How to install Flashing Tape

Applying self-adhesive masking tape is a relatively simple process with four main steps.

Start preparing your surface. Trex Protect Joist & Beam Tape is applied to horizontal and vertical surfaces. Trex Protect Tape comes in two widths, making it convenient to apply to double joists and joists. Use 1–5/8” (4.13 cm) joist tape for joists and 3–1/8” (7.94 cm) joist tape for all double joists.

For best results, Trex Protect Tape should be applied in a temperature range of 10˚C (50˚F) or higher. Observe processing temperatures. If installing in cold weather or wet joists, staple Trex Protect to hold it in place while installing decking. The tape will seal when the product heats above 4.5°C. Trex Protect works well in high temperatures.

When dragging deck boards onto the deck, a piece of plywood or waferboard can be used to overhang the edge of the deck. This prevents the product from rolling up and pulling up off the beam.

Clean the beam surface and make sure it is dry and free from dirt. Open the package and remove the backing while applying the tape directly to the surface. Run your hand over the band and press firmly onto the bars. After covering the joists and joists with tape, use a utility knife or scissors to cut the tape to length.
