One of the first things I did when I arrived in New York was to sit down for a manicure at Bling Bling, a nail salon in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. When I got my first set of fire engine red nails after six months, I realized there was something mystical about the whole process. Queens Cleopatra and Nefertiti were celebrated for wearing colored nail polishes in the 14th century. The royal ladies opted for a brilliant red because the primary shade indicated (and still does) power, according to Nails Magazine. Modern acrylic paints as we know them today are less than 70 years old and not necessarily a black invention, but black women have undoubtedly played an enduring role in the cultural emergence of artificial nails.

There is still an unfounded and classic belief that black women are poor with acrylics. New York Times Magazine contributor Nikole Hannah-Jones was bullied into silence by Gay Talese, a respected white reporter who was much older than her. The two were speaking at a conference at Boston University in 2016 when Talese harassed Hannah-Jones about the validity of her employment and then insulted her by asking if she would leave earlier to get her nails done.

Classism also feeds into larger stereotypes of Black women, such as the notion that we are Jezebels (a fabricated Black female hypersexuality created by white men to justify raping slaves), and our style choices reflect this . In Lindsey Pieper’s fantastic 2015 article on normalized white, Olympic runner Florence Griffith-Joyner’s trials and triumphs highlighted the media’s sometimes erotic obsession with her nails. Joyner’s acrylic paints have been discussed almost as much as her athletic ability, and she has been portrayed as an overly sexual creature whose claws were designed to attract the attention of others.

Many don’t share my view of nails as badges of honor or literal extensions of black female spirits. For example, this forum asks if acrylic nails are “trashy” and if they belong exclusively to the underclass that assumes fake nails are less beautiful than filed ones. It is also a reference to the role that race plays in the reception of acrylic paints. Black women’s style, which developed alongside significant factors such as temperature, slavery, religion, and basic creative expression, is viewed as costume. We are viewed as characters that can be reproduced and repackaged, with a white stamp that makes our lifestyle acceptable.

White women wear acrylics when they try to imitate us or make fun of us. For example, Katy Perry’s extremely racist video for “This Is How We Do” sees the singer pulling off her best black-girl impression — complete with baby hair, colorful cornrows, and watermelon snouts — while flaunting her pink acrylic paints. Miley Cyrus’ “Black Period,” which she said no longer suited her, is another perfect example of the culture of black women being stolen and then abused. Cyrus piled on bulky gold jewels, twerked and sported red square-tipped nails.

Recently, Allure ran an article about Kylie Jenner’s “crazy acrylic nails” going “mainstream.” Yet black women are still quizzed, criticized, and labeled as ghettos because of their unique nail styles. The Ghetto Red Hot website has an entire section that jokes about black women’s nails and tells us not to wear fancy designs and “unnecessarily” long nails. I once saw a man ask a bank teller how she typed with her fingernails. Though he was smiling and not being malicious, he still felt comfortable asking a black woman about her jewelry.

When black women are excluded from the narrative of the style’s evolution, we are robbed of our place in the story and essentially silenced. To break this up, I’ve compiled a short list of some powerful black women who have had their nails freshly coated and kept long.

Donyale Luna, the first black woman to cover Vogue in Twen Magazine in 1966.

2. Millie Jackson

The Gold Seller singer rocks red nails on the cover of her 1979 album A Moment’s Pleasure.

3. Florence Griffith-Joyner

Flo-Jo worked as a hairstylist and nail artist while training for the 1988 Olympics. As the Trials and the actual Olympics rolled around, she was well aware of how she could kill her own acrylics. She often took to the track in four- to six-inch rhinestone-studded and colorful acrylic sets.

4. Coko by SWV

She was famous for her gospel-influenced soprano voice in the early 1990s, but her nails were also conversation starters. In an interview with StyleBlazer, she explained how she began growing her nails as a form of subtle disobedience. Raised in a strictly religious home, Coko was told she would “go to hell” for her nail length, but she continued to let them grow. After joining SWV, her nails “took a life of their own” and began to draw attention. Although she has since discarded them, they will go down in history as emblems of glory.

