Did you know that 9.2 million people play Candy Crush Saga for three or more hours a day?1 And that’s just 3.4% of those who downloaded the lovable (and frustrating!) puzzle game. Discover King, the developer reveals that there are currently more than 270 million players across the series. In 2018 alone, the Candy Crush series grossed over $1.5 billion. Compare this to Pokémon Go which grossed $800 million or Fortnite’s $455 million on iOS and you see the game is very addicting.2

Both Kaitlyn and I consider ourselves avid Candy Crush players; and some days we might even be one of those 9.2 million (some of you might consider this an “addiction” but we call it a dedication to something we love). For those of you who played, surely you can share with us the ups and downs of trying to complete many levels in a row. From the (sugar) rush you experience when you complete a level to the utter frustration when you run out of lives, playing Candy Crush will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. We’ll happily admit that even at our lowest points, none of us lost a penny on the app. Although we can’t say it didn’t occur to us to spend our life savings just to add another booster to the pile (just another color bomb, please!).

We’re here to share the benefits of Candy Crush when played in moderation. Like everything in your life, the time spent should be balanced and not interfere with your priorities (your spiritual health, family, relationship, school, job, etc.). Assuming we’re all playing at a non-addictive level, what are the mental and social benefits of stealing some colored candy every day?

We believe that games often give the wrong impression that they are a waste of time as well as something that rots a person’s brain. Candy Crush isn’t immune to this cliché. Candy Crush is also beneficial in increasing cognitive behavior, including memorization. Woman’s Health states, “Thirty minutes of mobile gaming a day can exercise the brain regions responsible for problem solving, memory, and spatial recognition.” 4 People sometimes think that apps like Luminosity or Elevate could develop brain training more than handheld games like Candy Crush. However, The Sun found that these apps don’t stimulate your brain any better than Candy Crush. 5 Another article concluded that active video games played for as little as 12 hours increased the reading levels of gamers with dyslexia in the same amount of time as one year of reading development classes. 6 Video games are also known to improve participants’ attention spans, which could then increase their attention spans during class, church, or many other activities.

An interview with Simon Leung

Candy Crush is definitely taking the world by storm, with more than 66 million players worldwide.

But some guys may have reservations about delving into this colorful candy world because they see the game as “girly” and female-dominated.

This is indeed true, as a study by newzoo.com (2013) found. According to this, 60% of candy crushers are women.

But there are actually guys who have fallen prey to the colorful charms of the Candy Crush Saga game.

One of them is award-winning internet entrepreneur and internet keynote speaker Simon Leung, who actually managed to complete every single level of Candy Crush Saga on his Android smartphone.

I spoke to Simon and asked him a few questions about his passion for Candy Crush Saga. Read on to find out why this high-flying internet entrepreneur loves the game.

Would you consider yourself a “typical” Candy Crush player? Why why not?

I’m not really sure what makes a “typical” Candy Crush player, but I’ve noticed that a lot of people tend to play the game on the street, on the MRT, or on the bus, and even with their friends when they should really socialize. If that’s a typical player, then I’m not. I usually play Candy Crush when I’m alone and bored to pass the time – definitely not in public. I then try to be more sociable.

Why did you start playing Candy Crush? What made you keep playing the game?

I originally started playing Candy Crush in the fall of 2012 before it became popular. I stopped when I hit level 35 and it required payment to continue. I continued in Hong Kong in April this year when my sister and brother-in-law asked me to connect the game to my Facebook to give them tickets. At this point I started playing again after finding out that you can request tickets instead of paying to get to the next levels. I kept playing because for me the challenge of completing each level represents the daily challenges we face in life. Sometimes you fail because you made a bad choice or move. If you are persistent and don’t give up, even some of life’s most difficult periods can be overcome in the end.

How long did it take you to complete all levels?

There are currently 365 levels in the Android version. Starting with level 36 in April it took me about two months while playing the game in my spare time to complete all 365 levels. I don’t play it on Facebook but I heard there are about 100 more levels if you play on computer.

Have you spent money on Candy Crush in-app purchases?

No, I never spent money on Candy Crush.

How long did it take you to complete each of these levels?

I don’t remember which were the hardest, but the most time it took me to complete the hardest levels was probably about a day.

Any useful tips for those struggling through the game?

The best tip I can give is quite simply, don’t give up. Each level may have its difficulties, but they are all very passable. Sometimes it depends on luck how your candies are shuffled, but none of them are impossible. Just keep at it and you will get the victory!

What types of levels do you find the most difficult and why?

Every type of stage has its challenges. It all depends on how difficult the stages themselves are. Once you get close to the end, you’ll have to think your way through all the levels. Your challenge isn’t necessarily the type of level, but your patience is important to figure out how to complete each stage.

And what kind of obstacles were the most difficult for you and why?

While each obstacle has its own level of difficulty, I’ll probably vote for the chocolate machines as the most annoying simply because you can’t get rid of them, and they always seem to have a way of covering your planned next step in chocolate!

Now that you’ve finished Candy Crush, what will you be doing in your free time?

Getting back to running my internet marketing business, I may start a few more websites and projects with a few partners. I’ve also been busy with events and travel lately and have a few more countries to visit in the coming weeks. Of course, I could wait for some new levels to be released in the game, but I’d probably prefer to use my time more productively than playing the new Candy Crush levels, at least for the next few months.

In fact, the makers behind the addictive smartphone game have revealed that 115,000 kilometers – that’s 71,458 miles – are being swiped on the app every single day, one swipe at a time.

Here Candy Crush Saga has shared some of the most surprising stats about the game with Daily Mail Online, from the countries where it’s played the most to the most popular times people like to get their candy.

King first published Candy Crush Saga on Facebook in April 2012 and it became an instant success. Within a year of its launch, it had reached 500 million mobile downloads.

The numbers kept growing. Currently, Candy Crush series games (including Candy Crush Soda Saga and Candy Crush Jelly Saga) have been downloaded a total of 2.73 billion times.

It has 70 million Facebook fans and has been downloaded on all seven continents.

And the app doesn’t just sit idle on people’s phones: to date, 1.1 trillion rounds of the game have been played around the world.

Lots of people play daily, swiping their fingers a total of 115,000 kilometers (71,458 miles) each day – which the creators point out is the equivalent of running a total of 2,725 marathons.

While these European countries all have lower numbers, they also have smaller populations. Spain actually played the most rounds per person, followed by France, Great Britain and the USA.

Candy Crush Saga has been played 26 billion rounds in Japan since its release.

But no matter where the game is played, it always seems to be at the same time: in the evening. In the US, UK and Germany, the most popular time is between 8pm and 10pm.

After downloading the game five years ago, the 50-year-old Ocean County, NJ resident told Daily Mail Online that she plays a few times a day when she can and manages to squeeze in games while she runs errands power.

“I wouldn’t say addicted but I really enjoy the game,” she said. “I think it’s so popular because you have a limited number of corners, so you really have to plan how you do it. Who doesn’t love a good challenge?’

While she never sneaked into games when she was supposed to be doing something else, she did keep herself up at night while playing longer than she intended – and she completed all available levels a few times before the gamemakers did more .

She’s also pretty happy that recent updates have introduced a way to skip the end of the level after you’ve already won when the game can still be in play.

“Before this option [was available], it once took over 25 minutes to clear the board on its own!” She said.
