How to Call United States From Saudi Arabia

Prepaid calling cards can be purchased and used for long distance calls for a flat fee. Cards offer you a specific talk time to specific destinations. For example, advertisements for these cards may offer “$5 for 1000 minutes to Guatemala.”

After purchasing a card, you use it by calling an access number, which can be either a local phone number or a toll-free number. You will then be asked to provide your personal identification number, which is usually listed on the card you purchased, and the phone number you wish to call. An automated voice can tell you how much time is left on your card, as well as give you other information or options.

What should I look out for before buying a prepaid phone card?

When purchasing a prepaid phone card, make sure you fully understand all instructions, fees, and terms and conditions. Make sure you:

Read the fine print on the packaging or back of the card to understand any terms or restrictions on using the card.

Understand the tariffs for your particular calling card and any fees that may be charged for using the card. In some cases, the value of the card is reduced after each use of the card by “call,” “disconnect,” or “hang-up” fees, or by a “maintenance” fee that is levied after the card is used for the first time on a regular basis distances.

Check if the card’s advertised minutes are for a single call only, or if the minutes can be used across multiple calls.

Check the card expiry date to avoid losing unused minutes.

Find a toll-free customer service number marked with or on the card and make sure you won’t be charged for the call.

Ask your friends and family to recommend cards they’ve enjoyed using.

Beware of false advertising

Ads from certain prepaid card providers claim that for just a few dollars, buyers can get hundreds or thousands of calling minutes to certain advertised destinations. In reality, a consumer using these special cards could only make phone calls for a fraction of those minutes due to several hidden fees and surcharges. In 2015, the FCC fined six companies $30 million for misleadingly marketing phone cards.

Common complaints related to prepaid phone cards

As prepaid phone cards become more popular, some common complaints are:

Access numbers and/or PINs do not work.

Service or dial-in numbers are always busy.

Card issuers go broke leaving people with useless cards.

Prices are higher than stated or include fees not stated.

Undisclosed “post-call” charges, deducted after a call is completed.

Unspecified “maintenance” charges, deducted after a call or periodically.

Cards will charge you even if your call doesn’t go through.

Poor quality connections.

Cards expire without the knowledge of the buyer.

Charges per call are deducted from the talk time.

What should I do if I have a problem with a prepaid phone card?

First, try calling the customer service number listed on the card. If you cannot reach the card issuer, you can file a complaint with the FCC.

Other problems?

If you have a problem with the local retailer where you purchased the card, try calling or writing to your local consumer bureau or better business bureau or the Attorney General. These phone numbers can often be found on the Blue Pages or government section of your local telephone directory.

Prepaid phone cards are often sold by companies other than the phone company or service provider. If you have concerns about misleading or false advertising or marketing practices, contact the Federal Trade Commission: www.consumer.ftc.gov.

Telecommunications and Expats in Saudi Arabia

The immigrants and expats of Saudi Arabia

The population of Saudi Arabia is estimated at 33.5 million, of which 10 million are expats, making up 30% of the population. The largest expat community in Saudi Arabia is the Syrians. According to Global Media Insight, “nearly 2.5 million Syrians live in Saudi Arabia.” Indians in Saudi Arabia are the second largest expats in the country, while Pakistanis number 1.06 million.

Similar to the United Arab Emirates, most immigrants in Saudi Arabia are economic immigrants seeking a better standard of living. Immigrants and expats in Saudi Arabia live mainly in the capital, Riyadh, as well as in Jeddah, the main urban center in western Saudi Arabia.

Media and internet censorship in Saudi Arabia

Although Saudi Arabia is becoming more progressive and undergoing massive socio-economic reforms, the country is still considered the most conservative Arab state in the world.

There are many websites that are either censored or blocked in Saudi Arabia. Did you know that Saudi law enforcement bans more than 400,000 websites that defy the Kingdom’s laws and views? This includes political, social or religious content. Websites or mobile applications that you may find blocked in Saudi Arabia are: pornography, gambling, news agencies and voice calling apps. Pornography and gambling are prohibited for religious and cultural reasons. This is to be expected since the kingdom’s legal system is based on Sharia, which is derived from the religion of Islam. News outlets such as the leading Israeli newsletter Haaretz are currently blocked for political purposes. Additionally, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIPs) services are also blocked to maintain a monopoly with their national phone provider.

Why are calling apps banned in Saudi Arabia?

