In overturning the denial of the request for suppression, the court found: “…Once the officer…approached the vehicle on foot and determined that the temporary plaque was valid and had not yet expired, the purpose of the stop was served.” The Trooper’s continued detention of the vehicle to question Mr. McSwain about his vehicle and itinerary and to request his driver’s license and registration went beyond the scope of the underlying justification for the stop.”

The reason why roof racks can lead to increased fuel consumption is because of the additional aerodynamic drag they create. Unless heavy cargo is loaded onto the rack, drag is the only reason for lower fuel efficiency. As you know, air drag is greater the faster you go and the greater the frontal surface area.

It is generally legal by law to leave roof racks on all the time. There aren’t many reasons to take roof racks off the vehicle when not in use, making them a great all-season auto rack option. Constant use can affect wear and tear, which can be mitigated with regular maintenance.
Whether it makes sense for you to always leave a roof rack on your car depends, among other things, on your intended use, vehicle use and maintenance. I’ve left mine fitted for 3 years with no real drawbacks.
You can leave the roof racks on all the time
Barring certain situations, there is no real need to remove roof racks when not in use. This also applies to the most common roof rack types. You can drive with empty roof bike racks, roof boxes and roof luggage baskets.
In my case, it was a very simple cost-benefit calculation. A roof rack helps in many situations, including when transporting bicycles in summer and skis and snowboards in winter. Having a cargo box up there is invaluable when the trunk runs out – which can easily happen even with a large family van. I rarely ride the freeway without my bike, and when I do, it’s usually not for long distances. The influence on fuel consumption is therefore negligible. With infrequent visits to car washes, the deal was sealed for me to leave my trusty Thule roof rack there indefinitely.

Roof racks increase fuel economy (sometimes)
To cut a long story short: Roof racks have a negative impact on fuel consumption. Still, there are nuances in this statement.
The reason roof racks can lead to increased fuel consumption is because of the extra drag they create. Unless heavy cargo is loaded on the rack, drag is the only reason for lower fuel efficiency. As you know, the faster you drive and the larger the frontal area, the greater the drag.
It is therefore recommended to remove empty roof racks for fuel efficiency reasons if you will be driving much of the mileage at high speeds such as on motorways. Conversely, roof racks have virtually no impact on gas mileage when driving at slower speeds, such as in city traffic. The same applies to loaded roof racks. A higher speed corresponds to a greater reduction in fuel consumption.
Of course, roof racks can only have an effect when the car is moving. Which is an odd phrase: If you rarely use your car anyway, this topic is a no-brainer.

Do roof racks wear out with age?
In order to be able to make this decision at all, I consider a durable roof rack to be fundamental. Durable means the roof rack is made from strong, high-quality materials, coated to protect against winter weather and salt, and has been rigorously tested by the manufacturer to withstand all the rigors of the road. In order to be able to easily identify such high-quality manufacturers, I have created a list of well-known roof rack brands.
Anything strapped to the outside of your car is exposed to the elements and normal wear and tear. Roof racks are no exception. If you leave one on a car for any length of time expect a worn coating or brittle rubber feet. A quality roof rack can be serviced for years without compromising performance or safety.

Unless you live where there is snow, if you have a quality rack then you have nothing to worry about. Then the road salt and trash can cause problems if you don’t wash it regularly. Plastic shelves age faster from exposure to sunlight and, in addition to color fading, become weaker. Some sort of outer plastic protection would be good to keep them in good condition.
Do roof racks damage your car?
To answer this question, we need to make an important distinction between roof rack types. The first category attaches to the factory fitted side rails on a car roof which are an integral part of your car. Aftermarket roof racks attach to them, not directly to the roof. So there is neither contact with the roof nor with any part of the actual vehicle chassis. The side rails are attached to the car at two to three contact points and distribute the weight evenly.
So-called “clip tower” roof racks, on the other hand, are completely removable and attach to the side of your car. They have no pre-installed mounting points and mount in car door frames. The weight rests on four rubber feet that stand on the car roof.