We fearlessly create our own cool, and as much as people resist and complain, the masses still follow our lead. We rarely have to look beyond ourselves to look for the next big thing in fashion, art, or literature. Instead, we follow our own trail and thus construct our own ideals of beauty. Our collective confidence has and will continue to skyrocket as we are able to outsmart any naysayer and move forward on our journey to self-love. While it is flattering that black women hold so much influential power, at its core, the appropriation of acrylic nails is still negative because the important and rich history of acrylic is erased. Non-black women can reap the benefits of good looks while enduring little to none of the same criticisms that black women face. Regardless, we know our collective history, and we will honor and share it as we let our light and nails shine forever and ever.

I recently ventured into a 12 year old’s den. Immersed in girlhood knick-knacks, Danielle’s room contained all the essentials: small pink bins, large pink bins, heart-shaped bins with glittery earrings, a “Danielle” stamp, “Danielle” in lower case, colored wooden blocks on the door, hair ties, tiny keys, tiny ones Locks, slightly smaller-than-normal powder blue deodorants, bendable sticks, and lots of velvety pouches. I breathed in hair products in the air, fruit-scented lotions, and powdery substances—nectars I once applied reverently.

Recalling my own products for teens, I picked, poked, and examined kiwi-flavored lip glosses, beaded pins, and colorful bracelets. Open, close. Sniff, sniff. Ahhh, a hanging wire basket full of nail polishes. I dropped into an inflatable chair and painted my toenails in a thick coat of dark and shimmery purple.

I had dumped nail accessories from my produce stash a few years earlier and relegated them to a corner under the sink with Clinique Bonus lipsticks just for Halloween. But now, reinvented in a thick purple enamel called Fetish, I boldly waved my sockless fingers. My 12-year-old hostess offered a tepid confirmation of my nail polish. “Whatever,” she said with the usual teenage nonchalance, but I was intoxicated.

I showed my varnished toes. I’ve shown them to people who probably didn’t want to see them. “Fetish,” I confided in him. Between the streaks I inspected the nail decoration in each corner. “Fetish?” I wondered.

Newly made aware of nail colors and lengths, I watched a Rite-Aid cashier use 2-inch acrylics to stab a wayward dime to no avail. With the dexterity of a grape and tightly gnawed nubs (neurosis prevents nail growth), I was fascinated. How did she handle the everyday coin maneuvers with two-inch long claws? More important why? Pure masochism? Excited about the challenge?

Sure, it’s a gas to use chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant, but why keep your manual dexterity hanging around everywhere you go? There has to be a silver lining. Could there be a use for long nails? Maybe a more fulfilling back scratcher?

My thoughts on nail design eventually gave way to full-blown investigation. The seemingly trivial fingernail is actually a whole world of signs and symbols dangling from the edges of our bodies. Like other costume elements, fingernail designs express who we are and what we want to be.

We make fingernail fashion decisions based on our cultural aesthetics, values, social class, and ideas about our role in society. The Russian folklorist Petr Bogatyrev wrote: “To understand the social functions of costumes, we must learn to read them as signs, just as we learn to read and understand languages.”

How should we read glued-on rhinestones, dangling nail jewelry, freehand nail art, airbrushed designs, acrylic nail sculpts, and green glitter? The endless possibilities in nail decor raise some crucial questions.

What occasions justify stick-on jewelry? Why do we wear polishes called Whip Cream? Buffed and jaded? French manicure from France? Or just another example of francophilia? Is red for everyone? Why the long nails?

Gene Lakin, who teaches fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, says long fingernails can be status symbols. “Long fingernails in 20th-century America may indicate a recreational course. By wearing long fingernails, people show that they don’t have to do physical work. Likewise [in the 19th century] a pale complexion was associated with wealth because it did not mean having to work in the fields.”

“Elegant clothing fulfills its purpose of elegance not only because it is expensive, but also because it is the insignia of leisure time,” wrote Thorsten Veblen in his classic “The Theory of the Leisure Class” (1899). “It not only shows that the carrier can consume a relatively large value, but at the same time argues that it consumes without producing.” Like the tight corset of Veblen’s day, long nails now signal which women are too rich and too feminine (who don’t want their little darling to break a nail off) to engage in manual labour.

