The size of the punching bag is probably the first decision you need to make before buying a punching bag, depending in part on what sport you play. Boxing, Muay Thai or MMA.

The best indication of quality is the guarantee that the manufacturer is willing to give you.

3 to 5 years in a commercial setting (gym use) or up to 8 years (home use) is a good guarantee. This is similar to our Australian made Ringsport Elite punching bags. If the manufacturer only offers 1 or 2 years then it should be a cheap bag and not just for home gym use.

LEATHER

Genuine leather punching bags are always the most expensive. Leather is an expensive material. It increases the price significantly. A quality full-leather punching bag will cost you as much as $500.

Leather is one of the most durable materials for punching bags. These days you don’t see them very often due to the cost and you can buy split leather punching bags quite cheaply, but they are not recommended for commercial gyms.

By “split leather” I mean leather that has been split into slices, making it thinner and weaker in certain areas.

RIP STOP VINYL

The most popular material for the outer shell of a punching bag is ripstop vinyl.

There are different grades of ripstop vinyl material. Some of these are of very high quality and can last for many years in commercial boxing clubs.

I say this because at my boxing club, Premier Boxing Club in Perth, Western Australia, I have a punching bag that is 14 years old and still going strong. It is one of our Australian made Ringsport Elite punching bags.

CANVAS

Canvas bags are the cheapest option you will find as canvas is a cheap material. Cheap canvas won’t stand up to a serious boxer or kickboxer punching it.

Aside from that, you can get good quality canvas punching bags, but they aren’t as nice to hit because the material is a bit sticky when you hit it, they also get more expensive, similar to the ripstop vinyl.

High quality canvas is quite stiff and can take a toll on your legs and gloves when new. It’s probably best to avoid canvas unless you’re buying a cheap punching bag for kids to play with.

WHAT’S IN A BOXBAG?

Anything a punching bag should be filled with cloth or rags. Most imported punching bags are made in Pakistan or India and are filled with shredded rags, which means the rags are put in a machine and shredded into what is essentially a fluffy cloth, and then with the help of a machine, bagged to compact the material. This shredded material is very light and needs to be compacted to get the bag’s density nice and strong, but not hard.

These bags usually have some small sandbags added to add weight as the shredded rags are very light. The sandbags are approximately 15cm x 15cm and 5cm thick and are placed in the center line of the bag; one low and one high, in the pocket.

This works well if the sandbags are well placed and wrapped so they don’t move over time. If they move and land close to the edge of the bag, they create dangerous hard spots that can injure your hands.

I know of some punching bags that are filled with shredded rubber or sawdust, straight or mixed with cloth.

No matter how you mix these products in a punching bag, it always ends up at the bottom of the punching bag, creating a very hard punching bag that you shouldn’t hit with your fists.

Filled or unfilled punching bags?

Most punching bags you buy will come filled but due to the shipping costs in Australia people can choose to buy them unfilled which saves a lot on shipping for heavier bags. The only problem with this is that it takes a lot of rag to fill a 1.8m x 38cm punching bag and rags, while you might think it’s just rags, if you think it’s cheap, still think think about it, you can pay $5 per kg if you need to buy it and a 1.8m bag weigh about 50kg multiplied by $5 and it costs more than the bag.

You may be able to get a rag at Good Sammy’s or other used clothing resellers who throw away donations they can’t sell. It may not be easy to find. In the perfect world, the rags should be cut into small pieces to give the filling an even consistency and the bag a smooth appearance, and that’s a tall order. Just throwing in t-shirts, shorts, and sweaters will get denser and softer stains in your bag.

CUSTOMIZED BOXING BAGS

If you need extra weight or density and can’t get it into an off the shelf punching bag, one way to achieve this is to add heavier materials, such as denim, to the punching bag. Wrecking Ball punching bags are a great addition to a boxing gym as they are very versatile and are great for working on all punches especially upper cuts and hooks. Upper cut and wrecking balls are especially good for moving and pulling in with lead body shots and angled moves in body shots that all boxers need to work on. Upper cut bags are a small, lighter bag and the wrecking ball is a fairly heavy bag, both can be used for the same style of boxing that involves a lot of body punches and upper cuts.

WALL MOUNTED BAGS

The wall mounted bag was originally designed to be mounted to a pole or railway sleeper which was placed in the ground with the top of the pole above the bag at head height for Thai fighters to hold on to while kneeling.

