Du`a after Wudu

All praise is due to Allah.

Du’as to be said at the beginning of wudu and after its completion have been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Du’a before Wudu

Regarding what is to be said at the beginning, the only thing that has been narrated is mentioning the name of Allah by saying Bismillah (in the name of Allah).

The proof of this is the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “There is no wudu for anyone who does not mention in it the name of Allaah.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 25. He said: Regarding this subject was narrated it from ‘Aishah, Abu Sa’id, Abu Hurayrah, Sahl ibn Sa’d and Anas. Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: I do not know of any hadith with a jayyid isnad on this subject. (Al-Tirmidhi)

The hadith was classified as saheeh by al-Albani in Sahih al-Tirmidhi.

In the answer to Question No. 21241, we have stated that this hadith is one on which the scholars have differed as to its validity.

Al-Nawawi narrated in al-Majmu’ (1/385) that al-Bayhaqi said:

“The most solid record of saying bismillah (for wudu) is the hadith of Anas, according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) put his hand in the water vessel and then said: “Do wudu in the name of Allaah.” [Anas] said: I saw the water springing up between his fingers and the people did wudu until the last of them had done wudu, and there were almost seventy men. Its isnad is jayyid and it was cited as evidence by al-Bayhaqi in his book Ma’rifat al-Sunan wa’l-Athar; he classed the other ahadith as da’eef (weak).”

Du’a after Wudu

Regarding what is said after wudu, a number of hadiths have been narrated in this regard.

From the reports it can be concluded that he said:

Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-allah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu. Allahumm aj’alni min al-tawwabina waj’alni min al-mutatahhirina, subhanaka allahumma wa bi hamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka

(I testify that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner or partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. O Allah, make me one of those who repent and make me one of those who purify themselves Glory and glory be to You, O Allah, I testify that there is no god but You, I ask Your forgiveness and I repent to You).

Muslim (234) narrated from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is none among you who makes wudu and does it nun , then says: Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu was rasuluhu (I testify that there is no god but Allah alone without partner or partner and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger), but the eight gates of Paradise will be opened to him and he will enter through whichever he will.” Narrated by Muslim, 234.

Al-Tirmidhi (55) added: “Allahumm aj’alni min al-tawwabeena waj’alni min al-mutatahhireena (O Allah, make me of those who repent and make me of those who purify themselves ).”

This addition was classified as da’if (weak) by al-Hafiz ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him), who said: This addition narrated from al-Tirmidhi is not proved as part of this hadith. Final quote from al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyyah, 2/19.

Al-Albani classed it as saheeh in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi. Ibn al-Qayyim stated in Zad al-Ma’ad that it is proven to be from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Regarding the phrase “subhanaka allahumma wa bi hamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka” (Glory and glory be to You, O Allah, I testify that there is no god but You, I beg your forgiveness and I repent to you) this was narrated from al-Nasai in ‘Aml al-Yawm wal-Laylah and from al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him). The narrators were divided as to whether the hadith could be attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or whether these were the words of Abu Sa’id (may Allaah be pleased with him).

Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“The Isnad is undoubtedly solid, rather they disagreed as to whether the text could be attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or not (i.e. whether it was Marfu’ or Mawquf). Al-Nasai always judges on the basis of error on the side of caution, hence he was wrong. But according to the method of al-Nawawi, according to Ibn al-Salah and others, it is more likely to be Marfu.” (Al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyyah, 2/21)

It was classed as Sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib (225) and al-Silsilah al-Sahihah (2333). (See Tamam al-Minnah, pp. 94-98)

Du`a during wudu

These are the du’as narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to be said in wudu. As for saying du’a while washing the different parts of the body, nothing of the sort has been proved by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Al-Nawawi said in al-Adhkar (p. 30):

“As for the du’aas that are said when washing different parts of the body in wudu, nothing of the sort has been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).”

Ibn al-Qayyim said in Zad al-Ma’ad (1/195):

“He is not narrated to have said anything in his wudu except saying Bismillah. Any hadith that speaks of du’as to be said in wudu is false and fabricated. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said none of these things and he did not teach them to his Ummah. Nothing is narrated from him except saying Bismillah at the beginning and Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu. allahumm aj’alni min al-tawwabina waj’alni min al-mutatahhirina (I testify that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner or partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. O Allah, make me one of those who repent and make me one of those who purify themselves) afterwards.

