After a major pandemic comeback, Bed Bath & Beyond is going without coupons.

The retailer is known for coupons offering 15 to 20% off its range of various homewares, which customers often receive in the mail. As part of a new strategy, Bed Bath and Beyond hopes to increase profits and compete with other retailers rather than encourage “over-reliance on the coupon,” Chief Merchandising Officer Joe Hartsig told investors Wednesday, according to CNBC.

The company said it examined the online shopping carts of 405 million shoppers with more than 285,000 items and found that 40% of the coupons “were ineffective,” according to CNBC reports. Bed Bath and Beyond has also grown among a younger demographic that is 20% less likely to use coupons.

But coupon fans need not panic. CEO Mark Tritton reassured investors that they will not do away with coupons entirely, but “will use them as a real power,” CNBC reported that he told investors.

As students across the country turned to online learning, the chain saw digital sales grow 89% in the second quarter, thanks to a strategy of analyzing how distance learning would impact customer needs and aligning stores with theirs proximity to schools.

The two million new customers who checked out the Bed Bath and Beyond website are younger than before and more interested in home decor, chief brand officer Cindy Davis told Business Insider earlier this month. The store is preparing to employ the same strategy as it adjusts to the holiday season, its other key sales driver.

Bed Bath and Beyond executives have been talking about ending their reliance on coupons and instead focusing on building loyalty to the Beyond+ membership program since at least 2016. Customers don’t seem to care that much about the coupons anyway. In a 2018 study by Morgan Stanley, only 50% of Bed Bath and Beyond customers said they made an in-store purchase because of the coupons, a lower number than in previous years.

“Consumers appear to be becoming increasingly indifferent to this offering,” a Morgan Stanley analyst wrote in 2018, which seems to remain true.

However, unless you’re a very frequent shopper, the Comenity Bank-issued Bed Bath & Beyond credit card is probably something you can do without. It has an annual fee of $0, but the rewards it earns are inflexible and a little complicated.

Here are five things you should know about the Bed Bath & Beyond credit card.

1. There are 2 versions of the map

There is no annual fee for either version, and both can earn bonuses. But there are some key differences:

Bed Bath & Beyond Store Credit Card: This is a “closed loop” card; H. it can only be used within the family of Bed Bath & Beyond stores including Cost Plus, Cost Plus World Market, Buy Buy Baby, Harmon and Harmon denominations.

Bed Bath & Beyond Mastercard: This loyalty card can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

As of November 2020, both versions offered an introductory bonus, if approved: a $20 rewards certificate valid on the same day only with a purchase of $20 or more, and a $25 welcome coupon with a purchase of $100 or more more.

Nerdy tip: You can apply for both versions. However, please note that if you apply for the Bed Bath & Beyond Mastercard but do not qualify, you will automatically be considered for the loyalty card.

2. You can choose to earn rewards…

Both cards can earn 5% back in rewards on purchases from Bed Bath & Beyond and its family of brands. The Mastercard version can also earn 2% back on purchases at gas stations and grocery stores and 1% on all other points.

However, this is not “cashback”. Instead, you’ll receive shop rewards that are only valid in Bed Bath & Beyond family stores.

For every $10 in rewards you earn, you will receive a $10 reward certificate in the mail. (Yes, by mail.) There is a limit to how many Certificates you can redeem per purchase (20), but you can also use Bed Bath & Beyond coupons in the same transaction.

In addition to these reward vouchers, the Bed Bath & Beyond Mastercard will receive additional gift vouchers once you reach the $1,000 and $6,000 spending thresholds on the card. Conditions apply.

3. … Or you decide on special financing options

Instead of purchasing award certificates from Bed Bath & Beyond, you can opt for deferred interest financing for large purchases from Bed Bath & Beyond, which means you owe no interest on the purchase if you pay in full within the required timeframe:

You can get six months of financing on purchases between $250 and $499.99.

Purchases between $500 and $1,499.99 are eligible for 12 months of financing.

For purchases over $1,500 (using the Bed Bath & Beyond Loyalty Card), you can choose 24 months of special financing. (This is not available in the Mastercard version.)

Unfortunately, you can’t have your new cake pan and eat out of it. If you choose to take advantage of these special financing offers, purchases made with them are not eligible for rewards. You have to decide on one or the other offer.

Also remember that these offers do not waive interest like true 0% intro APR credit cards would. It is merely “deferred”, meaning that interest is still accruing in the background. If you do not pay for the purchase in full by the due date – even if you only have a few cents left – you will be charged interest on the entire amount, retroactive to the date of purchase.

4. Your rewards have a short shelf life

If you’re a casual Bed Bath & Beyond buyer and have plans to earn rewards slowly and save them for a big purchase, this plan probably won’t work.

That’s because the Bed Bath & Beyond Rewards Certificates you earn expire after six months. Since these certificates are issued automatically once you earn $10 in reward dollars in your account, it is not possible to let them build up slowly over time.

5. You won’t want to carry a balance around with you

If you choose to earn rewards rather than take advantage of special deferred interest financing, make sure you pay your card bill in full each month.

As of November 2020, the Bed Bath & Beyond Mastercard’s APR ranged from 13.99% to 23.99% depending on creditworthiness, and the Bed Bath & Beyond credit card had an APR of 26.99%.

If you’re an occasional Bed Bath & Beyond shopper, you can probably do better with another rewards credit card. The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 Month BT Offer, for example, earns 2% cashback on all purchases: 1% on purchase and 1% on withdrawal.
