The ability to copy and paste is a basic and simple feature of any Android smartphone or tablet. However, if you want to take it to the next level, use the clipboard feature to find anything you’ve copied. Let’s start.

Like many things in Android, the clipboard feature works differently depending on the skin and Android version of your device. Samsung and LG phones have their own built-in clipboards. Other devices can only access the clipboard through a keyboard app.

For the purposes of this guide, we’ll focus on using the clipboard with a keyboard app. This method works on any Android device.

First, you need a keyboard app with a clipboard feature. Two popular options are Google’s Gboard and Microsoft’s SwiftKey. The clipboards in these two apps work very similarly.

Once you have your keyboard installed and set up, let’s try the clipboard. First, copy some text or a link. The clipboard does not support images.

Next, go to the app you want to paste what you copied into and tap the text field to bring up the keyboard. Look for a clipboard icon in the top toolbar.

This will open the clipboard and you will see the recently copied item at the top of the list. Just tap on one of the options on the clipboard to paste it into the text field.

Android doesn’t store items on the clipboard forever. After a while, the oldest clipboard items are deleted. Both Gboard and SwiftKey allow you to “pin” items to the clipboard to prevent them from being deleted after an hour. This can be done by long-pressing an item and selecting the “Pin” option.

If you copy and paste a lot on Android, the clipboard is an invaluable tool. You can copy a bunch of things at once and then paste them independently without jumping back and forth.

iPhone clipboard is used to copy and paste text and images between different areas of the same app or between different apps on the phone. The clipboard functionality is simple and easy to use. The text you just pasted (if any) is saved to the iPhone’s clipboard. To clear the clipboard, you have to copy something new into it, which essentially pushes out and replaces any text you’ve saved. In an empty text area, type some punctuation marks—even a single period will do. Press and hold the text until you see “Copy to clipboard” and select this option to copy the punctuation marks and delete the old text from temporary storage.

Before assuming the clipboard is empty, do a double check to make sure the operation worked. Press the text field with your finger and select “Paste” again. If only a few punctuation marks appear, the clipboard is empty. If the old text appears, the process did not take. Repeat the previous process and test until the old text is permanently deleted.

To enable Universal Clipboard on iOS and macOS, first make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple account on both devices. For this to work, your iPhone and Mac must be close together with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.

Next, on your Mac, go to System Preferences > General and enable the “Allow handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” option. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Airplay & Handoff and turn on Handoff.

The built-in universal clipboard on your Mac and iPhone is somewhat limited. You cannot browse your recently copied clips, nor sync more than one item at a time. So if you’re actively planning to copy and paste between your computer and phone, you might want to try a third-party app called Paste. It allows you to save your shared clipboard history and costs $2 per month.

iPhone, Android and Mac

Android phone and Mac owners don’t need to feel left out either. While you can’t replicate the same cohesive experience of Apple’s native universal clipboard, third-party apps allow you to share clipboard entries across Android and macOS. We recommend an app called ClipPaste.

Because external apps can’t constantly track your clipboard activity, ClipPaste requires some extra effort on your part to work and doesn’t integrate directly with standard copy-paste buttons like Apple Handoff.

In the case of ClipPaste, after copying an item, you must always first open the app on your current device to sync it. Once the app has recorded your copied content, it will send a notification to your second connected device and from the notification you can copy and paste it there.

Setting up ClipPaste is straightforward: install the app on your Mac, Android or iPhone and create a new account. After signing up, you can share your clipboard data across multiple devices.

Copy any text or image and launch ClipPaste app. Tap or click the notification on your secondary device, select the copied item to add it to the clipboard, and paste it anywhere using your default options.

Android and Windows

Similar to Apple Handoff, you can sync your Android and Windows 10 or 11 PC’s clipboards right in the latter’s settings.

First, download the Swiftkey keyboard app (Microsoft’s own) on your phone. Open it and give it the necessary permissions. Once inside, go to Rich Input > Clipboard. Turn on the Sync clipboard history toggle. You will be prompted to sign in with a Microsoft profile. Make sure you authenticate with the same account you set up on your computer.

On your Windows PC, go to Settings > System > Clipboard. Enable the options “Clipboard history” and “Sync across devices”.

To transfer clips from your Android phone to PC, you need to open the Swiftkey app after copying the text and it will soon be available on your computer via the regular “Ctrl + V” shortcut to paste.

To send copied items from PC to Android, copy the content as you normally would, then retrieve it from the Swiftkey app’s “Clipboard” menu on your phone.

Note, however, that we were unable to test this at the time of writing as the Swiftkey app kept throwing a sync error. Hopefully by the time you read this the issue has been resolved.

Android, iOS and Google Chrome

OnePlus Clipt is another way to keep your phone and computer clipboards in sync. It works similarly to the other cross-platform clipboard managers we’ve discussed so far, but instead of a desktop app, it’s only accessible as a Chrome extension on PC and Mac.

After downloading Clipt on your phone and Chromium browser of choice, copy any text or image and open the companion app. Clipt logs the last item you retrieved and attaches it to the shared clipboard. Visit Clipt on your other device and copy again to paste.

How to enable the new clipboard features

To enable these new clipboard features, go to Settings > System > Clipboard. If you don’t see the “Clipboard” option on your system, it’s because you haven’t updated to the October 2018 update yet.

These new features are disabled by default. To enable clipboard history, set Save Multiple Items to On.

To sync your clipboard data across all your Windows 10 devices—or rather, all your Windows 10 devices running Redstone 5 or later—set Sync Across Devices to On.

