Basically you have to do the opposite of what we usually recommend. Washing your hair more frequently with hot water (and clarifying shampoo, see below!) will help speed up the fading process.

3. CHANGE YOUR SHAMPOO

4. VITAMIN C PLEASE

Mix some vitamin C into your clarifying shampoo, leave the mixture in your hair for 5 minutes and then rinse out. Vitamin C is an acid, meaning it has the power to break down semi-permanent hair molecules so they fade faster. 5. COLOR WHEEL FOR WIN

We know you’re looking for a quick way, but if you have some time and patience you may want to try correcting your hue. If you’re struggling to get rid of some greens in your hair, you can layer reds on top like a very diluted poison to cancel out greens! For this to work, you need to make sure your hair is already very faded! Or you can just go for a darker shade in general, like Purple Rain. Purple will cover the green and fade more towards a shade of lavender or back to your original color, depending on a handful of factors.

So how does the color wheel work in terms of picking up? Find your current color on the wheel, whatever color is directly opposite your current color, use that hue to pick up your current color. IE if you have yellow hair and want to tone it, add purple.

6. SEMI-PERMANENT HAIR COLOR REMOVER

Artists like Katy Perry and Kesha have flaunted a literal rainbow of hair colors, but don’t let their ever-changing styles (and team of personal stylists) fool you into thinking it’ll be easy to style your hair in a similar one hue to color. There are tons of glamorous, colorful curls out there on Instagram, Tumblr and whatnot, but as this series of rainbow hair pictures revealed, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes of a really great selfie.

So what’s it really like to have crazy colorful hair? It’s pretty cool, but it also comes with its own not-so-cool problems. I understand the struggle well as I recently ombre’d my black hair into an evergreen teal color. (Thank you so much to Lataye at Fox & Jane Salon in New York City for tolerating my endless questions and nervousness about the bleaching and coloring process.)

It looks great, doesn’t it? The blue-green stripe that constantly splashes on the wall next to my shower contradicts it. Here’s what you need to know before you sit in the salon chair or open that box of hair dye:

The color fades within days.

This bold color retains its original vibrancy for about four or five days — over a week if you’re lucky — before dulling thanks to the deadly shampoo and conditioner combo. Even if you use color-safe products, the color won’t last nearly as long as you’d hope. If you’re lucky, it will fade to a still-great color. If you’re less than lucky, it looks like you’ve spent the whole day soaking your can in chlorine.

The color stains everything.

Your pillowcase and towels will never be the same again. If your hair is freshly dyed, it will bleed out in the next few washes. Keep your wet hair away from anything white, especially your favorite t-shirts.

Dyeing your hair red will make your shower look like a crime scene.

So much blood red everywhere. Buy some bleach and get scrubbed unless you want to lose your deposit.

To keep your hair from fading, you need to wash it in cold water…

This is especially painful in winter. Eventually, you’ll give up and get touched up more often rather than face another freezing shower.

…and you can’t wash it that often.

This is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you have more time in the morning to sleep in instead of taking a shower. On the other hand, dry shampoo only goes so far.

Gloves are a must.

These are especially important if you’re coloring your hair at home. Dirty hands take forever to rub off again, and even styling wet hair can stain skin and nail beds.

Your natural hair color will dictate how much work your crazy color is.

If you are naturally blonde, congratulations! You can dye your hair any color with the least amount of effort as it is always easier to dye hair darker than lighter. If you have dark hair, the color won’t show without a generous dose of bleach. It may take several rounds of bleaching – three in my case – before your hair is light enough for the color to hold.

Bleach and split ends are BFFs.

You probably already know that bleach isn’t good for your hair, but you don’t realize how bad it actually is until you feel dead straw — OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration — where your hair used to be. Bleach makes your hair thinner, easier to break, and more tangled. It’s hard for me to find a strand that doesn’t end in split ends now, and it takes me twice as long to brush out the knotted mess.

Now that your hair is extra sensitive, you need to take extra care of it.

Heat styling adds to all the damage your hair is already dealing with. Proceed with caution.

Crazy colors require patience and commitment.

If your hair requires multiple rounds of bleaching, you will need to wait several weeks between each round. Don’t expect to walk into a salon with a certain color and walk out an hour later with light blue hair.

Pastel hair is one of the most difficult looks to achieve.

Hairstylists are even warning their clients to stay away from DIY pastel hair dye.

Some colors cannot be fully extracted.

My hairstylist told me that once I turn green my hair stays a vague shade of green until I cut it. It’s good that I really, really love green.

So there I am in the hot seat while Angeline checks on my hair condition and discusses how we can go brunette again. As she sets to work, I question her, no, interrogate her about such crazy-colored resurrections.

Angeline admits that not many clients seem to understand how difficult it is to remove such color. They seem to expect it to be a simple one-session change — but that’s often far from the case. It takes a lot of work, a lot of time, and often more than one session.