Nowadays, the wall pocket is designed for hooks and upper cuts. Wall mount bags are ideal for people who want to work on boxing combinations that involve uppercuts.

If you’re looking to set up a home boxing gym, the wall-mounted bag is considered an “extra.” It’s typically used as extra gear and shouldn’t be the main bag you have at home.

FREE-STANDING BOXER BAGS

The other option for people who don’t have much space is a free standing punching bag, these bags have a built in water fillable bottom and can be placed almost anywhere. The movement of these bags isn’t as free as a hanging punching bag, but where your options are limited these bags will get the job done. This freestanding punching bag from Ringsport is very durable and can withstand some very heavy hits from big guys.

HOW TO HANG A PUNCHING BAG

USE WALL FRAME

Punching bag wall frames are fairly easy to find at most sporting goods stores but they are usually kits which makes shipping easier but does not make for a strong and stable punching bag frame. It’s best to get a fully welded wall frame with 8-10mm thick wall bars with at least 4 wall holes and two mounting rods so you have 8 holes to drill in the wall.

The eye bolt is the first place to wear, so it’s best if you use a stainless steel eye bolt. This is the first part that needs to be replaced.

If your punching bag is heavier than 30 kg, it is best to contact a specialist boxing retailer. The ideal hanging height should be 2.5m to the highest hanging point, leaving enough room to attach a snap hook or two and a swivel.

The straps on a punching bag are usually about 30cm from the punching bag.

Remember, the longer the distance from the top of the frame to the punching bag, the more likely the bag will swing.

Punching bag swings have a lot to do with how the punching bag is hit. You will find that punching bags hit by beginners will swing more and more.

When you hit a punching bag, you need to unleash the power without pushing the bag.

FIXING THE FRAME TO THE WALL

Your wall mount is very important because a punching bag wall frame is only as strong as its mount to the wall.

If you have a brick wall, I advise you not to use Dyna screws or metal fasteners that expand when you tighten the screws. There is a good chance the brick will break when the screws are tightened.

It is best to use heavy-duty plastic plugs with a diameter of 10-12mm and 10mm bolts.

Another thing is don’t drill too close to the ceiling because as you get closer to the top of the wall there may only be 1 or 2 bricks over the holes to support the frame which may not be enough.

I’ve seen walls that needed to be repaired with a bricklayer, and then with a plasterer. You can imagine what that would cost. If you can find something to hang the bag on, ideally with rope, hang it that way as it will save you time, money and any chance of damaging walls.

WHIRL

I think punching bag swivels are essential. They contribute to a more even wear of the outer material of your punching bag. And they put less stress on the sack while it’s being hit.

Swivels also help with wear and tear on the hardware holding the bag; the snap hooks, wall frame and D-clamps if used and they help muffle the sound.

All the punching bags at my boxing club have springs and swivels that hold them in place. It is best to use stainless steel swivels, which wear out much more slowly than mild steel swivels.

FEATHER

Bouncy punching bags, while not essential, are a luxury and worth having not so much for a kickbag as for a punching bag, they give the bag a softer feel when punched and take some of the shock of the punch . It might not seem like much at the time, but you’ll notice it after a long lap. A punching bag spring is ideal to be placed between the punching bag and its attachment, it makes the punching bag hit better by allowing it to take part of the punch instead of your hand. It also helps the bag carry better by absorbing the shocks absorbed by the spring. The only problem is that it’s difficult to get a punching bag frame that will hold a punching bag over 40kg.

EYEBOLTS

If you use punching bag eyebolts to attach your punching bags to metal frames such as B. I-beams or steel structures you may have in place, make sure they are stainless steel.

What height and weight should I choose?

After choosing the type you want, all you have to do is choose the right weight and size. A punching bag should weigh half your own weight (i.e. if you weigh 90kg, the ideal weight of your punching bag is 45kg). This is the ratio used in fitness boxing. The more experienced or professional boxers should look for pockets that make up about 80% of their weight. For absolute beginners, bags under 35 kg are best.

Tip: Beginners are recommended to use an inflatable punching bag. This allows you to increase the weight of the bag as you gain experience.

Another important factor is the height of the punching bag. A height between 80 – 120 cm is sufficient for regular training. If you also plan kick training, the punching bag should be higher than 120 cm, ideally over 150 cm.

