All about mink lashes

Your favorite stars can’t leave their homes without them. The influencers you follow are trying to persuade you to buy with their discount code. What are you? These are false eyelashes made from 100% mink fur. Known for its delicate, natural lash-like properties, mink is the Rolls Royce of artificial lash fibers. They tend to be shinier and silkier than human hair and are therefore highly sought after.

However, mink lashes cost more than you think. Apparently mink eyelashes are obtained from the fur of real mink. Mink are wild animals that belong in their natural habitat. While some mink lashes come from the fur of mink that have been shaved or even killed, many mink lashes will say they are cruelty-free. That’s just not true. According to PETA, mink lashes harvested “only after mink have been brushed,” or collected from them when the hairs fall, are not free from animal testing. Aside from never being cruelty-free, mink lashes are expensive. A set of mink lashes can cost anywhere from $30 and can go up depending on the brand and the number of strands each lash strip contains. Be wary of “real mink” eyelash strips that are sold at retail for less. Usually you don’t get mink fur, but a synthetic version. While we think a synthetic version is better for animals, you don’t know what type of fiber you’re getting, making it a poor option. You always want to be sure you know what fibers your false eyelash strips are made of.

All about silk eyelashes

If you are part of the #nomink team, you should definitely consider silk lashes as the better option. Silk is a synthetic fiber that is processed the most carefully after mink hair fibers. In fact, Korean silk in particular has an incredible amount of shine, remaining silky and delicate, mimicking the beauty of mink lashes but without the cruelty.

As such, they create a highly dramatic look. They are often more uncomfortable on the eyes than mink or silk lashes.

Another disadvantage of synthetic eyelashes is their weight. Synthetic lashes are the heaviest of all, so users sometimes say they’re always aware they’re on or their eyelids feel “heavy” when wearing them. With a great pair of silk lashes, you won’t experience that heavy feeling; The fibers are just too light.

Acrylic lashes work well for users who want a lash set that will last a long time and then be ready to be thrown away. They generally don’t last very long and are incredibly cheap. These types of lashes have been available in drugstores since the 1960s. If you’re looking for a pair of lashes to wear to a costume party or for a single event, these would probably work, although you should keep in mind that the weight of their fibers not only makes them heavier, but also more prone to breaking away from you to loosen natural lash line when worn. Once upon a time, there was a brief (but passionate) love affair with eyelash extensions. I was addicted to waking up with full, fluttering lashes, but not without paying the price (literally). Not only have I spent $75-$100 every other week on touch-up appointments, but the service has resulted in over half my lashes falling out — and those that survived were brittle and broken.

After a month or two of skipping mascara and using an eyelash serum, my eyelashes eventually grew back, but by then I had sworn off eyelash treatments forever. That is until an esthetician told me about keratin lash lifts (often referred to as “lash perms”)—a service that lifts, lengthens, and curls your natural lashes without damage. I skeptically booked an appointment myself at Envious Lashes in New York City and asked the studio’s founder all my burning questions. First, everything you need to know about a keratin lash lift – plus a brutally honest account of my personal experience.

What is a keratin eyelash lift?

A keratin lash lift is a cosmetic service in which an esthetician uses a chemical solution to “lift” and curl your lashes from root to tip. This process allows you to see the full length of the lashes, creating the appearance of longer, fuller, and curled lashes with no extensions – they are 100 percent your natural lashes.

Keratin lash lifts are also commonly referred to as “lash perms,” ​​but these terms are not as interchangeable among lash artists and mainstream studios. That’s because a lash perm technically uses an alkaline solution to curl the lashes into a curled position, while a keratin lash lift uses keratin. Both services tend to produce similar (if not identical) results, but a keratin lash lift should be less damaging than a perm. Your hair, including your lashes, is made up of keratin, which means this formula is designed to help protect the integrity of your lashes during treatment. Most lash salons no longer offer traditional alkaline “perms”. So if you make an appointment for a lash perm, chances are you’ve been booked for a keratin lash lift. During the lifting treatment, most clients also opt for an eyelash color that darkens your eyelashes for a more striking effect.

