The best kettles are energy efficient and have a variety of features to help you use less energy. Most have minimum and maximum level markings and intelligent scale filters, and more models now have variable temperature controls – so you don’t burn tea leaves or coffee grounds – as well as keep-warm and automatic functions to keep your H2O warm but not overheat unnecessarily or the device turn off/on when not in use. But is that enough to keep costs down every time you brew a cup of coffee?

We spoke to the experts who gave us their insights into the price of using a tea kettle and how to use it when trying to reduce your electricity bills and energy use in general.

How much does it cost to boil a kettle in the UK?

“An estimated 95% of UK families boil their kettle at least once a day. 40% of families do this more than five times a day. The exact cost will depend on the size/power rating of your kettle and your electricity bills,” says Matthew Jenkins, energy expert at MyJobQuote (opens in new tab).

“The average 2 liter kettle is rated at 3 kilowatts per hour (kWh), bearing in mind that it never takes a full hour for your kettle to boil! Instead, boiling a kettle for an average of 4 minutes uses 0.225 kWh. As the average cost per unit of electricity is now £0.28, to calculate the cost you need to calculate the following sum:

‘Electricity consumed (in this case 0.225 kWh) x cost of one kWh in pence (0.28)’

“The cost of heating water you recently boiled isn’t as expensive as boiling a new kettle from scratch,” confirms Jenkins.

“It is difficult to calculate the exact cost as it depends on the amount of water in the kettle, how long the water has been chilled and the energy efficiency of your kettle. If you have left your boiled water for more than 10 minutes, it will most likely need to be fully boiled again, which will cost the same amount as before.’

What factors affect how much it costs to boil a kettle?

Ever notice white or off-white shards in your kettle, or worse, floating around in the best travel coffee mug on your way to work? You probably need to clean your kettle. While there are advantages to living in London and the surrounding home areas, hard water is not one of them as limescale is likely to build up faster in these areas.

To ensure your kettle is working in top condition, make sure you know how to properly descale a kettle. This can be done with vinegar if you’re concerned about harsh ingredients in store-bought solutions.

“Limescale build-up in your kettle is a common problem, affecting around 60% of the UK, particularly in the south-east of England,” says Jenkins.

“If there is limescale in your kettle, the kettle uses more energy to heat the water, resulting in higher energy bills. Descaling the kettle means that your kettle uses less energy to heat scale and instead uses that energy to heat water.

“Overfilling your kettle is an unnecessary expense. If you get into the habit of filling your kettle all the way up when you just want a cup or two of tea, that can add up over the year. If you pay attention to how much water you use, you only pay for what you use.”

Thames Water’s top tips for reducing the impact of limescale?

We spoke to Andrew Tucker, Water Efficiency Manager at Thames Water (opens in new tab) who is a fountain of knowledge on all aspects of water. So if you have higher levels of trace minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium in your water, you might want to take advantage of these money-saving suggestions:

Reduce the temperature of your hot water to 60 degrees Celsius

Put a steel scale separator in your kettle

Empty your kettle if you don’t use it for a long time

Is it cheaper to boil a kettle or boil cold water?

“Economically, it costs less to start with hot water than it does to boil cold water,” confirms Jenkins.

“Although you may (understandably) think that using a kettle to boil the water and then placing it on the hob will cost you more, you reduce the time it takes for the water to boil when you add an extra appliance to your kitchen integrate.”

“Even if you put just enough cold water on the right hob, it takes an average of 7 minutes to boil, while boiling in an electric kettle typically takes just 4 minutes.”

Does the kettle use a lot of electricity?

“In general, an electric kettle isn’t the biggest electricity expense in your kitchen, and if you use it properly, it’s relatively inexpensive to use,” says Jenkins.

In fact, using a kettle to boil water is 80% efficient as long as you make sure you’re boiling exactly the amount of water you need and try not to leave it plugged in when not in use, then the kettle is a practical device.’

“To make sure you don’t use too much energy, you should buy a new and energy-efficient kettle. Some older kettles have inadequate insulation, meaning they take longer to boil and don’t stay warm long enough – resulting in the need for re-boiling. However, energy-efficient boilers can keep the water warm longer.”

Is it cheaper to boil water on a gas stove or kettle?

“With gas being cheaper than electricity (the average cost after the price cap increase is now £0.07), it might be worth going back to basics and boiling water on the stove,” Jenkins advises.

“If you do decide to try this out, though, you need to make sure you’re only boiling exactly the amount of water you need, in the right sized pot and on the right sized stovetop. For example, if you bring a small pot of water to a boil over a large flame, your water will boil no faster and will cost more than using a smaller kettle.”

Do Instant Boil Taps save money and energy?

However, according to Andy Smale, an energy consultant at Expert Energy, the difference in savings is quite small. He claims that hot faucets use a little bit of energy to keep the water hot continuously. However, this can cost more than boiling a kettle a few times a day. Boiling water with a kettle for two small cups of tea (250ml) six times a day costs 5.46p a day. The total would be 38p per week. This is based on the assumption that when boiling, a kettle typically contains 500ml of water.

On the other hand, Hot Taps cost around 5.27p per day and a total of 37p per week. So the difference in savings is just 1p a week and around £25 a year. Even though using a hot tap is slightly cheaper, it would take many years for the savings to be significant. The reason for this is the high acquisition and maintenance costs.

A major benefit of pressure cooker faucets is that they help conserve water. This advantage is due to the fact that the taps only deliver what is needed. According to Stephen Johnson, hot water faucets can save around 100 liters of water a year. On the other hand, about 67% of kettle owners overfill their kettles, boil them again and end up wasting the water. The wasted water is equivalent to approximately 3,500 tons.

