Don’t Stick Here:
  1. A dirty surface.
  2. The bottom of a pool.
  3. The bottom of a boat.

Are your stickers dishwasher safe?

Waterproof vs. waterproof – what is the difference? Waterproof stickers and waterproof labels are two common descriptions for our products that serve very similar purposes. Let’s take a look at the difference between the two and hopefully lead you to the right product for your brand!

Waterproof and/or weatherproof decals can be applied to almost anything…except the bottom of a submarine, of course. These are the Cut, Kiss Cut and Clear stickers.

Waterproof labels are printed on durable polypropylene material that will last, even when in contact with oils and liquids in products. These are our gloss white, matte and clear labels.

With a waterproof sticker, your design will look great! Whether applied indoors or out on the window of a car exposed to all the elements, once applied to a clean, dry surface, waterproof decals will stay in place for a long time and will withstand water.

Waterproof and weatherproof custom stickers

Water and weather resistant custom decals can be applied to almost anything. Here are some examples of items that you can put a waterproof and weatherproof sticker on:

Stickers here:

Custom water bottles

The top of a snowboard or ski set

A rocket ship on its way into space

Why? Because our water and weather resistant stickers are so versatile, you can apply them to almost anything – even if it’s a bit worn. Space has nothing against us! Seriously, we know. Our water and weather resistant custom stickers are great when you just need that extra support. These decals hold up in a variety of water conditions such as rain, a conventional dishwasher, the back of a car going through a car wash, or a rainy drive home after a day of surfing.

*While our decals work great in conventional dishwashers like the ones you might have at home or work, they may not hold up as well in commercial dishwashers.

Don’t stay here:

The bottom of a submarine

To patch a leaky bucket

Inside an aquarium

Why? When we say almost everything, we mean it. Our water and weather resistant decals should not be used on items that will be submerged in water for long periods of time (such as the bottom of your favorite submarine).

Waterproof labels

Water-resistant labels, which include gloss white, matte and clear labels, are printed on polypropylene stock coated with a water and oil resistant laminate for long-lasting applications. These labels will last over time without peeling, curling or fading when exposed to oils and liquids in products. With proper care, these labels will also last in a conventional dishwasher!

Glue here:

Why? If you’re looking for something that will work well indoors and/or in refrigerated conditions, look no further. Products like honey jars, hummus containers and body scrubs benefit from the robustness of our water-resistant labels.

Don’t stay here:

A dirty surface

The bottom of a pool

The bottom of a boat

Why? Our waterproof labels do not apply well to oily or dirty surfaces. Make sure to wipe down your surface so it’s free of any dirt, residue, or possible buildup. For more information, see our tips for putting clear labels on your products. Our waterproof labels do not do well when fully submerged in water, such as on the bottom of a pool or boat.

It’s good to note that both our waterproof labels and our waterproof and weatherproof custom stickers are not intended to be permanently submerged in water.

  2. Paper stickers are more easily marked and the design can run if water or oil touches the sticker whereas vinyl is more durable and longer lasting.

Are your stickers dishwasher safe?

There’s no denying that stickers are a creative and colorful way to make your brand stand out. They can be used as a label for your product or as a promotional gift. However, choosing the right material is critical to the success of decals for your business.

How can you tell if a sticker is vinyl?

Vinyl stickers usually have a slightly shinier, shinier, or more plastic appearance compared to their paper counterparts. Although it is possible to purchase glossy paper stickers or matte vinyl stickers, paper stickers will never have the gloss that vinyl has. Paper stickers are easier to mark and the design can run off if water or oil gets on the sticker, while vinyl is more durable and long-lasting. Vinyl stickers peel off easily in one movement compared to paper, which can break apart when peeled off. Vinyl decals feel “smoother” than paper decals and are often a bit thicker as well.

There are currently a variety of styles and materials for you to choose from. These include traditional paper stickers, vinyl stickers, and die-cut stickers. Let’s take a closer look at each sticker option to learn more about the pros and cons of each and the best uses for them.

Traditional paper stickers

Paper stickers are an environmentally friendly choice and the cheapest. Custom paper stickers are usually printed and shipped in sheets. Precut paper stickers are often cheaper than custom paper stickers. Aside from being very inexpensive, sticker papers are easy to make and serve many purposes. Paper stickers and labels are available in matte or gloss finish. You can even opt to have them in a permanent or removable adhesive depending on how you want to use them.

Uncoated Paper Stickers – Stickers printed on uncoated paper have a rougher surface compared to those printed on other materials. Easier to print on and absorbs ink, pens and pencils, uncoated paper stickers always have a high quality finish.

Glossy Paper Stickers – Custom glossy paper stickers are more durable than the uncoated paper stickers. Although they cannot be considered waterproof stickers, they can withstand light wiping and occasional outdoor exposure without fading.

Paper Correction Labels – Also called opaque labels, these types of paper stickers are used to correct or cover up errors or outdated information. This spot correction tool will help you cut costs and save time re-printing a new batch of stickers.

