Perhaps an off-white would suit your application and if so, it does.

It really is. Victorian house so the rose and bay are lovely. The ceiling is currently painted a deep apricot, which is foul; but forms a contrast to the plaster. I’m worried that if I paint it white everything will look a bit the same… very high ceiling so it’s going to be a real pain in the ass and I don’t want to do it twice if it doesn’t look right. What do you have?

Or if a device meets all the criteria of a box but doesn’t have a cable clamp, don’t use it without a box.

Types of devices that do not require boxes

The first indication that a device is designed for use without a junction box is that it has its own complete housing. And there will generally not be any wire leads sticking out since these wires are contained within a wire connector compartment. Common examples of electrical devices that do not require junction boxes are:

Recessed lights (“can lights”)

ventilation fans for bathrooms

Wall mounted radiators

Fluorescent tube style lights

Many permanently installed devices such as kitchen extractor hoods, dishwashers and water heaters also do not need junction boxes. In these devices, if the electrical wiring is exposed or routed outside of a wall, ceiling or floor cavity, the wiring must be routed in some form of flexible conduit or metal armored cable rather than standard non-metallic (NM) cable. 1. Are you up to the task?

Before you do any electrical work around the house, ask yourself: Do I know what I’m doing?

If the answer is ‘no’ or ‘not entirely’, get a qualified electrician to do the job – electricity can kill, so it’s important to get it done right! If the answer is yes, continue to step two.

Important Note: For your own safety, ensure that all electrical products are installed in accordance with local building codes. If in doubt, or if you are required by law, tell someone who is registered with an electrical equipment self-certification scheme.

2. Turn off the power and isolate the power

You will be working on exposed wiring, so shutting down and isolating power is imperative. When wiring your ceiling rose, make sure no household appliances are in use and make sure no one turns the power back on without your knowledge.

When these checks are complete, turn off all switches on your consumer unit or fuse box. The auxiliary circuits are supplied with electrical energy here.

Then use a voltage tester to verify that the current is isolated. The devices will normally illuminate (e.g. red flash and/or beep) when the circuit is still live.

3. Remove the existing light bulb and ceiling rose

Remove both the existing light bulb and fixture and don’t worry if the wires are left exposed from your ceiling.

The following steps will show you how to successfully start wiring your ceiling canopy.

4. Set your household tester correctly

You’ll need a household meter to determine which of the exposed wires is the switched live wire – the wire that ensures your light is both turned on and off via a switch.

Before testing your cables, you need to make sure your household tester is set to ohms and the beep test mode. If the switched live wire with the red and black alligator clips (or probes) attached is successfully found, the meter will beep.

5. Locate the switched live wire

You then need to find the switched live wire. Ceiling rose wiring consists of three sets of red (or brown) and black (or blue) wires housed in three cords and exposed from your ceiling.

Make sure the household meter is set to beep, and attach the red and black alligator clips (or probes) to each set of red (or brown) and black (or blue) wires. Then move the light switch each time to see if there is a beep, which means you have successfully found the switched live wire.

6. Mark the switched live cable

At this point you will need to mark the switched live wire (the black or blue wire in the kit) so you can screw it into the correct terminal block on your ceiling rose. Either wrap electrical tape or tube around the wire to positively identify it.

7. Screw all wires into the correct terminal blocks

Next, use a screwdriver to screw all of the wires into the correct terminal blocks.

This involves screwing the two neutral wires (black or blue wires) into the neutral block (left block), the three live wires (red or brown wires) into the live block (middle block), and the switched live wire (marked black or blue wire) into the switch block (right block).

There should be two remaining screw compartments that will house the two wires from your lamp socket.

8. Attach your lamp holder and lightbulb

From here you must first assemble your new lamp holder by screwing the neutral wire into the last remaining neutral screw compartment and the live wire into the last remaining live screw compartment. Next you can mount your lightbulb.

9. Turn on the device

Turn the power back on to complete the process – you have successfully wired your canopy light!
