Emerson Radio Corp. was founded in 1915 as the Emerson Phonograph Co. (NAICS: 421620 Consumer Electronics Wholesaling) based in New York City by Victor Hugo Emerson, an early recording engineer and executive who was once employed by Columbia Records. The first factories opened in Chicago and Boston in 1920. In December of the same year, the company fell victim to the sales slump that affected the entire phonograph industry, caused by the post-World War I recession and the growth of the fast-growing commercial radio industry in the early 1920s. The company quickly went into receivership from what it claims to be the third-biggest US record manufacturer.

In 1922 Emerson Phonograph Co. went into the hands of Benjamin Abrams[1] and Rudolph Kanarak. Abrams, a phonograph and record salesman, ran the company with his two brothers and renamed it Emerson Radio & Phonograph Corp in 1924 after entering the radio business. The company’s record shares were subsequently sold. Although Emerson introduced the first radio-phonograph combination sold in the United States, the company remained relatively unknown until 1932, when it introduced the “Peewee” radio during the Great Depression (see “Historical Products” below).

Emerson Radio & Phonograph switched to military production for World War II in 1942 when it held one-sixth of the US radio market. It became a public company in 1943 when it offered over 40 percent of its stock to the public at $12 a share. In 1947, Emerson offered a television with a 10-inch tube as one of its first post-war products.[3] Although the retail price was nearly the monthly salary of an average working American, Emerson was at the low end of the market. However, between fiscal years 1948 and 1950, high demand for televisions allowed Emerson to more than double its sales. Net income for fiscal 1950 was a record $6.5 million on sales of $74.2 million.

In 1953, Emerson Radio and Phonograph bought Quiet Heet Corp., which entered the company into the air conditioning business. Although radio accounted for only 15 percent of Emerson’s revenues by 1954, [4] the company boasted of having developed the first clock radios, self-powered radios, and pocket radios using transistors. In 1955 the production of tape recorders began.

Emerson Radio and Phonograph paid $6 million to purchase the consumer goods division of DuMont Laboratories in 1958.[5] This acquisition added a higher-priced line of televisions, phonographs, and hi-fi and stereo instruments to Emerson’s products, as well as the DuMont brand. By this time, however, the US television market was saturated, and many customers who needed another set were waiting for color TVs rather than buying a replacement. Sales fell from $87.4 million in fiscal 1955 to $73.9 million in fiscal 1956, when the company made just $84,852.

A cost-cutting campaign by Abrams led to a renewed increase in net income, which reached $2.7 million for fiscal 1959 on sales of $67.4 million. In fiscal 1964 (Emerson’s last full year of independent operations), it earned $2.1 million on sales of $68.2 million.

In 1965, the company acquired Pilot Radio Corp. by Jerrold Corp. Later in 1965, Emerson Radio and Phonograph was purchased for approximately $62 million in cash and stock from National Union Electric Corp., a diversified manufacturer. The line of Quiet Kool air conditioners became a separate division of National Union Electric. This company continued to produce radios, televisions, and phonographs sold under the Emerson and DuMont names, and hi-fi equipment under the Pilot name.[7]

Between 1967 and 1971, the National Union Electric division lost approximately $27 million because volume was too small to cover costs. The division subcontracted the manufacture of televisions and some other home entertainment products to Admiral Corp. and laid off 1,800 employees. In addition to importing some of its home entertainment products from the Far East, Emerson continued to be responsible for design, engineering and marketing.

In late 1972, National Union Electric announced that Emerson would stop selling televisions and other home entertainment products. In 1973, Emerson sold its license to market products under the Emerson name to Major Electronics Corp. Founded in 1948 by Melvin Lane and incorporated in 1956, this Brooklyn-based company originally made phonographs for children.[8] The company later diversified into the manufacture and sale of a wide range of value-priced home entertainment products, including stereos, radios and clock radios. In 1971, Major also began importing low-cost radios. By 1975, the company only made portable phonographs. In 1976 the company moved its headquarters to Secaucus, New Jersey and changed its name to Emerson Radio Corp. in 1977.

Sales increased from $11.5 million in fiscal 1975 to $49.2 million in fiscal 1978, the year in which phonographs, radios, tape recorders and players, compact stereos, digital clock radios, and other low-power electronics were sold imported, assembled, and marketed primarily under the Emerson name. Approximately 60 percent of its components were imported from the Far East and 20 percent each from the UK and domestically, and assembled in either Secaucus or Sun Valley, California.