According to Andy Smale, the way kettles are designed causes them to waste energy. Boiling over and heat loss through the kettle body can result in a loss of over 25% of the energy used. Additionally, the minimum amount of water a kettle will hold when brought to a boil is 500ml. So this would result in boiling twice the amount of water needed to brew a small cup of tea.

However, Quooker taps are designed to reduce heat loss due to their vacuum insulation. They do not boil water again or boil over. But if they are left on continuously, the heat loss is almost the same as that of a kettle. It would therefore help to save energy if you turn off your Quooker tap when it is not needed, e.g. B. at night. It would also help improve the overall efficiency of the tap.

In summary, buying an instant boiling faucet won’t drastically reduce your electricity bills. However, it is very convenient.

Installation is not included in the price for all boiling water faucets. While you can install them yourself, it’s not necessarily easy, so you may need to consider the cost of a plumber.

The tap and tank also need to be cleaned from time to time to keep them free of limescale. Most models also require regular replacement filters, which can significantly increase running costs.

Is a boiling water tap cheaper to operate than a kettle?

You’d expect anything that can keep water at the boiling point to be expensive to run, but if leading brands like Quooker, Grohe and Franke are to be believed, hot water faucets can be more economical than your average kettle.

Quooker says its taps cost 3p a day if left on standby. The cost of boiling a liter of water in a kettle is just over 2p. So if you boil your kettle several times a day – for example in the morning, again after work and before bed, then you will save on energy costs.

However, the high initial cost of hot water faucets means it will take you more than a lifetime to recoup your investment. We did the math and compared the initial and ongoing energy costs with our cheapest Best Buy kettle

Quooker boiling water taps

How much do Quookers cost?

Quooker prices start at £950 for the Nordic Round model and go up to £1,890. It costs more if you want a different finish or tank, but installation is free.

Tap Options

You can choose between a separate boiling water tap with associated mixer tap, or the Quooker Flex or Fusion models, which have a single tap for hot, cold and boiling water. All have built-in filters. The Flex has an extendable flexible hose to reach beyond the sink to fill things up.

Quooker tanks come in 3 liter, 7 liter and 11 liter sizes. There is also a combi tank that can be used to provide instant hot (50-60°C) water as well as boiling water.

Maintenance costs and replacement filters

A filter is built into the hot water tank, which can last up to five years. If you live in a hard water area you can also add a scale control unit for £245. Replacement filters for the lime unit cost £90 and need to be replaced every 24 months.

As for the filter in the tank itself, you can either hire a Quooker technician to service the tap and replace the filter for £150 or do it yourself with a £30 kit.

Quooker also sells a cold water filter to make drinking water taste better. It is available for the Flex and Fusion faucets and needs to be replaced every six months.

How much do insinkers cost?

InSinkerator’s faucets start at £549 with no installation.

Tap Options

InSinkerator offers five different faucets including a three-in-one faucet with cold, hot and steaming hot water for £729 including installation. All are equipped with built-in filters.

How much do Franke taps cost?

The Minerva is a three-in-one faucet that provides hot, boiling and filtered cold water. The Omni series and the Minerva Mondial are four-in-one faucets that give you everything the Minerva can do plus cold tap water.

How much do Roux Lifestyle faucets cost?

Famous chef Michel Roux Jnr’s kitchen company makes the Monaco hot water tap, which will fetch you at least £996.

Tap Options

Roux Lifestyle makes a tip that Monaco. It’s available in four metallic variants, with the chrome version costing £996 and brass or gold at £1,400. The boiler will provide the set temperature and there is no combi boiler action to get both cold and hot water.

Maintenance costs and replacement filters

The Monaco faucet uses exotic-sounding nano filter paper to keep the tank free of scale and unpleasant-tasting chemicals. The paper should be changed every six months and a replacement costs £50.

Large hot water taps

How much do Grohe fittings cost?

Prices start between £800 and £1000 without installation, depending on the model and design. Installation costs £250 and can be arranged through Grohe’s website.

Tap Options

In addition to the different designs, you can choose between a round or square design and a medium or large tank. Each version of the faucet has a built-in filter. It also comes with a three-year warranty (upon registration), unlike most faucets which only have a two-year warranty.

The Red Duo comes with Grohe’s smallest filter, which needs to be replaced about every six to nine months. Extras cost £64. How much do Abode faucets cost?

Abode doesn’t sell its faucets directly, but through a retailer you can expect to pay around £749 for the Pronteau three-in-one or £1,375 for the Pronteau four-in-one.

Tap Options

The three-in-one faucet supplies hot and cold water as well as 98°C (almost boiling) water. The Pronteau four-in-one also dispenses filtered cold water. The three-in-one fitting is available in five finishes: copper, nickel, graphite, chrome and black. The four-in-one only has two finishes (chrome and nickel), but there are five different styles to choose from.

There aren’t many options when it comes to CDA’s faucet – it’s available in a chrome finish.

There are different types of faucets to choose from and there are four options when looking for a faucet that dispenses hot water. Zip’s boiling faucets are available with just boiling water, boiling water plus “ambient” water, boiling and chilled, then as an all-in-one faucet that provides boiling, chilled and sparkling water. All faucets filter the water before it reaches your glass.

How to take care of your hot water tap

All hot water faucets have a filter to remove chemicals from the water. This makes the water taste better – useful if you have a three-in-one faucet that supplies both cold and hot water – and protects the tank from scale and deposits that can damage it.

Most manufacturers recommend changing the filter every six to 12 months, and in some cases this can void your warranty if you don’t do so. Some manufacturers also recommend using a descaling solution to clean the inside of the tank.

The faucet itself can be cleaned like any other, paying special attention to limescale deposits around the nozzle.