VoIP services have actually changed the way people connect and communicate for the better. Unfortunately, many people in Saudi Arabia are struggling to benefit from VoIP services. Since June 2013, the Saudi communications authority has banned VoIP apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Facebook Messenger and Skype. The reason for this ban is to protect the commercial interests of state operators such as STC and Mobily. However, the spokesman for the telecom regulator claims the opposite. He claims that “new regulations were mainly aimed at protecting users’ personal information and blocking content that breaks the laws of the kingdom”.

How do people use messaging apps in Saudi Arabia?

Residents of Saudi Arabia use calling apps with the help of VPNs and proxy servers. VPN or Virtual Private Network is a service that allows you to surf the Internet anonymously by creating a private network over a public Internet connection. VPNs allow users living in countries with heavy internet censorship to choose their own virtual location by changing their IP addresses. Since 2013, residents of Saudi Arabia have been hiding their real IP addresses by borrowing temporary IPs from VPN service providers to make free voice and video calls.

Why VPNs are NOT safe in Saudi Arabia

It’s true that VPNs give you anonymity by creating a private network from a public internet connection. However, that does not mean that they are completely safe to use. Many VPN service providers have access to your real IP address, which means they can easily share your information with third parties and even government agencies. Although the Saudi government has no legal objections to VPNs, it’s best to avoid them for your own safety.

Pen 2 2 shares

Anyone remember having to pay for long distance calls? Thanks to our modern mobile service and unlimited minutes, these charges are largely a thing of the past. But what about free international calls?

Perhaps you have a loved one studying or living abroad, or perhaps they are in the military. Maybe you made a friend on a trip and want to keep in touch.

Or maybe you are planning a trip and want to keep in touch with the people back home. Don’t worry – there are many ways to make free international calls and stay connected miles away!

How to make free international calls

Most free international calls use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. This allows you to call a number while using your internet service.

Here are the best ways to make free international calls, almost all of them use the internet.

1. Skype

Skype is one of the easiest ways to make free international calls. It’s been around since 2003 and used by hundreds of millions of people! Skype is now a division of Microsoft.

To use Skype you can download the mobile app for Android or iPhone, use the desktop app or simply access Skype in your browser, no installation required.

As well as using your phone or computer, you can also access Skype on your tablet, Alexa-enabled device or even your Xbox!

You probably know Skype best for video calls, but it can also be used for audio calls when you don’t want or need to show your face.

If you want to talk to a lot of people at once, set up a group call with Skype and you can talk to up to 100 people at once!

Another advantage of Skype is that you can record your call. This is great when you’re talking to loved ones and want to look back at those fond memories later, or when you need to record an important meeting with international colleagues.

Other features include screen sharing and live subtitles.

International calls between Skype users are free if you both use Skype to access the call. Otherwise, you can pay for a subscription to make calls to international cell phones and landlines.

Tariffs to China, for example, start at just 1.9¢/minute. Unlimited plans are also available. You can also send SMS text messages internationally if you pay for a plan.

Please note that as with all VoIP providers, you cannot make emergency calls with Skype.

2. WhatsApp

WhatsApp is another easy – and popular – way to make free international calls. It is used by more than 2 billion people in over 180 countries!

This company joined the Facebook umbrella in 2014, but continues to operate as a separate app. There is no mention of Facebook at all on their homepage.

It’s another VoIP provider, which means you need internet access on your device to send or receive calls.

Users can connect to WhatsApp using a web browser or a mobile device (Android, iPhone, Mac or Windows PC). The app seamlessly syncs all your chats so you can switch between devices and continue your conversations as needed.

WhatsApp started out primarily for sending and receiving texts, but you can also send photos, videos, and documents through WhatsApp, and make voice or video calls.

You can use the app to connect with other WhatsApp users, but you cannot use it to make calls to non-WhatsApp numbers.

WhatsApp also allows for group chats, where you can share messages, photos, and videos with up to 256 people at a time! Small business owners might be interested in using WhatsApp Business to communicate with customers.

Please note that WhatsApp uses your data when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, so keep an eye on your data usage each month if you don’t have unlimited data.

3. FaceTime

If you’re an Apple user, you’re probably already familiar with FaceTime. This is an app only available for iPhone and iPad devices that allows you to make audio and video calls with other iPhone/iPad users.

And yes, FaceTime allows free international calls too!

FaceTime is built into your Apple device, so you don’t even need to download a separate app. Just select FaceTime as an option when you are on the call. It works like a normal phone call – the phone rings and everything.