In 1979, Emerson began selling Heart Aid after buying a large portion of Cardiac Resuscitator Corp., a nearly bankrupt company. Emerson has invested heavily in developing and manufacturing both an improved implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and cardiac pacemaker. In addition, the company took an 18 percent stake in a developer of computer-assisted axial tomography (CAT). Because this product line never made any money, Emerson divested itself of its holdings between 1987 and 1988.

Emerson Radio discontinued its last US-made product, the line of phonographs, in 1980 because rising labor costs made it unprofitable. Despite stiff competition, Emerson Radio increased its sales and profits in fiscal 1980 to $81.9 million and $1.6 million, respectively. Their plan was to have their suppliers (mainly in Taiwan and South Korea) imitate Sony and Panasonic audio/video products and then sell them at a lower price.

Revenue increased from $94.8 million in fiscal 1983 to $181.6 million in fiscal 1984, when net income was $9.1 million due to the company’s 1983 reintroduction of televisions. Emerson bought equipment from Goldstar Electric Co. (AKA LG Electronics), a South Korean company, but sold it at a higher price.

In 1984, Emerson signed a 10-year contract with Orion Electric to produce a line of VCRs for their existing lineup.[10]

In 1985, a compact disc player and microwave oven were introduced, again doubling sales for fiscal 1985 to $357.5 million and increasing net income to $13.3 million. Televisions and VCRs accounted for two-thirds of sales that year.[11] Later that year, Emerson Radio moved its headquarters to North Bergen, New Jersey and acquired H.H. Scott, Inc., a company that manufactured high-fidelity audio and video equipment. Products were sold under the Scott name until 1991, the year the line was discontinued.

In 1986, Emerson began importing and distributing compact refrigerators and hi-fi stereo VHS VCRs. Camcorders, telephones and answering machines were added to its product line in fiscal 1988. In 1990, personal computers and fax machines were added for widespread rollout in more than 500 Wal-Mart stores. In 1992, sales peaked at $891.4 million, but net income was only $10.4 million.

Emerson’s addition of personal computers resulted in a $150 million loss for the company. This, combined with the recession that began in 1990, resulted in the company’s total loss of $37.5 million for the last nine months of the year. Shares fell as low as $2, down from a high of $12.75 in 1987. Several shareholder lawsuits have indicted some Emerson directors and officers for breach of fiduciary duty and self-dealing. Emerson also went into technical default because of its $55.4 million in long-term debt at year-end. In 1988 Emerson Radio was sold to Panasonic.

Fidenas Investment Ltd., a Swiss company based in the Bahamas, began buying shares in Emerson Radio in 1989. It held a 20 percent stake (more than Stephen and William Lane) until 1992 when they attempted a takeover. The Lane brothers attempted to restructure $180 million in debt but conceded defeat in June 1992. Emerson’s financial situation deteriorated, and in fiscal 1993 the company suffered a loss of $56 million on sales of $741.4 million. When the company filed for bankruptcy in October 1993, Emerson had defaulted on $223 million in debt over the previous two years.[14]

In 1994, the company emerged from bankruptcy as a result of a reorganization plan and a $75 million financing arranged by Fidenas, which had taken a 90 percent stake in Emerson. 30 million shares were subsequently issued, some of which were claimed by creditors. Grossman, a private investor, along with Oaktree Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based investment firm that held a smaller stake in Emerson Radio, proposed buying Jurick’s stake in the company for more than $14.6 million . Emerson’s primary focus is the distribution and sale of low to moderately priced products, so its distribution is primarily through mass retailers, discount stores, specialty catalogs and the Internet. As a brand, Emerson is gaining influence around the world through various licensing agreements. For example, Emerson brand TV, DVD, TV/VCR/DVD combos are manufactured by Funai.[23]

Smart set[ edit ]

Emerson Radio pioneered the Smartset clock radio, which automatically sets itself to the correct time and date by using a battery-backed oscillator time base to accurately set the clock’s time when the alarm is on and after a power outage.[ 24] In recent years, the company has expanded the Smartset line to include models with features such as a time projector, infrared touchless snooze control, CD-R/CD-RW and an integrated “Made for iPod” top-mount docking station.

Historical products[ edit ]

In 1915, at the beginning of the company, Emerson’s main product was the Universal Cut Records, which could be played sideways or vertically. The music on offer included a wide range of pop, band, opera, classical, religious and folk music. Also in their early years, Emerson offered one of the last external horn phonographs that sold for just $3.

