The voice messages you can send to your friends or anyone with open DMs on Instagram can be recorded for up to a minute and saved permanently in both individual and group direct messages. Unlike Instagram Stories, they don’t automatically disappear after a certain amount of time. The move comes just six months after the social media company released its video calling feature, which rivals similar offerings from Snapchat and Facebook Messenger.

Basically, Instagram’s new walkie-talkie feature is as intuitive as most other voice messaging features of popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Zello. How to use it:

Open Instagram and go to Direct Messages. Select the person you want to send a voice message to and at the bottom is an icon that looks like a 1960’s microphone.

Press and hold the icon to record a message. You can also swipe up to the lock icon to record without having to hold down the button, or swipe left to cancel. 1. Disable read receipts in WhatsApp

Perhaps the most reliable way to listen to WhatsApp audio without notifying the sender is to disable WhatsApp read receipts on your device before opening the WhatsApp voice message.

Open WhatsApp > tap the 3 dot menu icon and select Settings from the drop down menu.

Note: On iPhone, you can directly tap the Settings tab from the bottom menu.

On the settings screen, go to Account > Privacy > scroll down and uncheck Read Receipts.

After turning off read receipts, you can open and listen to the WhatsApp audio or voice message.

Since read receipts are already disabled in your WhatsApp account, the sender cannot see whether or not you actually listened to their voice message.

Another easy way to listen to WhatsApp audio without the sender’s knowledge is to enable Airplane mode on your device before opening the WhatsApp audio message.

This method works because Airplane mode kills both the WiFi and cellular connections on your device, which prevents read receipts from being sent to the sender.

On iPhone: Open Settings and slide the switch next to Airplane mode to the ON position.

On an Android phone: Go to Settings > Connections > Toggle Airplane mode to ON position.

How to listen to your voicemail messages on Android

1. Turn on your phone and open the Phone app.

Press and hold your phone’s power button to turn it on. Once you’ve unlocked your main screen, tap on the phone app to launch it.

2. Access the dial pad.

You need to enter the Phone app’s dial pad as if you were calling a real person. To do this, tap the keypad icon at the bottom of the screen.

3. Call your voicemail system.

Call your voicemail account by entering their phone number using the keys on the dialpad, and then pressing the green call button. Or you can just press and hold the 1 key as a shortcut.

4. Enter your voicemail system password.

You’ll be prompted to enter your voicemail account passcode if you’ve set one (which I hope you have). Use the keys on the keypad to enter it.

5. Check your voicemail inbox.

1. The Voice Messages feature hasn’t reached your device yet

Many apps that work across operating systems (e.g. iOS, Android) often do not receive updates at the same time. Therefore, it can happen that a feature only arrives on your mobile phone a short time after it was announced. This may be the reason why the icon is completely missing from your chat box.

However, considering how long the voice memo feature 🗣️ has been around, it’s safe to say that it’s pretty unlikely your phone is that far behind. Therefore, we recommend you to check your Instagram app and make sure it is up to date (Step 4) from your device’s native store (App Store for iOS, Play Store for Android).

It is worth mentioning that the Instagram website does not support the voice memo feature yet.

2. Bad or no internet connection

In most cases, the reason your voice message on Instagram isn’t sending successfully or working is that it was never delivered to the recipient(s) in the first place. Therefore, this may be due to a weak internet connection or your device does not have internet access at the time of sending the message.

Likewise, some voice memos in your DMs, whether sent or received, are unplayable for the same reason. It is important to know that Instagram messages are not stored on your device, they are stored online.

So if you try to listen to a voice memo and the play icon changes but there is no sound, it’s because Instagram is actually trying to load the voice memo for you but is unable to do so due to connection issues. Therefore, it cannot download the data from the servers to play the audio.

Of course, when it comes to sending voice notes on Instagram, you can always do it in advance before connecting. Then the messages will be delivered if you have internet access. However, this is not recommended as many users have reported that their voice memos may be lost if they are undelivered for too long.

