How to: Dress Up for Decades Day
Every year, Thanksgiving week at Stamford High School is a ghost week. This year’s Spirit Week begins with Decades Day on November 23rd. Each class is assigned a different decade:
Seniors – 60s
Juniors – 70s
Second graders – 80s
Freshman – 90s
Here are some ideas of what your outfit could look like next week:
1960s:
The late ’60s consisted of bright swirls, tie-dye shirts, and long hair. Fringe was also very into outfits.
1970s:
The fashion trends of the 70’s were skinny trousers that flared at the bottom and platform shoes – actually rather exaggerated trends from the 60’s.
1980s:
The ’80s wardrobe featured neon colors, bright makeup, backcombed hair, and bright accessories like hoop earrings, sunglasses, and stacked bangles.
1990s:
Flannel shirts, baseball caps, and high-rise jeans were all part of the ’90s. Loose-fitting crop tops were commonly worn by women and hip-hop inspired outfits were worn by men.

Spirit Week: Decade Day
On the Thursday of a very eventful Spirit Week we had Decades Day. A lot of people were very excited to dress up as something outside of their normal style. The teachers also liked to draw on old styles from their high school past. I asked some students and teachers what they thought of Thursday’s looks.
Many people enthusiastically dressed up as hippies, including patterned flowy pants, round glasses and lots of tie-dye. Brady Knuff was very passionate about the hippie look that a lot of people were sporting, saying, “Everybody wore these damn glasses.” He’s right, considering almost everyone got the same round colored glasses from Amazon. Something that stands out the most in any hippie outfit is the flared pants. Sean Fullerton said these pants were “very interesting. I love the elephants.”
Some less popular looks were looks from the 80’s, 90’s and even the 20’s. According to Alice Purkiss, the look that stood out the most was “Michael Lynch’s ’90s ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ look”. Michael’s look was a unique take on the 1992 film.
Many of the younger boys took inspiration from the 80s for their decade-long outfit. Colin Costigan expressed that he “liked the preppy boys from the 80’s”.
The teachers had a blast recreating looks from times they lived through. Ms. Thaler told me the interesting story behind her outfit: “Decades Day gave me the opportunity to pull out of my closet my 28-year-old t-shirt that we got from winning the state field hockey championship in 1990.” She had an authentic outfit straight out of the late ’90s that showed how she actually dressed in high school. As well as looking back at the past, Ms Thaler explained that it’s interesting to see “student interpretations of the things that we wore in the ’80s”. This led to a conversation about how we think millennials will be portrayed in 20 years.
Overall, Decade Day has been one of the most popular days of Spirit Week so far. It was fun recreating looks from the past and adding our own twist to them. Teachers don’t just remember their past appearances.