Warning: It is not recommended to regulate the height of the hanging punching bags with another chain. The length of the chain that every punching bag is equipped with is adjusted in such a way that the ideal boxing properties of the punching bag are retained. How to Hang a Punching Bag

There are many types and styles of punching bags, each with their own designs, shapes, weights and materials used.

In this article we will look at the different types of punching bags and weight of punching bags in general and determine exactly what is right for you and your training needs.

What is a punching bag?

Punching bags are usually (real or fake) leather bags filled with some type of stuffing used for punching as a training tool. The resistance of the punching bag depends on the weight and the filling density of the punching bag.

There are many different types of punching bags in terms of shape, size and weight. So we will look at them to understand the difference between the different options.

Standard bags are usually between 28 and 32 cm wide, which is considered the average size of a punching bag. They are generally relatively light due to their filling, which is typically made of material.

Difficult

Heavy bags are the most common and have many variations. Heavy punching bags have either a sand or sawdust filling. They can be 38 to 40 cm in diameter.

Does size matter?

Size must be considered, but in two areas; weight and length. These two elements of punching bag alignment will determine your best option based on your weight and training needs.

The bag should be about half the size to have the right fit for you.

If you compare this to how it should be when you adjust the weight compared to the personally recommended bag weight, you get the following;

If you want to train precision, you need to look for something lighter in the 25-40 pound range.

If you want to train resistance, you need to use the standard of your weight divided by two, which will tell you what weight of punching bag is required for your training needs.

Why does weight matter?

If you ignore the weight of the bag you buy or already use, you may not be aware of the impact your workout is having on you. On the other hand, if you pick and use the wrong weight, you’ll end up with a workout that doesn’t result in a great technique build.

Worse than not exercising properly, you also allow accidents to happen. Using a bag less than half your body weight will make it easier for it to move when you hit it. This opens up the possibility of it going rogue and hitting things it shouldn’t.

Suppose the bag is too heavy. In this case you will not be able to defend yourself against the bag and over time you risk injuring yourself by damaging your hands and muscles.

Why is length important?

A longer bag is not absolutely necessary. However, a longer length punching bag provides a more prominent area for movement and combination attacks, which some people prefer.

Types of punching bags

There are many types of punching bags out there. While they all fall back to a primary classification of heavyweight or lightweight, they look different in shape and size and in the way they are presented.

Freestanding punching bag

Freestanding punching bags have stands to which they are permanently weighted instead of hanging. In addition, the base of a freestanding punching bag is usually filled with sand or water to ensure it is sufficiently held down.

Outside of a gym, freestanding bags are great for homes with limited space as they can be used and put in the corner when not in use. The only common problem with freestanding punching bags is that their orientation means they aren’t very heavy and can easily be knocked to the ground without offering a swinging motion like hanging bags.

Rod pockets are some of the most intense pockets out there. For example, the most common pole pocket weighs 300 pounds and is 23 inches wide. An unfortunate aspect of pole bags is that they have been known to settle over time, meaning the filling will sink to the bottom leaving it a bit thicker and heavier at the base than it is consistently.

Pole punching bags are so heavy that you really shouldn’t hang them up. Instead, a bar punching bag must be attached to vertical bars from above so that it does not slip and lose its shape through use.

If you want to practice low kicks, powerful level change combos, hard kicks and punches, this might be the bag for you. One downside that the bar has attached to it, however, is the fact that once it’s mounted you can’t move it around without a lot of effort.

Heavy bag

Punching bags are the most commonly available punching bags. They are mainly used for kickboxing, boxing, muay thai and other martial arts. Generally, a heavy bag is 4 to 5 feet tall and weighs quite a bit to earn the name “heavy bags”.

Heavy bags are versatile and ideal for technique training such as elbows, kicks, hooks, straight punches, etc.

banana bag

The creative name “banana” is a long punching bag that is thin and usually not very heavy. When suspended, banana punching bags often touch or float very slightly above the ground. This makes them ideal for low kicks.

If you want to practice and refine some level-changing combos and are looking for a punching bag that imitates an opponent, then a banana punching bag is the right choice for you. However, if your main goal is boxing, the banana may not be a suitable choice due to its limited swing.

angled

Angular punching bags are wider at the top than at the bottom. The angle is often imperceptible, but some versions of an angled punching bag make that angle very apparent.

