What is black thing in belly button?

A navel stone is sometimes called an omphalolith or umbolith. It is a condition where substances like sebum, or skin oil, hair, dead skin cells, and dirt can accumulate and form a hardball. The stone is usually a dark color and firm to the touch. They may resemble a large blackhead in the opening of the navel.

What’s This Stuff in my Belly Button?

Belly button lint is a fact of life for anyone with an “inner” or concave navel. Regular bathing usually keeps your navel free of lint or other dirt and debris. In very rare cases, dirt, oil, and other debris can get trapped in your navel and turn into a navel stone.

Some navel stones protrude and are easy to see. Others are deep in the navel. You may not know that one is forming. They develop over a long period of time. It can take years for a navel stone to grow big enough to be felt or seen.

A navel stone is also sometimes referred to as an omphalolith or umbololith. It’s a condition where substances like sebum or skin oil, hair, dead skin cells, and dirt can accumulate and form a hardball. The stone is usually dark in color and firm to the touch. They can resemble a large blackhead in the navel opening.

What Causes Navel Stones?

Your navel, or belly button, is the small round spot on your lower abdomen that marks where the umbilical cord was attached before you were born. Navels can be concave (an “innie”) or slightly protruding (an “outie”).‌

Trapped Debris. Concave navels can trap debris such as dirt, lint from clothing, or the natural oils found on your skin. Some belly buttons can be quite deep. This makes them difficult to clean thoroughly. People who are obese, elderly, or disabled may find it difficult to clean their navel.

As dirt builds up, it can start to stick together and form a small, hard ball. Over time, the ball gets bigger and can become visible. Some umbilical stones remain hidden in the skin folds.

Looks. Navel stones are usually dark brown or black. They are also dry and hard to the touch. When doctors examine them under a microscope, they can tell if the stone is made up of dead skin, hair, sebum, or other debris that has collected in the navel.

Navel stones are not usually painful. They can look unsightly, which may make you want to ask a doctor about removing them. If you can’t see it, you might not even know it’s there. Sometimes the stone starts irritating the skin in your navel. This can lead to complaints. You may also notice pain, discharge from the navel, or an unpleasant odor.

Is ear candling real?

Ear candling is an unsafe and unproven practice during which a person inserts a lit candle into their ear. The heat from the candle is supposed to draw earwax and other impurities out of the ear. Proponents of ear candling claim that it can treat a number of conditions, ranging from earwax buildups to cancer.

What’s This Stuff in my Belly Button?

Ear candling is an unsafe and unproven practice in which a person inserts a lit candle into their ear. The heat from the candle is said to pull earwax and other debris out of your ear. Proponents of ear candling claim that it can treat a number of conditions ranging from earwax buildup to cancer. This article explains what ear candling is, whether it’s safe, and the possible side effects of the practice.

What is ear candling? Share on Pinterest Ear candling is not a safe way to remove earwax or other debris from your ear. Ear candling, or “cones,” is an alternative tool that some people use to remove impurities and wax from the inner ear. Ear candles are typically about 10 inches long, hollow, and tapered. One person lights them at their widest end. They usually consist of fabrics saturated with wax or a mixture of fabrics, often paraffin and beeswax. To perform ear candling, a person lies on their side and inserts a candle into their ear. A square or circle of paper, aluminum foil, or plastic usually serves as a cover to prevent hot wax from dripping onto your face, neck, or hair. Once the candle and cover are secure, one person will light the candle for 10-20 minutes. Ear wax does not get into the ear during this process. Other names for ear candling are: ear or ear candling

Thermal or thermo ear therapy

Candle or cone therapy

What are the proposed benefits? Share on Pinterest A person should see a doctor if they or a child has ear problems. There are no scientifically proven benefits of ear candling. However, ear candling manufacturers and practitioners still tout the many benefits of ear candling. Some manufacturers even unsubstantiatedly claim that they help cure cancers. Some of the other suggested benefits of ear candling include: Removal of earwax, bacteria, and other debris from the ear canal