They are placed below the rubber seal of the door frame so that they can absorb the safety tension between the door and the roof. This still seals out rain and wind, but the rubber needs to take an unintended shape. Unless it’s brittle, it won’t be damaged. You will likely have a slightly distorted rubber that will take a while to get back into shape when the rack is removed.
The other point of contact is the rubber feet that hold the weight of the roof rack on the car roof. The support on the side of the car is extremely strong, so there is virtually no risk of actually denting the roof.
Can roof racks damage the paint?
We previously clarified that only one type of roof rack makes direct contact with painted surfaces of the car. Since the Cliptower roof racks are not bolted to the car, the smallest of movements are possible, especially with the usual road vibrations while driving. These vibrations alone are not enough to damage the car paint apart from a few small stains.
It is important to note that regular cleaning is highly recommended to remove dirt between the rubber feet and the car roof. First of all, make sure that no dirt is created when installing the roof rack. During normal operation, especially in dusty, rainy or snowy regions, it is to be expected that some dirt will get into cracks.
Over time, road dust gets caught between the beam and the roof, and abrasion marks can appear. Therefore, regularly remove the roof rack to clean underneath, even if it remains installed.
Can a car with roof racks go through a car wash?
The manufacturers expressly point out that the frames must be removed before using an automatic car wash. This is due to the possibility of brushes getting caught in roof racks or their accessories. In the worst case, they damage the basket, pull it off or damage the car wash itself.
I personally had no problem using them with a roof top bike rack or a bike trunk rack. It is possible, although not recommended. Aside from that, the roof rack prevents the brushes from cleaning the area under the rack. Manual cleaning is still necessary to make your car completely spotless.
Depending on your vehicle and rack type, you may find yourself exceeding the maximum height limit for automated car washes.
Roof racks can increase your car insurance
Depending on the insurer, temporarily attached (removable) roof racks can also be considered a vehicle modification. Unfortunately, for some of us, this means we get stuck at yet another hurdle when trying to install an item to make travel life easier.
However, this is highly dependent on the insurance carrier and jurisdiction. On the one hand, every value-enhancing modification also justifies a higher insurance premium to cover possible damage.
Another reason is the safety issues associated with the extra accessories on your roof. Incorrect installation or misuse can cause traffic safety problems for you and others.
That being said, your insurance may already cover some types of modifications, including auto carriers. Unfortunately, a distinction is often made between functional mods. If you’ve decided to match your car’s paintwork to a pineapple, the only things that will raise some eyebrows are going to be some eyebrows, not your insurance rate. When it comes to roof racks, however, it’s not necessarily that simple.

1) Title Transfer and Registration
After you have paid the seller, you can now have the vehicle title overwritten.

The full title includes the signatures of the buyer and seller along with the VIN and current mileage of the vehicle.
Next, you must complete the Vehicle Transaction(s) Application (Form VSD 190). This form can be completed electronically and printed from the Secretary of State’s Electronic Registration and Title System. Alternatively, you can also print out the form at the SOS office and fill it out there.
In addition, you must also obtain and fill out a motor vehicle tax transaction form for individuals (RUT 50 tax form). This special form can be accessed at your local SOS office or at a location with a remittance license (currency exchange, tag agents and other licensed third parties).
2) Fees:
The fee for the title is $95. The registration fee is $101-$114 depending on whether you get regular or vanity plates. You can also transfer your old license plates to your new vehicle for a fee of $25.
Because you bought your vehicle from a private seller, you pay use tax instead of sales tax. Use tax is calculated based on the age and value of the vehicle. In IL it is significantly lower than sales tax.
Once these fees have been paid to your local SOS office or one of the other options mentioned, you will receive your new title, registration and number plates.
3) Temporary Plates
If you are unable to obtain permanent license plates from your local SOS office or local transfer agency, it is advisable to obtain a provisional registration permit as soon as possible. Some law enforcement agencies will give you 24 hours after purchasing the vehicle to obtain license plates. However, it’s best not to take any chances. You can get temporary and permanent license plates from any company with a transmitter license – although they charge a fee for this service, on top of what’s already owed to the Secretary of State.

Doing your laundry is as easy as driving your car to the nearest car wash. Or is it?
Many drivers are confused as to what exactly they can and cannot do when having their car washed.
Before having your car washed, you should consider any modifications, whether intentional or accidental, that have been made to the exterior of your vehicle, including roof racks and bike racks, temporary driver’s licenses, cracked windshields, fresh paint and more. Failure to do so can result in damage to your vehicle or even fines.
In some situations, the staff may deny you entry to the car wash, and why is this happening?
Well, that’s why I wrote this informative article to tell you what exactly the do’s and don’ts are when getting your car washed.
We talk about the different things you can attach to your car when you go to the car wash, what things are allowed in the car wash and what you have to leave at home before driving.
So, be sure to read this article to the end so you know exactly what to do and don’t end up getting confused going to the car wash!
Can you drive through a car wash with a roof rack? A roof rack is essentially a carrier that is installed on the roof of your vehicle and is used to attach gear and equipment or smaller vehicles like bikes to transport them from one point to another.
This frame generally extends over the entire roof of the vehicle.
If you have your car washed, you should not take your roof rack with you.
The reason for this is that when driving through the car wash, the roof rack could block some of the washes, and if you go through a self-service car wash, the overhead brushes could actually damage and damage your roof rack.
Also, cleaning fluids can collect in the roof panels under the roof rack and damage your car’s paintwork.
You cannot clean these parts without first removing the roof rack.
Therefore, it is advisable to remove the roof rack before taking your car to a car wash.
The dismantling process does not take that long and you can completely unload any heavy luggage from the roof rack within 10-15 minutes.
