As a young girl, I loved temporary tattoos, but the choices I had weren’t great. Basically, it was either Hannah Montana or Hello Kitty. But now that I’m older, I’ve realized that there are a lot more options.

So I researched three companies online and tried out their temporary tattoos to find out which ones reigned and which ones drooled.

1. Ink box

Ink Box is a company specializing in the manufacture of semi-permanent tattoos. Basically, they created a patented formula that sinks into the top layer of the dermis and makes the tattoo last longer. which is great. In addition, the formula consists exclusively of natural ingredients.

After much deliberation, I ordered the Botanica 82 for $21. The design was a rose with a dotted square around the flower which looked chic.

When I received the package, I immediately opened it and got to work. Inside the elegant little box was the tattoo and the “secret formula” to apply the tattoo.

And to be honest, getting the tattoo done was a difficult process! I had to get my sister AND my mom to make sure it was applied properly. There seemed to be so many steps that were extremely time consuming. For example, one step instructs you to have someone hold the cloth with the secret formula on it over the tattoo for 15 minutes. Who has time for this?

After finally completing the process, I gave the tattoo a few days to develop. The ink on my skin was slowly darkening and I have to say it looked amazing! A lot of my friends thought I got a real tattoo and they were so cute! Unfortunately the tattoo started to fade quickly after the first few days and barely lasted the full two weeks.

Final verdict: Ink Box has a wide variety of tattoos that look absolutely phenomenal while they last, but it’s pretty high-maintenance and doesn’t last that long. Still, I would buy from them again.

Momentary Ink is another temporary tattoo company with a “secret formula” to make your tattoos look real. Her matting solution is called Real Teal. K!

The growing acceptance of tattoos in society has seen tattoo parlors become a growing contributor to the South African small business landscape.

Speaking at the second annual SA International Tattoo Convention in Cape Town last weekend, tattoo artist and convention organizer Waldo del Rocca estimated there are 700 tattoo parlors in the country.

One of them is InKasi Tattoo in Soweto. Although InKasi artist Jay Don, one of at least four Soweto-based tattoo artists, was not at the convention, he said he has noticed a significant increase in black clients over the past six years.

Don said he only did about 300 tattoos a year for his first year or two, but now he’s doing twice that.

“People are opening up about it in the Hood,” he said. “You see tattoos on TV, celebrities have them and they see them everywhere.”

He said that if you have dark skin, you need to set the needle a little lower, and colors like red and blue don’t work as well. This is partly why most of his customers opt for more traditional designs like crosses or religious texts.

Del Rocca, who runs Cape Electric Tattoos and Lighthouse Supply, which supplies tattoo machines, ink and other tattoo parlor supplies, said they have 500 tattoo parlors on their books that are registered with the Health Professions Council of SA.

He said there were probably another 200 unregistered studios and the number of tattoo artists working from home was “insane”.

With tattoo starting prices around R500 and up to R1200 or more per hour for larger jobs, a popular studio could be turning R80000 or more per month. According to Del Rocca’s figures, a conservative estimate of the value of ink on skin in South Africa would be in the region of R60 million a year.

Certainly the sound of humming needles applying artwork to living canvases had filled the venue by midday on a gray and chilly Saturday when many people wore slightly less than the weather seemed to call for in order to show off their body art. By lunchtime, about a third of the 40 booths, each with two tattoo artists, had a customer getting tattooed.

Del Rocca said between 1,500 and 2,000 people would attend the convention. Tickets cost R195 for Friday night and R590 for the whole weekend, and around 1,000 visitors would also pay for a tattoo.

In recent years, tattoos have become less frowned upon, Del Rocca said, and have even crept into the corporate world.

“We have tattooed plastic surgeons and Supreme Court justices; carpenters and garbage collectors,” he said.

Although there is not yet an industry organization in the country, tattoo parlors are regulated by the Health Professions Council of SA to ensure medical waste is properly disposed of. In addition, the ink used has been developed to the point that it contains no animal products, contains natural carbon-based pigments and has no added chemicals or plastics.

Ideally, tattoo artists would train with someone who has been tattooing for at least 10 years and they will learn about blood-borne pathogens, cross-contamination and standard hygiene procedures. In addition, a budding tattoo artist must have an “artistic flair.”

For at least two Capetonians, the convention provided the perfect opportunity to get more work done by their favorite Highland artists.

Craig Marley, who has covered much of his body in colorful characters from Marvel Comics, said he regularly flew to Gauteng to get more work done by Pretoria-based tattoo artist Tony Weintraud, but Weintraud was at the convention, so did Marley it. This time I don’t have to buy a plane ticket.

Similarly, Capetonian Cayli Varejes got more ink on her left leg from her favorite artist Nick Taljaard, who works at Fallen Heroes in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. Varejes, who owns a holistic yoga and meditation center in Cape Town, said she has spent about R70,000 on tattoos and is likely to spend R70,000 more.

For the artists, 51 of whom flew in from countries including the US, China, Taiwan and the UK, the convention was an opportunity to exhibit their work, exchange notes, meet other artists and arrange guest appearances in their studios.

Popular tattoo artists get a 50% to 70% commission from the studios, so it’s common to perform as a guest artist, even at a studio abroad.

New York artist Britney Goodman said that although she had to pay to attend the convention, she saw no reason not to accept the invitation.

“I’m here for the experience. I’m just happy to get enough clients to pay my way, and that’s what tattoo artists tend to do,” Goodman said.

She said many artists don’t have a home base, instead building their reputations through their portfolio and “floating” between studios.

Warsaw-based artist Agnieszka Trojanowska said conventions are “a pretty big part” of the tattoo business, and attending them is a good opportunity to “get something fresh and new.”

A congress she attended in Hong Kong, for example, “made it clear to me what can be done”.

“I’ve seen tattoos so well done it’s hard to believe they’re actually tattoos.”

She said that while South African tattoo parlors get a lot of walk-in customers, most studios in Poland are one-person, by appointment only.