I like that you don’t need to set up another account to use FaceTime. It’s really seamless if you’re already using an Apple device.

This app has some nifty features that set it apart from the others on this list. SharePlay lets you watch videos and listen to music together, and share your screen to include your favorite apps in the call.

If your friends don’t have an Apple device, that’s fine—you can still invite them to a call using a web link that they can join from their browser. They can’t FaceTime you, but you can still call them.

Other features include voice isolation to block out ambient noise, portrait mode to blur the background, video effects, and more.

You can even set up a group FaceTime call with up to 32 people at once!

FaceTime works over Wi-Fi and cellular, so keep that in mind if you have limited data on your device.

4. Viber

Viber is another great option for making free international calls and texts. It is used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide to communicate.

Use Viber to make voice and video calls with other Viber users via mobile app or desktop download. The mobile app is available on Google Play Store, App Store and Huawei AppGallery.

If you install the app, other Viber users can find you with just your phone number – no need to create another username or anything.

In addition to voice and video calls, you can also send messages to individuals or groups. Stickers and GIFs enhance conversation and all chats are synced between your devices.

With Viber, you can quickly record voice and instant video messages you send, delete and edit viewed messages within a chat, and even set disappearing messages.

This is another VoIP service, which means you need internet access to make and receive calls.

Only calls between Viber users are free, but if you want to make international calls to a landline or mobile device (no app), you can use the Viber Out service to make cheap calls.

Choose from unlimited minutes to 60 countries for $5.99/month or buy minutes for specific countries on a monthly plan. The most flexible option is to purchase World Credits, which you can use anywhere at your own pace.

5TH LINE

LINE is an app that is huge in Asia but still available worldwide to make free international calls.

A mobile app is available on both the App Store and Google Play Store, or you can opt for a desktop download.

LINE allows you to make short calls (up to 5 minutes) almost anywhere in the world for free after watching a short ad. These calls can be made to cell phones or landlines and the recipient does not need to have the LINE app.

But don’t worry – you can talk longer (still free) if you both use the LINE app. Messenger features let you make voice and video calls and send texts with fun stickers, emojis, and themes.

Again, remember that you need internet access on your device to make the free calls. So keep an eye on your data usage or you’ll end up paying your carrier a big debt.

6. Messenger

Messenger is a widely used app that allows you to make free international calls and send messages anywhere in the world.

You might know this better by its former name, Facebook Messenger, but with the recent Facebook rebranding to Meta, it’s now just Messenger.

Messenger is available as a free mobile app and as a desktop download. With it, you can make audio or video calls with other Messenger users. You can also record and send video or text messages.

With this app you can also watch movies, music videos, TV shows and more with your friends and customize your reactions and conversations with fun emojis and effects.

One downside is that you need a Facebook (or Instagram, Portal, or Oculus) account to access Messenger. If you’re skeptical about having a Facebook account, I get it.

Here’s a tip: You can deactivate—not delete—your Facebook account and keep using Messenger.

Messenger easily syncs with your phone contacts and Facebook friends list, so you’ll be up and running in no time.

As with almost every other option on this list, you will need internet access to make your free calls.

7. Google Voice

Google Voice is an easy way to make free international calls…if you’re just calling Canada. If you want to call another country, you can use Google Voice, but you’ll have to pay a per-minute rate (but still cheap).

One benefit of Google Voice is that it creates a whole new phone number for you for free. You don’t have to share your current cell phone number and you can call any of your Google contacts within the US or Canada.

It’s easy to find calling rates to other countries by country. India, for example, only costs 1¢ per minute for landline calls. You only pay 2¢ per minute to call a Chinese landline or mobile device.

While Google Voice isn’t free, it’s still a good option for cheap international calls.

8. Google Duo

Google users may also be interested in making free international calls with Google Duo. All you need is that both users have a Google account!

It is a free and simple video calling app that works on Android and iPhone devices as well as tablets, computers and smart displays.

Connect with your friends and family on Google Duo for one-on-one calls, or leave a note, video, or voice message for later. You can even start a group video call with up to 32 participants!

If you’re worried about Google Duo using too much mobile data, note that Google Duo will automatically lower your connection to 1 Mbps when you can’t connect to a Wi-Fi network.

9. WeChat

You might not have heard much about WeChat if you’re in the US, but it’s huge in China. It is the world’s largest standalone mobile app with over 1 billion monthly active users.

