glue and 1¼-inch nails.
Step 8: Mark the playing surface
Measure the inside length and width of the open center space and subtract ⅛ inch from each measurement to account for the felt. Cut the MDF playing surface to this size. Center the cut piece across the open center space. Mark the junctions of the inner ring of 1x2s on the playing surface. Connect the marks on either side of each corner to create a small octagon. Use a circular saw to cut the corners off the playing surface. Label the appropriate side of the playing surface and table. That way, once the felt is wrapped around the playing surface, you’ll know which sides are aligned.
Step 9: Attach the felt
Coat the underside of the felt and the top of the playing surface with spray adhesive. Allow the glue to dry until tacky to the touch. Place the playing surface upside down on the center of the felt. Wrap the felt over one edge and secure with a staple. Wrap the felt over the next page and fold the excess underneath like a gift wrap. Once all the edges are tightened and the felt is glued and stapled, trim off the excess with utility scissors and set the playing surface aside.
Step 10: Assemble and mark the collar
Cut two 1×4 boards to the width of the top of the post. Cut two more 1×4 boards to that width plus 1½ inches. Apply glue to the ends of the short pieces and sandwich them between the longer pieces to create a box. Drive 1¼-inch nails through the long pieces into the ends of the shorter pieces to secure them in place. Center the assembled collar on the underside of the table and mark its inside and outside circumferences.
Step 11: Drill pilot holes
Remove the collar and drill three ⅛” pilot holes through the table on each side between the gauge lines.
Step 12: Attach the collar
Apply glue to the top edge of the collar and place it on the underside of the table, lining up with your previous marks. Allow the glue to dry until it holds the collar in place – or nail some nails around its edge to hold it – and flip the table over. Using a countersink, prepare the pilot holes and drive 2″ screws through the plywood and into the top edges of the collar.
Step 13: Cut the Stand
To position the taper of the Newel post about halfway between the table and the floor, cut off the top and bottom of the post. First, mark the cutting lines 29 inches apart on all four sides of the post. Place the post on the miter saw and cut to size. If your miter saw cannot cut the thickness of the entire post, cut partially through and then roll the post to the opposite side to complete the cut. Repeat to cut the second line.
Step 14: Drill pilot holes in the feet
Center the short side of a bracket on the post, flush with its bottom edge. Use a ruler to mark an alignment line on the bottom of the post and console. Apply wood glue to the console and reinstall it. Using a pneumatic nail gun, fire 1¼-inch nails through the edges of the console and into the jamb to hold it in place. Using a drill/driver equipped with a ⅝” paddle bit, drill a 1″ deep countersunk hole through the base of the Console and at an angle to the Upright. Angle the drill/screwdriver up at a steep angle to drill out the hole and make room for the screw head. Repeat the process to create a second countersunk hole next to the first one.
Step 15: Attach the feet
Drive 6″ Wood Screws through the countersunk holes and into the Console and Upright. Repeat steps 15 and 16 of our free chart table plans to attach the remaining brackets to each side of the Newel post, one at a time.
Step 16: Screw through the collar and into the newel
Slide the top of the stand into the collar attached to the underside of the table. Drive 2 inch screws through each side of the collar and into the post.
Step 17: Trim the Lid
Mark the lengths of the nose and fillet along the edges of the plywood lid. Miter the ends of each piece at a 22½ degree angle. Apply glue to the back and ends of each molding and to the edges of the lid. Attach the molding flush with its surface to the lid by carefully driving 1-inch nails through the molding and into the lip of the lid.
Step 18: Assemble the finished poker table parts
Fill the mounting holes and joints with stainable wood putty and thoroughly sand the entire assembly with 220 grit sandpaper. wipe on a stain finish; After drying, apply a protective layer of tung oil, wax or polyurethane. If desired, line the insert of each coaster with self-adhesive cork. Once the final finish is dry, fit the felt covered playing surface into the inner ring of 1x2s and place the lid on the table.