Ironically, long nails are no longer popularly considered elite. “In the 1980s, long nails were a status symbol, but in the ’90s a lot of women thought shorter nails were classier,” says Lauren Breeze, a marketing rep at nail polish empire OPI. “Everything was bigger in the 80s – big jewelry, big shoulder pads. It was the ‘Dynasty’ era and long nails went with that excess.” But today’s Gen X fashion and culture judges have disowned that heritage of extravagance and redirected the style to thrift-store polyester. America’s aesthetic shift from ’80s excess (ridiculously extravagant consumerism equals beautiful) to ’90s excess grunge is reflected in nail length.

However, the trend towards short nails has not penetrated all corners of American society. Each group has different ideas about what constitutes appropriate conspicuous use; Therefore, the canons of beauty vary. While the fashion elite may see long nails as declassified, many working-class women prefer them. As one Chicago manicurist sums it up: “Middle-income women might think long nails are ‘tacky and impractical,’ but working-class women find them ‘cute.’ ”

In “Hope in a Jar,” a social history of American beauty culture, historian Kathy Peiss notes that women use cosmetics with “many different, conflicting purposes: to play lady or babe, to look older or younger, to mean something shared identities as ‘American’ and ‘respectable’ or to invoke class and ethnic distinctions.”

Seasoned cosmetic companies are tapping into this market to express themselves by giving polishes expressive names and colors that target every demographic nook and cranny.

“Respectable” guys can go for traditional pink, puke, beige colors with Hallmark-unoriginal names like Dusk, Bouquet, and Sand (not nearly as inspiring as Fetish), but seductresses might prefer long, red nails.

Long and red can be sexy – even dangerously sexy, as shown on “The Alarmingly Long and Dangerous Nail Web Page,” which features photos of women showing off their long, red nails and sells videotapes of women with long nails, who do God knows what (fetish).

However, femme fatales can opt for bolder alternatives to the classically sexy red nails. It’s easy to snag buddies with Snow Me White (a guaranteed head turner with a Lewinsky-style blue dress), Sheer Hot, Sheer Sizzle (note the heat motif), or, for the recently deflowered, Not in Kansas Anymore. . . Red.

But the expression of modern nail polishes is not just limited to sexuality or prudishness. Rebels Lacquer on rebellious colors like . . . Rebellious (made accessible to international outsiders by a French translation, “Rebelle”), Wanted. . . Red or Alive (“a hot-blooded red inspired by the infamous dueling of the Wild West”) and Gun Metal (for the NRA’s haute couture). Finally polishes for Thelma and Louise.

Nonconformists might prefer the visual violence of greens like Holy Guacamole Frost, Toad, and Daisy the Pig (marketing ploy escapes me). Another rebelliously repulsive color is Moray Madness, which looks remarkably like snot.

The only definition I could find for “moray eel” was “any of various, often voracious, sea eels of the family Muraenidae, found primarily in coastal tropical waters” (the American Heritage Dictionary). Could this ravenous eel have reddish-yellow fins studded with white glitter? What does Moray Madness express? A passion for eels? Will other eel fans flock? Fetish?

These bold and ugly colors express the ’90s zeitgeist by mimicking traditional girly primping. Ideal for Gen X college students and midlife crisis victims alike, these colors are perfect for protesting a mundane world.

Though they’ve lost some of the rebellion’s cachet since being co-opted by Hollywood hipsters, these colors still offer the best subversive end-of-finger outlet for aspiring iconoclasts.

My personal favorite is Hard Candy’s aluminum silver polish called Trailer Trash. What could be nicer than adding a touch of irony to an otherwise unaffected look? With a gentle brushstroke, even the WASPiest intern can be quickly transformed into a member of the exploited proletariat.

As Adam Gopnik put it in a New York article, “Anything [can] gain status by being made ironic.”

Thinking back to Danielle’s polishes, it makes sense that a 12-year-old trying to decide who she is would be immersed in a vast and diverse collection of shades. Would she wear Rock the Vote Red, Sushi, Girly, Greed, Miss Understood, or a chewed, polish-less nub?