WeChat is available as a mobile app on the App Store and Google Play, and you can also access it via a web browser. You need a WeChat account to make free calls worldwide.

Besides free video and voice calls, WeChat lets you send messages and share photos and videos like other social media apps.

WeChat’s Sticker Gallery offers a wide variety of fun stickers with designs by artists from around the world to add more fun to your chats.

10. PopTox

With PopTox you can make free international calls to any number – even landlines – without downloading a separate app or setting up an account.

It uses VoIP technology from your web browser (which you access on your computer or smartphone) to make calls. Just go to the website, enter the phone number you want to call and click the “Call” button.

So… what’s the catch? Well, PopTox is limited in the number of calls that can be made in a single day.

If you want unlimited calls, you need to sign up for one of their plans, which start as low as $10/month.

11. VoipBuster and VoipStunt

VoipBuster and VoipStunt are free programs that allow you to make free international calls to many different countries.

In order to use any of these services on your computer, you must either download their software onto your computer or access it directly from your browser (Chrome or Firefox).

If you prefer to make calls from your mobile device, you need to install the MobileVOIP app, available on the App Store, Google Play Store and Microsoft Store.

Please note that calls to selected countries (landlines only) are free, but can call other countries at a very reduced rate.

Of course, you can make in-app calls to any country for free if you’re both using the app. These are voice only calls, not video calls. Also, you cannot send text messages.

Luckily in our always-connected world, there are many ways to make free international calls. All you need is a reliable internet connection via WiFi or a data plan.

Whether you’re communicating within an app or using an app to call a cell phone or landline, it’s easy to stay in touch anywhere in the world.

How do phone cards work internationally?

Similar to making international calls from a landline, you can get better rates by buying international calling cards that work with cell phones. Just dial a local access number, enter the PIN on the card and dial the number following the standard international format.

Making an international call from a cell phone is the most expensive calling option, but it’s not as difficult as it sounds. Many mobile phone services are available for international calls.

For example, if your carrier is Verizon Wireless, you’ll pay 49 cents per minute to call Mexico or $1.49 per minute to call France [source: Verizon Wireless]. Companies like Verizon offer international plans that offer discounted plans for an additional monthly fee.

Similar to international landline calls, you can get better rates by purchasing international calling cards that work with cell phones. Simply dial a local access number, enter the PIN on the card and dial the number in standard international format.

International travelers trying to use their US cell phone in another country face extremely high charges, even when dialing numbers in the local country. That’s because the US phone roams on a foreign cellular network and is billed at international roaming rates.

One way to avoid international roaming charges is to buy an unlocked GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) cell phone. GSM phones are the standard in Europe, but they are harder to find in the United States. Finding an unlocked GSM phone is even more difficult in the United States. Most American GSM phones are “locked” by the carrier, meaning the phone will only work with a service like Verizon [source: The Travel Insider]. With unlocked GSM phones, you can remove the phone’s SIM (Subscriber Information Module) card and replace it with a different SIM card from a different wireless service provider.

There are many websites that offer cell phone unlocking services. The process usually requires you to enter a special code into your phone.

What does this mean for international travelers looking to make local or international calls? If you have an unlocked GSM phone, you can buy a new SIM card for each country you travel and call. If you’re in Germany, you can go to a local cell phone store and buy a $20 SIM card and some prepaid minutes. Insert the German SIM card into your phone and you will now be charged like a local subscriber without having to buy a new phone.

There are even some new international cell phone services like MaxRoam that work like VoIP for cell phones. This is how it works:

You buy a special SIM card from MaxRoam and dial a phone number in the United States, France, England or Ireland for free.

You can also pay for up to 50 other local mobile numbers in over 40 other countries calling your same mobile. So your international friends and colleagues can call you cheaply.

When you dial a number and hit send, the MaxRoam system will find the cheapest way to route the call (over the internet) and call you back a few seconds later once a connection is established.

A service like MaxRoam is essentially an international callback service, which we’ll talk about next.

How to Call United States From Saudi Arabia

While Google Voice isn’t free, it’s still a good option for cheap international calls.

RIYADH: Internet apps for voice and video calls like Skype, Viber and WhatsApp will be unblocked in Saudi Arabia starting next week.

