Call waiting has been around for years. With a call waiting feature, when you receive a phone call, you will hear a beep in your ear indicating someone else is calling. You can tap the flash button on your phone – if you know which it is – to answer the second call while holding the first.

Some people don’t use call waiting because it’s rude to both callers. Others don’t use it because they have no idea what the flash key is.

When a second call comes in on iPhone, the phone will ring (and/or vibrate) as usual, and the screen will display the caller’s name or number as usual. Buttons on the screen give you three choices:

To ignore . The incoming call is forwarded directly to voicemail. Your first caller has no idea anything happened.

Hold call + answer. This button gives you the traditional call waiting effect. You say to the first caller, “Can you wait a moment? I have another call.” The iPhone puts you on hold and you connect to the second caller. At this point, you can toggle between the two calls or merge them into a conference call as described in Add Call (Conference Call).

End call + accept. Tapping this button hangs up the first call and answers the second.

If call waiting seems a bit annoying overall, you can turn it off; Phone. When call waiting is disabled, incoming calls go straight to voicemail…

Why your Samsung phone won’t ring for incoming calls

Muted calls doesn’t necessarily mean you have a big problem with your phone. There are various reasons why your Android phone won’t ring when someone calls, including:

Your ringer volume is turned down.

Your phone is in Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode.

You have activated call forwarding.

Your phone is paired with Bluetooth®.

There is a problem with a third-party ringtone.

The speaker connector is clogged.

Your phone is infected with malware.

Your phone is physically damaged.

Check your phone for dust, dirt and damage

First, look at your device and look for any damage like dents or cracks – this could be a sign that your phone may need to be replaced, but we’ll wait until we’ve tried a few other fixes. Next, check the speaker connector for dust or dirt, which you can easily remove by blowing it off or cleaning it with a cotton swab dipped in a drop of rubbing alcohol.

Restart your phone

Whether it’s a Samsung not ringing or any other Android device, try restarting your phone for a quick and easy fix.

Samsung phones:

Press and hold the power button until you see the power off prompt. Tap Restart, then tap Restart again to confirm.

Other Android phones:

Press and hold the power button until you see the options menu. Tap Restart.

Check your volume settings

If a simple restart doesn’t work, it could be a problem with your ringer volume, especially if you’re still listening to other media like music or videos. To check your volume settings:

Samsung:

Open settings. Tap Sound & Vibration. Tap Volume. Drag the ringtone bar to the right to increase the volume.

Other Android:

Open settings. Tap Sound & vibration. Drag the ring and notification volume to the right to increase it.

Turn off silent or do not disturb mode

You can temporarily silence your ringtone and pings from texts with Silent or Do Not Disturb mode. Once you enable this feature, you need to turn it off to get your phone to ring again.

Samsung:

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the quick settings panel. Tap the Do Not Disturb icon to turn it off (it should be greyed out when off and blue when on).

Other Android:

Open settings. Tap Notifications > Do Not Disturb. Check if the setting is disabled. If it doesn’t, tap the Deactivate Now button. Check schedule settings and other settings to make sure they won’t be activated later.

Make sure Airplane mode is turned off

If you put your device on airplane mode during a flight and forgot to turn it off upon landing, your phone won’t ring. How to turn it off:

Samsung:

With your device unlocked, swipe down from the top of the screen to open quick settings and check if Airplane mode is on. If that’s the case, tap Airplane mode to turn it off (it should be greyed out if it’s off).

Other Android:

With your device unlocked, swipe down from the top of the screen to see your quick settings. Check Airplane mode to see if it’s turned off. If it’s on, tap the setting to turn it off.

Make sure call forwarding is not enabled

Samsung phones include a call forwarding option in the Settings app. You might even have it enabled to record voicemails by using a third-party app like Google Voice.

How to check if call forwarding is enabled on your device.

Open the Phone app. Tap on the three vertical dots in the top right corner. Tap Settings > Additional Services > Call Forwarding. If a phone number is listed under Always forward, tap Always forward, then tap Turn off.

If call forwarding options are enabled, turn them off.

Check Bluetooth

If you have paired your Android phone with headphones or earbuds and are not using them, you will not hear your phone ring. To disable Bluetooth pairing:

Samsung:

Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner, then tap Advanced > Block pairing requests.

Other Android:

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open quick settings and tap Bluetooth to turn it off.

Remove third party ringtones

Third-party ringtones sometimes contain a software bug that can cause your phone not to ring. If you downloaded one, that could be the problem. As much as you love the sound of a duck quacking when your mom calls, try going back to a default ringtone on your phone. This is how it works on most Android devices:

Open the Settings app. Choose Tone or Tones and vibration. Tap Ringtone or Ringtone. Select one of the preloaded ringtones – you may need to press OK or Save.

Perform a factory reset

If you have gone through all these options and your Samsung Galaxy or other Android phone still does not ring, try performing a factory reset to restore your device to its original factory settings.

1. With Android stock options

While Android devices come in many flavors, the same basic processes can be used to enable Android call waiting on most of them. If you find that your smartphone doesn’t have an option to toggle this feature or if the option is grayed out, try one of the additional methods listed below.

Step 1: Open Call Settings

The busy problem on incoming calls did not occur when using Android and iPhones. Long before we started using smartphones, a phone was made just for receiving and making calls, sending and receiving text messages. And even then it occasionally happened that a caller could not reach you because your line always seemed busy – due to your settings or a setting error.

The way we solved the incoming call busy problem with the “un-smartphones” we’ve used in the past is of course different from the way we’re doing it now on our Android and iPhone solve. Once you have determined that you have a problem here, it’s pretty easy to solve it on your smart device.

How do I know I have the busy on incoming calls issue?

You may never know about your incoming call busy problem until you hear from friends about how they tried to reach you but couldn’t get through. You might ask why your phone is busy when someone calls, or ask the question “call forwarding” – why are your calls always forwarded?

In some cases, you might get missed call messages from a specific number that the person didn’t even know the call went through.

This is not a good event for either personal or business relationships. Imagine the opportunities you could miss just because you were unavailable. What about the misunderstandings that could result from friends believing you blocked their calls on purpose or that you denied them the call?

So how can we fix it?

It’s actually quite easy to fix. The most common reasons are Airplane Mode, Call Blocking, Call Forwarding or Auto Reject.

1. Check Airplane or Airplane mode on Android and iPhone

These steps work the same way for both iPhone and Android phones

Go to Settings > Click Call Settings > Click Call Forwarding.

For some Android phones, your phone may not have call settings in settings. In this case, follow the steps below.

NOTE: Call waiting is a network dependent service. You must have an active SIM card in the phone, otherwise you may not be able to access the additional call settings.

NOTE: If you have call waiting enabled, you can handle multiple calls at the same time. If it is activated, you will be notified by a beep when you receive another call. Choose to either accept or reject the incoming call. The person calling you will simply hear the dial tone and if you reject the call they will either hear the busy signal or be transferred to your voicemail service if supported and enabled.
