You may be tempted to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pens, and other reusable and disposable vaping devices) to ease the transition from traditional cigarettes to quitting smoking. But is smoking e-cigarettes (aka vaping) better for you than using tobacco products? Can e-cigarettes help you quit smoking for good? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, shares health information about vaping.

1: Vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it’s still not safe.

Recent evidence suggests that NVP usage and sales are price sensitive, such that an increase in NVP price is associated with a decrease in NVP sales and usage prevalence.3–7 NVP sales and use are not only price sensitive, but also price-sensitive to the prices of other nicotine products. A change in the relative prices of nicotine products such as cigarettes, cigars, NVPs (disposables, open system devices, closed system devices) may result in users switching to lower priced alternatives.3-5

The relative price of NVPs compared to cigarettes is likely to be an important factor in the growth of NVPs. However, limited empirical work has measured and described the prices of NVP products relative to cigarettes in different markets. A review of global data found that NVP users’ cost impressions were inconsistent, leading some to think NVPs saved money while others believed NVPs cost more money.8 Jackson et al. 9 used a household survey in England and found spending on nicotine products among NVP users is about a third of that of cigarette smokers.9

Liber et al. (2017) used data from several countries and compared the prices of NVPs related to combustible cigarettes. They found that global NVP prices are generally much higher than cigarettes, while e-liquid (ml) costs less, especially in high-income countries.

For the US study, most of the data on cigarette and NVP prices comes from Nielsen Scanner Track, where studies show that NVP price trends have been declining between 2012 and 2016 and price differentials between NVP devices and cigarettes have narrowed .3 10 11

Liber et al. (2017) used data from Euromonitor International, which provides only a select sample of NVP product prices, and it is uncertain whether their single-use NVP and e-liquid prices can be representative of all product prices in each country.12 Nielsen Scanner Track Data has the sales information from participating retailers reflecting only about 1/3 or less of NVP purchases.13

Our study extends previous studies reporting the price of NVPs by comparing the self-reported prices of NVPs and cigarettes by NVP users and smokers in the four countries (Australia (AU), Canada (CA), England (EN) and the USA) used. , which accounts for a majority of global NVP sales. Using self-reported prices allows us to collect prices from NVPs sourced from various purchase locations (e.g. retailers, vape shops and online).