How is the process?

On average, the entire process, which usually includes eyelash tinting in addition to the lifting, takes between 45 minutes and an hour. Your keratin lash lift will be performed by an esthetician or lash specialist (I had mine done by Tina at Envious Lashes). The exact process varies from site to site, but the steps below explain the basic process of what you can expect. Tip: Be sure to remove your contact lenses before this treatment.

Assessing your lashes: Tina started the process by examining my lashes. She took note of how long they were, how much they curled naturally, and the overall health of the lashes (Did some lashes look cracked? Do my lashes look brittle and prone to damage?). Deciding on a Wand Size: To create the curl, your esthetician essentially “paints” your lashes with the keratin solution onto a small, flexible wand that sits on your eyelid for the duration of the treatment. But first, your esthetician should talk to you about the end result you want so she can determine the best wand size. Tina asked me a few questions, like if I plan to wear mascara every day in addition to my lift, if I like a full curl or a more natural lift, and if I’d like to darken my lashes as well (yes, please). I let her know that I liked a more natural curl, one that I could dramatize with mascara if I wanted to, but one that would look normal if I wasn’t wearing any other makeup that day. Based on my description she chose a larger rod to achieve my desired look. The smaller the wand, the more dramatic your curl will be. Preparing the Eye Contour: After determining the correct size swab for me, my esthetician applied an under-eye gel to my lower lash line to keep my lower lashes out of the way during the process and secured it to each with medical tape Side. She then attached the flexible wand to my upper lash line and told me to close my eyes (your eyes will remain closed for the duration of the treatment and it is extremely important that you do not try to open them). Applying the Keratin Formula: After evenly brushing my lashes onto the wand with a spoolie brush, Tina began applying the keratin lash solution. She used a small brush and painted upwards from root to tip. This part was super relaxing and your beautician should keep checking back with you to make sure you don’t feel uncomfortable. Personally, I almost fell asleep. Let the Formula Set: Once your lashes are “painted” onto the wand, sit for about 10 minutes while your lashes absorb the keratin formula. For most people, this is a 100 percent painless process. Although only a few people feel a (bearable) burning sensation on the lash line during this step. I was fortunate to be someone who experienced sensitivity at this step – more on that later. Applying the tint (optional): If you choose to tint – which I recommend – your esthetician will apply the color the same way she applied the keratin formula (using a small brush and working up from base to tip to brush). Most lash salons, including Envious Lashes, offer a variety of shades to choose from, from natural browns to dramatic blacks. As I have extremely light skin and eyes and wanted a more natural look that could be enhanced with mascara, Tina used a brownish-black shade. The tint sits for about five to 10 minutes before the area is cleaned. Removing the patches and tape: When my tint was done, Tina removed the eye patch and medical tape from my eye area. It’s completely painless. Your esthetician will then gently cleanse the area with water or a gentle makeup remover to remove any residue. Then you will slowly open your eyes and et voila – completely transformed lashes.

Does it hurt?

The short answer: Usually not. “We rarely have clients who complain about stinging,” says Richardson. “It’s important to keep your eyes closed during the procedure and not to get the formula in contact with the eye itself as this could cause a reaction if you open your eyes.” If you read online reviews of keratin eyelash lifts , you’ll find that most people don’t feel any pain at all (although sitting with your eyes closed for up to an hour can be another non-painful type of discomfort).

But with that being said, it turns out I was one of the few people who found the process a bit painful. After the keratin formula was applied and my esthetician allowed it to sink into my lashes (step 5 above), I experienced a burning sensation on the upper lash line and eyelid. It was bearable, but not exactly pleasant either. I liken it to the feeling of accidentally getting a little bit of moisturizer in my eye (the keratin formula wasn’t actually in my eyes, I just have a sensitive lash line). I told my esthetician that I was in pain and she helped soothe the area by cleaning my eyelids with a cool damp cloth, which really helped relieve the pain. My lash line also only felt that stinging sensation for the last two minutes of exposure (that’s about 10 minutes total), so even if you’re experiencing discomfort (which Richardson says is more common in people with fair skin, light eyes, and a history of using a delicate eye area), it doesn’t last long. The most important thing is to speak to your esthetician, who is specially trained in what to do when you feel pain.