3. Instagram can’t access your microphone

In order to record audio in the app, Instagram needs to be granted access to your microphone 🎙️. Usually this is the case, but you may have received a pop-up at some point and accidentally denied access to Instagram. Otherwise, these permissions may also have been reset by a system or app update.

So, in step 9, we will show you how to enable microphone permissions for Instagram app.

Additionally, your device’s microphone may be in use by another background application/process. In this case, the Instagram app may not be able to access it either. Therefore, we recommend closing all other background apps (step 3) or restarting your device (step 4).

As a result, you may not be able to send anything using your voice. Also, you may face a similar problem when you try to record other videos in the app.

4. Your microphone is disabled/not working

If you have headphones or headsets 🎧 plugged in, whether wired or wireless, their microphone is most likely being used instead of your device’s. In this case, make sure that the microphone 🎤 is not disabled or there is a hardware problem.

Therefore, to troubleshoot your device’s microphone, we recommend testing it with an external microphone connected (step 13) and without (step 11).

If the voice memo feature makes a noise in the chat box when you disconnect the headphones, you may need to get a new pair. Suppose the voice memo feature doesn’t work even when no device is connected, only with an external microphone. We then recommend checking with your relevant provider to ensure the microphone hardware is working properly on your device. You may need to use the additional microphone temporarily.

In some hearing aids there is a small switch that allows you to disable/enable the microphone. So you may need to check if this is enabled.

You can also test the microphone (step 12) with other apps, such as the Voice Memos or Recorder app.

1. Restart the Instagram app

For starters, we recommend simply starting with a quick restart of the Instagram app. When an app is causing problems, the simplest solution often seems to be to restart it from scratch. This solution proves unexpectedly effective on many occasions to solve transient problems especially when the app has not started correctly.

This may be just the right solution for your Instagram voice message not working or playing properly.

Therefore, this is both a very simple process and most likely the magic when all else fails. Here are the steps to restart the Instagram app:

First, quit the Instagram app and close it by removing it from your recent apps or the app switcher. If you are using Android devices, you can force quit the Instagram app through your Settings app. Then restart the Instagram app from your home screen or app list.

2. Log out of your Instagram account and log back in

Continuing from the previous step, another effective step to fix temporary issues is to log back into your Instagram account. This will update your account credentials with the app and resolve issues with various features including voice messages.

In addition, it is coupled with the previous step, restarting the app, for an additional effect. So, after logging out of your Instagram account, try restarting the app as well (Step 1).

First, tap your profile picture in the lower right corner. Once your profile is displayed, tap on the hamburger menu in the top right corner. Then tap Settings at the bottom of the sidebar.

Next, scroll down and tap Sign out.

For PC

Once this is done, we recommend waiting a few minutes before logging back into your Instagram account.

3. Close other background apps

Next, you need to make sure that no other app using the device’s microphone is still running in the background. Therefore, the microphone cannot be used by another app at the same time, in this case for voice recording on Instagram. Also, closing non-essential background apps can improve your device’s performance and thus improve app functionality as well.

A nifty iOS feature (available on some Android devices) is that an orange light or dot will flash in your status bar whenever an app is using the microphone.

Therefore, you can manually and individually delete background apps via your recent apps or the app switcher. This way you can troubleshoot and see if a specific app is causing your microphone for Instagram not working.

Also, we recommend restarting your device (Step 4), which has a similar effect of killing any background apps that may be using your device microphone.

4. Reboot your device

“Have you tried turning it on and off again?”. You may have heard this before, and we hear it all the time. Perhaps in this case, for once, this can actually be effective.

So, we recommend restarting your device, which is another effective and easy way to kill all background processes. Hence, it has an effect similar to the previous step where it can prevent another app using the device microphone from running.

Besides, this step can also speed up the navigation of the app since you have freed up more system resources and processing power.

Therefore, the steps for doing this should be simple:

For Android

First, press and hold your device’s power button until a menu appears. Then tap on the Restart option and wait.

For iOS

For iOS

First, open the Settings app and tap General. Next, select Next software update to check for pending updates.

