Easy Ways to Clean Karndean Flooring: 7 Steps (with Pictures)

Whether you have carpet, hardwood, or vinyl floors, they all need regular maintenance. Children, pets, and even the weather can bring a whole host of different inconveniences into your home.

Karndean floors should be swept regularly to keep them fresh and prevent damage, but sometimes it may be necessary to give your floor a little extra care. If this is your first time cleaning your Karndean or vinyl floor, this guide is for you.

Using Flash on Karndean

Flash and other citrus-based cleaning chemicals should not be used on a Karndean floor (or any other vinyl floor). These chemicals can damage the surface, cause discoloration, or simply leave an unpleasant residue that makes the floor dangerously slippery. So don’t be fooled by the “all purpose” label on many citrus floor cleaning products.

You should also avoid using bleach-based cleaning products for the same reason.

When it comes to cleaning Karndean floors, you need to be careful to use cleaning chemicals that are appropriate for use on vinyl floors.

Most of us have a variety of common household cleaning chemicals under the kitchen sink, however many of these are not suitable for use on a Karndian floor.

What can you use to clean Karndean?

Instead of acid- or bleach-based chemicals, it’s best to opt for pH-neutral and fragrance-free chemicals that are specifically formulated for use with vinyl floors.

Whilst Karndean manufactures its own range of cleaning chemicals for its floors, a selection of non-Karndean pH neutral vinyl floor chemicals is also available.

Products specifically designed for vinyl floors, like Rejuvenate Luxury Vinyl Tile Plank Floor Cleaner, are easily available on Amazon. Check the reviews to make sure it’s the right product for your home.

Top tips for cleaning a Karndean floor

The key to success in cleaning a Karndean floor is making sure you have the right chemicals and using them correctly.

Make sure you opt for a pH balanced, gentle cleaning chemical to prevent damage, and ensure there aren’t any nasty residues that will leave the floor dangerously slippery.

As with all floors, you should also ensure that residual water dries off as quickly as possible. Water left behind can quickly stagnate and will find and seep into any gaps you may have between the floor panels.

routine maintenance

When it comes to keeping a Karndean floor clean, you should use a soft brush regularly to remove dirt and debris. You can also use a vacuum if you have one that has the right height setting for hard floors.

As with most flooring, it is recommended that spills be cleaned up as soon as possible to reduce the likelihood of discoloration or damage.

You can also keep your floor looking beautiful for longer by placing mats next to doors to prevent dirt from being dragged into the house.

We do it all the time too and its absolutely fine. Karndean actually sell their own cleaning product which you mix with water to use with a mop. You’ll definitely get more liquid onto the floor with a mop than a steam cleaner, so had no idea that the glue could lift. I use one on my amtico.

Sorry to have to revive what probably qualifies as a zombie thread but was just wondering if those saying they use steam cleaners on a Karndian floor still do it and if it’s still in okay?

About 18 months ago we had Karndean in our kitchen and I use the steam mop happily. Now we are in the process of getting our bathrooms ready and have chosen Karndean again. However, in the store I saw the warning about steam mops so I was obviously concerned. I was wondering if it was just a ploy to get people to use their own product.

Benefits of Karndean

The biggest advantage of Karndean vinyl plank floors is that you can get the natural stone look without maintenance. This type of flooring will not crack, fade or warp over time and does not require regular washing or sealing. You can simply sweep or mop this type of flooring to keep it clean – no special products or equipment are required.

Also, Karndean will likely cost more than natural stone or wood floors, so it might not be the best option if you’re on a tight budget. That being said, the durability and low maintenance of Karndean flooring can save you money in the long run, especially if you have pets or children who tend to scratch natural stone or wood floors.

How durable is Karndean Flooring?

Karndean flooring is highly durable and scratch resistant, making it a good choice for homes with pets or children. Thanks to its excellent durability, it usually outlasts floor coverings such as laminate, vinyl and carpet.