You can also choose an automatic sync setting. When you enable this feature, the default option is “Automatically sync text I copy”. Windows 10 automatically syncs anything you copy to the clipboard.

To prevent Windows from syncing potentially sensitive data like passwords, select “Never automatically sync text I copy” instead. You can then choose to manually sync text between your devices whenever you like.

How to access clipboard history

To open the new clipboard tool, press Windows+V in any application. A clipboard area will appear.

This panel shows a history of items you’ve copied to your clipboard, with the most recent item at the top. Select something on your clipboard by clicking on it to paste it into the current application.

You can “pin” items to your clipboard by hovering over and clicking the pin icon to the right of the item. Windows keeps this item on the clipboard and does not discard it to make room for new items. It’s always available, so this option is ideal for items that you insert frequently.

You can also click the “x” button on an item to immediately remove it from your clipboard.

Currently, this clipboard history supports text, HTML, and images less than 1MB in size. Larger items that you copy are not saved in the history.

Update: Microsoft has increased this limit to 4MB, so anything that is 4MB or less will be saved in your clipboard history.

If you haven’t enabled clipboard history, or haven’t copied anything to your clipboard since enabling it, a message will appear informing you that you must either enable the feature or copy something before proceeding.

How does the sync work?

If you have clipboard synchronization enabled, the contents of your clipboard will be synchronized between your PCs running the October 2018 update. This works using the same Microsoft Graph technology that powers Timeline, which was introduced in Windows 10’s April 2018 update. You must sign in to both devices with the same Microsoft account for this to work.

By default, the “Automatically sync text I copy” option causes Windows 10 to sync everything immediately when you copy it to your clipboard by pressing Ctrl + C or clicking the “Copy” option in any application. You don’t have to do anything special – what you copy on one PC just appears in the clipboard history on your other PC.

If you choose “Never automatically sync text I copy” instead, you’ll have to manually choose what you want to copy. To do this, open your clipboard history with Windows+V, hover over an item in your clipboard history and click the cloud-shaped “Sync with other devices” icon.

Initially, Windows 10 only syncs data less than 100 KB in size using this feature. Long sections of text and large images may not sync until Microsoft increases this limit.

Microsoft has promised that this feature can sync your clipboard data with Microsoft’s SwiftKey Keyboard for iPhone, iPad, and Android, so you can copy anything on your PC and easily paste it into any app on your phone. However, this feature has not yet been added to the SwiftKey Keyboard app.

How to clear your clipboard history

If you want to clear your entire history – both on your PC and on Microsoft’s servers – go back to Settings > System > Clipboard. Click the Clear button under Clear Clipboard Data.

This won’t delete your pinned items, so you’ll need to unpin them or delete them manually.

Troubleshooting viewing clipboard history on a Chromebook

It’s such a fundamental part of using a PC that you hardly think about it – it’s taken for granted. As helpful as it is, it’s limited to saving one item at a time using the Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V keyboard shortcuts. In this article, I’ll show you how to get the most out of the Office and Windows clipboard features. which store up to 24 items to help you work a little more efficiently.

I’m using Microsoft 365 on a Windows 10 64-bit machine, but you can use earlier versions of Office. The online versions do not support the clipboard history function. I don’t use Mac computers, but this is one of the few features that Mac doesn’t support. There is no demonstration file because you don’t need one.

Windows 11 previews suggest that the history feature will be similar to the Windows 10 feature. However, it will add support for new graphics like gifs, emojis, kaomojis, and other icons.

How to find Office clipboard history

Inserting one element at a time is usually sufficient. However, if you’re making multiple changes, or perhaps working with multiple open files, you might need a little more flexibility. As mentioned earlier, the Office clipboard stores up to 24 items in its history: text, HTML, and image files (those smaller than 4MB). You can still copy larger items, but the clipboard won’t save them in its history.

To view Office history, just click on the clipboard group dialog launcher. Click any element to insert it into the active document where the cursor is. For a little more control, click Options (at the bottom of the pane). From the resulting submenu, choose one of the first two options shown in Figure A.

You don’t have to select any option at all to access the history – just click on the clipboard group dialog launcher. However, you have other options. Table A explains them all. It is worth familiarizing yourself with each option so that you can choose the right one. When you need the history, you may find yourself switching from one option to another to work more efficiently.

The first option seems to be the most efficient, but whether you choose the first or the second is up to you. However, if you enable the clipboard by checking the first option, the Ctrl + C + C option will be grayed out.

To paste items from history, position your cursor where you want it and click. You can also use the drop down list which also has a delete option. Pasting works both between apps and within the same document. When you’re ready to close the clipboard, just click the X (close icon) in the top-right corner of the pane.

How to find Windows history

Windows has a similar feature, but you need to enable it in one of two ways. First, you can enable the feature through Windows 10 settings:

Click the Start button and then click Settings. Choose System from the resulting submenu. In the navigation pane, click Clipboard. In the Clipboard History section, toggle on by swiping right (Figure B). You can swipe left to turn off the feature.

After you enable history, you can access it at any time by pressing Windows + V. This brings up the Windows clipboard shown in Figure D. History isn’t the same as Office history, but Office history lets you pin items so you don’t lose them when you turn off your system.

How to use it across devices

Windows clipboard history is available between devices as the feature is now cloud-based. To use this additional feature, return to Settings (Start button), click System, and then select Clipboard. Figure E shows the Automatically sync text I copy option in the Sync across devices section. Click Get Started, verify your email address, and continue to respond to the prompts. This feature is tied to your Microsoft account, so you should use the same credentials on all devices where you want to access the same history.
