The Camp Royale’s sub-$1,000 price point is really insane considering a similarly equipped Brompton M6R is over $1,700. This means a saving of approx. 45%. It is equipped with all the important components such as a luggage rack with wheels, fenders and a hand pump attached to the frame. In addition, it includes additional accessories that are often sold separately when purchasing a Brompton. This includes a front carrier block and an additional seat post with an integrated battery and rear light. You might even get a free tote bag if you order from their website.

Compared to the Brompton M6R, the Camp Royale is only slightly heavier (27.07lbs and 28.88lbs) while the folded dimensions are pretty much the same. Without closely examining a few components, it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between the two bikes. I am very surprised by the design and build quality of this bike. It costs about half the price of the Brompton but also uses a steel frame, all the parts and finishes are very well made. It doesn’t look or feel like a cheap folding bike at all.

What I liked most about Brompton bikes is their compact size and amazing folding mechanism. The folding and unfolding processes are the same on this Camp Royale, but my bike has some issues during the folding process. First, when folding the front wheel back, the hook is not fully attached to the frame; Therefore, it easily detaches and sometimes falls off when I carry the bike. Second, when I drop the handlebars, they are a bit stiff and do not automatically attach to the fork peg. I often have to impress it myself. This is probably a quality control issue as I haven’t heard a similar complaint from other users.

The bike has 6 gears and it performs well enough during my testing. The left shifter is for adjusting the rear derailleur, while the right shifter is for the rear internal hub. Shifting is quick and smooth, so I have no problem climbing some moderate hills, although it’s a lot more strenuous compared to larger bikes. Obviously, the ride isn’t really comfortable since small 16-inch wheels are used. Compared to bikes with 20-inch wheels or fat tires, the Camp Royale is a little rough to ride and you can feel it up your butt even on nice paved roads. It’s a lot bumpier, so you shouldn’t ride this bike off-road. You should also pay more attention to avoiding potholes on the road. These disadvantages are to be expected for a bike of this size and are not a priority when using this bike. I still love it because it’s compact, light weight and can follow me on every trip by bus, subway or my car; I can easily put it in my trunk without taking up too much space. Then when I get home it can be hidden under my desk and no one will notice.

Overall I have no complaints using this bike, especially when it’s only about half the price of a similar Brompton. The differences between them are small, so you can definitely get this Camp Royale if you are on a low budget.

With 16-inch wheels and a chromoly steel frame, the Royale is a sweet ride. I had a lot of fun riding it on the Park Connector Network, and its smaller wheels made it easier to handle, especially in tight corners. The frame is solid and can easily support my weight of 85 kg. The Camp Royale comes with a six-speed gearbox, a two-speed rear derailleur and a Sturmey Archer 3 hub. In contrast to normal bicycles, the six gears do not work sequentially. It takes a while to get used to, and once you get used to it, you’ll find it easy to shift gears. The internal hub only shifts when you stop pedaling, so you need to take that into account when shifting. You can turn the derailleur on and off at any time. I find it a bit difficult to see the gear numbers on the handlebars, but you’ll soon get a feel for the bike’s gears without having to look at them. You should switch the stock grips – they’ll do, but I prefer the Brooks leather grips.
