After posting net income of $7.4 million in fiscal 1995, Emerson fell back into the red over the next three years. They lost $13.4 million, $24 million and $1.4 million in fiscal years 1996, 1997 and 1998, respectively, on net income of $245.7 million, $178.7 million and $162.7 million.

Grossman, a private investor, along with Oaktree Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based investment firm that held a smaller stake in Emerson Radio, proposed buying Jurick’s stake in the company for more than $14.6 million . The offer was rejected as “insufficient”. [20] Emerson announced in August 1999 that it planned to sell to Oaktree for $28.9 million.

On the day the licensing agreement with Otake expired, Emerson replaced the company with Daewoo Electronics Co. Ltd., which entered into a four-year deal with Emerson to manufacture and sell Emerson and G Clef branded television and video products to US retailer completed . Tonic Electronics (32 percent), Daewoo (22 percent) and Imarflex (12 percent) were the main suppliers. The company was heavily dependent on Wal-Mart Stores, which acquired about 52 percent of its merchandise in fiscal 1999, and Target Stores, Inc., which acquired about 24 percent.

In 2001, Emerson exited the video electronics (TV, DVD, VCR) business and gave 100% of manufacturing operations to Funai, which continued to manufacture and market Emerson consumer video products for Wal-Mart. In January 2003, Emerson announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding appointing the Sanlian Group of Shandong, China as the exclusive distributor of Emerson-branded products through its subsidiary Sanlian Household Electric Appliance Company (SHEAC).[21] The agreement provides for the supply and distribution of Emerson’s product categories through SHEAC’s 200 retail stores and service centers, as well as through its extensive BtoB and BtoC e-commerce network. Sanlian should license the Emerson brand for additional product categories it deems suitable for distribution across China and cooperate with Emerson in the design, development and sourcing of such products.

Windows 10 Modern Standby (Modern Standby) extends the Windows 8.1 Connected Standby power model. Connected Standby, and consequently Modern Standby, allows for an instant on/off user experience, similar to smartphone power models. Just like the phone, the low-power S0 idle model allows the system to remain connected to the network in power saving mode.

Although Modern Standby provides an instant on/off user experience like Connected Standby, Modern Standby is more comprehensive than Windows 8.1’s Connected Standby power model. Modern Standby enables market segments previously limited to the Traditional Sleep (S3) power model to take advantage of the low-power idle model. Example systems include systems based on rotating media and hybrid media (e.g. SSD + HDD or SSHD) and/or a NIC that does not support all previous Connected Standby requirements.

The number of systems that support Modern Standby instead of S3 is increasing over time. The Modern Standby section describes key changes, partner requirements, and best practices for enabling Modern Standby.

Note Modern Standby is available for both the Windows 10 desktop and Windows 10X. Switching between S3 and Modern Standby cannot be done by changing a setting in the BIOS. Switching the power model is not supported in Windows without a full operating system reinstall.

Functional overview of modern standby

A modern standby session encompasses the entire screen-off to screen-on user scenario. However, individual screen-off and sleep segments make up an entire Modern Standby session. These states distinguish periods of quiesced software behavior from periods of long-term low performance. For this reason, Microsoft considers modern hibernation to be equivalent to traditional S3 hibernation, with the added benefit of being able to run value-added software activities on a regular basis.

In Windows 10, low power consumption is achieved by waking up to the lowest power state only when absolutely necessary and allowing software to only run in short, controlled bursts of activity, dramatically reducing the opportunities for software components to run. Windows and the SoC hardware are always waiting for interesting events (e.g. a network packet or user input on a keyboard) and are activated immediately when required. The system is activated when real-time action is required, e.g. B. for maintenance of the operating system or when a user activates the system.

Modern Standby consists of multiple hardware and software power modes, all of which occur with the screen off. The complexity of Modern Standby comes from keeping the system active to handle background tasks while ensuring the system stays quiet enough to achieve long battery life.

Entering modern standby

Modern Standby starts when the user causes the system to go to sleep (for example, when the user presses the power button, closes the lid, goes into idle mode, or selects Sleep using the power button on the Windows Start menu) . When entering modern standby, apps and system software must be prepared for the transition to low-power operation. (See Preparing software for modern standby.) After software components and apps have been prepared for low-power operation, hardware components, including their software device drivers, must be similarly prepared for low-power operation. (See Prepare the hardware for Modern Standby.) Both software and hardware must be prepared for low-power operation.

Activity during Modern Standby

On-demand transitions to active mode can occur in response to user input, network device interrupts, and other hardware events. Windows switches the SoC from active mode to idle mode after all software activities have ended and the devices on and off the SoC have entered a low-power state. (See Switching between active and inactive states.)

The network and communication devices automatically switch between active mode and sleep mode based on the software activity of the system during Modern Standby. When there are no system services or Microsoft Store app background tasks that require the network, the network device is in low-power mode, log offload, and WoL patterns. When a system service or background task requires network access, Windows automatically places the network device in an active mode.

Occasionally the system stays in active mode (with the screen off) for a long time. These longer active intervals occur for various reasons, e.g. B. to process incoming e-mails or download important Windows updates. Windows components that are allowed to keep the SoC in the active power state are called activators because they are registered with the power manager as being able to block the transition back to idle power mode. The duration of these activities varies widely, but is controlled to conserve battery life. Activity durations can be viewed using the built-in SleepStudy software tool or via Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) based instruments.

On Windows 8.1 Connected Standby systems, during modern standby, Windows switches the SoC from idle mode to active mode at least every 30 seconds to perform kernel maintenance tasks. This maintenance activity is extremely short-lived (typically no longer than a few hundred milliseconds) and cannot be customized. This does not happen on Windows 10 Modern Standby systems.

Resume from modern standby

If the user causes the system to resume from standby, e.g. When you press the power button, the display will turn on immediately and the network devices will return to their normal, active operating mode. The time from pressing the power button to turning on the display is less than a second. After the display has powered up and the network device has returned to normal operating mode, desktop applications will continue and the system will return to its normal active screen-on behavior.