According to another hadith narrated in Sunan al-Nasai, one of the things that can also be said after wudu is: “Subhanaka Allahumma wa bi hamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka (honor and glory be to you, O Allah, I testify that there is no god but you, I ask your forgiveness and I repent to you).

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daimah (5/221):

It is not proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said any du’a during wudu. What the common people say in dua when they wash each part of the body is an innovation (bid’ah), such as when washing the face to say: ‘O Allah, make my face white on the day faces turn black “; or when washing hands: “O Allah, put my book (record of my deeds) in my right hand, and do not put my book in my left hand”, and other du’as said while washing the other parts of the body in wudu.”

Dua to Wudu with transliteration and meaning

Before performing our prayers, we must perform wudhu or ablution. Allah s.w.t. says in the Quran:

يَا أَيُّهَ اآمَنُو إِذَ إِ ا ا ا ا فَ فَ إِ ا ا ا ا ا وَ وَ وَأَرْجُ إِ إِ إِ إِ ا ا Moreَى

“O you who have believed, when you rise to prayer, wash your face and forearms to the elbows and wipe your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.”

(Surat al-Maidah, 5:6)

Ablution or wudhu is a ritual purification in Islam and an essential step in performing our prayers. Without them our prayers will not be accepted as in a hadith of our Prophet s.a.w. mentioned:

لتُقْبَ صَلَةُ إِذَ إِذَ إِذَ حَتَّى حَتَّى يَتَوَضَّأَ The prayer would not be accepted by anyone in a state of impurity (Sahih Muslim)

Spiritual Benefits of Wudu

Performing wudhu itself is an act of worship. It has many benefits as mentioned in several hadiths. Such as:

الْوُضُء خخررج trip

Pray 2 rakats after wudu

A famous hadith telling us the benefits of praying at least two rakaat of prayer after wudhu said the Prophet s.a.w. asked Bilal r.a. during Subuh prayer time:

يَا بِلاَ حَدِّثْنِي عَمَ عَمِ عَمِ عَمِ ا ϕ إِسْ ، فَإِنِّي نَعْ نَعْ بَيْنَ ا الْجَنَّةِ. قَالَ: مَلْتُ عَمَ أَرْجَى َمْ َمْ َمْ أَتَطَهَّرْ سَ سَ طُهُورً َيْ َيْ نَهَ نَهَ إِلَّ بِذَلَّيْتُ ا مَ ِي أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ أُصَ “O Bilal, tell me about the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I have heard your footsteps before me in paradise.” Bilal replied, “I have done nothing worth mentioning except that I, when whenever I performed my ablution day or night, after this ablution prayed as much as was written for me.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

What to say before Wudu?

As with any other thing we do, we should start wudhu by having the right intention which is wudhu for Allah s.w.t. Then we can continue the other steps by reciting Basmalah:

بِسمِ الله Bismillah In the name of Allah

After wudhu, we are encouraged to recite several duas:

1. Dua for witnessing the unity of Allah and that the Prophet s.a.w. His messenger is

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shariika lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasuuluhu I testify that there is no god but Allah, the One , there is no companion with Him and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. (Sahih Muslim)

2. Dua for being among the penitent and those who purify themselves

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَ مِنَ ا وَاجْعَ مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ Allahummaj’alnii Minat-Tawwabina Waj’alni Minal-Mutatohhirin o Allah! Make me of those who repent and of those who purify themselves. (Jami’ At-Tirmizi)

3. Dua for forgiveness and repentance

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ Subhanaka-llahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa Anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilaik Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise be upon You. I testify that there is none worthy of worship but you. I beg your forgiveness and turn to you in remorse. (Sunan Abi Daud)

Hadith on Ablution: Great reward for perfect wudu and supplication

‘Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever performs ablution in the best way, saying: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah alone, without partners , and I testify that Muhammad is his servant and messenger. O Allah, make me of those who repent and make me of those who purify themselves.” Then the eight gates of Paradise will be opened to him and he can enter wherever he pleases.”
