What were calling cards used for?
A visiting card, also known as a calling card, is a small card used for social purposes. Before the 18th century, visitors making social calls left handwritten notes at the home of friends who were not at home.

In the 19th century, men and women needed personalized phone or business cards to maintain their social status or to rise in society. These small cards, about the size of a modern business card, usually contained the owner’s name and sometimes an address. Business cards were left at home, mailed to individuals, or exchanged in person for various social causes. Business cards have become an indispensable tool of etiquette, with elaborate rules governing their use. The essential convention was that a first person would not expect to see a second person in the second’s own home (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving their calling card in the second’s home. In leaving the map, the first would not expect to be admitted at first, but could instead receive a map in their own home in response from the second. This would serve as a signal that a personal visit and meeting at home is welcome. On the other hand, if no card was delivered or a card was mailed in an envelope, this discouraged a personal visit.
Adopted from France, they were called une carte d’adresse from 1615 to 1800, and then became carte de visite or visiteur with the advent of photography in the mid-19th century. Photographic cartes de visite or “CdVs” were not generally used as business cards: they did not have the owner/sitter’s name printed on them, as they were usually given away to family members and close friends, or were from celebrities.
Business cards became common among the aristocracy of Europe and also in the United States. The whole procedure depended on there being servants to open the door and take the cards, and was therefore limited to the social classes employing servants.
If a card was left with a corner bent, it meant that the card was left personally and not by a minion.

Some business cards featured intricate engraved ornaments, embossed lettering, and fantastical coats of arms. However, the standard form of visiting card in the United Kingdom in the 19th century was a plain card with nothing on it other than the bearer’s name. Sometimes a gentlemen’s club name was added, but otherwise no addresses were included. Business cards were kept in ornate card cases.
The business card is no longer the universal feature of upper-middle-class and upper-class life that it once was in Europe and North America. The business card, for which contact details such as address and telephone number are essential, is more widespread. This has led to such details being included even on modern household business cards: Debrett’s 2007 New Etiquette advocated the inclusion of home and club addresses (bottom left and right, respectively), but states that the inclusion of a telephone or fax number would be ” a sorcism”.[3]
According to Debrett’s 2016 handbook, in addition to his name, a gentleman’s card traditionally included his title, rank, home or work address (bottom left), and club (bottom right). Peers’ titles are given without a prefix (e.g. simply “Duke of Wellington”), courtesy titles are given in a manner similar to “Lord John Smith”, etc., but “Hon” (for “the Honourable”) is not used (Mr. Ms etc. are used instead). Those without peerage or courtesy titles may hold ecclesiastical titles, military rank, “Professor” or “Dr,” or Lord, Mrs, etc. For archbishops, bishops, deans and archdeacons, the territorial title is used (e.g. “The Bishop of London”). Men may use their first names or initials, while a married or widowed woman may use either her husband’s name (traditional usage) or use their own.The only surname letters used are those indicating service affiliation (e.g., “Captain J. Smith, RN”).The Social Card, a modern version of the calling card, includes the name that A person’s cell phone number and email address, rarely including an optional home address Family social cards include the names of parents and children.[4]