Coordination between the Communications and Information Technology Commission and telecommunications service providers is underway so that everyone can benefit from applications that provide voice and video communications over the Internet, said Abdullah bin Amer Al-Sawahah, Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

He said the cooperating bodies have confirmed their commitment to allow all users to use applications for voice and video calls of the highest quality, provided that all applications are regularly checked.

Al-Sawahah thanked the Communications and Information Technology Commission and telecom companies for developing their technologies in line with the latest trends in the ICT sector and providing the best services to users.

“This fruitful collaboration between the kingdom’s telecom partners is under the umbrella of ‘customer first’, a policy where everyone works to provide all telecom subscribers in the kingdom with the best services that meet their expectations and needs,” he said.

Earlier moves to increase transparency and clarity in the industry include the launch of the quarterly Telecom Providers Index of complaints filed by participants.

Several initiatives will follow in partnership with service providers to improve the industry and customer experience and develop a digital society in line with Vision 2030.

Does Viber work in Saudi Arabia?

RIYADH (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia’s telecom regulator has banned use of the web-based communication application Viber, which is hard for the state to monitor and deprives licensed telecom companies of revenue from international calls and texts.

How to Call United States From Saudi Arabia

RIYADH (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia’s telecoms regulator has banned use of the web-based communications app Viber, which is difficult for the state to monitor and deprives licensed telecom companies of international calling and texting revenue.

“The Viber application has been suspended… and the (regulatory authority) assures that it will take appropriate action against any other application or service if it fails to comply with regulatory requirements and rules applicable in the UK,” according to the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC ) in a statement on its website.

Viber allows subscribers to make free calls, send instant messages, and share files over the Internet. CITC has not explained what regulatory requirements and rules it has broken, but the kingdom seems to be pushing for greater control over cyberspace as internet and smartphone use soars.

Attempts to use Viber on two different smartphones and download it to a computer in Saudi Arabia failed on Wednesday. A message on the Viber website said the service had been banned in Saudi Arabia.

The regulator issued a vaguely worded guideline in March warning that tools like Viber, Whatsapp and Skype violate local laws, without specifying how.

Local media reported at the time that Saudi Arabia’s three main operators, Saudi Telecom Co, Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) and Zain Saudi, were asked to tell CITC whether they were able to monitor or block such applications.

CITC did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday or the earlier announcement in March.

Earlier this year, the Interior Ministry spokesman complained that Islamist militants were using social media to foment unrest. In a separate interview with Reuters, however, he spoke out against stricter controls.

Cellular penetration was 188 percent at the end of 2012, CITC data shows. Saudi now has 15.8 million internet subscribers and the average user watches three times as many online videos per day as their counterparts in the United States, according to YouTube.

Traditional international calling and texting is a lucrative income for telecom operators in Saudi Arabia, which is home to around nine million expatriates. These foreign workers are increasingly using internet-based applications like Viber to communicate with relatives in other countries, analysts say.

Calling Cards: call Saudi Arabia at 8.7¢

Phone cards, which are best for multiple calls, are usually clean and have no hidden fees. These cards are especially good for calling countries with low per minute rates (within Canada, USA, UK, China, European landlines and many more). They are also good for making multiple calls to any other destination. We recommend this type of phone card for most customers.

Phone cards, which are best for a few calls, usually have the lowest rates. However, per-call service charges that apply to each call reduce actual minutes, especially when multiple calls have been made. We only recommend these calling cards if you want to use $2.50 of the credit for 1 or 2 calls ($5 for 3-4, etc.). When used correctly, such calling cards are very efficient and can save up to 95% of the regular call costs for calls to countries with high minute rates. If you’re new to calling cards or unsure whether hidden fee cards will work well for your destination, we recommend choosing a calling card that’s recommended for multiple calls.

No-fee calling cards deliver all advertised minutes and are billed by the minute. We recommend this type of phone card for most customers.

Calling cards with no hidden charges provide all advertised minutes for each call, but if the calling card is used for a large number of calls the total number of minutes provided by the card may be reduced due to certain service charges per call. Please refer to the description of your calling card for details of charges. We recommend these calling cards for all types of calls, but you need to understand the charges and plan your calls accordingly.

For long-distance calls to countries with high per-minute rates, you may get a better deal by using calling cards with “service charges” or other “hidden charges.” These calling cards typically advertise the lowest rates, however the service charges per call significantly reduce the actual number of minutes served. If you’ve never used calling cards or think calling cards with hidden charges don’t work well for your country, we recommend considering calling cards labeled “best for multiple calls.”