Paper stickers and labels are your best bet if you’re on a tight budget, but they’re not waterproof. They cannot withstand extreme outside temperatures or too much sunlight, are likely to fade and can be more prone to cracking. Paper stickers, on the other hand, are perfect for indoor use and temporary outdoor use.

Which vinyl is best for dishwasher safe?

There is no vinyl or heat transfer vinyl that is officially listed as dishwasher safe. Anyone who lists their vinyl as “dishwasher safe” is simply wrong and usually if pressed on the topic, they will usually back off and say most of the things I’m about to tell you below.

Are your stickers dishwasher safe?

One of the most frequently asked questions is, “What vinyl is dishwasher safe?” The short answer is “none,” but there’s more to the answer simply because many will argue that they put things in the dishwasher all the time with no problem. There are many variables and because of the many variables, results can vary widely. Regardless of testing, history, what you might read on blogs (it’s on the internet so it has to be true right?), there is no such thing as dishwasher safe vinyl due to the many variables that can affect it. To me, if it says it’s dishwasher safe, there shouldn’t be any concern for any of the points I’m going to discuss below, right? I mean, peel it off, stick it on anything you want to put in the dishwasher and it’ll be fine, right? I do not think so.

Below I list some of the things to consider:

1. There is no vinyl or thermal transfer vinyl officially listed as dishwasher safe. Anyone who lists their vinyl as “dishwasher safe” is just plain wrong and if pressed on the subject they will usually back off and say most of the things I’m about to tell you. Some use the term “dishwasher safe” because it turns it into a gray area, again depending on the things I’ll list below. Any manufacturer who says their vinyl is dishwasher safe is just going nuts, and we would never support such a blanket statement.

2. Although adhesives can be waterproof, this does not mean that they can withstand different water pressures and temperatures in different dishwashers. As a test, I put glassware with vinyl that had been cured for over 72 hours in our old Maytag dishwasher and since we keep our hot water a little hotter than most people probably do, it stripped the vinyl and melted it quite a bit.

3. The finish is very important and depending on what you apply it to the vinyl can be more or less prone to peeling. Smooth surfaces like acrylic or glass are better than maybe a mug with a textured coating on it.

4. The surface is very important as the more surface you apply with it in your design it is less likely to peel off than with thin lines and fonts.

5. When applying vinyl it is important to apply firm pressure to activate the adhesive. Our plastic squeegees are perfectly suited for this task. A lot of people use a Cricut tool for this, but it’s not a squeegee. It’s actually a scraper so it doesn’t make good contact due to the rigid curved surface.

6. Doesn’t putting HTV on a mug make it dishwasher safe? I mean, if it can go through a washing machine on a shirt, why shouldn’t it be dishwasher safe? The adhesive on HTV is not intended for solid surfaces. Lots of people like to experiment and there’s certainly no rule that says you can’t apply HTV to a solid surface, but that’s definitely not what it was designed for, so results can vary widely. The mug press that comes with many heat presses is for sublimation, not HTV.

7. What about 751 or 951? These use the same adhesive as 651 and you can read more about the differences here. None are technically dishwasher safe, regardless of what you read on another vendor’s website or ads.

Items with vinyl shouldn’t really be put in the microwave either. Vinyl is PVC and can emit toxic fumes if heated excessively.

Does Permanent vinyl stay on in dishwasher?

Permanent vinyl is not dishwasher safe because the decal may peel off when exposed to the heat inside the dishwasher.

Are your stickers dishwasher safe?

Many crafters have debated the answer to this question for years: Is permanent vinyl dishwasher safe? No, while permanent vinyl is waterproof, it is not dishwasher safe, especially if the dishwasher has an automatic heating element and especially because different dishwashers have different water pressure and temperature settings.

Your choice is to wash a mug or mug with permanent vinyl decals in the dishwasher. However, don’t expect the print to last long. If you want your permanent vinyl to last longer and intend to wash it in the dishwasher, you can apply a sealant and cure it.

Would you like to know more? Read on to find out why vinyl isn’t permanently dishwasher safe. Also, learn how to make a permanent vinyl dishwasher safe with a sealant.

Why is it important to use permanent vinyl?

For goods that require frequent washing, you need a vinyl that will last. Permanent vinyl is the answer. Permanent vinyl is generally safe for outdoor use, UV resistant, the great outdoors, water bottles, mugs, or even car decals.

Most brands of permanent vinyl come in a variety of colors, textures, and patterns. Whether you use a glossy vinyl, matte vinyl, or glitter vinyl, it will look amazing on any craft project you have.

Why is permanent vinyl not dishwasher safe?

Permanent vinyl is not dishwasher safe as the decal may peel off if exposed to the heat of a dishwasher. A feature of a dishwasher is an automatic heating element. What it does is disinfect the dishes with warm water. The water temperature in the dishwasher can range from 130°F to 140°F.

This heat can cause the sticker’s adhesive to peel off. The same concept applies to microwaves. You cannot microwave a mug or mug with a permanent vinyl sticker on it.

When permanent vinyl is exposed to heat or hot water, the decal will not remove immediately. However, the sticker may peel off over time if constantly washed in the dishwasher.

In short, excessive heating of a sticker can cause the vinyl to peel away from the merchandise. Even if it is a durable premium vinyl, it is better to wash the goods by hand.