The “Peewee” radio was introduced in December 1932. About 60 percent of all radios sold between early December 1932 and late May 1933 were Peewees, about 8½ inches long and 6¼ inches wide, half of which were made by Emerson. The Universal Compact line ranged in price from $17.95 to $32.50. Emerson directed the production and sales of this class of radio through 1938, and by then had sold over a million.

In 1947, Emerson offered a television with a 10-inch tube that retailed for $375. It was one of Emerson’s first post-war products. They lowered the price to $269.50 by June 1948, when the newly developed television industry had sold 375,000 sets.

In 1953, Emerson Radio and Phonograph acquired Quiet Heet Corp., which entered the company into the air conditioning business.

Although radio accounted for only 15 percent of Emerson’s sales by 1954, the company claimed to have developed the first clock radio, the first self-powered radio, and the transistor pocket radio.

Tape recorder production began in 1955.

When Emerson purchased Allen B. DuMont Laboratories, Inc. in 1958, a higher-priced line of televisions, phonographs, and hi-fi and stereo instruments, and the DuMont brand were added to Emerson’s products.

In 1979, Emerson began selling Heart Aide after buying a large portion of Cardiac Resuscitator Corp. had bought. The company spent a lot of money developing and manufacturing both an improved implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and pacemaker. In addition, the company took an 18 percent stake in a developer of computer-assisted axial tomography (CAT). Because this product line never made any money, Emerson divested itself of its holdings between 1987 and 1988.

In 1982, Emerson manufactured the Arcadia 2001, the most famous of the second-generation “Emerson Arcadia 2001” 8-bit game console variants. Although the Arcadia 2001 was considerably more powerful than the then-dominant Atari 2600, it wasn’t released until mid-1982, just before the more advanced Atari 5200 and the ColecoVision. It was successful in other countries, however, since Atari had the exclusive rights to many games, the lack of popular game titles made it almost impossible for Emerson to market it in the United States.

In 1983, Emerson began selling rebranded Goldstar televisions at inflated prices for a substantial profit. The CD player and microwave oven were introduced in 1985 and doubled sales. In 1986, Emerson began importing and distributing compact refrigerators. Camcorders, telephones, and answering machines were added to the product line in fiscal 1988. Personal computers and fax machines were added in 1990.

In 1995, Emerson Radio entered the home theater and car audio spaces and the $900 million home and personal security market with a carbon monoxide detector, but exited that space in 1997. Also in 1995, Emerson announced that it would be using its name for more as 250 audio and video accessories from Jasco Products Co., a company that sells cables, remote controls, and appliance cleaning equipment.

Emerson began manufacturing and selling Emerson and G Clef branded television and video products to US retailers in 1999. They also had a licensing agreement with Telesound Electronics for telephones, answering machines, and caller ID products in the United States and Canada.

Program the remote control with the above codes directly following the steps below.

Enter setup mode Press and hold the SETUP button on the remote until the red light on the remote turns on. Release the SETUP button. The red light stays on. NOTE: The red light is either a small light on top of the remote control or the power button.

1. Hold down the (Menu) and (Vol-) buttons on the side of the TV

2. While holding this, press the power button on the side of the TV (NOT the remote control).

3. Blue light comes on and stays on

4. Wait 10 seconds, then release (Menu) and (Vol-).

5. Wait another 30 seconds and an image should appear. If that doesn’t work, unplug the TV for 10 minutes, then press and hold the power button on the TV for 60 seconds, plug it in, and turn it on

Windows 10 Modern Standby (Modern Standby) extends the Windows 8.1 Connected Standby power model. Connected Standby, and consequently Modern Standby, allows for an instant on/off user experience, similar to smartphone power models. Just like the phone, the low-power S0 idle model allows the system to remain connected to the network in power saving mode.

Although Modern Standby provides an instant on/off user experience like Connected Standby, Modern Standby is more comprehensive than Windows 8.1’s Connected Standby power model. Modern Standby enables market segments previously limited to the Traditional Sleep (S3) power model to take advantage of the low-power idle model. Example systems include systems based on rotating media and hybrid media (e.g. SSD + HDD or SSHD) and/or a NIC that does not support all previous Connected Standby requirements.

The number of systems that support Modern Standby instead of S3 is increasing over time. The Modern Standby section describes key changes, partner requirements, and best practices for enabling Modern Standby.

Note Modern Standby is available for both the Windows 10 desktop and Windows 10X. Switching between S3 and Modern Standby cannot be done by changing a setting in the BIOS. Switching the power model is not supported in Windows without a full operating system reinstall.