A week before your appointment, stop using topical retinoids, chemical peels, spot treatments, harsh cleansers, and facial scrubs around the eye area as these formulas can make your skin more sensitive to the keratin formula. The more sensitive your skin is, the more likely you are to experience a burning sensation during the treatment.

Who is a Candidate for a Keratin Lash Lift?

Almost anyone can have a keratin lash lift, although we recommend getting approval from your dermatologist before scheduling an appointment. Some studios (like Envious Lashes) require your lashes to be a minimum of four millimeters in length to receive the service, a rule that’s only in the name of protecting your lashes.

If you’ve had eyelash extensions before, don’t expect an eyelash lift to deliver the same dramatic, fluttering result. “Lash lifts are great for those who don’t want the maintenance or added volume of extensions,” Richardson says. after all, they are your natural lashes). So if you want the look of fakes, this probably isn’t the service for you.

How long does it take?

Results will vary based on the length and porosity of your lashes, but generally the results of your keratin lash lift will last four to six weeks before your lashes start to droop (and the color starts to fade). I am personally four weeks since my lash lift and have not noticed any difference in curl or tone. My bare lashes now look the same as they did a month ago when I quit Envious Lashes, although I wear mascara when I want a more glamorous look. This is what it looks like:

Aftercare & extending the life of your treatment

Keep them dry for the first 48 hours: this is the golden rule. Don’t get your new lashes wet at all for the first 48 hours after your appointment. That means no mascara, makeup remover, water or cleanser touching your lashes. Avoid Oil-Based Products: Oil breaks down the keratin formula over time, accelerating the deterioration process. Avoid cleansing oils, cleansing balms and facial oils to prolong the life of your eyelash lift. If you wear eye makeup, micellar water is a great oil-free makeup remover. Skip the eyelash curler: While keratin can be good for your lashes, they’ve still been through a lot. You shouldn’t even need an eyelash curler after your appointment (since they’re removed from the keratin formula), but try skipping the eyelash curler even if your curl has started to fall to protect the integrity of your lashes. Try not to touch: the more you touch your lashes, the more the oils from your fingers will break down the keratin formula. It’s tempting to touch your new lashes, but avoid contact at all costs. Side note: this includes mascara (although I still wear mascara over my lash lift if I want to dramatize the result). Research Your Esthetician: “Safety should come first,” says Richardson. “Finding someone certified to apply the lashes is a must. Also, depending on the state, the stylist must be licensed, not just certified.” Do your homework to find a well-rated lash salon and stylist and the outcome will be better, safer, and longer lasting. Use an eyelash serum between appointments: the closer your appointments are, the weaker your eyelashes can become over time. Richardson recommends leaving a 7-8 week buffer between appointments to keep your lashes in optimal condition. To give them a boost before your next lash service, try applying a conditioning lash serum every night for two weeks before your appointment. The costs

In New York City, a keratin lash lift will cost you between $100 and $200. If you pay less, you should be skeptical about your salon. Elsewhere in the country, the service costs about $75 to $150. (And in full transparency, Envious Lashes gifted me my treatment so I could write this story.)

Although the terms are interchangeable among clients, traditional lash “perms” no longer really exist and have been given new life as “keratin lash lifts.” For most people, a keratin lash lift is a quick, painless way to completely transform your lashes in under an hour, making them appear longer, fuller, and curled. Ideally, the procedure should be quick and painless, and leave you with lashes to glamorously flick to your heart’s content. According to Lucy Roberts, esthetician at False Eyelashes, “It will be like waking up with your favorite mascara already on.”

