Dollies Making a Difference
Do you remember the toys from your childhood that you treasured and cherished? A stuffed animal or doll that you carried everywhere that made you feel safe and loved? I think most of us can form a picture of that one special toy that we loved as kids and more importantly how it made us feel. A few weeks ago, when a mutual friend told me about the work that Dollies Making A Difference does, I knew I needed to learn more about the inspiration behind this amazing and very special organization.
Earlier this week I had an amazing call with co-founder Cindy Simon who shared with me the heartwarming story of this amazing organization that simply believes that giving is receiving.
Charity Matters: When and how did you start Dollies Making a Difference?
Cindy Simon: In 2010 I was back in the East and had just read an article about a group of women who had gotten together to make dolls for the children suffering from the Haiti earthquake. These East Coast women were inspired by Dianne Sawyer’s coverage of the earthquake and knew it the moment they saw Dianne Sawyer pull a doll out of a pile of rubble and say, “Look, a little girl lost her doll.” that they had to act.
The article about these women inspired me to take action. I called them, went over to see what they were doing, learned their process and said I wanted to help. When I got back to Los Angeles I called some friends and asked them to help me make 500 dolls for the children of Haiti. My dear friend and non-profit co-founder Dorothy Miyake was the first to help. She had a large group of friends who were smart and we decided to get together in my dining room every Wednesday to make these dolls.
Charity Matters: What was your goal when you started Dollies Making a Difference?
Cindy Simon: The mission was simple, to help the boys and girls of Haiti by providing homemade dolls and teddy bears, but we quickly realized that we weren’t about a doll, we were about so much more. Our mission is that giving equals receiving, and we quickly learned that with the three Cs:
Community, the group of women who have sat around my dinner table every Wednesday, sharing and caring for one another for over a decade. We have been through health issues, death, birth and life together. We are a community.
Connection, we do not ship our dolls and teddy bears through large organizations. We find ambassadors who can be people we know or small non-profit or church organizations. We require that each of our handmade toys is hand-delivered by an ambassador to a child and that the human connection makes the experience special for both the child and the person delivering the dolls.
Comfort is what the child gets from having and holding their own doll or teddy bear.
Charity Matters: When do you know you’ve made a difference?
Cindy Simon: We know we’ve made a difference when we make a child smile when the person bringing the doll is moved, and that’s made a difference for all of us who make these dolls.
Charity Matters: What drives you to continue this work 10 years later?
Cindy Simon: This work has given me a passion, a purpose, made me feel valuable and relevant. It’s fun to be connected to a variety of people and organizations around the world. More than that, it renews my belief that there are many good people in our world helping people they will never know.
Charity Matters: Tell us about your success and impact?
Cindy Simon: What started as a small project has grown into over 13,000 handmade dolls and teddy bears that are hand delivered to over 300 organizations around the world. In addition, with the funds we raised, we gave over $107,000 to other nonprofit organizations in the form of grants.
Charity Matters: What life lessons did you learn from this experience?
Cindy Simon: Every day I am reminded how many good people and organizations there are in the world. I think I underestimated the power of community and what happens with the connection and community that we have in making the dolls, it’s the sharing that just happens.
This journey has made me more compassionate to all the needs out there. I have learned that we can all help others and especially those we will never meet.

Dollies Making a Difference in Haiti
Before we left for Haiti, the ladies at Dollies Making a Difference decided to continue their support for the children of Haiti by making dozens of dollies for the children we work with. Dollies Making a Difference (http://dolliesmakingadifference.com/) began their work after the Haiti earthquake over three years ago, sending more than 600 dollies to children who may have lost everything. Since then, the women of West Los Angeles have brought joy to children around the world where disasters have brought pain. From Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Burkina Faso to Israel, North Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand, these women have tirelessly poured their love into the projects they undertake.
In Haiti, Aid Still Required supports a children’s program in Cap Haitien with over 100 children who
otherwise they would have very little access to safe places to play, learn and grow. When we attended the meeting with the trainers who run the program and met the children, we were able to supply the dolls that Dollies Making a Difference had provided. It was clear that they loved the presents.
However, these weren’t the only children to receive Dollies. After the earthquake there was a wave of children who were either orphaned or abandoned by their parents when they could no longer take care of them. As a result, orphanages were in high demand, struggling with the demands of food, clothing, and education for so many.

the Dollies, there was both excitement and a bit of shock. Receiving something of their own, a new toy that belonged to them, was a beautiful experience.
