How should I use Monistat 7?

Use exactly as directed on the label or as directed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not take this medicine by mouth. It is only to be used in your vagina.

Wash your hands before and after using Monistat 7.

Insert the tablet, suppository or cream into the vagina using the applicator as directed.

You can use a sanitary napkin to keep the medication from staining your clothes, but don’t use a tampon.

Use this medication for the entire prescribed duration, including during your menstrual period. Your symptoms may improve before the infection has cleared completely. Skipping doses can also increase the risk of another infection resistant to monistat 7.

If the infection has not gone away after stopping therapy, or seems to be getting worse, see your doctor. You may have a different type of infection.

If this medication gets in your eyes, flush with water.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and just take the next scheduled dose. Do not use a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose?

An overdose of Monistat 7 is unlikely. If you suspect a much larger dose than normal has been used or that Monistat 7 has been ingested, contact an emergency room or poison control center.

What should I avoid when using Miconazole vaginally?

Avoid wearing tight-fitting, synthetic clothing (such as pantyhose) that doesn’t allow air to circulate. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of cotton and other natural fibers until the infection has cleared.

Miconazole can damage a condom or diaphragm. Use another form of birth control while using Monistat 7.

Get medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

Conditions treated by Monistat vs. Diflucan

Monistat formulations are intended for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis (vaginal yeast infection) in women who have previously been diagnosed with vaginal yeast infection and who have recurrent symptoms. Monistat is not intended for use by people who have never been diagnosed with a vaginal yeast infection. Women who are having symptoms consistent with vaginal yeast infection for the first time but have never been diagnosed should be evaluated by a doctor first.

Diflucan is also indicated for the treatment of vaginal yeast infections but has a variety of other approved uses including Candida overgrowth in the urinary tract, abdomen, heart, esophagus, oral cavity, blood and bones. Diflucan can also be used to treat fungal infections on the nails and feet. Immunocompromised patients may benefit from prophylactic treatment with Diflucan to prevent fungal infection. A rare condition, cryptococcal meningitis, can also be treated with Diflucan. Is Monistat or Diflucan more effective?

Monistat and Diflucan are both effective treatment options for vaginal yeast infections and have been compared in a number of ways. For some women, vaginal yeast infections can be recurring and annoying, and the simplicity of a one-day treatment option can be what is most appealing. In a study comparing single-dose treatment of Monistat and Diflucan, Diflucan was found to have slightly higher cure rates, confirmed by laboratory testing and symptomatic improvements, although these differences were not statistically significant. More importantly, short-term clinical cure was achieved in 94% of Monistat patients and 100% of Diflucan patients. Therefore, both Monistat and Diflucan are highly effective treatment options for vaginal yeast infections.

One factor that is important in women affected by vaginal yeast infections is how quickly the symptoms resolve. Vaginal tenderness, itching, and odor can be extremely annoying and, if left untreated, interfere with other lifestyle activities. A study published in 2015 compared the time to symptomatic relief of vaginal itching, burning and irritation with local treatment versus a one-day miconazole combination regimen (1200 mg oocyte + topical cream) or systemically using a single dose of fluconazole 150 mg. The results of this study showed that topical treatment with miconazole resulted in relief of at least one symptom in one hour compared to four-hour treatment with systemic fluconazole. In addition, all symptoms were alleviated in four hours with local miconazole treatment compared to 16 hours with systemic fluconazole treatment. The time it takes to achieve symptomatic relief is an important factor in choosing the best course of treatment.

Drug interactions of Monistat vs. Diflucan

Monistat is generally very safe to take with other medications. There is a possibility that intravaginal administration of miconazole products could result in systemic absorption significant enough to impair Coumadin (warfarin) metabolism, resulting in an increase in warfarin plasma levels. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the intravaginal use of miconazole in patients taking warfarin is generally not recommended.

Diflucan is a potent inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 enzyme subtype CYP2C19 and a moderate inhibitor of the subtypes CYP2C9 and CYP3A4. This leads to a multitude of potential drug interactions as these enzymes play an important role in the processing and absorption of many other drugs. Diflucan can interact with blood thinners, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and other commonly used medications. In addition, Diflucan has been associated with an adverse event known as QT prolongation, a serious irregular heart rhythm. When Diflucan is taken with other drugs that cause QT prolongation, their effects can be increased and this effect can be fatal. Drugs whose QT prolonging effects may be increased when taken with Diflucan include amiodarone, astemizole, pimozide, quinidine, quetiapine and erythromycin.

If you are using the vaginal cream, follow the package instructions for filling/using the applicator with the cream. Lie on your back with your knees to your chest. Insert a cream-filled applicator into the vagina as far as possible. Slowly push in the plunger of the applicator to apply the cream. Be sure to insert the correct cream for use in the vagina, not the skin cream for use on the external genital area (vulva).

If you are using the vaginal tablet, you can use either the applicator or your finger to insert the tablet. Unwrap the tablet before use. Follow the package instructions to fill the applicator with the vaginal tablet. Lie on your back with your knees to your chest. Insert the tablet or applicator into the vagina as far as possible. Slowly press the applicator plunger to release the tablet.

