I had to do a double take when I saw the Amazon reviews for this product. It has a solid 4.8 rating across more than 12,000 reviews. The AeroPress was patented by Alan Adler in 2004. If you were around in the 1980s, you might remember a new type of frisbee in the shape of a flat ring called an aerobie. This was also patented by Mr. Adler. Along with over 40 other inventions. Adler is a true American success story; Before retiring, he taught engineering at Stanford University and is still a sought-after lecturer at places like Stanford, NASA, Google, Caltech, Princeton and many more.

As I mentioned before, European companies like Krups and Braun (De’Longhi), which once prided themselves on keeping their production in Europe, are completely sold out. BUNN couldn’t avoid manufacturing in China entirely, but for an industry pioneer, I’m impressed that they’ve managed to keep so much of their manufacturing at home. From the looks of it, most units in their “Speed ​​Brew” line are still made in Iowa, while certain new models like the CSB1 and the “Heat N’ Brew” are made in China. Avoid those like the plague.

A few years ago I went to Disney World and took my wife and I to dinner at the fancy Victoria and Albert restaurant. When dessert time came, the waiter brought out a giant contraption that looked like it came out of Mr. Wizard’s science lab. It was, without exception, one of the best cups of coffee I’ve had in my life.

I happened upon this Hario coffee maker that works in the same way. The technology is called siphoning and it uses the laws of physics to brew a perfect cup of coffee. It has two glass chambers. The water in the lower chamber is heated and creates steam that fills the upper chamber with the coffee grounds. As the heat is removed, the now cooler lower chamber uses pressure to pull the water back out of the upper chamber through a filter. The result is a bright, rich, and clean cup of coffee.

Yes, it’s a big hassle, but the coffee is superb and a unique conversation piece. Plus, it’s made in Japan, so you know the parts and mechanics are of the highest quality.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Bodum for a while. Most coffee lovers recognize them as one of the most popular kitchen utensil brands. Bodum was founded in 1944 in Copenhagen, Denmark by Peter Bodum and the company relocated to Switzerland in 1978. They became particularly popular in the United States around 2016 when they struck a partnership deal with Starbucks that has since expired.

I know Bodum from the double-walled insulating glass. They were made in Switzerland for years, but in recent years all production has been going to China and the quality has dropped significantly. But consumers who have never experienced the old product continue to buy the new, not realizing what they are missing out on.

As of now, this French Press coffee maker and its version of the vacuum siphon coffee maker are still made in Portugal. But their movement of their iconic double-walled jars makes me suspicious if they plan to do the same with their other product lines. Hopefully not. Until then, they have a permanent place on my list of recommendations.