To ensure hair is as protected and undamaged as possible, it’s always better to make large color changes in stages and allow the hair time to settle before applying another layer of bleach.

“Green is the hardest color to remove, followed by blue and red. But it also all depends on how long you’ve been coloring those colors,” she told me. “On average it takes 5-8 hours to remove a crazy color, but again that depends on the intensity upfront.”

I’ll disclose now, it took us three separate sessions and a total of 19 hours to completely remove my green and turn it very dark brown. Sigh.

To neutralize the green, Angeline had to lightly bleach all of my hair to bring out the color and then neutralize the green tones with a coat of red color. Oh, and lots of Olaplex. Olaplex is a must have if your hair has been bleached excessively and you are looking for a color change.

Once the red layer was done, she applied the brunette color on top. After two sessions I didn’t need any bleach wash just the red to neutralize, the Olaplex treatment and then the brunette overlay to finish.

The reason I had to go back more than once is because after washing my hair the red and brown color dissipated very quickly revealing a dirty green hue that was still very present. It was only after the third session at FDP that my hair stopped washing out and settled into the brunette color I wanted.

If you want to go even lighter than brunette to a shade of blonde – that’s even more difficult, but not impossible. “Normally I would advise the client to do it gradually if their current hair condition is bad and brittle. However, there are clients who have fairly strong hair, so they can go for up to four sessions of bleach in one session and a massive Olaplex treatment to fight breakage.”

It’s much easier to come back to pastel colors. They require a lighter bleach wash and don’t require as many sessions as the pastel is light to begin with.

As for me? It took me a long time to adjust to being brunette again and my hair condition still hasn’t recovered from the over bleaching. I’ve actually decided that I want to go light (to a honey blonde) but that won’t happen for long given the condition of my hair.

Do I regret going green? Never.

Do I wish my hair was in better condition? Absolutely.

What is semi permanent hair color?

This type of hair dye consists of a formula that does not contain peroxide or ammonia. This means that unlike permanent hair dye, which contains ammonia, semi-permanent color coats the surface of your hair shaft rather than penetrating or altering it.

This makes it gentler and less damaging or drying out your hair. But it also means it doesn’t cover grays as effectively as demi-permanent or permanent color, which penetrates deep into your hair to change its color.

It’s also a dye which is great for enhancing your natural color so you don’t have unsightly roots growing out like permanent dyes. But it’s also not as effective at covering grays as permanent color and semi-permanent hair color don’t last as long – around 6-12 washes.

It’s still pretty stubborn when removed, but we know of a few methods that work to get that color out and go back to your original base hair color.

Can you wash out semi-permanent hair color?

Semi-permanent colors are designed to last between 6 and 12 washes, which means they should be washed off at some point if you want your natural color back.

However, it may take some experimentation to find the right shampoo or combination of products that works best for you.

A lot depends on things like the condition of your hair, how much dye you have to wash out, how often you wash your hair.

If you want to speed up the results, you can use dandruff shampoo, a clarifying shampoo, or dish soap that will help remove your color.

Does a bleach bath remove semi-permanent hair color?

Bleach baths are great for removing hair color. But does it work with semi-permanent hair color? The answer is yes!

To do this, mix a few tablespoons of bleach into the water, add shampoo, and then soak your head in this solution for about 10 minutes.

Afterwards, rinse your hair with cold water to close the cuticle and prepare to wash away any remaining residue.

However, this is quite a tough process for your hair and we do know some other, more natural methods to try first.

How to remove semi-permanent hair color at home.

Method #1: With shampoo.

Get a small bowl and fill it with warm water. Add some shampoo to the water. Use a large toothbrush or scrubbing sponge to create a lather in your hair. Continue rinsing until all color is gone. Repeat steps 2-4 until all color has been removed from your hair, then wash with cold water for a final rinse. Apply conditioner for soft, shiny hair!

Method #2: With baking soda.

Get your hair completely wet in the shower. Apply the conditioner to your hair and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Rinse out the conditioner and shampoo. Apply baking soda to your hair, leave on for a minute and then rinse out. Wash your hair with cold water until you feel there is no color left in it.

Method #3: Using hair dye.

Find a color that’s a similar shade to the hair dye you’re trying to remove. Buy at least two boxes. Apply the new color until your hair is saturated. Leave on as directed for maximum exposure time, then rinse with cold water and shampoo. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all color pigments are removed. After washing your hair, apply conditioner and then rinse again with cold water and shampoo. Wait at least two days before coloring your hair again (or longer, if desired).

Method #4: With bleach.

Wear protective gloves and protect all surfaces! From a hair bleach kit, mix the bleaching formula as directed. Apply the mixture to the hair with a cotton ball or sponge and soak well. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with water until all traces are gone from your hair. Rinse again with cold water to close the cuticles of your hair shafts and seal them against future damage. Be careful not to get bleach in your eyes, nose, mouth or skin during this process! If so, rinse thoroughly immediately.