If you’re looking to keep costs down, it’s worth shopping around and checking out Karndean’s different ranges. It’s a good idea to get quotes from at least three different installers before making your decision to ensure you’re paying a fair price.

Karndean is NOT scratch resistant. How well it stands up to wear and tear can depend on its thickness.

I put Karndean up all over my house a little over a year ago by a family business who said they were competent. Three of the rooms had significant problems. I had tried them several times to fix problems but

a) They weren’t as great as they thought they were – they couldn’t sort lift tiles after they were attached;

b) the product really isn’t as good as people think it is. I’ve found that it scratches and punctures much more easily than, for example, Rhino-bottomed vinyl.

In the end I gave up, got a significant discount and bought carpets for 2 of the rooms. Kitchen didn’t make sense. It still annoys me that I effectively wasted over 10,000.

I would avoid this SW London Co. like the plague.

Is Zoflora OK on laminate flooring?

From there, most standard floor cleaning products will be more than up to the task of cleaning a laminate floor. Zoflora is a personal favourite of ours, but everything from your basic Flash liquid to hardwood floor cleaners will do the job nicely.

Easy Ways to Clean Karndean Flooring: 7 Steps (with Pictures)

There is no denying that laminate floors are popular. In fact, it’s become one of the most popular flooring options on the market thanks to its durability and ability to mimic hardwood floors at a fraction of the price. And because it’s water, dirt and scratch resistant, it’s pretty easy to clean too! We are often asked what is the best way to clean laminate floors to ensure you get the most out of your floor without damaging it. That’s why we’ve put together a little guide today on how to make your laminate floor shine again.

Products & Tools

A key to keeping any floor cleaner longer is regular vacuuming. Any vacuum with a head designed for wood floors will do, and this one sucks a lot of dirt and grime out of the crevices, instantly whitening the floor.

From there, most standard floor cleaning products are more than up to the task of cleaning a laminate floor. Zoflora is a personal favorite of ours, but anything from your basic flash liquid to hardwood floor cleaners will get the job done just fine. You can also buy laminate cleaning kits, but these are best kept for more intense stains. Or if you want to go the more natural route, you can even use a solution of white vinegar and hot water. Simply mix a cup of white vinegar with about 4 liters of hot water and you have an all-natural, pet-safe and kid-safe floor cleaner.

But whatever you do, DO NOT polish or wax a laminate floor. We also recommend not to use scouring agents, scouring powder or steel wool. No matter how stubborn the stain, these products have the potential to scrape the protective layer on your floor, leaving you vulnerable to damage. You should also avoid using a steam mop as this will result in a lot of excess moisture which can damage the underlying layers and even cause the laminate to peel off the floor.

Everyday Spills

In general, you should not clean laminate floors too often. Everyday messes or things like dirt from shoes or little feet (and paws) come off easily enough. All you need is a damp microfiber cloth and run over the stain until it’s gone. Then make sure you take a tea towel or some kitchen roll with you and make sure the floor is completely dry before you leave. Avoid using soft bristled brooms or steel wool as these can damage the floor covering.

Intensive cleaning

If dirt has built up on your laminate or you just want to do your big spring cleaning, you may need to do a deep clean. For that, you should invest in a microfiber cloth and mop, as well as a laminate-specific cleaning kit. Follow the directions on the cleaning kit to make a laminate-specific floor cleaner, then use a damp mop to wipe the floor. Use small circular motions and make sure all areas of the bottom are covered – but be careful not to use too much water.

When you’re done, use a dry mop or dishcloth to dry the floor completely. This step is important as excessive moisture is very bad for laminate and can ultimately cause major damage to the lower levels of flooring.

Damaged Areas

If you find that an area of your laminate is torn or damaged, it’s best to avoid cleaning it and the area around it. As we mentioned above, moisture is the killer of laminate floors once it reaches the lower levels. And while the likelihood of water reaching these lower levels is minimal, if there is a rupture or any type of damage, the water can easily penetrate. Instead of trying to clean it, you should try to repair the damaged area instead. Laminate is fairly easy flooring to repair, and if it’s a small scratch or dent, you might be able to repair it yourself. If it’s something more serious, you’ll need to call your local flooring manufacturer to have them help you.

