We Love ‘Fire and Ice’ Caladium
Artful ‘Fire and Ice’ Caladium is just that, artful. Its beautiful color is hard to resist. Adaptable to the garden and container as well as indoors, Fire and Ice prefers heat and moisture to thrive. Mass planting of “Fire and Ice” is dramatic and the seasonal color of the foliage is very welcome, especially for gardeners who struggle to achieve continuous flowering in the garden. In a container garden, one or three caladiums (depending on the size of the container) make a great focal point.

Botanical Name: Caladium hortulanum ‘Fire and Ice’
Foliage: Mostly silvery white with accents of green, pink and red
Height: 18-30 inches
Spread: 12-18 inches

Light requirements: sun or shade
Plant with the pointed end of the tubers up and about 2 inches below the soil line. Be stingy with the fertilizer. Caladiums don’t need a lot of fertilizer and the leaves of the plant, especially the white part, can be burned from overfeeding. When adding caladiums to a container garden or in a mixed garden bed, choose plants with similar fertilizing requirements to make gardening easier.
Caladiums prefer humus rich soil that is reliably moist. Wilting and drooping of the leaves is a sign that the plant needs water. If planted in USDA zones other than 10 and 11, remove the tubers after the first severe frost/leaf dieback and store in dry peat where the temperature stays above 45°F.
When planted indoors, caladiums require temperatures above 20°C and frequent spraying to meet moisture requirements. Avoid hot, direct light and keep an eye on the soil—an indoor heater can dry out the soil, a situation incompatible with good caladium health.