Functional overview of modern standby

A modern standby session encompasses the entire screen-off to screen-on user scenario. However, individual screen-off and sleep segments make up an entire Modern Standby session. These states distinguish periods of quiesced software behavior from periods of long-term low performance. For this reason, Microsoft considers modern hibernation to be equivalent to traditional S3 hibernation, with the added benefit of being able to run value-added software activities on a regular basis.

In Windows 10, low power consumption is achieved by waking up to the lowest power state only when absolutely necessary and allowing software to only run in short, controlled bursts of activity, dramatically reducing the opportunities for software components to run. Windows and the SoC hardware are always waiting for interesting events (e.g. a network packet or user input on a keyboard) and are activated immediately when required. The system is activated when real-time action is required, e.g. B. for maintenance of the operating system or when a user activates the system.

Modern Standby consists of multiple hardware and software power modes, all of which occur with the screen off. The complexity of Modern Standby comes from keeping the system active to handle background tasks while ensuring the system stays quiet enough to achieve long battery life.

Entering modern standby

Modern Standby starts when the user causes the system to go to sleep (for example, when the user presses the power button, closes the lid, goes into idle mode, or selects Sleep using the power button on the Windows Start menu) . When entering modern standby, apps and system software must be prepared for the transition to low-power operation. (See Preparing software for modern standby.) After software components and apps have been prepared for low-power operation, hardware components, including their software device drivers, must be similarly prepared for low-power operation. (See Prepare the hardware for Modern Standby.) Both software and hardware must be prepared for low-power operation.

Activity during Modern Standby

On-demand transitions to active mode can occur in response to user input, network device interrupts, and other hardware events. Windows switches the SoC from active mode to idle mode after all software activities have ended and the devices on and off the SoC have entered a low-power state. (See Switching between active and inactive states.)

The network and communication devices automatically switch between active mode and sleep mode based on the software activity of the system during Modern Standby. When there are no system services or Microsoft Store app background tasks that require the network, the network device is in low-power mode, log offload, and WoL patterns. When a system service or background task requires network access, Windows automatically places the network device in an active mode.

Occasionally the system stays in active mode (with the screen off) for a long time. These longer active intervals occur for various reasons, e.g. B. to process incoming e-mails or download important Windows updates. Windows components that are allowed to keep the SoC in the active power state are called activators because they are registered with the power manager as being able to block the transition back to idle power mode. The duration of these activities varies widely, but is controlled to conserve battery life. Activity durations can be viewed using the built-in SleepStudy software tool or via Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) based instruments.

On Windows 8.1 Connected Standby systems, during modern standby, Windows switches the SoC from idle mode to active mode at least every 30 seconds to perform kernel maintenance tasks. This maintenance activity is extremely short-lived (typically no longer than a few hundred milliseconds) and cannot be customized. This does not happen on Windows 10 Modern Standby systems.

Resume from modern standby

If the user causes the system to resume from standby, e.g. When you press the power button, the display will turn on immediately and the network devices will return to their normal, active operating mode. The time from pressing the power button to turning on the display is less than a second. After the display has powered up and the network device has returned to normal operating mode, desktop applications will continue and the system will return to its normal active screen-on behavior.

Turn the TV off and on again

NOTES: If the TV is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, disconnect it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the problem is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the TV. Projection TVs and projectors need to cool down before turning back on. You may have to wait a few minutes for them to turn back on. Clean any vents/slits in the TV cabinet

Make sure air can circulate around the TV cabinet. Turn off the TV and disconnect all devices connected to the TV

Turn off the TV and disconnect all connected devices. When all devices are disconnected, turn the TV back on and check if the LED is blinking.

If it doesn’t blink, the problem may be with the connected devices.

If still blinking, go to step 4. Update the TV software to the latest version

If your TV is connected to the internet, press the Home or Menu button on the remote control to enter the settings menus. The Software Update option is usually found under the Product Support or Contact Sony menu.

In addition, you can check our support site to see if a software (firmware) update is available for your TV. If an update is available, steps to install it will be included.

NOTES: On a limited number of connected models, the only option is to enable automatic software updates and allow the TV to update itself. If you only have this option, make sure it is set to On. Older CRT TVs and TVs that cannot connect to the Internet do not have an option to check for a software update or may not be able to update. Other things to check on specific products Some Sony TVs have a media box (tuner) and a separate display. If you have one of these TVs, check that the cable between the media box and the display is securely connected. For projection TVs and projectors, ensure the lamp cover/door is closed and secure.
