The Origin of Teal
The color teal is believed to have been named for the markings on a freshwater duck in the early 20th century. The color is found on the duck’s head and wings. Eventually, the Eurasian teal duck was named after the color we all know today. The different shades of teal have been popular throughout history. Although ultramarine is the most commonly used blue on the landscape painter’s palette, it cannot produce the distinct shade of blue that Phthalo can, even when mixed with other colors. The problem with phthalo is that it is so intense and potent that even the smallest amount can overwhelm any mix. If you substituted phthalo for ultramarine for most of your blue mixes, your painting would take on a strange, caustic blue-green hue.
Less intense alternatives to traditional phthalo blue
Brand specific blues
Mediterranean blue by Daniel Smith and azure by Sennelier. Mediterranean blue is simply phthalo and white together. Azure is Phthalo and a little Phthalo Green. Straight out of the tube, these two pigments look almost identical to Phthalo when lightened with white. Both of these pigments are still strong, but much less strong than regular Phthalo, so they have less of a chance of overpowering your mixes.
You can reduce the intensity of Phthalo simply by mixing it with some white. In fact, before I discovered Mediterranean blue and Azure, I always added white to Phthalo on my palette. Such a lightening not only makes the color more manageable, but also sets it apart from Ultramarine in the palette, because they look very similar out of the tube.
Other similar blues
Straight out of the tube, manganese blue has about the same mean value as Mediterranean and azure blue. However, it is not as strong as regular Phthalo. This means you can use it without overwhelming your mixes.
Cerulean blue is another pigment that fits into the same “sky blue” blue family as phthalo. Like manganese, it’s much less intense so it won’t overwhelm your mixes.
