With the right tools, parts, and patience, you can install an exhaust system yourself. This job is fairly easy as long as you use properly fitting replacement parts.

Tip: When purchasing a replacement exhaust system kit, the new hardware, gaskets and hangers are usually included. Be sure to purchase them separately if they don’t.

Step 1: Buy the exhaust. It is recommended that you purchase a bolt-on exhaust for your specific vehicle. You can look for the best deals on either a factory replacement or a high-performance, free-flowing exhaust.

Tip: Most parts are available from a local parts store, online, your local exhaust store, or your automaker’s dealership.

Step 6: Detach from the catalyst. Remove the bolted center section of the muffler from the catalytic converter.

The flange (outer lip) that connects to the catalytic converter end may have two or three bolts attached that will need to be removed. Once the hardware is removed, slide the tubing off the rubber hangers and set aside.

Step 7: Remove the rubber straps. Remove the old rubber brackets from the vehicle and replace them with the new ones.

Step 8: Put on the new rubber brackets. Slide the new center piping onto the new rubber brackets.

Step 9: Slide the new muffler onto the new rubber hangers.

Step 10: Put on the new gasket. Install a new gasket between the catalytic converter and the new exhaust. Use the new hardware to attach this flange together. Tighten hand-tight.

Step 11: Attach the Flange. Locate the flange connecting the center line to the muffler. Install a new gasket and hand-tighten the flange along with the new hardware.

Step 12: Tighten the screws. Adjust the placement of the exhaust system. Tighten the bolts on each flange and make sure the muffler hangs freely on the rubber hangers.

Be careful not to press it against the vehicle frame, fuel tank, or heat shields. The screws should be tightened ¼ to ½ turn past the tight fit.

Tip: If the exhaust is stuck and the hardware is loose, you may need to twist, shake, or twist the pipes to the desired position. Be patient with this.

Step 13: Check your work. While the vehicle is still in the air, start it up and listen for the new exhaust. Check each flange for signs of exhaust leakage. You should also be able to hear a leak, if any.
