Can he say du ‘aa’ between the two prostrations in words other than those narrated from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)?
All praise is due to Allah.
It is better for the worshiper to say du’a’ between the two prostrations in the words narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as it is from an-Nasaa’i (1145) of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say between the two prostrations: “Rabb ighfir li, Rabb ighfir li (Lord forgive me, Lord forgive me).”
Classified as saheeh by al-Albaani in Sahih Sunan an-Nasaa’i.
At-Tirmidhi (262) narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say between the two prostrations: “Allahumma aghfir li wa’rhamni wa’jburni wa ‘hdini wa’rzuqni (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, console me, guide me and provide me with sustenance).”
Classified as saheeh by al-Albaani in Sahih Sunan at-Tirmidhi.
With regard to adding to the du’a’ narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) or using other than the narrated words, it seems that it is permissible because that is the Fall is is an attitude (of prayer) in which du’aa’ is allowed. However, it is preferable – as mentioned above – to confine it to what has been narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and say du’a’ in other words than those narrated when prostrating or before speaking were the salam at the end of the prayer. Muslim (479) narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “And as for prostration, strive for du’a’, for it deserves one answer (from your Lord).”
Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Then he should rise from prostration and say: “Rabb ighfir li, Rabb ighfir li, Rabb ighfir li (Lord forgive me, Lord forgive me, Lord forgive me)” as the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to do. And it is mustahabb to say along with it: “Allahumma aghfir li wa’rhamni wa’hdini wa’jburni wa’rzuqni wa ‘aafini (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, comfort me, give me sustenance and grant me prosperity)” because it is proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say this. And if he wants to add something to that, there is nothing wrong with it, such as saying: O Allah, forgive me and my parents; O Allah, admit me to paradise and save me from the fire; Oh Allah, correct my heart and deeds and so on. But he should offer much du’a’ for forgiveness between the two prostrations as narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Mukhtaar ash-Shanqeeti (may Allaah preserve him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to ask for welfare between the two prostrations because that is the place of du’. aa’. The scholars had two opinions on this. Some of them said, “It is a place for du’a’, so it is prescribed for a person to offer whatever du’a’ he likes regarding his affairs in this world and the Hereafter. Others said: He should confine it to what has been narrated (from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)), and this view is stronger. But if he hasn’t memorized it, for example if he is one of the common people, there is nothing wrong with saying whatever he can.
The reason he is allowed to say what he can is because the sunnah consists of two things: the first is saying du’a and the second is the specific wording. If he is unable to say the exact wording, then the Sunna is to be asked from Allah. This is the majority view, as more than one scholar attributed it to them. So if he is unable to memorize or does not know the narrated wording, and he says whatever du’aa he can do, such as offering du’aa’ to himself himself and his parents, then there is nothing wrong with that. But it is preferable and better to say the Du’a’ narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