8. Test and improve your internet connection

Needless to say, to send or load messages on Instagram, let alone voice memos, a stable and sufficient internet connection is an important requirement. So if your internet connection is weak or keeps dropping connection, it can be a reason why your Instagram voice message is not sending, playing or working properly.

Overall, you need the internet to connect to the servers as well as transmit your outgoing voice memos and load the incoming messages.

9. Enable microphone access for the Instagram app

As mentioned, to use Instagram’s voice messaging feature, the app understandably needs the necessary permissions for the device’s microphone 🎤. Thus, this acts as a security barrier so that only apps you’ve allowed use that resource or peripheral.

But don’t worry, you can set it so that the apps only use it when needed and not always. Of course, apps must not unknowingly eavesdrop on your daily conversations! 😳

Usually, when you use the voice messaging feature or record videos in the app (especially for the first time), you’ll get a message asking if you want to give Instagram access to your microphone. Therefore, you should select OK or Settings at the prompt and enable from there.

However, you may still need to quickly double-check this setting to make sure it’s actually enabled. So, the following steps show how to manually enable these microphone permissions in your system settings:

For Android

The steps below apply to the latest versions of Android, but older versions have almost identical steps.

First, open the Settings app. You can also find this quickly by sliding down the navigation panel or notification menu and tapping the gear icon ⚙️ in the top right corner of the panel. After that select Apps and notifications (on some devices this may also be called Application manager). Select Instagram here.

Then select Permissions and under Denied select Microphone. We need to make sure that permission to access the device’s microphone is enabled.

So choose either Allow or Allow while using the app.

For iOS

First, open the Settings app. Scroll down and select Instagram.

Then, under Allow Instagram access, turn on the switch next to Microphone.

Note: You may find that these permissions were already enabled. In this case, we recommend updating the settings by toggling the switch off and on again.

10. Check screen time limit settings

This is another setting often overlooked by iOS users who are experiencing microphone issues 🎙️ where Instagram voice messages are not sending or playing properly.

Basically, this setting affects how the Instagram app accesses your device’s microphone. So, under Screen Time settings, you’ll notice the content and privacy restrictions that can prevent newer apps from accessing your device’s microphone if configured incorrectly.

Usually these restrictions are not a big problem as they are disabled by default. However, we recommend checking these settings again.

Therefore, the following steps are to check Screen Time Limit settings on your iOS device:

First, select the “Screen Time” option in the “Settings” app. After that, select Content and Privacy Restrictions.

Next, select Microphone.

Then, with Allow Changes enabled, turn on the switch next to Instagram.

11. Disconnect any wireless or wired headphones and turn off Bluetooth

It’s worth noting that audio is often recorded with this device’s microphone when your device is connected to an external headset 🎧 or speakers 🔊, whether wired or wireless. So if the microphone on this device has a hardware issue, it can further degrade the quality of the recorded audio. 12. Test your microphone with other apps

To verify if there is indeed a hardware issue, we recommend testing the device microphone with other apps that use it. So, if your microphone isn’t working on Instagram, it could be the case with other similar apps as well. This will also help you troubleshoot the overall microphone quality.

Therefore, we recommend using your device’s default voice recorder app or Voice Memos on iOS for this purpose. Since this app is optimized for use with the device microphone, it therefore serves as a great test subject.

Open and use this app to record your voice, then play the recording to identify quality loss or breaks.

Apart from that, you can try the voice memo feature in other messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, etc.

All of these tests can help you determine if your default microphone is sufficient for voice messaging on Instagram. If not, you might have better luck with an external microphone (Step 13), which can give you better quality audio recording.

13. Use an external microphone

Suppose you realize from the previous step that your device’s microphone just doesn’t cut it for voice messages on Instagram. In this case, you can try using a different microphone, even if you have it lying around your house. This step is for further troubleshooting if there is a hardware issue with your default device microphone.

You can even use a headset for this purpose, which will likely have a built-in microphone. For iOS users, you can use the standard microphone that comes with every iPhone. That being said, a pair of AirPods should also be a great test subject!