The top of an angled pocket is great for straight punches, uppercuts and hooks, while the bottom is best for kicks and body hooks. Overall, angled bags are great for box-based combos as they allow you to train with easier shots than you could with a regular heavy bag.

Heavy drop-shaped punching bag

Teardrop punching bags are thin at the top and widen as they go down before rounding out at the bottom and forming the shape of a teardrop. A wider bag means a heavier bag. So if you use a slim teardrop bag you will find that it swings better when training and working on head movements and dodges.

Thanks to its many angles, a teardrop can cover many bases. Moves such as uppercuts, overhand punches, elbow use, etc. are possible with teardrop punching bags. You can kick wider tears, but it depends on the punching bag being the right height and size.

Wrecking Ball Bag

Wrecking ball punching bags are the more popular version of the so-called uppercut bag. They look similar to teardrop punching bags, except they’re more rounded, like a wrecking ball. Another big difference between the two is that a wrecking ball punching bag is heavier, thicker and doesn’t swing as much.

If you intend to kick a lot, you should probably steer clear of the wrecking ball as your punching bag choice.

Uppercut pocket

An uppercut bag is a punching bag that is either held in place by someone while punching or mounted on a wall. These square pockets are great for learning and practicing fast combos, hooks, uppercuts, straight punches and body punches.

A major downside to uppercut bags is that when mounted on a wall, they don’t offer much in the way of options. Also, it’s going to hurt like hell if you miss.

A double-ended bag is also known as a floor-to-ceiling bag, just to give you an idea of ​​how long these bags really are. Despite being large, they are relatively light and small, and with adjustable ropes, the way it swings can be either small or large.

A double ended bag lends itself to rhythm and speed training, allowing the user to move around and deliver good punches to the bag. Thanks to the speed at which the double sack comes back at you, it can be handy to practice blocking and dodging before counterattacking.

The above bags would be categorized as heavy bags and they are the most popular, with what I would call lighter bags being popular with kids, teens and mechanics. The price is a lot cheaper for the narrower punching bags.

If you are looking for a punching bag that will only be used for punching then a reasonable indicator of the weight of the punching bag should be around 40-50% of your body weight 40kg would be about right for a single bag at home. It’s not a big problem as all boxers can use heavy and lighter bags for general training, in fact it’s good practice to engage in. Lighter bags for working on speed and accuracy and the heavier bags for strength and conditioning.

TECHNICAL DATA OF THE BOX BENCHES

EXTERIOR MATERIALS USED

Punching bags come in many different materials, you have many different synthetic materials that your punching bag can be made of, some are very good, some are not very good at all. Price can be a good indication of quality, but not always, especially when it’s a brand name sold in a sporting goods store.

The best indication of quality is the guarantee that the manufacturer is willing to give you.

3 to 5 years in a commercial setting (gym use) or up to 8 years (home use) is a good guarantee. This is similar to our Australian made Ringsport Elite punching bags. If the manufacturer only offers 1 or 2 years then it should be a cheap bag and not just for home gym use.

LEATHER

Genuine leather punching bags are always the most expensive. Leather is an expensive material. It increases the price significantly. A quality full-leather punching bag will cost you as much as $500.

Leather is one of the most durable materials for punching bags. These days you don’t see them very often due to the cost and you can buy split leather punching bags quite cheaply, but they are not recommended for commercial gyms.

By “split leather” I mean leather that has been split into slices, making it thinner and weaker in certain areas.

RIP STOP VINYL

The most popular material for the outer shell of a punching bag is ripstop vinyl.

There are different grades of ripstop vinyl material. Some of these are of very high quality and can last for many years in commercial boxing clubs.

I say this because at my boxing club, Premier Boxing Club in Perth, Western Australia, I have a punching bag that is 14 years old and still going strong. It is one of our Australian made Ringsport Elite punching bags.

CANVAS

Canvas bags are the cheapest option you will find as canvas is a cheap material. Cheap canvas won’t stand up to a serious boxer or kickboxer punching it.

Aside from that, you can get good quality canvas punching bags, but they aren’t as nice to hit because the material is a bit sticky when you hit it, they also get more expensive, similar to the ripstop vinyl.

High quality canvas is quite stiff and can take a toll on your legs and gloves when new. It’s probably best to avoid canvas unless you’re buying a cheap punching bag for kids to play with.

WHAT’S IN A BOXBAG?