How long does an eyelash lift last? An eyelash lift is not permanent. The effect wears off over time and after a few weeks you might go back to the mascara. With proper care, you can potentially extend the life of your lash lift to 6 weeks. But eyelash lifting is not just eyelash lifting. “How long your lash lift lasts is entirely dependent on how well you prepare and follow up, as well as your natural lash growth cycle,” says Roberts. It can take up to 48 hours for the treatment to kick in, so it’s important to follow the beautician’s care instructions. “It’s important not to wait 48 hours to clean around the eyes or apply makeup to allow the lift to take effect,” says Alexis Parcells, plastic surgeon and founder of SUNNIE. “Also, ask for a cleaning brush to keep the area free of irritants and dust.” Long-Term Eyelash Care Even after the first 48 hours, there are things you can do to make your eyelash lift last as long as possible. The esthetician should provide clear instructions on how to care for your lash lift over the coming weeks, but here are a few general guidelines: Avoid waterproof mascara. Types of Eyelash Lifts There are different types of eyelash lifts. You can expect slightly different durability with each one. With a keratin lash lift, you may find that your lashes last 6 weeks or more. With a Length Volume Lift (LVL) treatment, your lashes can return to normal after just 6 weeks. Yumi or Keratin Lash Lift A Yumi lash lift uses a keratin treatment. Keratin is a protein found naturally in hair and nails, giving them strength and suppleness. “Keratin lash lifts require the use of a semi-permanent curling solution to lift the lash from root to tip,” says Parcells. “However, instead of a wand, a keratin-coated silicone wand is used to achieve the desired effect.” Typically, this wand is left in place for about 8 minutes. Then a serum is used to fix the keratin in place. This process can take around 45 to 60 minutes from start to finish. Length Volume Lift (LVL) Eyelash Lift “An LVL, or length volume lift, causes the lashes to become curled and voluminous from the hair follicle root to the tip,” says Parcells. No keratin is used in this treatment. Instead, a wand is used to apply a lifting balm, a volumizer, and then a toner. This process generally takes about 45 minutes. Parcells adds that some people choose to combine a keratin treatment with an LVL lash lift. “Often these procedures can be combined for a natural, delicate lash look,” says Parcells. What to Expect During the Procedure An eyelash lift should be completely painless with minimal discomfort. During the procedure: The beautician glues your lower lashes together and separates them from the upper lashes. You apply a serum or treatment and essentially sweep the lashes up from the root onto a silicone wand to give them a lifted, lengthened look. You can also apply a volumizer and a tint. We have ALL been there before. You have a sparkling new pair of beautiful eyelash extensions and out of habit have hopped in the shower and steamed them. Or worse, you put your head right under the shower spray and soaked your new lashes!

Don’t stress – this happens all the time.

The most important thing is to make sure you are honest with your lash technician and let them know that the lashes have been in contact with water during the curing process.

Sometimes it’s perfectly fine if the glue has already set and you won’t lose the lashes prematurely – but sometimes the lashes fall out quickly due to something called “shock hardening”.

What the heck is shock healing?

All of this has a science. I could talk all day about eyelash glue and how it works best…but I won’t bore you! I’ll give you a quick overview.

The lash glue used to apply your lashes slowly draws moisture from the air over a 24-hour period to set (set). The glue can dry faster between 4 and 12 hours when using an eyelash nano nebulizer or nebulizer. At The Lash Spa, we always use a water atomizer (basically the next step up from a nano nebulizer) that creates a superfine mist of water — which creates water particles that are so fine they don’t cause the “blooming” effect of glue that makes it white – instead it allows the glue to cure faster with no ill effects.

Don’t panic – they might still survive. Wait and see if the eyelashes fall out prematurely. If they fall out, contact your tech and be honest: “Hey [name], I accidentally took a shower with my eyelash extensions on. During a quiet time this week, could you mend them for me? I’ll gladly pay.” Wait for your technician to reply. If this happens to our customers, we would offer them a discounted appointment during a quiet period as a goodwill gesture