Overall, if you find that those external mics do a better job, they can be the perfect replacement for voice messaging on Instagram. This also gives you cleaner and sharper audio quality.

14. Try sending a voice memo on another device or Instagram account

If none of the above solutions worked, there could be a problem with your device again. So, this step is for identifying or fixing that particular hardware issue.

Unfortunately, you cannot try the voice messaging feature on the Instagram website as this feature has not yet been adopted. Instead, you can try logging into the same Instagram account but on a different device and test sending or playing voice messages.

If the voice features are still not working, the next few steps will definitely help!

Otherwise, assume that you only have this problem on a specific device and none of the above steps worked. We recommend that you contact the original manufacturer of your device for further closures and necessary corrections.

In addition, you can take a step in a different direction and try to send or play voice messages on another Instagram account. This will help you identify and fix an account error that is causing an issue with your Instagram mic or voicemail. 15. Clear Instagram app cache

The more you interact with the Instagram app, in this case by playing and loading voice messages, the app saves data or cache. So, with this cache built up, the app can quickly load those messages next time you want to play them. Therefore, these messages do not need to be downloaded again from scratch.

But not only voice messages but also other interactions in the Instagram app can cause these cache files to take up a large chunk of your internal storage as well. From there, these caches can become corrupted and the available memory is reduced at the same time, leading to app bugs. 👾

As you might have guessed, if the “lift to listen” audio message is misbehaving, you can often solve the problem by removing the case or a third-party protective layer from the iPhone. But for some users who tend to drop their devices, going without cases doesn’t always make sense. As such, Raise to Listen troubleshooting is difficult for those of us who rely on protective cases. Another option is to simply disable the Raise to Listen and Raise to Respond feature for now and prevent erroneous listening or response behavior.

Open the Settings app and go to Messages. Under Audio, scroll down and toggle the Raise to Listen switch to the OFF position

How to listen to your voicemail messages on Android

1. Turn on your phone and open the Phone app.

Press and hold your phone’s power button to turn it on. Once you’ve unlocked your main screen, tap on the phone app to launch it.

2. Access the dial pad.

You need to enter the Phone app’s dial pad as if you were calling a real person. To do this, tap the keypad icon at the bottom of the screen.

3. Call your voicemail system.

Call your voicemail account by entering their phone number using the keys on the dialpad, and then pressing the green call button. Or you can just press and hold the 1 key as a shortcut.

4. Enter your voicemail system password.

You’ll be prompted to enter your voicemail account passcode if you’ve set one (which I hope you have). Use the keys on the keypad to enter it.

5. Check your voicemail inbox.

Once you’re in your voicemail system, you may need to do something a little different than this tutorial, depending on your telecom provider and/or voicemail client. However, the general options you will have should be pretty similar.

Anyway, the first thing you should do is tap the button on the dial pad that will allow you to check your messages. In this case it is 1.

6. After listening to each message, decide what you want to do with it.

The most recent voicemail message you received should play. When it’s ready, you have a few choices about what you want to do with the message. Usually these include deleting the message, saving it, getting more information about it, and so on. Press the button on the keypad that corresponds to your desired action.

In this case you can press 7 to delete the message or press 9 to save it. If you want more options for using the message, press 0.

Deleting or saving the message will play the next most recent voicemail message. From there, go back to the beginning of this step.

However, if you want to listen to more options for the current message, you’ll get additional choices. This usually includes playing the message, finding out more information about the message (including when it was sent and by whom), or canceling the review of your messages and returning to your voicemail system’s main menu.

Again, just press the button on the keypad that represents the option you want. In this case you can press 4 to play the message again, 5 to hear more information about the message, or * to stop checking the messages and return to the main menu of your voicemail system. If you don’t choose this last option, return to the beginning of this step.

7. When finished, hang up to exit your voicemail system.

If you have no more messages to retrieve or have otherwise checked your voicemail, press the red end call button to exit your voicemail system and end the call.