At Floor24 we want you to be able to enjoy your floor covering for as long as possible and look good at the same time. We are happy to advise you on the right cleaning methods for all types of floors we sell and we can even recommend products for the more specific types of floors. If you want to know more or just have a question about cleaning laminate floors, contact the team today.

Can I use Zoflora to mop?

Now your surfaces are clear, you need to prepare the mop bucket for using Zoflora as a floor cleaner and disinfectant. Simply add 1 capful of Zoflora for every 400ml of water into a bucket.

For best results

Soaked mops should never be used on hardwood floors. This is known to cause significant damage. Hardwood floor products that contain ammonia or oil soaps should also be avoided. These ingredients will ruin the urethane finish and cause the hardwood to warp.

For best results, apply the cleaner to your floor with a sprayer or squirt bottle, then quickly wipe the solution with a dry mop or cloth until almost dry. It’s also important to clean up spills immediately and spot clean when needed to extend the life of your floors.

Hello Barbara,

With prolonged use, “Trewax” hardwood floor cleaner successfully removes wax and deposits. This is a natural (not pH neutral) cleaner; with ingredients designed to remove wax, oily deposits and scuff marks.

I recommend using this parquet cleaner several times instead of a pH-neutral cleaner. This allows the wax to slowly dissolve over time for best results.

Please keep me posted. I would love to hear the results!

Pros and Cons of Karndean Flooring

To help you decide if Karndean flooring is right for your home, we have compiled a list of the pros and cons of Karndean. Let’s take a look at the main advantages and disadvantages of this type of flooring.

Karndean is also a good choice if you have pets or children as it is durable and scratch resistant, unlike laminate floors or ceramic tiles. Children and pets cannot harm this type of flooring. You can even put furniture on it and let your kids play around on the furniture without worrying about scratches or dents in the floor.

You’ll also find that Karndean vinyl plank floors feel warm to the touch, making them a great choice for cold apartments, especially when compared to cold ceramic tile. It can also be used with underfloor heating, making it a versatile option suitable for almost any home.

Disadvantages of Karndean

However, there are some downsides to Karndean flooring that you should be aware of. For example, the installation process can be a bit difficult if you are not familiar with installing floors. Unless you hire a professional to install Karndean, it may look uneven or lumpy after installation.

However, Karndean is not as durable as natural stone or tile flooring. So if you’re looking for something that will last for many years, consider one of these other options.

Problems with Karndean flooring

There are a few issues with Karndean flooring that you should be aware of before deciding to install this type of flooring in your home.

First, if you are unfamiliar with installing flooring, you may have trouble installing Karndean flooring yourself. If you get it wrong you could leave a floor that is uneven or even bumpy. For this reason it is recommended that you hire a professional to install Karndean flooring.

It is also important to note that some reviews suggest that the color of Karndean flooring can lighten when exposed to direct sunlight. However, in cases where this has happened, it has taken several years to happen and is only subtle.

Finally, Karndean has a higher price tag than most other floor coverings. Given that Karndean claims its flooring will last over 35 years, which is 10 years longer than the industry standard, the price may well be justified.

Karndean Ground Cost

Karndean flooring costs a little more than vinyl or laminate, but will likely last at least 35 years, which is 10 years longer than the industry standard. If you need a durable floor that doesn’t require regular sealing or cleaning, Karndean might be worth the extra money. But how much should you pay for Karndean flooring?

The price of Karndean flooring depends on the type you choose. The Opus range is usually available at the lowest price, starting at around £20 per square metre, while the patented Korlok range can cost up to £40 per square metre.

For an average room of eight square meters you should expect to pay £500 to £900 to have your Karndean flooring delivered and installed. However, prices will vary depending on the range you choose, the size of your room and the company you choose to install your new flooring.