Anything a punching bag should be filled with cloth or rags. Most imported punching bags are made in Pakistan or India and are filled with shredded rags, which means the rags are put in a machine and shredded into what is essentially a fluffy cloth, and then with the help of a machine, bagged to compact the material. This shredded material is very light and needs to be compacted to get the bag’s density nice and strong, but not hard.

These bags usually have some small sandbags added to add weight as the shredded rags are very light. The sandbags are approximately 15cm x 15cm and 5cm thick and are placed in the center line of the bag; one low and one high, in the pocket.

This works well if the sandbags are well placed and wrapped so they don’t move over time. If they move and land close to the edge of the bag, they create dangerous hard spots that can injure your hands.

I know of some punching bags that are filled with shredded rubber or sawdust, straight or mixed with cloth.

No matter how you mix these products in a punching bag, it always ends up at the bottom of the punching bag, creating a very hard punching bag that you shouldn’t hit with your fists.

Filled or unfilled punching bags?

Most punching bags you buy will come filled but due to the shipping costs in Australia people can choose to buy them unfilled which saves a lot on shipping for heavier bags. Upper cut and wrecking balls are especially good for moving and pulling in with lead body shots and angled moves in body shots that all boxers need to work on. Upper cut bags are a small, lighter bag and the wrecking ball is a fairly heavy bag, both can be used for the same style of boxing that involves a lot of body punches and upper cuts.

WALL MOUNTED BAGS

The wall mounted bag was originally designed to be mounted to a pole or railway sleeper which was placed in the ground with the top of the pole above the bag at head height for Thai fighters to hold on to while kneeling.

The other option for people who don’t have much space is a free standing punching bag, these bags have a built in water fillable bottom and can be placed almost anywhere. The movement of these bags isn’t as free as a hanging punching bag, but where your options are limited these bags will get the job done. HOW TO HANG A PUNCHING BAG

USE WALL FRAME

Punching bag wall frames are fairly easy to find at most sporting goods stores but they are usually kits which makes shipping easier but does not make for a strong and stable punching bag frame. It’s best to get a fully welded wall frame with 8-10mm thick wall bars with at least 4 wall holes and two mounting rods so you have 8 holes to drill in the wall.

The eye bolt is the first place to wear, so it’s best if you use a stainless steel eye bolt. This is the first part that needs to be replaced.

If your punching bag is heavier than 30 kg, it is best to contact a specialist boxing retailer. The ideal hanging height should be 2.5m to the highest hanging point, leaving enough room to attach a snap hook or two and a swivel.

The straps on a punching bag are usually about 30cm from the punching bag.

Remember, the longer the distance from the top of the frame to the punching bag, the more likely the bag will swing.

Punching bag swings have a lot to do with how the punching bag is hit. You will find that punching bags hit by beginners will swing more and more.

When you hit a punching bag, you need to unleash the power without pushing the bag.

FIXING THE FRAME TO THE WALL

Your wall mount is very important because a punching bag wall frame is only as strong as its mount to the wall.

If you have a brick wall, I advise you not to use Dyna screws or metal fasteners that expand when you tighten the screws. There is a good chance the brick will break when the screws are tightened.

It is best to use heavy-duty plastic plugs with a diameter of 10-12mm and 10mm bolts.

Another thing is don’t drill too close to the ceiling because as you get closer to the top of the wall there may only be 1 or 2 bricks over the holes to support the frame which may not be enough.

I’ve seen walls that needed to be repaired with a bricklayer, and then with a plasterer. You can imagine what that would cost. If you can find something to hang the bag on, ideally with rope, hang it that way as it will save you time, money and any chance of damaging walls.

WHIRL

I think punching bag swivels are essential. They contribute to a more even wear of the outer material of your punching bag. And they put less stress on the sack while it’s being hit.

Swivels also help with wear and tear on the hardware holding the bag; the snap hooks, wall frame and D-clamps if used and they help muffle the sound.

All the punching bags at my boxing club have springs and swivels that hold them in place. It is best to use stainless steel swivels, which wear out much more slowly than mild steel swivels.

FEATHER

Bouncy punching bags, while not essential, are a luxury and worth having not so much for a kickbag as for a punching bag, they give the bag a softer feel when punched and take some of the shock of the punch . It might not seem like much at the time, but you’ll notice it after a long lap. A punching bag spring is ideal to be placed between the punching bag and its attachment, it makes the punching bag hit better by allowing it to take part of the punch instead of your hand. It also helps the bag carry better by absorbing the shocks absorbed by the spring. The only problem is that it’s difficult to get a punching bag frame that will hold a punching bag over 40kg.