There are dishwashers that allow you to turn off the heat settings

Here’s another fact that needs to be clarified: There are dishwashers where you can switch off the heat setting. There are claims that for this type of dishwasher, since there are no heating elements involved, the durable vinyl cup or mug can be placed on the top rack of the dishwasher and the heat setting can be turned off.

That is, if the decal was applied as flat as possible and free of creases and bubbles. There is still some doubt in this area and it depends on the brand of vinyl you are working with. That’s why it’s better to hand wash goods with permanent vinyl or either apply a sealer to it.

How long does permanent vinyl last?

Typically, durable vinyl on mugs lasts three to eight years, sometimes longer, if only hand washed. For this reason, it is recommended that durable vinyl be used on goods that require constant laundering.

With removable vinyl, the decal will only last months with constant washing. It is recommended for indoor use, especially on indoor walls.

Also, never use heat transfer vinyl or iron-on vinyl on mugs, mugs, or mugs. Heat transfer vinyl is printed onto fabrics using a heat press machine.

But what happens when you keep washing mugs with permanently printed vinyl? Most likely the sticker may peel off over time, shorter than the expected period mentioned above. It is recommended to always hand wash vinyl printed merchandise.

How do you make a permanent vinyl dishwasher safe?

To make a permanent vinyl dishwasher safe, you must cure the permanent vinyl with a sealant. An excellent product to use is the dishwasher safe Mod Podge. To be clear, it’s called Mod Podge, not Modge Podge, so let’s not get confused with that.

This product dries quickly, is non-toxic, water resistant, is officially listed as FDA cleared, can be applied to glass, plastic or ceramic, leaves a smooth finish and of course protects the decal in the dishwasher.

A Mod Podge will protect the vinyl decal from being washed in the dishwasher for years to come. Mod Podge can withstand different water pressures of different brands of dishwashers.

It is applied to the entire surface of a cup or mug, not just the sticker portion. This is to ensure that all goods have a smooth and even finish. There are other sealers on the market, but the dishwasher safe Mod Podge has been recommended by many crafters for how many years.

Have you never worked with a seal before? That’s okay! We will show you how to apply sealant to the vinyl design and cure it.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make permanent adhesive vinyl dishwasher safe

There is a solution to every problem. In that case, if you’re giving away or selling vinyl printed mugs, you want to make sure they last longer. Don’t just hope it only lasts up to three years, aim for a long lifespan.

Remember that quality comes before everything else. So the solution to a non-dishwasher safe vinyl is to apply a sealer to it and cure it.

Here is the step-by-step guide on how to make a permanent adhesive vinyl dishwasher safe. But first you need to gather the supplies you need.

Project ideas using pastel colored matte self-adhesive vinyl from TeckWrap Craft

Supplies are needed

Cutting Machine (Silhouette or Cameo)

TeckWrap Craft permanent adhesive vinyl

Clear transfer tape

Weed pick or tweezers

squeegee or a used credit card

Food-safe seal for a mug

brush

Clean cloth or paper towel

rubbing alcohol

Microwave for baking (optional)

Step 1: Print the design on the goods

We won’t go into too much detail when putting vinyl on merchandise. But to refresh your memory, here are the summarized details:

Choose a theme

Upload the design to the cutting machine software

Adjust the design size

Do not mirror permanent vinyl

Place the permanent adhesive vinyl plastic-side down on the cutting machine

Send the vinyl to the cutting machine for cutting

Weed out the excess vinyl

Transfer the decal to the transfer tape with a squeegee

Clean the goods and prepare the sticker

Remove the vinyl backing

Stick the sticker on and make sure there are no wrinkles

The finished product should look like the photo below

Peacock blue opal vinyl on a flat bottom wine glass

Step 2: Clean the goods

Once you are happy with your creation and have ensured the vinyl is free of wrinkles and bubbles, proceed to clean the goods. You should have cleaned the merchandise prior to applying the vinyl, but you will need to clean it again. Use a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol to clean all merchandise.

Step 3: Applying the coating

Here you need to take out the Mod Podge and the brush. It is advisable to use a brand new brush for better strokes on the mug. Just a warning, if you apply Mod Podge to clear glass, Mod Podge’s brush strokes may show.

This will make the whole look of the glass frosty. So here is the step-by-step process of applying the coating:

Apply the coating to the entire merchandise, making sure to apply the strokes in the same direction.

Apply a very thin layer

Avoid holding the painted portion of the Mod Podge and allow the first coat to dry for an hour.

For a faster drying process, you can use a hair dryer. The first layer dries in 15-30 minutes

Repeat the process and apply the second and third layers

Once the third layer is complete, proceed to cure

You can cure the mug without the microwave. Put it in a clean, dry place for 28 days and just leave it there

If you wish to cure the goods in the microwave, set the microwave to 350°F for 30 minutes

Do not let the goods out of the microwave after 30 minutes. Allow the microwave and mug to cool completely before removing. Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes

Keep it in a cool, clean and dry place for 72 hours

Then you are done! The permanent adhesive vinyl is now dishwasher safe
