How big is too big?

Chips larger than a quarter and cracks longer than three inches cannot be repaired with a DIY kit and should either be repaired or replaced by a professional glass service such as Glass Doctor. If it’s less than a quarter, windshield chip repair can be a do-it-yourself job. Follow the steps below to fix this chip before it spreads.

Repair of windshield fragments

If it has rained make sure you use a blow dryer to blow any moisture out of the inside of the chip or crack before applying the epoxy.

How to repair a windshield in 10 steps

Peel off the adhesive patch paper backing to reveal one side of the adhesive strip. The chip must not be larger than the circular cutout in the center of this patch. Center the patch over the chip and apply to the clean, dry, outboard side of the windshield glass. Peel off the other side of the paper backing and attach the base – the molded piece of plastic with a tube that slopes upwards – onto the adhesive. Align the tabs for easy removal. Mix your resin if necessary. Pour the liquid resin into the base and fill it all the way to the top. Push your syringe all the way down and insert it firmly into the socket. Hold the base with one hand as you slowly pull the syringe plunger up – don’t worry, this won’t draw the resin up. Continue to pull the syringe plunger until you have reached the end of its working length. Some syringes may have a clip that prevents you from accidentally removing the syringe from the base. Pulling the plunger up creates a vacuum in the syringe that slowly draws the air bubbles out of the resin and off your chip or crack; From inside the car you should notice air bubbles slowly coming out of the chip. Follow the instructions for how long the syringe should sit. We’ve seen some kits take up to 10 minutes, others as fast as 1 minute. However, do not continue until you see no more bubbles. Hold the base with your hand while using the other hand to remove the syringe from the base. Reinsert the syringe. Now slowly push the syringe plunger down to push the resin into the chip or crack. Normally you should stop squeezing about halfway down, wherever the instructions suggest or where the clip stops the syringe. Gently tap the window with your knuckles to release any air bubbles trapped in the chip. If there is a small area in the chip that is not filled, push the syringe down a little further. Just a little (half an inch) or you risk blowing out the adhesive seals (and have to start over). Follow the instructions for how long the syringe should remain in this position. Once the epoxy has set, remove the adhesive patch and base. Don’t wipe anything yet! Grab your tube of resin and put a drop or two directly on the chip/crack. Take your curing strip and place it on the chip/crack with the resin drops. Lay it down at an angle to avoid trapping air bubbles. Gently hold the strip with your fingers while using a razor blade to squeegee out any air bubbles and allow to set for the recommended time. Use a sharp razor blade to scrape the curing strip. Don’t just pull it off! Place your finger on the chip or crack and use a razor blade to loosen the bond between the strip and the glass around the edge of the chip/crack. Finally, twist the strip so you don’t pull resin out of the chip or crack. Use a razor blade to scrape perpendicular to the glass to remove any leftover resin.