If you’re looking to keep costs down, it’s worth shopping around and checking out Karndean’s different ranges. It’s a good idea to get quotes from at least three different installers before making your decision to ensure you’re paying a fair price.

Keeping Your Karndean Clean – A Helpful Guide

If you have chosen Karndean flooring for your home, congratulations1. It’s a fantastic product and one of our most popular floor types to install. And of course, once you have it installed and enjoying it in your home, you need to keep it clean. Since Karndean is a special type of flooring, you might think that there are special instructions for keeping it clean – and you would be right. But we promise, it’s not as complicated as it seems. In fact, we’ve put together this little guide to caring for your Karndean flooring once it’s installed in your home.

Home floor care for Karndean floors

Keeping your Karndean floors clean is a wonderfully simple task. Unlike the materials Karndean mimics, this product has no dirt or dirt traps, meaning it doesn’t show dirt as easily and doesn’t spoil over time like traditional flooring. In addition, it is wonderfully inexpensive and environmentally friendly – it does not have to be polished at all and the use of chemicals is therefore minimal. Great for homes with pets or small children crawling around on the floor!

To keep your Karndean looking new, we recommend that you avoid dragging or pushing heavy objects across it, just like you would with any other floor. If you have particularly heavy furniture, adding felt pads to the feet can help distribute the weight and prevent damage over time.

To clean Karndean floors it is recommended to use Karndean’s own cleaning products, which have been specially formulated to sanitize Karndean, remove stains and stains and give it a new shine, all without nasty chemicals. Regular cleaning with this pH neutral cleaner will help keep your floor in top condition, which is why we recommend all our Karndean customers do the same. And the good news is that we actually stock the Karndean Cleanser in-store, so you don’t have to go far to get it or rely on online orders. Just drop by and top up anytime!

Regular cleaning instructions

To clean your Karndean flooring, all you have to do is follow these simple instructions:

Sweep or vacuum to remove loose debris on the surface.

Add 50ml of Karndean Clean (up to 1 notch on the cap) to approximately 8-10 liters of clean, warm water.

Mop the solution all over the floor, making sure to wipe off any excess when you’re done with an area.

Wait for the ground to dry before walking on it.

It is really that easy! Just like cleaning your regular floors, but with a different product. The Karndean Clean will also get rid of any stains or stubborn marks your floor may have picked up, so you don’t have to play around with different products. And it’s so versatile you can use it on all your floors.

What NOT to do

Karndean floors are generally very hard wearing and strong – but there are still rules you need to follow to keep them looking their best. One of those rules is how not to clean it. If you have a Karndian floor, you should definitely not use a steam cleaner on it. Using a steam mop can keep your floor looking clean, but it will also damage the flooring, laminate finishes, and underlying materials. Over time there will be discoloration, peeling coating and eventually the steam will emulsify the glue that was used to attach it meaning your entire floor will start to lift. So that’s our warning to you – if you have a Karndian floor, make sure you don’t put a steam mop anywhere near it. You should also avoid using bleach or cleaning products that contain bleach on your Karndean floor as it will do a lot of damage.

At Floor24 we not only lay floors, we also help you with their maintenance. When you choose your flooring, our experts will walk you through the care instructions to make sure you know how to look after it and keep it looking new for as long as possible. If you have any questions about floor care or Karndean products in particular, get in touch with us today.

Mopping in both directions ensures the floor gets fully coated and shiny.

It might be easiest to freshen up your floor just before night so nobody walks on it for 6 hours.

If you have Karndean Refresh, use it to keep your floor looking extra shiny and protect it from future scuffs and spills. Drizzle a layer of Karndean Refresh onto your floor. You should use about half a bottle, but this will depend on the size of your soil. Mop the floor in one direction, then wait 30 minutes for the floor to dry. Then pour the rest of the bottle of Karndean Refresh onto your floor and sweep the floor the other way. Allow your floor to dry for 6 hours before stepping on it.