Treatment of sinus infections

Improving hearing or reversing hearing loss

Sore throat relief

Treatment of colds and flu

Relief from headaches and migraines

Improving mental clarity

purification of the blood

Improvement of the lymphatic circulation

Cleaning the eyes and improving vision

Reducing pain associated with jaw pain and TMJ disorders

Relieve stress and tension

Dizziness Reduction Manufacturers and supporters of ear candling claim that the lit candle generates enough heat to create suction. This suction pulls debris and earwax out of the ear canal. However, these claims don’t make much sense, and there is currently no research or evidence that ear candling does what people claim it does. Although many people dislike earwax, it is actually a self-cleaning, moisturizing, and antibacterial substance for the ear canal. People without enough earwax often have dry, itchy ears. Earwax naturally escapes from the ear canal during movements such as chewing or swallowing. Earwax dries up and flakes off on the outside of the ear canal. Earwax can accumulate in the ear canal. This most commonly occurs when a person has dug their finger into their ear and pushed wax deeper into the canal. Anything a person puts in their ear, from cotton swabs to paperclips, can contribute to earwax buildup. Symptoms of an earwax blockage include: Earache or pain

Tinnitus or ringing in the ears

partial hearing loss

discharge from the ears

bad smelling ears

itchy ears

a feeling that the ear is stuffed or full

Is it safe? According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ear candling is not safe. Since early 2010, they have been warning people to stay away from the practice and related products. There are many risks associated with ear candling, and there are no scientifically proven benefits. In a 2016 study, a 16-year-old boy who practiced ear candling for allergies began experiencing ear pain and reduced hearing. A doctor had to remove several candle fragments from his eardrum. The FDA takes the public health threat posed by ear candling seriously. They have also sent warnings to and confiscated products from ear candle manufacturers and retailers, as well as “coning practitioners”.

Risks and Side Effects Share on Pinterest The open flame and melting wax of an ear candle poses a number of health risks. Major health authorities like the FDA have been warning of the dangers of ear candling for several years. Potential risks and side effects include: Burns to the face, neck, eardrum, middle ear, or ear canal from hot wax or ash

make fire

puncture of the eardrum

Blocking the eardrum with candle wax

bleeding

getting secondary infections

experience a temporary hearing loss

Development of otitis externa (swimmer’s ear)

Causing damage to the middle ear. Such risks are greatly increased when children are involved, as they tend to move around during the procedure, which can cause hot wax or ash to fall out of the cover’s protection. Children also have much smaller ear canals than adults. This makes them more prone to constipation. By practicing ear candling instead of seeing a doctor, underlying infections and other medical conditions that require proper treatment can also become worse.

Does ear candling do anything?

The science says no. There’s no scientific evidence that ear candling pulls out debris from the ear canal. Scientific measurements of the ear canals before and after candling show no reduction in earwax. Researchers even found an increase in wax because of the wax deposited by the candles.

What’s This Stuff in my Belly Button?

Ear candles are hollow fabric cones coated with paraffin wax, beeswax, or soy wax. Most ear candles are about a foot long. The pointed end of the candle is placed in your ear. The slightly wider end is illuminated. Proponents of this treatment, called ear candling, claim that the heat generated by the flame causes suction. The suction draws earwax and other debris from the ear canal into the hollow candle. To prepare for the procedure, lie on your side with one ear down. The practitioner inserts the pointed end of the candle into the ear’s hole that faces up and adjusts it to create a seal. You should not perform the procedure on yourself as it can be dangerous. In most cases, some form of circular guard is placed about two-thirds of the way up the candle to catch dripping wax. These are often thin and made of aluminum foil or paper plates. Cautious practitioners cover your head and neck with a towel for more protection. Guidelines also recommend holding the candle straight so drops run down the side rather than into the ear or face. The candle is left burning for about 10 to 15 minutes. During this time, the burned portion of tissue should be trimmed to prevent it from contaminating the hose. The process continues until there is only 3 to 4 inches of candle left. Then the flame is carefully extinguished. If you blow it out while it’s still in your ear, dangerous flaming ash can fly out.