EYEBOLTS

If you use punching bag eyebolts to attach your punching bags to metal frames such as B. I-beams or steel structures you may have in place, make sure they are stainless steel.

Stainless steel eyebolts outlast the last unalloyed steel by at least 2 times.

4 Ways To Hang A Punching Bag

Adding a heavy bag to your home gym means you need a convenient hanging space for your workout.

Even if you don’t have a basement or garage, there are still some great ways to hang a punching bag for boxing training at home.

To know how to hang the bag you need to know a few things:

How much does the bag weigh when full?

What kind of ceiling do you have in the area you want to hang it?

You see, heavy bags can be installed in a variety of ways in your home.

You may be able to just hang it from the ceiling joists or use one of those specially designed heavy mounts on the ceiling before you start working on your box shape.

Or if you can’t hang it from the ceiling (either for structural reasons or because you’re a renter rather than a homeowner), you can use one of these freestanding supports.

So let’s look at this in a little more detail to help you decide the best way to go about this so you don’t end up with a big hole in the ceiling.

How much does the punching bag weigh?

To avoid installation mishaps, it’s important to know how much weight you need to support before attempting to hang the heavy bag.

Although punching bags come in a variety of weights, the average home punching bag weighs 70 pounds.

Of course, some models weigh more.

The typical heavy home gym punching bag weighs between 70 pounds and 100 pounds.

If you end up with one of those heavy duty bags like the ones you see in a boxing gym, it’s going to weigh A LOT more.

In fact, commercial heavy sacks weigh about 200 pounds.

Knowing how much the bag weighs is only part of the equation of how much weight to carry.

When you hit that sack, all the force you are exerting and hitting that sack with also has a weight.

In addition, the bag will begin to vibrate, resulting in centrifugal force.

This force can be more than the bag actually weighs.

So your 100 pound sack needs at least 200 pounds of support right now.

Don’t forget that the force of your swing will also cause the sack to move a little in the air and then fall back onto the anchor with its full weight.

This happens every time you hit the bag.

That’s a hell of a load your heavy bag mount has to withstand.

Once you have all of that figured out, it’s time to look at the ways you can hang this bag for your first workout session at home.

Option #1 – Use the ceiling beam to hang the bag

Probably the best way to hang a heavy bag for your home boxing training is to chain it over a ceiling joist.

The ceiling beam supports your ceiling. It’s usually a 2×6 board spaced every 16″, but you may find them further apart and made from different sized boards.

Ideally you will have an open beam to hang the bag on, e.g. B. in your garage or basement.

If it doesn’t, you’ll actually need to find the bar before you can use it.

How to find the beam

Unless you have a textured ceiling like a popcorn ceiling, finding the joist is easy.

All you need is a stud finder.

Start with the stud finder at the edge of a wall and look for the joist 16″ away and if it’s not there try 24″.

Still not found?

You’re probably in line with them, so just try again from the adjacent wall and you should have better luck.

Tip: If you have a textured ceiling, you will need to step over it and do a visual inspection. Look for nail heads driven into wood and you will find the beam.

Once you find the beam to hang the bag on, you need to find the center of the beam.

You can use a thin nail to poke through the ceiling to find the center.

If you’re not really the handyman type, then it’s a good idea to hire a contractor or general handyman to come to your house and help you with that.

It’s better to pay someone else and make sure you have the ceiling joist and its center than end up with a hole in your ceiling.

You may even be able to pay that person to complete the installation for you! Either way, you’ll need at least someone else’s help to complete this.

Installing the hardware to hang the bag

Okay, you’ve found the ceiling joist and located its center.

Now you can install the hardware on this beam so you can mount this pocket and start punching.

According to RDX Sports, you will need the following items:

drilling machine

eyebolt

key

bag and chains

S hook

They suggest you follow the steps below to install this bag and hang it on the ceiling joists.

Drill a hole in the ceiling joist. Thread an eyebolt into the hole and tighten with a wrench. Connect the chain to the bag and then connect the chains to the S hook. With the help of another person, lift the bag and attach the S-hook to the eyebolt. Give the bag a few test hits to see if it’s secure.

It’s a good idea to use an eyebolt instead of hooks in step #2 as the bag can easily slip off the hook during training.