If you experience itching/burning on the outside of the vagina (vulva), apply the skin cream to that area, usually twice a day for no more than 7 days. If you are using a product with only the vaginal cream, you can apply a small amount of the vaginal cream to the area.

Apply this medication every day for the entire prescribed time, even if the symptoms disappear after a few days or when your menstrual period begins. If you stop the drug too soon, the yeast infection can return.

Do not use tampons, douches, spermicides, or other vaginal products while using this medication. Unscented sanitary napkins can be used during your menstrual period or to protect your clothing from medication leakage.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve after 3 days or lasts longer than 7 days. Tell your doctor if your infection returns within 2 months. You may need a different or additional medication to treat your condition.

Monistat is the brand name for the drug miconazole, which is commonly used to treat vaginal yeast infections. Some side effects of Monistat include mild vaginal itching, burning, or irritation.

Your vagina and vulva are covered by a mucous membrane, a moist lining made up of a thin layer of skin cells and cells that secrete mucus. The lining of the vaginal area helps protect it from damage by lubricating it and acting as a barrier to germs. However, the mucous membrane of your vaginal area is also very sensitive and can absorb chemicals.

Because this area is so sensitive, you may experience itching or burning from the medication applied to it. These side effects can be caused by the actual drug (active ingredient) or by other substances in the product (excipients).

Although mild vaginal itching, burning, and irritation are listed as side effects of Monistat, some women have reported more intense effects.

If you experience severe vaginal itching, burning, irritation or swelling after using Monistat, you should stop using it and consult your doctor. You can report such a side effect to the U.S. Report to the Food and Drug Administration.

Keep in mind that if you wash or shower your vaginal area to relieve the itching or burning sensation, you are also removing the medication so it cannot treat the yeast infection.

Monistat preparations

Monistat is available as a cream or vaginal suppository. It is inserted directly into your vagina with the included applicator, or spread with your fingertips on the vulva, the skin near the opening of your vagina.

The cream is available as a 2% or 4% preparation.

The suppositories are available in strengths of 100 mg, 200 mg or 1,200 mg.

The duration of treatment with Monistat varies from 1 to 7 days, depending on the strength of the cream or suppository used.

Vaginal yeast infections

Vaginal yeast infections are often caused by a yeast called Candida albicans. About 1 in 5 women have this yeast, which usually lives in their vaginal area without causing any symptoms of infection. Exactly why vaginal yeast infections develop is unclear. They are not transmitted through sexual contact and are not considered a sexually transmitted disease.

You can shower in the morning, but you don’t have to. Monistat 3-day and Monistat 7-day topical treatments for yeast infections (miconazole cream, ointment, ovule or suppository) are inserted into the vagina at bedtime. Does Monistat come as a one day treatment?

Yes, there are two Monistat options for the one-day treatment:

1. The Monistat 1-Day Treatment Combination Pack (with a single egg insert) is designed to adhere to the vaginal walls and stay where it belongs. It can be used at any time of the day or night. It is a higher strength product containing 1,200mg of miconazole in a vaginal insert. Monistat 1 Day Treatment may be a better option if:

You don’t want to wait until bedtime to start treatment

You exercise frequently or are very active

You are traveling and do not want to be treated for several days

2. The pre-filled Monistat 1-Day Treatment Ointment contains 300mg of tioconazole, a different antifungal than found in the other Monistat products. It is also a one day treatment but is inserted for one night before bed. It may be useful if you are sensitive to the effects of miconazole or prefer a one-time overnight treatment.

If you are using the 1 day products you may still want to wear a mini pad or panty liner to protect your clothing if needed.

The Monistat combination packs also contain a 2% topical anti-itch cream with miconazole to be applied to the skin outside the vagina (vulva). Use the external cream twice a day (morning and before bed) as needed for up to 7 days.

Discontinue use and contact your doctor if:

Your symptoms do not improve within 3 days or your symptoms last longer than 7 days. This product may not work or you may have a more serious medical condition.

You get a rash or hives, stomach pain, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or a foul-smelling vaginal discharge.

Do not use an over-the-counter (OTC) vaginal thrush drug like Monistat if you are experiencing symptoms of vaginal discharge, itching, burning, or discomfort for the first time. Contact your doctor to find out the cause of your symptoms.

Can I use Monistat when I’m on my period?

Yes, Monistat can be used during your menstrual period and will not alter the effectiveness of the product. Complete your entire Monistat cycle even if your period starts during treatment.

Do not use tampons during treatment with Monistat as tampons can remove some of the medicine from the vagina. Instead, use deodorant-free pads or pads and change them frequently.

Also, do not use douches, spermicides, condoms, or diaphragms until you have completed treatment and your symptoms have disappeared.

Can I have sex while using Monistat?

Do not have vaginal intercourse while using Monistat. In addition, condoms and diaphragms can become damaged and not prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