Science Says No There is no scientific evidence that ear candling pulls debris out of the ear canal. Scientific measurements of the ear canals before and after candling show no reduction in earwax. The researchers even found an increase in wax due to the wax deposited from the candles. In a study published in the Iranian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology, scientists noted the experience of a 33-year-old woman who came to an ear clinic for pain in her ear. After doctors examined her, they found a yellowish mass in her ear canal. She mentioned that she recently had ear candling treatment at a massage center. Doctors determined that the mass was candle wax that had dripped into her ear. When they removed it, the woman’s symptoms disappeared. In 2017, the American Academy of Otolaryngology released updated Clinical Practice Guidelines for Earwax Removal stating, “Ear candles or ear cones are NOT a safe option for earwax removal. Research shows that ear candling does NOT create a vacuum to suck earwax out of the ear.”

Risk of Injury While there is no reliable evidence of the benefits of ear candling, there is much evidence of potential risks and harms. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned consumers and healthcare providers against using ear candling because they can cause serious injury, even when used according to directions. The FDA added that they found no valid scientific evidence to support ear candling’s effectiveness. Instead, they’ve received reports from people who have experienced these negative effects from using ear candling: burns

perforated eardrums

Blockages in the ear canal that required surgery Ear candling increases the risk of these injuries: burns to the face, outer ear, eardrum, and inner ear

Burns from starting a fire

Candle wax falling into the ear causing a plug or inner ear damage

damage to the eardrum

Hearing loss Ear candling can be dangerous, especially for young children. The FDA notes that children and babies are at an increased risk of injuries and complications from ear candling.

Is it worth the risk? Although some people go through the process of ear candling without significant injury, the practice takes time and money. There is also a significant long-term risk. Potential complications of candling include: Blockages in the ear canal

perforations of the eardrum

secondary ear canal infections

deafness

Ash covering the eardrum

burns

Frequently Asked Questions Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about ear candling. What comes out of ear candles? Once a candle has burned out, manufacturers claim that the debris inside contains contaminants that have been removed from your ear. However, it is probably a mixture of burnt wax and cloth. These deposits appear when a candle is burned, regardless of whether it was placed in an ear. What are the benefits of ear candling? There are no documented benefits to using ear candling. There’s no evidence they help remove earwax, and research shows they pose a high risk to the sensitive inner ear. Do ear candles help with clogged ears? No, there is no evidence that ear candles have any benefits or help clear the ears.

What’s This Stuff in my Belly Button?

Belly buttons can be filled with a number of things: dirt, sweat, lint, and maybe even some jewelry if you’re into that. But a 2012 study, aptly titled “A Jungle in There: Bacteria in Belly Buttons are Highly Diverse, but Predictable,” found that our abdominal cavities in the On average, they are also home to 67 species of bacteria because they are uniquely less exposed (and washed less frequently) than other areas of skin.

Interestingly, some of these bacteria can be put to good use to make – wait a minute – cheese (which might explain the less-than-pleasant odor emanating from a dirty button). In 2013, biologist Christina Agapacis teamed up with Sissel Tolaas, an installation artist best known for her work with smells, to create 11 cheeses that use the bacteria in your armpits, mouth, toes and belly button.

While using belly button bacteria to make cheese may sound unorthodox, the bacteria typically used in cheese making, such as lactobacilli, are very similar to the bacteria on and in our bodies. By incorporating a process otherwise identical to that of regular cheese, Agapakis and Tolaas cheeses have become almost identical to what you would find at your local market.

But not all of our belly button bacteria can be turned into tasty treats. Some can lead to yeast infections, which can cause itching, redness, and odor. Newborns, for example, can develop yeast infections in their belly buttons after being exposed to their mother’s vaginal yeast during childbirth. Diabetes and excess belly fat can also increase the risk of belly button yeast infection in adults. In general though, as long as you’re anything remotely hygienic, you shouldn’t have to worry about getting anything nasty in your button.

Speaking of hygiene: the tiny pieces of fluff that get stuck in the navel are particularly unhygienic. A chemical analysis of the fabric by chemist Georg Steinhauser revealed that it wasn’t just cotton from your clothes, but also dead skin, grease, sweat and dust. This messy combo most often ends up in your navel because belly hair grows in a circle around it: the hairs act like hooked barbs, channeling the rancid fuzz into your small abdominal cavity.

Luckily, reducing your risk of belly button fever is quite simple: use cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol to wipe away the dirt stuck there, then just wash with soap and water daily. This way you can hide your gum in it without worrying about it getting covered in germs.