Option #2 – Attach it to the ceiling

If you’re not interested in chaining the heavy punching bag to the ceiling joists using the method above, consider using a ceiling bracket instead.

Punching bag ceiling mounts come with all the hardware you need to install the punching bag in your home.

You just need to find the ceiling joist or support beam to install the bracket.

Tip: The place where the beam meets the support beam is the place with the greatest support for the weight of the bag.

To install the ceiling mount you will need:

drilling machine

screwdriver

key

bag and chains

Here are the basic steps to installing a heavy bag ceiling mount:

Hold the bracket to the ceiling so you can mark where the screws go. Drill holes in the ceiling at the marked locations. Use a screwdriver and/or wrench to secure the bracket in the ceiling. Step 4: Attach the chains to the bag and S hook. With the help of a second person, lift the bag and hang it on the bracket with the S-hook.

Once you have the punching bag in place, you need to test how secure it is in the bracket.

Give the bag a few test hits to see if it’s secure.

Option #3 – Mount it on the wall

If you cannot or do not want to mount the bag from the ceiling then you may prefer to use a wall mount for the heavy bag.

As with the ceiling mount, you have all the hardware you need when you buy one of these mounts.

The most important thing to know here is that you should never wall mount a heavy bag in drywall.

Use this installation method for masonry walls only.

To install the wall mount you will need:

Here are the basic steps to installing a heavy bag wall mount:

Hold the bracket to the wall and mark the position of the screws. Drill holes in the wall at the marked locations. Place the bracket over the holes and install using the included hardware. Option #4 – Use a freestanding stand for heavy bags

If you are a renter or just don’t want to drill holes in the wall or ceiling then your only other option is one of these punching bag stands which is a free standing type of support.

However, you should really consider this option as a last resort as these stands are not always stable.

If you hit the pouch, the stand may wobble and move or even tip over.

To prevent this, you need to weigh down the stand.

Even when weighted, these things can still pose a small security risk.

So if you have other options then by all means go with them instead of this one.

If you choose one of these freestanding punching bag supports, hanging the punching bag is very easy.

Simply attach the chain to the S hook and bag and hang it on the stand.

An even stronger bolted connection can be achieved with a thru-bolt – a machine-threaded eyebolt that you thread all the way through the joist or joist and secure at the top with a washer and nut. You can certainly use a thru-bolt (if the frame is exposed), but it’s really more power than you need.

If you don’t have a suitable ceiling or floor frame above, you can opt for a wall mount where the bag hangs from the end of an extended arm. Find an anchor point to hang a punching bag

Assembling a punching bag in a garage or unfinished basement is a breeze since the joists are exposed and chances are they’re strong enough for the job. Finding suitable anchor points in a finished ceiling or elsewhere can be a bit more difficult. The first thing to determine is the bar size. If there is a floor above the ceiling then you’re good to go as these are floor joists designed to take the load above. If the ceiling is in a closet or under an attic, these can only be ceiling joists, which can be as small as 2 x 4s. A 2 x 4 joist can probably support a heavy pocket, but it might flex enough to crack the drywall or plaster of the ceiling.

Go into the attic and measure the depth (top to bottom) of the joists. If they’re at least 5 1/2 inches (2 x 6s) top to bottom, you’re good to go. If they are smaller, consider anchoring in two adjacent joists using wooden blocks anchored to both joists. The block can be placed on the surface of the drywall or between the joists above the drywall. Mounting hardware is also available that can be anchored to multiple joists.

Another place you can hang a bag is in a wall opening or in a door that doesn’t have a door. These openings are framed at the top with a horizontal bar called a header, which spans two studs to create the open space below. How to hang a punching bag from a beam or beam

Step 1: Mark the Joist Use a joist finder to locate the ceiling joist in a finished ceiling. Mark both side edges of the joist and then mark a drilling point in the middle of the joist. Turn the screw clockwise by hand while pushing up. If it’s too hard to turn by hand, use pliers to turn the bolt, or insert the shaft of a long screwdriver through the eye of the bolt and use it as leverage to turn the bolt. Drive the screw in until the threads are fully buried in the wood. Step 4: Attach the Bag Clip to the eyebolt using a heavy duty carabiner or similar closed connector. This is safer than a simple S hook which can slip out of the bolt. With a helper, lift the punching bag and attach the hanging chains of the punching bag to the carabiner.
